Shepard sisters are special.

All junior Olympians who found
almost instant success when

a babysitter signed them
up for a track meet on a whim.

They never ran before.

They had no idea
they were athletes?

No, not at all.

I knew they liked to jump around and
act crazy like kids, but that's all that...

it was room two-two.

Please welcome Coach Jean Val Tanya
Handy and her three junior Olympians.

What's the toughest part about
living at the homeless shelter for you?

Um, well, I have no privacy and I'm not
allowed to have any of my friends over.

Good morning, Ray.

Last September, they
lost their apartment when

mom just couldn't
keep up with rising rent.

But for her girls, athletic
scholarships may be their way out.

So, Sports Illustrated contacted you girls
to tell you that all three of you have

been named Sports
Illustrated Kids of the Year.

We are truly honored.

What do you guys want
to be when you grow up?

I actually want to be a
math teacher or a judge.

I want to be a
lawyer and a judge.

They have hopes.

Ladies and gentlemen, Ty,
Wayne and Brooke Shepherd.

Yes, I learned that you just
can't judge a book by its cover.

There's a lot of women
and children in there

who's working hard
to get out of the shelter.

And they, you know,
just regular folks.

Like you and I.

It's just that we just had so
much help from so many people.

years, which, you know, that's my fault.

They had nothing
to do with that.

But they handled
it like champions.

And find a cure for cancer.

I want to do something
to change the world.

My sisters are
very, very annoying.

As sisters should be, I guess.

But they also help me.

They tell me when I'm wrong.

And they're just awesome.

In the shelter, I
thought it was all over.

I thought we were just going to
be homeless for the rest of our lives.

I guess that was in the beginning
when we first moved there.

Because I think that shelter was
the worst shelter we've been in.

We've only been in two.

We've been in a motel
with only two beds.

Literally the size
of this living room.

It felt like it, yeah.

And I thought, it's over.

We're going to stay homeless
for the rest of our lives.

In school, I started failing.

Not failing, but I
started blacking.

It was harder to learn.

It was harder to
talk to my friends.

I would just think about what might
happen if the rest of my life is like this.

What did you do?

What did your mom tell you?

She told us not
to give up on her.

In the future, I want my
mom to have her dream job.

And I hope Rain
breaks five track records.

I hope Ty will be like the
next Beyonce, you know?

I want to be an artist.

And a check on her.

The Shepherds
are a special case.

Seven months after they started
with me, they lost their apartment.

And I was shocked.

And I knew that I had to try
to help and I didn't know how.

But I've been learning
a lot since then.

I grew up in the projects.

And I always said to myself, I'm not
always going to live in the projects.

I'm not.

For me, I always felt like I can
do whatever I put my mind to.

I can do whatever I want.

These girls have to have that same feeling
that they can do whatever they want to do.

But they have to understand
that education is the key.

And that's the only way
they're going to make it.

Okay, jog off two laps.

And then report for donuts.

This is the hardest working
team on the East Coast.

I'm telling you right now.

You are not going to find a
harder working team than this team.

Some of you, your
daughters may not make it.

Because this is like you getting out
of high school and applying to Harvard.

And you're not going to make it.

And not getting in.

But maybe you could
go to Penn State.

It's still a good school.

Parents are responsible
for submitting a copy

of their daughter's report
cards to the coaches.

And staying on
top of their grades.

Because the object of the team is
to get them an athletic scholarship.

So that they can
go off to college.

And you don't have
to put out money.

That is the goal.

If you want your daughter to go to the
Olympics, then you're in the wrong place.

Recently, we have come into some
grants that have been awarded to us.

And some gifts.

Because we had three
super athletes on the team.

Who were named Sports
Illustrated Kids of the Year.

I've been almost
four years on this job.

I'm now getting minimum wage.

I'm looking at the
interviews I'm going on.

And the pay.

And if I had one of these jobs.

It wouldn't be this bad.

I'm getting paid.

Literally now, minimum wage.

Now that minimum wage is $10.50.

That's what I'm getting
where I'm working.

You know, I've been
on a couple of interviews.

In the last couple of months.

Last few months, I should say.

And I haven't
gotten a better job.

I don't want to be too nervous.

About the interview.

I really don't.

I want to be more relaxed.

You know?

Right now with Mr. Perry.

Paying the rent.

It's just basically I'm
putting it in savings.

And so when it's done.

I'll have to pay my own rent.

So a lot of things will be.

I guess cut in half.

In order for me to save the way.

I would like to.

I would have to
get a better job.

Maybe go back to school.

I'll just save what I can.

But after a while I realized.

That when girls got older.

That there was more going on.

What's at stake
is their whole life.

And where they go with it.

Stay away from drugs.

Stay away from teen pregnancy.

And it's an everyday struggle.

The most important thing.

I give the girls.

Is a sense of empowerment.

They get that by.

Being part of something bigger.

Than themselves.

And setting goals.

And reaching those goals.

And not taking no for an answer.

And that would take them far.

When they first
came on the team.

They were a hot mess.

They didn't know anything.

And it's good that.

We got a chance to come here.

Just to broaden their horizons.

So they can see.

That there's a whole
world out there.

And they can be part of it.

athletes in the country.

I think, it's going

If you're an athlete,
it's easier to use,

easier to get rid of,

to happen, I'm feeling good.

Three times I've been in a
relationship and lost myself in it.

The reason I will not
do it with these girls

is because I know I
will lose myself in it.

started the Colgate Women's Games.

It was his idea, really, to put women
in the forefront of track and field.

He was a pioneer
in that respect.

He wanted women to
get the opportunity to go to

college, and through
track and field, he did that.

For me, he was a mentor.

Before I met him, I didn't
know any black people

who were attorneys who
had gone to law school.

So I got that in my head
that that's what I wanted to do.

I've been a coach for 33 years.

But as a career, I'm an
administrative law judge.

I don't get paid for coaching.

My mother told us that we should get an
education, we should become something.

Not exactly knowing
how, but at that time,

the city universities
in New York were free.

So I chose to go to law school.

And even my father
discouraged me because those

were opportunities that
were never open to him.

But I just kept going
with what I wanted to do.

And eventually, he
was so proud of me.

So that's what I want for the
girls also, those opportunities.

talented girls to the street.

And it's always sad for
me, but I finally had to say to

am able to help is a victory.
