team of India in blind cricket.

This is the story of Indian
Women's Cricket Team for the Blind.

From birth, I was partially blind.
But when I reached the 10th standard,

My eyesight worsened.

Now, I can't see.

That life was different.
This life is very different.

So, it is quite difficult.

But what to do?
We have to adjust with our circumstances.

When I was a kid,
I was able to see partially.

Once, a grain carrying vehicle
had come to our village.

We were four friends
and amongst the four of us

my younger sister was also there.

The grain was already
off loaded

and we jumped on the vehicle
and it started moving.

While the others jumped off
without any issue... When I jumped,

my head hit some place,
I was immediately blinded

and I could hardly see anything.

I am blind by birth.
I even got

an operation done on my eye,

but I didn't gain any vision.
It's very less.

I can see up to 6 to 10 metres.

When I was eight years old,

a woman hit my eye

with a bamboo stick.
Hence, I lost my vision.

We were playing in the field.

My brother is a good archer.

So, he asked me if I wanted to see
how good his skills were.

I agreed.

So, when he shot the arrow,
I looked up to see where it was going.

It hit me in the eye directly.

There is not much difference
between the normal cricket

and the blind cricket.

The difference arises
due to some techniques

sound plays an important role,

B1 players are completely blind.

B2 players can see up to two metres.

B3 players can see up to six metres.

B1, the fully-blind batsman
is accompanied by a runner.

Every run made by a B1 batsman
is considered to be double.

In the playing 11, it's mandatory
to have at least 4 B1 players.

The B2 batsman has
the option to get a runner.

In the playing 11,
there can't be more than 4 B3 players.

This is the combination of the team.

The ball has to be pitched before it.

If it is pitched after the line,
it will be a no-ball.

When our B1 batsman is batting,

As the B1 players are totally blind,

they can only hear the sound
of the ball when it is on the ground.

They sweep the ball.

blind cricket in India

was a bigger challenge than playing it.

And it was made possible
because of only one organisation.

Its name is 'Samarthanam'.

What I believe is,

whoever is denied of opportunities,
they are disabled.

This is Dr. Mahantesh G Kivadasannavar,

the founder of Samarthanam Trust
for the Disabled

and also the Cricket Association
for the Blind in India.

When I was a baby of six months old,

typhoid with virulent temperature

took away substantial sight
from me.

As I started growing up, I still
remember, when I started to play cricket,

it was a very sequential game.
Unlike other games, it's not too fast.

For a visually impaired person like me,
it's easy to follow.

So, I felt, probably this was the game
I should start liking and loving.

It was easy to play and it builds
a lot of camaraderie.

So, in that way, cricket has been an
integral part of my life from childhood.

So, 'Samarthanam' works hard
towards creating opportunities

for the visually impaired

and other disabled and
socio-economically challenged people.

But the reason to start 'Samarthanam'
had two major objectives.

Number one is cricket for the blind.

And number two is supporting higher
education for the visually impaired.

CABI, a registered entity,
was established in 2010-11

primarily to support and govern
the game of cricket for the blind.

Since 2011, after we took over

the entire management of
blind cricket in our country,

India is the only country which
has won all the formats of the game.

Though we always wanted
to help our blind girls,

but we wanted to stabilise the
game for the visually impaired men first.

Then we could focus on the blind girls.

It took almost 9-10 years.

Have you watched the movie ‘1983’,
of Kapil Dev(former Indian Cricketer)?

-Yes. Yes.
-This is the resemblance

of the World Cup they won.

We received the invitation from ECB,
the England Cricket Board

that the International Blind
Sports Association would be hosting

the World Blind Games in Birmingham

and would like to have both men and women

participate from our country.

Our intention to create
a national team became a reality.

Our first Indian Blind
Women's National Team

was created in April 2023
and we decided to send them to Nepal

because Nepal was known
for the Blind Women's cricket.

Nepal is a strong team and we felt

that CABI needs to provide
an opportunity for the girls

to prepare themselves. Most of the girls
come from various parts of India.

