My name is Harrison Okene.

I'm the chief cook
on board Jascon-4.

And I was there for
62 hours on the wreck

when it was down
there on the seabed.

(Dramatic music)

(Music continues...)

That morning,
what we were about to say,

that is when my wife
called me and she was

saying that she had a
dream that she didn't like.

I feel that one doesn't count,
not exactly.

So we said, wait,
soon, the option.

(Stormy ocean)

So that fateful day,
May 26th, 2013, when I

woke up from my bed
and I went up to the galley.

Because my profession
there was a cook and there

are guys that is going
to bed in the morning.

So you have to get
their breakfast ready for them.

So every four o'clock
I have to be awake.

So I went up to the
galley and turned on the

burners because it
takes time to get hot.

So I went to the bathroom,
sweating and pissed.

So I was in the toilet when,

suddenly I saw the
vessel twist to one side.

The next thing I
saw was upside down.

(Wave breaks on ship)

It was so fast,

before I could even hold
the handle of the door.

(Boat overturns in storm)

(Objects fall within ship)

(Underwater sounds/waves)

I heard when the mast of the
vessel stopped on the ground.

(Underwater sounds continue...)

That was when I
realized that we were all in

the sea bed and the
vessel was completely sunk.

(Underwater sounds continue...)

(Creaking ship)

When I turned upside down,
the whole power went off

and everywhere became dark,
blackout.

At that moment in time, there
was no water inside the vessel.

It really just went upside down.

There was no water.

It was when I moved to the
watertight door, the alleyway,

when I saw the guys
trying to open the door.

(Men shouting in distress)

(Ship creaking)

When it's six o'clock,
seven in the evening,

we locked every door
because of pirates.

So that is why the
door was locked.

The next thing I saw
was water coming from

down and shook us up.

(Water rushing in)

I just think inside of
me if I stay in the same

place with these guys
trying to open this door,

I'm going to drown.
Let me just swim inside.

(Thunder and wind)

The water was just like full
force coming from down.

On my own, I was also trying

because the space is not
wide enough for you to swim.

So you just have to go
through all the structures

and push yourself.

I never even knew where
I'm heading to but I know

I'm just going
inside the vessel.

(Fast-moving water)

(Glass breaking)

The force of the water
that came from down

pushed me into the
second engineer's cabin.

When I was inside, I was still
thinking, "I'm going to die."

(Underwater sounds)

We were out there
working on a pipeline.

We were a dive team,
saturation and air divers.

I was there as the offshore
manager at that time.

On the morning
of the 26th of May,

we were called out
to a meeting and the

client representative asked
us if we could assist them.

One of their tank boats
had sunk overnight

with all hands on deck.

And they wanted to
know if there was any

possibility that we could
go and recover bodies.

They did ask us if anyone
is not willing to do this.

We were contracted to
do a construction job,

not a body recovery job.

So it was quite a
daunting prospect

to get ready for.

We spoke to everybody, because
we knew what possibly faced us.

That we would be
recovering dead bodies.

And gave everybody
the opportunity to,

not dive if they didn't want to.

All said that they would dive.

Nobody had any
reservations about it at all.

You're in a chamber with
nine other big, brawly divers.

If everyone says yes, then
you're going to say yes as well.

I'm not going to be the
only one that said no.

So there was a
bit of peer pressure but,

at the end of the day,

if you were one of the
people in that vessel that sank,

then you would
want your family to

be able to bury you
and find your body.

Even if you don't want to do it,

it's something that
you need to do.

I would want someone
else to do that for me.

Unfortunately,
I've recovered a body before.

And I was able to tell them
what it was going to be like

and what to expect.

It's different if you know

that you're definitely going
to go find a dead body.

I didn't sleep the night before.

It was quite stressful.

It's about 22 hours transit
from where we were to the wreck.

(Deep rumbling sounds)

Everywhere was dark,

the only thing I could
see was the life vests'

solar light that was on.

When I saw the life vests,

I was a bit calmer
because I feel this light.

I can see underwater.

