of the sea, and when we get

into the storm, and they see the power

how very small and relatively
insignificant we human beings are.

Being out to sea is like being in the
wilderness because you're out in the

middle of the ocean, almost
in the middle of nowhere.

You can be around thousands of
people and still feel lonely.

And that's the perfect
opportunity to build your

relationship with the Lord.

This is your air wing
chaplain, Brian Jacobson.

Because we're here for six months or
more, we have a captive audience.

Lord, you know that we have
a mission to carry out,

and we ask your blessing of
safety upon each individual.

Our shipboard life is a real
melting pot of individuals.

So sailors are beginning to
hear about other people's

religious traditions, things they believe
or things they don't understand,

and that leads them
to ask questions.

But like Adam and Eve
are before Christ?

Yes, the beginning.

You know Genesis?

You ever heard of that?

I have heard of it.
T's like the beginning of time.

That's where it says, on the sixth day, God made...

May this body and blood of our Lord

My name is Father Bob Keane.

I'm a catholic priest
of the Jesuit order.

My responsibility is to
supervise and provide all of

the religious ministry that
takes place aboard this ship.

We do have good attendance
aboard services.

Of course, we'd always
like to have more.

My name is Brian Jacobson.

I'm the chaplain for carrier
air wing eleven, and my job

is to provide religious support
to the entire air wing.

The Protestant service that I'm in
charge of is a contemporary praise

and worship service.

Is there any prayer request
tonight?

Uh, my sister-in-law...
Trying to adopt for a really

long time, and praying really
hard about it for a really

long time, and lots of
ups and downs with that.

But she finally got a baby...
It's all permanent.

She's a mother.

So praise God for answered prayers.

In reality, the job of a chaplain is
to protect the first amendment rights

for everybody.

And you start thinking about
all the different religious

faiths that are on board the
"Nimitz," and it's spectacular.

We have three different types of
protestant faiths... I baptize you

in the name of the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Latter Day Saints, Catholic.

There's a small coven
of Wiccans on board.

The council of American witches
finds it necessary to define modern

witchcraft in terms of the
American experience and needs.

We do not want to open
ourselves to the destruction

of our group by those on
self-serving power trips.

Wicca is part of paganism, which is
the belief in many different Gods.

And it'll surprise people.

They're like, I thought all witches
wore black and were always unhappy.

We also believe in the rule
of three, which is, you put

good stuff out there, you'll
get it back threefold.

You put bad stuff out there,
you get it back threefold.

Kind of like karma.

I think I'm one of the only
Jews on the boat, maybe.

I found one more, and that's
only because I was lucky and

he happened to realize that
my name was a Jewish name.

That's why I don't like taking
communion because I don't think I've

been baptized;

I don't know if I have or not.

No, you're not supposed to take
it unless you're catholic, so...

There is, your dad and ask him.

In the berthing areas, in the
workspaces, surprisingly a great deal

of discussion that goes on.

It might not be heavy, overt theological
language, but that's exactly what

they're doing.

we kill somebody"?

looking at him funny?

I guess it was his talk before
we got in the Gulf and stuff.

Trying to give us like,
inspiration, and he was like,

"let's kill whoever we need
to kill.

Remember, you're out
here defending America."

Then I thought about it.

It's like fifty percent of
America that's actually like

don't want us out here.

And I raised my hand and I said, "why
are you so big on killing people?"

And he was like, "well, people
in Iraq, they like, they

killed our men and the marines
that are out there right now,

they're cutting their heads
off, and they're taping it

and acting like everything's
all fun and things.

It's like, if they do anything
to us, I want to get back

at them three times harder."

Then he looked at everybody and he
was like, "are you guys with me?

Let's pray to God that
we kill somebody."

Occasionally, there are some who have
become aware of what seems to be

a conflict of conscience,
and that is something that

they want to talk about, and chaplains
are good people to do that with,

if from only one perspective
in that their conversation

with us is confidential.

I thank God for coming to the
Navy, because if I wouldn't have

come to the Navy, I'd
probably be dead, yeah.

I grew up in boot camp,
'cause before I went,

I was still a child, you
know, acting like a child.

I was out of High School though.

But I was still acting like a
child, gangs a stuff like that.

I was getting threats.

What really got my mom
is, I got jumped.

I got jumped by twenty dudes.

My mom is like, "yo, get
out of the house now.

You're going to a recruiter
right now.

You're signing up for whatever job they
got that's leaving out right now."

♪ Nobody wants to help me help me
paint the wall paint the wall ♪

The first time I saw Willie
Johnson, I said to myself,

"oh my gosh, he is so hot!"