So, it is very important to come together
as a team and work and play in a team.

Because it's a team sports
at the end of the day.

Push this hand back with force.
Move it back forcibly.

We have to work a lot.

We have to focus on the
ball and go to this position.

When we teach them, they touch my leg

to find out which leg is in
the front and which one is in the back.

I stay in that position
until they understand it.

When I got the information about the
formation of a Women's Blind Cricket team,

I wished to be a part of the team.

I wanted to enter the field of cricket
when the team was formed.

My friend told me that cricket was
an option and girls could play cricket.

There is an NGO called Samarthanam.

They are conducting a camp for us.

So, she told me to go there
and try playing once.

All my childhood, I used to hear
about cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar,

Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh.
It made me interested in playing cricket.

Once we were working in the fields
and I asked my father if I could play too.

He responded... 'Why not? You can play.'

He said, ‘What do you lack
that you can’t play”?

He only motivated me.

My dream was to play for India.

I didn't play.

But by coaching the Blind Indian
Women's Team, my dream was realised.

So, I am very happy.

The tour to Nepal was organised.
The first day, we got this jersey.

Actually, I have seen
the Indian Jersey only on TV

and the other players
wearing it and playing.

As a kid, I never imagined that
I would be able to wear it and play.

Many people don't get this chance.
It's very rare.

Only a few people get this chance.

So, I got it. I am going
to represent India. I am so happy.

I mean I like Dhoni
and Harmanpreet Kaur.

So, I wanted their jersey.
However, in our category

the B1 players get a single digit,
the B2 players get double digits

and the B3 players get triple digits.

So, I asked for '7'. It was booked.
So, I asked for '77'. It was also booked.

I asked my coach for '777'.
He said it was also booked.

I have a brother. I told him
that the digits were booked.

He told me it was
okay and to take '007'.

-What is the colour of the jersey?
-It's dark blue.

My coach told me about it.

Getting the jersey of the National Team

is a moment when the sport
becomes the player's identity.

And gives courage to make victory
a reality and the strength to fight

against the difficulties.

To receive this jersey, these players
have not only faced their blindness

but they have faced some
problems that we can't even fathom.

To bring a blind girl to

the ground was our biggest task.

It was the first challenge.

It's because their parents
don't send them out.

We fear sending such kids out.

Because when we used to see her here,

she would stumble on
a small stone on the road.

Now, to send her out...

We have to send her with someone.
How will they treat her?

So, when we used to think about it,
even Priya would say

that everyone was there.
There were more kids like her.

When I called Jhili, she said,
she wouldn't be able to go to play

I asked her the reason.

She said that she had
her grandmother at home.

Who would feed her?
Who would take care of her?

I asked her if there
was no one else at her house.

She said she had a brother,
but he goes to work.

I asked her how much he earned per day.

She said he earned
250 to 300 rupees per day.

When I started playing,

I didn't have a mobile phone.

and we became champions,

My family came to know
about it from the newspaper.

When I came here during my holidays,
I told my family.

First, they were against it.

But now, they support me.

As a manager, I have to make sure
that their girls are safe.

First is this. When they feel
that their girls are safe,

they will send them for the camps
or the matches.

I work as a dishwasher in people's
houses because I am uneducated.

But because I got sick,
I couldn't do it anymore.

Then I got a job as a cook in the bank.

I earn 3,000 rupees by doing this.
I run my family with that.

I want to take care of
my mother when she grows older.

She has been working since she was young.

She never got to rest at home.

So, I want to fulfil all her needs.

three are blind.

My older sister,
my younger brother and I can't see.

The two younger sisters can see.

My father is the only
one who works in the family.

So, it becomes difficult
to take care of our family's needs.

So, whenever I get any prize
money or match fee for playing cricket

I make sure to give it
to my family to support them.

That makes me feel really happy.

My family consists of my parents,

my brother and my sister.

My father is a daily wage labourer.