The next thing I
thought inside of me was,

let me try and see
if I can help myself,

or get out of the boat
and go out from the vessel.

So I decided to swim back
to that same watertight door.

So I have to
check the same cabins.

In the last cabins,
I saw a bag in there.

So I saw some coveralls inside.

So I tore the coveralls.

I made a rope from it.

So I tied the rope.

So if I'm going to the deck,

trying to go out from
the other side of the deck,

if I'm short of breath,
if I'm missing my way,

the rope, I can get
back to where I'm from.

So I have to submerge
myself to the door.

(Eerie sounds)

I felt something
floating on the top.

So I was still going under.,

until I was trying
to grab the thing

and see if I can use
it to sustain myself.

When I grab,
I discover it's a human.

So I just pulled back.

It made me feel bad when I
saw my colleagues pass away

because I'm like a mother
to them on board a vessel.

I do the cooking,
we lived like a family.

They come to me
one after the other.

They tell me their stories,

challenges in marriage,
challenges in life.

So when I see guys
with families, children,

in big big dreams, so many
drains just pass away.

I lost every hope because
being in the water, dying,

is the worst death zone
we can encounter in life.

I keep trying like that,

going to the door
like that several times.

I couldn't breathe.

It becomes dark.

So I get confused
and the place is cold.

And I was tired.

And I thought of
it after some time

that I don't think
I could continue.

I knew very well that I'm tired.

If I proceed more, I may
lose my life in the process.

So that's when I came back.

(Tender music)

Even with the solar lights,
you cannot see much.

It's a small light,
you cannot see much.

And after that,
when it goes off...

the whole place
will black out again.

It becomes dark.

(Creaking)

(Man yelling)

I keep hearing the same shouts
from the crew, my colleagues.

They were shouting,
shouting, shouting, shouting.

After some time,
one voice would go off.

You wouldn't hear
the person anymore.

Until there was one that
stayed for a very long time.

The trainee cadet,

crying for help, crying
for help, crying for help.

Then after some time,
I didn't hear his voice anymore.

That was the last voice
I heard when I was there.

(Sound of waves)

This was some 70 miles
away from where we were.

It took us till the
following afternoon.

When we got there,
we set up,

so that we could get a
good look at the wreck.

We didn't know what
we were going to be faced

with when we got there.

All that we had was the
drawings of the vessel,

which we'd already
shared with the

divers so they were aware of,
what the configuration was.

The fact that it
was upside down,

which meant sometimes
holding the drawings

upside down and looking
at them upside down,

to guide them where
they were going.

Our aim was
to cover every cabin,

and to cross off the
cabins as we went,

so that we didn't miss anybody.

We weren't going to
find anybody alive.

This would now just be
a case of recovering bodies.

(Bubbling sounds)

(Ominous ship sounds)

(Man banging on door)

If I'm standing,
the water will be covering me.

So I saw the
wardrobes in the cabin.

So I have to pull the wardrobes
and put them in the water.

(Smashing wood)

I took some part of the wardrobe

so that I could be able to
sustain myself from water.

The boat has a
fiber in the wall,

and I have to pull them.

So I pull them, and then I
took some part of the wardrobe,

board, and put on it,
so I sat on it.

So I only have my legs to
my stomach in the water,

so I was just able
to breathe for a while.

(Bubbling water sounds)

Actually, I was not thinking
of food when I was there,

because my mind was just
how to go out from that place.

I was not thinking of food.

But when I was trying to
get the covers to make a

rope, I saw one coke,
one Schweppes, and sardines.

So I opened the coke.

I opened some dates.

So I was pinching some dates

a little on my mouth, and
I poured the coke a little,

because my whole
tongue has peeled.

So I'm just trying
to get the coke in

so I can have
something in my tummy.

So that's what I was doing,
just the coke and some dates.

(Underwater sounds)

I still remember
sitting in the bell

going through the notes
and looking at all the

blueprints of the vessel
and thinking about

what's ahead of us.

So the wreck was sitting
on the seabed at 34

metres, and it was
completely tipped over.

An upturned wreck is a really,
really dangerous place to be.