I can't believe
I just said that!

♪ I could be all by myself
though talking to a girl

hanging with the homies but
now, I'm here working hard ♪

Once he, like, sings or whatever,
it just like melts you away.

♪ Getting paint all over my pants
who's gonna pay for my pants?

At first, he said he wanted
to be like, a stripper.

So I thought that was
like, kind of outrageous.

But then, like, after a
while, he was just like,

"well, I want to be a singer."

And I'm like, "OK, well, that's good,
'cause you have a good voice."

And then, like a couple of weeks later,
he was like, "well, you know what?

I want to sing for God."

I think of all those times

that you brought me through I
can never stop praising you ♪

before I came to the
Navy, I wasn't saved.

I knew about things of God.

You know, I went to
church all my life.

♪ God you're ready for
me and my family ♪

but I wasn't trying
to live right.

I was pushing God away.

God, get out of my face.

Man, I want to do my own thing.

sanctuary we lift our hands ♪

God spoke through my
friend, my boy Tate.

He's a choir director, the
one that plays piano.

He says, "all I see
is your spirit.

I don't see no bones, I don't see
no muscles, I don't see nothing."

He said, "all I see is your
spirit, and I see God just

knocking at your door,
asking you to come in.

Knocking."

Close your eyes.

Dear heavenly father, we ask you right
now to forgive us of every wrong

that we've done so far.

God delivered me from the club, he
delivered me from smoking, from porno.

I was hooked on it.

I ain't gonna sit here and
lie in front of all of you.

And whatever you do, don't take
your Holy spirit away from us.

My biggest fear up there

just the fact that I've made
it through part of the day,

and I'll start thinking about, you know,
all right, I've done good so far,

stay up.

You know, not being even
very religious, I'll kind of

pray to myself that, you know,
nothing happens, you know,

with anybody on the flight deck.

her, and she was sleeping,

Once the whole baby's over

and I come home, I'm just
afraid that she'll kind of

go and do her own thing again.

Well, it's probably my fault.

But right before I left,
before I even knew she

was pregnant, we were never
really like always together.

I didn't want it to come to the
point where I fell in love

and then had to leave
for six months.

You know, just because
of how hard it is.

I mean, it's horrible.

And then, you know,
"hey, I'm pregnant."

I care for her a whole lot,
and I want to be with her.

I don't know if I could say
I love her yet though.

Some days, the ship
just sucks you dry.

You feel like you have nothing.

But as long as you have like those two
good friends, it keeps you going.

Me and my friends?

Oh, well, we start it off
by venting.

We always have to have
that vent session.

Kind of get everything out.

My friendship with Dell,
my XO, it's a good one.

Dell and I are very similar.

We do a lot of the same things.

Our kids are the same age.

We both married girls
from High School.

He's great to have around.

He's a lot of fun.

He keeps me out of trouble.

My friends are awesome.
I love my friends.

They're a lot like me, 'cause
most of them are southerners.

There isn't a better guy
in the Navy right here.

I have come to have more friends here
in the Navy than I had back home

because some of the stuff that
you're involved with back

home... everybody don't live a
perfect life, and I realize

that most of the friends
I have back home wasn't

really true friends at all.

I feel like I've known
Susan my whole life.

And the thing is, I've
never met Susan before.

She's been a true friend, and I...
I do have to say,

as far as the emotional side, Sue has
seen it, and I've also seen hers.

Tate, you know, that's
my brother in the Lord;

you know what I'm saying?

So that's my brother...
I tell him everything.

And my brother, he loves
me no matter what.

You know what I'm saying?

Even if I told God, "God, I don't
want to talk to you no more."

I mean, if I were to do my own thing,
he would still be there for me.

But that's a brother.

That's a real brother for you.

Primary rule of foc'sle etiquette
is, you never step over

the anchor chain.

Please try to remember that.

That's a safety issue.

The foc'sle is an area in the ship
where the anchor chains come up out of

their lockers, and we get to
make it our chapel on Sundays.

But it is right underneath
the flight deck, and right

underneath catapult one
and two.

We come to walk in the light of one
faith, in one communion of love.

So my sermon is frequently
peppered by an F-18, or

a Prowler being shot
down the catapult.

faith background.

You want them all, but

Roman church, priests are celibate.

They're not married.

On the other hand, like many
people, you may wish to marry

and have a family.

that you might want, but they're

mutually exclusive.

Would that appeal to you?

from the life I expect to have.

I mean, I figure that the jewels I
have are meant to be used, you know?

Not just to sit idle, you know?

I mean, my parts all work
and they're good to go.