Since he is unwell, he is
not able to work anymore.

So, we have difficulty
in running the house.

because only if I go to bank, then I will get some money.
Otherwise I won't be able to get.

Because father's requirement is
there if he needs to withdraw money

then his signature is required and
my signature is required as well.

as it’s a joint account and to travel
that distance also my father gets very tired.

Whenever the match fee comes,
we manage the household in that.

There are five members in my family.

My mother, my father,
a sister, a brother and myself.

My father is a fisherman.

Our whole family survives
on the money he earns by fishing.

Some days,
we get a decent amount of money.

But other days,
we don't even catch fish for us to eat.

So, they found it difficult
to spend money on sports for me.

And I didn't want to be a burden on them.

I mean, I realised that
I had to take care of my future.

So, I decided to work hard
and make a future for myself.

People coming from such challenging
backgrounds will always have

that fire in the belly.
They want to do something.

They would have faced tough situations.

It so happened that we never

had a criteria to pick the girls
from any specific background.

But it so happened that the majority of the girls
come from very very difficult backgrounds

We have never seen kids from
rich families coming into cricket.

It's very rare. It's very rare to be seen.

When it comes to the sports,
most of the family members will think,

'Already, our child has one disability'.

'If they go into any sports,
they may get injured.'

'They may get another disability.

Then who will take care of them?'

We are doing the 1600-metre run test

to check their aerobic endurance.

For every athlete,
you need to know where their baseline is.

How much can they use their energy?

This will give us a base on
how much they can push themselves.

Initially, they were not understanding
what we were trying to speak

and why all this was happening.

For them, everything is cricket.

So, you put them into the field,
their energy levels are 10 on 10.

But when you ask them
to do some kind of exercise,

their energy levels suddenly drop.

There are certain injuries that do
arise from the sudden training

that they are doing right now.

Even if I am injured,
I forget about it and play well.

I don't show it on the ground.

Over the course of time, three
or four of them had a lot of injuries.

Now, the pain has reduced.

And that's something
they see as an improvement.

And now, they come back and say,
'I do see an improvement.'

'What can I do by myself?'
Or something like that.

I will be fit for the England Series.

At the current camp,

they have befriended each other.

So, as I am seeing in the camp, they
are coming into a comfort zone slowly.

I am very happy.

I am able to interact with
the people of many languages.

I am able to learn about their cultures.

All of us have become friends.

When we go back home, we miss
all the good times and our friends.

When we talk to each other,
we use the language we know.

If we are unable to understand,

another person translates it and
tells us what the other girl is saying.

That's a good thing
that we have been observing.

These girls are meeting and talking
with each other. They are having fun.

Cricket is a life changer.

The way cricket for the blind has impacted
our visually impaired girls is huge.

Now, I am playing cricket.

So, I toured Nepal,
England and even Mumbai.

Had I not been playing,
I would have been stuck

between Baleshwar and Bhubaneswar.

I would be studying in Bhubaneswar
and be confined to my home.

Because I am playing cricket,
I am able to travel and meet everyone.

Cricket taught me to strive
for achievements in life.

And... In my hometown...
I couldn't do anything.

So... The game has given me a name.

My name was published in newspapers.

So, my family was very happy.

When Priya goes out of the country
to play international matches...

For example, she went
to England. Since then,

We are being recognised because of Priya.

They say Priya's village is Nimsadiya.

I sent Simu to study.

I never imagined that she would
prosper so much and play for India.

I am extremely proud and happy.

No one from our village or district

has ever played cricket on this level.

I am proud that my daughter,
Ravanni, went

to a foreign country to play cricket.

my daughter has made the country proud.

specifically is

that every disabled person should become
a contributing member of this society.

They should become a taxpayer

so that he or she can lead a life

We have well-educated people,
but they are not getting opportunities.

The only reason is disability.

They are our equals.
They are citizens of India.

So, we don't have any rights
to discriminate.

The way people view normal cricket,