Right, you can see
the wreck, yeah?

How far away do you think it is?

Ten metres.

Come up onto the
top of the bell and

get across to the vessel.

We were observing the
divers through the divers' hat

cameras on the monitors

to guide them where
they were going.

One-Five-Zero, are you looking

through the window
of your compass, yeah?

And we were talking
to the divers on the

comms box using the mic.

How far away do
you think it is now?

(Muffled dialogue)

Five metres.

Oh, yeah,
I can see the wreck now.

OK, which is the most high side,
the vessel's at an angle, yeah?

So the wreck was sitting
on the seabed, and it was

buried at the stern in the mud,

and it was
completely tipped over.

The stern was upwards,
the deck was downwards.

And it's...because you see,
we want access.

You remember the
drawing I did for you.

We want to come in
under the side there, yeah?

First thing we had to
do was get the door open,

so that we could
get inside the wreck.

I want you to go underneath now.

Going down.

That's the railing, OK?

Side of the vessel,
there's a window, yeah?

alright, look to
your left and right.

There should be some stairs
if you swim along there.

OK, you need to go a
little bit further down.

Let me look around.

OK, what have we got there?

There's the stairs, OK?

alright, that's upside down.

There's the door, OK.

See if the door can open up now.

No, locked.

First of all, we had to get
into the vessel because

being in Nigerian waters,

most of the doors on
these vessels are kept

locked because of the
problems with piracy.

So to fast open the doors,

we had to basically break
open the doors from the outside,

which wasn't a very
easy thing to do.

OK, so now I want you to
go back to the bar, to the bell,

and I want you to go
and get all the tools.

OK, Darryl, we're going
to need the crowbar,

the chisel and a hammer.

Anything to open a door, OK?

Good, OK,
so you are 100% certain

that is the door
to the wheelhouse.

OK, excellent.

You see, that's
obviously the lock there.

You see the round, circular one?

Let's get the wedge and
let's get it inside, break it.

What do you want, sir?

Do you want a bigger hammer?

(Unclear dialogue)

Bigger hammer.

OK, have you got
a big sledge hammer

on the deck,
ready to go down?

The company was kind enough

to give us these massive
steel wedges and massive,

looked like Thor's hammer.

Right, just get in there.

Let's bang this thing open.

We're going to use
the hammer, yeah.

OK, go, go, go.

Let's get that door open.

So they spent a long

period of time breaking
into the door on the bridge.

What kind of door
did you say it was?

Was it aluminium?

What kind of door is it?

I think it's steel.
Steel?

Yeah.

OK, keep going.

The door on the
vessel is a steel door

and it's got full potential
locking points plus

an additional
key lock on it as well.

It's the strongest sort of
fastener that you can get.

Let me know when
it's ready to go.

And we managed to get
the wedge inside and then

basically systematically
peeled the door open.

You're getting it, are you?

It's open, is it?

Oh, sure it is.

Diver's voices sound like
Mickey Mouse because

they're breathing a mixture of

oxygen and helium,

and it's the helium which
gives the higher-pitch voice.

It's open, it's tied back.

It's broke off?

The door is broken off?

OK, so there's no more door?

Understood.
OK, leave it inside the bridge.

Let me know when you go on it.

We knew that we had
to get into the wreck.

Outside the wreck,
the visibility wasn't too bad.

But of course, as soon as you
got into the wreck, it's black.

The wreck's upside down.

This was a wreck
that's just sunk.

It's got all its
fixtures and fittings

and everything else
that have been torn apart.

The visibility wasn't good.

There's debris everywhere,
there's stuff floating through.

It would be extremely dangerous.

That was actually my second

saturation dive in the
industry after I did my course.

I was the least experienced.

So in that team,
I was basically the baby.

I think everyone
else in the chamber,

they thought, well,
it just worked out best.

I'm not the one that's
got to go inside first.

But the way it works
in a three-man bell team,

every day, you rotate.

And it just so
happened that that was

the day that I was diver one.

So that's why I was the
one to penetrate that vessel.

Right, OK, Niko, I'm with you.