I mean, you know what I mean?

But I mean, besides the
unusual discharges I have,

and the rashes all over.

And I, he just bitched me out.

About two weeks later, I
saw him on the flight deck

and he was talking to a friend
like, whispering, like,

"hey, you see that guy

He tried to dump a bag of
plastics on me the other day."

I walked, I said,
"you know what?"

And I started, you know, we
got into it a little bit,

and then we started laughing
about it, and we just kind of

became good friends after that.

'Cause we have, let's
say, a five-inch crack.

So a wedge might fit all
the way through it.

We're a lot alike
in a lot of ways.

He's almost the complete
opposite of me kind of.

Well, not complete opposite.

We both have like, problems
paying attention to things.

We're both very
sarcastic about things.

We're always making smart

Being around secular people,
like, they're good people too.

They made me open my eyes and say,
"oh look, they're just like me."

of this raunchy, uh, sex scene,
and it just interrupted

for evening prayer.

And you know, it comes on, "good
evening, my Nimitz family!

And we're thinking, "what the...?"

God, it is often hard to get
adequate rest when the days

at sea are long and laborious.

I call upon you to grant those not...
I think evening prayer...

I don't think that's right.

I don't think they should do it.

I don't think it's right for the
people who are not religious.

It don't really bother me
that much.

It bothers me more in the sense
that it bothers other people.

One of my atheist friends who, every
time the prayer goes on, he gets

really mad and he says
something about it.

He's like, "why are they
forcing this upon me?"

Guard and guide all those who fly
through the great spaces in the sky.

I think it's an important
part of the evening.

I mean, even for a guy
that's not religious.

If you actually stop and just
stop for a couple of minutes

and listen to him, he's always
a real soothing voice, and he

just kind of calms you down.

Comfort them with
your loving presence.

Heal their bodies and
encourage their spirits.

I wouldn't say that I'm a
religious person, per Se.

I am not that religious.

No, I'm not religious.

Lord, it is nights like tonight that
we remember our families at home.

Sometimes, they send their
prayers out to like the

reactor department, and I'm
like, what, why would you send

a prayer out to just one
department?

It doesn't bother me...
Not in the least.

It just seems sometimes that, yeah,
this boat is mainly Christian.

Upon our flight ops this night.

Lord, you know that we have a mission
to carry out... do I think of

ourselves as Christian soldiers?

I, yeah, we are, in a way.

Do I think we're imposing
Christianity into the Middle

East, or anything like that?

Uh, no, I don't.

I think we're imposing our culture
more, which incorporates Christianity

but incorporates McDonald's
a little bit more.

We have been asked for
Islamic services.

We have some people, but we're
trying to get a lay leader,

an individual lay leader as an
individual to step forth and lead it.

The issue is that in many
religious traditions,

they're not accustomed to lay
persons leading worship.

Well, it's the chaplain's job to
make sure that I conduct the service

in the way of a lay leader.

I have to make sure that I
distinguish the difference

between teaching and preaching.

And the Bible switches very swiftly,
and it goes down in verse 25

to a whole different scenario and it's...
I'm a-b-h-a-m brown.

I'm appointed lay leader.

I represent my church body,
the Pentecostal service on

board the ship every Sunday
at 1500.

Then the Bible said that there was
a woman that had an issue of blood

for twelve years.

And the thing with the book of
Leviticus 15:25, and it says

that if a woman had an issue
of blood, she was clean and

she was supposed to be away from people,
according to the Levitical law.

So the thing she realized is that she
knew the law, and she said, "I can't

touch him physically
because I'm unclean.

But if I could just touch the hem of
his garment, I could pull virtue."

God is saying, "I want people
that's going to press for me."

She said, "if I could just
touch the hem of his garment."

How many people that believe
that mentality... if I could

just touch the hem of his
garment, I will be made whole?

God is looking for garment
touchers, because when you

press after God, you begin to
search for something from God.

The Bible says he turned around,
and he said, "who touched me?"

And then the disciples were like,
"Jesus, what's wrong with you?

You got so many people
around you," huh?

"People are thronged
around you," huh!

"People are touching
you all over," huh!

"But you're talking about
one particular touch," huh!

So when you begin to seek God, huh,
you begin to realize what worship is.

You got the power to excel.

You got the power to leap.

You got the power to fight.

But God say your action, your action
speaks louder than your words.

I surrender it all ♪

A lot of people become depressed at
times because six months of their life

is away from their family.

It's like they're missing a
part of life for six months.

That's why we come and we
praise God in this way that we

do, because it's a way to
give us hope and help give us

strength for what is to come.