I wouldn't say I was panicking,

but I was definitely
stressing about it.

It was a very, very daunting
prospect to get ready for.

Right, let's go down
that passageway.

Just look for doors
on either side, OK?

Let me know.

We're expecting
to find a body here.

Look around and see if
there's anybody in there.

Just keep checking up
above your head, Colby.

You're working
sometimes in there in

less than a meter visibility.

And you've got lots of
debris floating around,

all the loose things
that were in the vessel.

If you look on Discovery Channel

and all those other places,
you see these nice

scuba diving guys,

scuba diving through
wrecks and this and that.

It's not the same.

It's 100% different.

It is a horrible place to be.

It's like going
inside a nightmare.

And everywhere you go, if
you're going down the passage,

you're kicking up the silt,

you can't see anything,

there's stuff that
can fall on top of you.

It was just a
horrible experience.

I mean, if you
penetrate in a wreck,

it's got to be very
carefully managed.

To be honest with you,

you shouldn't be
penetrating anything.

I mean, if you look
at the size of me,

I'm not a small guy at all.

And for me to just
carry around inside

an upturned vessel
with zero visibility was,

it wasn't easy thing to do.

alright.

Okay, this is going in.

And if you look at our
saturation divers dressed,

you've got a harness on,

you've got a massive helmet
on your head with lights

and cameras, and you've
got a cylinder on your back.

It's quite a big profile to
walk down a small passage.

Just turning around, basically,

when you're going forward,
it's impossible.

You have to basically wiggle,

because if you turn around,
the passage inside that

vessel was so small,

that...your cylinder
would basically hit the

one side of the passage,
while you're busy trying to,

manoeuvre around the other side.

So in saturation diving,
you've got a massive,

thick umbilical and it doesn't

want to go around corners,
it doesn't want to bend.

And everything's
inside the umbilical.

You've got your hot water,
your communications,

your gas, your lights.

The light on my helmet
was the only light source

that was illuminating anything.

So if my umbilical got severed,

then that's the
end of the light.

And everything
is just pitch black,

there's nothing you can do.

You're not going
to come out alive.

And all the doors open
towards the inside.

So if you basically
go through a door

and you don't keep
the door open, if you're

coming back, then it
will lock on your umbilical.

Okay, before we
do anything there,

I'd like to secure
that one open.

You know,
don't go anywhere close

in that it can jam on you, okay?

Do you have any whammy on you?

Okay, just tie that one open.

So we had small
little pieces of rope.

You open the door up,

and then you basically
tie the handle onto the

balustrade to keep
the door in one position.

I mean, to penetrate with
an umbilical, it is, a danger.

Because obviously he's
going into rooms and then

he's coming back out
and then he's moving on.

So you want more umbilical
then you want less umbilical.

It's all about managing
that umbilical so it

doesn't get twisted or
tied around anything.

Your umbilical, if I say
that that's your lifeline,

that's an understatement.

Because if I was stuck
inside there, my umbilical got

severed and I had to swim

to the surface,
then I would be dead before

I reached the surface
because of the gas inside me.

I mean, you'll get
the bends like severely

and you'll probably
die immediately.

If something happened
to my umbilical,

you're not going to
come out the water alive.

That's it.

We knew that the only safe
way that we could affect that

was to have a second dive
standing outside of the wreck.

Okay, when you're ready,

let's get that umbilical
to him, okay, Daryl?

(Unclear dialogue)

Okay, Daryl, when you're
ready, go down his umbilical

and let's get to the job.

Right, Nico, hold on,
he's coming across.

(Unclear dialogue)

Daryl, the diver from
the outside, if anything

went wrong, Daryl would
have come to assist me.

But now I'm looking at it,
I realise that

wouldn't have been
an option there because

the problem is if
you send the diver

from the outside,
there's two divers

penetrating and there's no one

tending the umbilicals
on the outside.

So that's obviously
something you can't do.

We've still got a standby
diver back in the bell.

Okay, in the bell, ready

to select that
umbilical or take up umbilical,

please, on both divers.

Andre of the Bellman that's
supposed to be inside the bell,

Andre would have had to,

get dressed in his harness

to put his helmet on and
to jump out and then he'll,

have to tend both
umbilicals on the outside.

But practically having

me inside there, my umbilical
in the way, the Bellman on

the outside tending
both umbilicals

with his own umbilical,

floating around the water
is a very bad situation.

In reality, if I couldn't
get myself out from

the inside,
I'd probably die immediately.

Nico, I'm with you.

(Unclear dialogue)

Alright you're
on a window, yeah?

The diving vessel that
the divers were operating

from is controlled
by a satellite signal.

No anchors at all,
so it can move around.

It's using the thrusters
to stay in one position.

The GPS and torque
wires and all kinds

of different aspects
stay in one position.

So there's always a
possibility of having a runoff.

A runoff is when
the vessel loses

position and it might move.

If we'd have been in a situation

where the vessel would
have lost dynamic positioning,

we would have been in
a very precarious position.

If the vessel starts moving,
your umbilical isn't

going to stop that vessel.

It might kill you just
pulling out the vessel.

I mean, throughout the industry,

you have vessels having

runoffs and divers getting
dragged along the seabed.

I mean, obviously
getting dragged

along the seabed is fine,

but getting dragged through
the inside of the vessel,

I would have broken
every bone in my body.

It would be extremely dangerous.

I mean, there's
no doubt about it.

It would be...

It doesn't bear thinking
about it, to be honest.

And every time there
was a little bit of a creak

or a crack somewhere or a little

dink or a donk,
then you stop and you pause and

you're basically just
waiting for something to shift.

Every time you hear something,

then you think,
this is now...this is the end.

Is something going to shift?

Are things going to roll over?

So that was a
little bit stressful

and it was in the back of
my mind the whole time.

It is a danger.

I mean,
you're totally dependent on

everybody that's
working with you.

Are you inside, Nico?

I'm standing
outside the doorway.

Are you standing at the doorway?

Oh, what door is that?

At the front.

Okay. alright.
So you're at the port.

Oh, we're expecting
to find a body there.

Find a microwave?

What is that?

A microwave.

A locker.

There's nothing inside of it.

There's nothing, yeah?

It's difficult to get
that picture in your mind

because you're basically
upside down in this wreck.

So everything was in reverse.

So if you were going
left in a passage,

then you're
actually on the chart,

you were going right.

All stop, guys.

You do know where you
are on this, don't you?

Can you see?
Have you got any bits at all?

-Can you see anything?
-Yeah, that one.

So it was absolutely
emotionally distressful.

I really didn't enjoy doing it.

And obviously it was
something that we needed to do.

There, there's the door.

Can you open it or not?

Okay, let's open that please.

(Crashing sounds)

When I went inside,

the refrigerator fell over and
it basically blocked the door.

And it pushed the door
closed and it pinched

my umbilical against
the bottom of the door.

And it's definitely
not a big open space

that I can get out of.

-Stuck on the inside.
-Stuck on the inside?

(Unclear dialogue)

alright, this is not too good.

Okay, Nico, I'm with you.

It's a very small
space inside there.

Once I realized that
I'm stuck inside that,

I definitely would panic a bit.

(Diver struggling)

(struggling continues)

If I die,
will I just die like this?

Nobody knows where I am.

You can't find my dead body,
my wife, my family, my mother.

I was just thinking, if I die,

I don't think there's
anyone that can take

care of my wife better
than I can take care of her.

Just thinking how
she's going to suffer.

And I was just
thinking of how my mom

is going to feel as well too.

At this time, I started crying.

There's nothing,
I can't even talk to them.

I can't even see them. I can't,
I had no access to them, so...

I was thinking of two of them.

(Creaking)

After some time,
I started finding it

very difficult to breathe.

Because it's like, you breathe
normal, suddenly you start

struggling for air,

and you start seeing
the water advancing.

It's about covering the door.

That is when I started finding
it very difficult, and now

I understand that the oxygen
in that place is getting off.

You have to open your
mouth and force yourself,

just like you're opening your
lungs, why to suck the hell?

So from that moment,
I started feeling it.

It's just like a mosquito
trying to pierce you.

Same way.

So I knew I was crayfish.

When somebody falls in
the water, things that stick

on him first is the crayfish,
the crab, those things.

When they see humans
like that, they come after

the ear, the eyes,
nose, like that.

So it's like feeling
sticks all over my body.

I can't stop them
because they're just there

sticking, sticking,
sticking, sticking, sticking.

I was hearing a bite,

like an animal is
trying to shoot something.

It bites like this so,

I was not thinking,
this is not shark or barracuda,

those are the two things
that come in my mind.

I'm really eating
the dead bodies.

So when I just try to watch
my food, so sometimes I try,

but still in the water,
there's nothing you can do.

So it's just like if I see
the water boiling or see

any move in the water,
then I can't help myself.

The thought also bring so much
fear to me as well too that,

I'm going to die and all these
things are going to eat me up.

I was expecting very soon
that it's going to be over,

because I started feeling dizzy,
like I want to sleep.

But if I pass out,

I know that will be the
first job of the crayfish.

And then I start praying.

I say, God, if it's your will,
I'm going to die like this.

No problem,
I know it's from you.

But if it's not your will,

make a way for me so I
can go out from this place.

If it ends, let it end.

But God, if it's your will,
as it is in heaven,

I'm ready to go.

alright,
how are you doing Nico?

(Loud bang)

I tried to control
my level of panic.

So you're going to push
against the cupboards.

You're just going to
have to keep pushing.

I managed to lift
the fridge up and

I managed to find my
way back out of here.

Are you winning?

Are you getting the door open?

(Unclear dialogue)

OK, well done.

I managed to open the door.

It was the biggest relief
that I've ever had in my life.

I mean, this was an
exceptional circumstance.

To be that isolated and to
be that deep and that far inside

an upturned wreck is a really,
really dangerous place to be.

I didn't have any children,
but now that I've got children,

I might make a
different decision,

as to whether I
should continue or not.

It's not the sort of thing that,

you would
normally plan to do.

But I have to say
that on the day, I think,

everybody's hearts
ruled their heads.

I mean, obviously, I'm inside

there to find a body
or to look for bodies.

What's this on your left here?

Is that a body?

A chair.

It still is difficult
because if you go inside,

because the vessel capsized,

the bed's upside down, the
mattress is all over the show.

OK, mattress, yeah.

No, no, the mattress
is not the best.

Yeah, Roger.

If you step on
top of a mattress,

I can tell you now
that stepping on top of

a mattress and stepping
on someone's dead

body on the thigh,
it feels exactly the same.

So the amount of times
I got a cold feeling down

my spine and I stuck my
hand down and I felt pain.

It's only a pillow.

It's only a mattress.

It's happened quite a few times.

And a couple of the times,
it wasn't a mattress.

I was always walking
down the passage.

That's why I know how it feels
like when you're basically,

touching it with your foot.

As I was walking,
I stepped on a person

I could feel that
there's a body there.

alright, you found one, yeah?

Mm-hm.

OK, we're taking
the body out, yeah?

We are taking the body up.

OK, yeah.

You know, you think that
you are strong mentally

until you are requested
to do something like that.

And then even when
you get requested,

you think, yeah, I can do this.

I should be able to do this.

And then when
you touch the body,

when you find someone,
there's nothing

that can prepare you
for that initial shock

and that emotional
flood that comes

from actually seeing
someone there,

and then having to
handle the body.

And it was just...
It was a horrible experience.

alright, have we got a bag?

Have we got a bag, yeah?

Yeah, got a bag.

It's difficult to explain,
but you've got to...

Obviously, it's a human being,

but you've got to
get that out of your

mind and you've got
to try and focus on just

putting something inside a bag.

We were provided with body bags,

and each of the bodies
that we found were put into

body bags by the two divers
and they were brought back up to

the surface,
where we had a container,

a refrigerated container.

It was a hard experience
for everybody on board,

because everybody
was involved in it.

It was absolutely
emotionally distressful.

Okay, so we're going
to put a bag on him

and it'll be number one, Roger.

That's alright, that's good.

When obviously
rigor mortis had set in,

so it was difficult to
manipulate the body.

Me and Daryl,
we had to pretty much,

push the arms and use
a rope just to secure the

arms against the body so we can
get the bodies inside the bags.

Okay, confirm we got
him on the bridge, yeah?

So he's going to be
number one bridge, Roger.

Obviously, it was something
that we needed to do

but I wouldn't wish
that on my worst enemy.

alright,
so once we've done this,

we'll get back on
to the wreck and we'll

keep looking for
more on the bridge, yeah?

Right, Nico, you want to go in?

I'm ready.

Right, let's go down that
passageway, alright?

And let's get to the captain.

And the door's going to
be on the left-hand side.

So just bear in mind,
you're going

sort of downhill now, yeah?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It feels like you're sliding
down the passageway.

-Yeah, that's right, yeah.
-alright.

Okay, there's the railing.

Just hold your hand
on the railing and

let's just keep
going along the rail.

You're on the bottom.

I found a body.

You found a body, okay.

stress that I experienced
when I was doing that

realised there was a survivor,

Immediately all these
emotions start flooding,

and you start thinking
about different scenarios and

what are we going to do.

to get him out?

It was completely,
completely overwhelming,

there's a lot that goes
through your mind.

So the wreck is
sitting on the seabed,

at 34 metres and
it was completely,

tipped over upside
down and back to front -

left's right, right's left,
the floor's the ceiling,

the ceiling's the floor.

The gangways on the
vessel are narrow anyway,

much more than a door width,

and you've got different
levels so you've got stairs

going up which effectively
are stairs going down.

I mean, it was a very
difficult thing to do,

especially that far and
that deep into the wreck.

It was in the front
part of the wreck.

The wreck is upside down.

It was in a cabin.
You've got to bring him out,

and then you've got to get
him back into the diving bell,

and then you've got to bring
him back into the dive system,

because he can't go
straight to the surface,

because the time he'd
been down underwater,

you'd kill him
because of the bends.

I mean, it'd been three
full days underwater.

We had to then, come up
with a plan to get him out.

You can see the
wedding ring on his finger,

so he's a family man.

You've got this person's
life in your hands.

I felt there was a
lot of pressure on us,

to make sure that he survives
coming from that little space,

inside that boat,
to see his family again.

while they're busy
I could hear the

conversations going
on in the dive control.

nobody else did at that stage.

that everybody knew

I never knew that
sort of process.

Inside of me, the whole thing
that was in my brain was:

If someone comes to rescue you,

you want to see the confidence
in that person's eyes.

This person is here to save me.

By then we didn't expect
to find anybody alive...

and the fact that we did, that
gave us a good problem to solve.

that we found him,

he was starting to
breathe very heavily

which was as a result of the,

As a saturation diver,

your breathing system, but
the mix that we were breathing

was helium and oxygen,
but I didn't know how the

helium inside the
mix will affect his body.

There was a discussion about

is it possible for us
to give him that mix.

it's helium, we can't do that.

Obviously there was a
lot of communication,

going backwards and forwards

to shore and a lot of info
from various different people.

It's not like we had,

till the end of days

The clear option, or the
only option was to get him out.

that would freak
you out completely.

the water in my mind,

we didn't really think about

at the time, was that Harrison,

had no idea what

so when we came to

I grabbed him and I

60-odd hours it was essential
that he didn't go up quickly,

to a shallower depth,

then bubbles are
released in the bloodstream,

and the easiest way to
explain it is by shaking

this bottle of soda and
then releasing the pressure

and as you see bubbles come out,

the same is going to
happen in your bloodstream,

and that can cause death.

Look for the green
rope Harrison.

He was touching the rope,

and then I saw
his hands on it and

it looked like he was
just floating in the water.

Before I could pick that,

I'm already floating away
from the green rope.

I don't have the strength,
to get to that green rope.

When I saw him
floating around the water,

I thought that he'd passed out.

I was asking myself,

"how are we going to
get out of this place?"

I never knew –
I didn’t even knew where I am.

I was just watching to

be a bit tight when we've

got all three of you,
all four of you in there.

So we had to basically
prop Harrison up against the,

top of the bell,

just to get enough,
space for us to close the door.

And then the belt was
pulled back to the vessel.

And, Harrison was back on, well,

not on dry land,
but back under pressure,

but he was safely
controlled environment.

Please explain to Harrison that,
you know,

he's going to be in the chamber

with you for another
almost, you know,

approximately 36 hours.

So that would be like
three days in the chamber

with three more guys, Roger.

Roger, Roger.

And I appreciate
your hard work, guys.

That was amazing, man, today.

The last time I saw Harrison,

after we rescued him,
was when he entered the

decompression chamber.

He was in the chamber with us.

where we gave him some clothes,
because obviously his

clothes was, he had only
a pair of boxer shorts on.

To us, it was a good ending
to the story, knowing that

he's on surface, he's fine,

and he's gone home and
he's rejoined his family.

He went back on helicopter.

We went back to work.

As soon as we found one
person alive, we went from

body recovery mode into
rescue mode immediately.

There could be somebody alive.

We always thought
there was a chance.

And we did a quick
turnaround to get more divers

in the water,
to go look for more survivors.

Because obviously if there's
one person alive, then there's a

possibility of other people that
might be in the same position.

That sort of drove
everybody out to see if there

were going to be more
people alive, of course.

Unfortunately,
that wasn't the case.

And we were able to
care for 11 out of 12 people.

(Deep rumbling)

It's better now.

I used to have quite a
few nightmares about,

seeing the bodies.

Ever since then, I never
walk inside a vessel without

knowing exactly where I
am and where my cabin is.

And from my cabin, even
if the vessel's upside down,

I'll find my route
out of the cabin.

It's always in the
back of my mind,

knowing exactly where I am.

Another thing I
usually check is if

I can fit through the
window and that there's

something inside the room
that I can break it with.

Always.

(Tender music)

After the incident,
that first one year,

I can't even get close
to water because

even in my own house
when I sleep in my bed,

I feel the bed is sinking.

I feel the whole
house is sinking.

So when I woke
and I want to run out

like that,
my wife keeps telling me,

come down, you're inside
the house, this is not a boat.

For me, it's changed
the way that I look at my life.

It's changed the
way that I do my job.

I'm a different person
because of what happened.

And for, in my opinion,
in positive ways.

When someone is
basically on the brink of dying,

and you manage to get him out of

there and save his life,
it was the most

rewarding thing that
I've ever done in my life.

It's one of the...
I can only compare

it to the birth of my children.

There's few things that compare
to that feeling when you've,

done something
to save someone's life.

Nico has been my friend right
from the day after the incident.

I think we'll
always be together.

I always check on him,
he always checks on me as well.

I believe we're
always together for life.

There's a dive school
in the town that I stay in,

in South Africa,
and I managed to

connect Harrison with
the owner of the school.

So he then said, why don't
you just take the diving course?

If I want to become a
diver, they can help me.

But my mum, everybody
in my house was scared.

Don't know it's risky,

even though it's a risky job,
don't go there.

But if Nico, that rescued me,

that knows what I went
through, he's telling me that

you can become
a diver if you want.

You just need to
go for the course.

If he can say that, I can do it.

So I just break the fear off me.

And I got the course done.

Now he's an offshore diver,
and he's diving in the industry.

And I've spoken to
some of his supervisors,

he's doing quite well.

I mean it's great that
he's now gone on to

pursue a career as
a commercial diver.

Starting out that
way can only get easier.

But if I'm sailing,
I'm always outside.

I don't want to stay inside.
I will be outside.

I don't sleep inside.

Because I knew
what could go wrong.

I finally discovered
that this life is short,

and you can't predict,

you don't know what will
happen the next minute

So I don't take things serious.

I don't quarrel,
I don't get angry.

I always get calm.
When you talk, I smile.

Because it has changed me
