memories of an island.

Almost 50 years of memories.

I acted there.
I directed there.

My best friendships
were grounded there.

And for a time,
it' was my home as Well.

It has been
such an incredible part of my life.

And I met Ingmar there.

He changed my life.

The first time I met Ingmar...

as shy as I was
and as afraid as I was...

I just also felt this familiarity.

And he was
so much older than me.

You know, I was 25 then...

and he was 46.

He wasn't only this incredible...

incredible creative person.

But I remember
each morning when he came...

I just started to cry
because I was so overwhelmed...

and suddenly I wasn't
overwhelmed anymore.

I was-

I was so much in - in love.

♪♪' [ Music Box]

The first summer was pure happiness.

We were making Persona
on the island. It was hot.

♪♪ [ Humming ]

I was experiencing
another human being.

He was experiencing me.

And we didn't need
to talk about it.

I was barefoot
in the sand so fine...

it felt as if
it breathed beneath my feet.

I never wondered
what might come of our relationship.

It was as if I were living
within soft walls...

of sunlight and desire...

and happiness.

No summer since...

has ever been like that.

Not like that.

I was always reading a book
in between takes...

and once I looked up,
and they were still doing...

a lot with the camera...

and I looked up, and -

and Sven Nykvist,
the cinematographer...

he was doing things
with the camera...

and then there,
doing nothing, was Ingmar...

and he was just... looking at me.

And I knew he felt
something for me...

and it was almost unusual that
someone would feel something for me...

and that it was Ingmar.

And when I saw him
sitting there by the camera...

and looking at me,
I knew he had recognized me...

and deep down, I thought...

“lf I'm really recognized...

I'm worth... loving.”

[ Man's Voice]
My dear Liv...

you are everywhere -

in the light
against' a window...

in the bathroom door...

on the bed, in the chair.

It hurts like hell to see you
on the other side of the glass wall.

I pray you bond with me.

My heart misses you
as if I no longer had...

any skin on my body.

That you would embrace me
and obtain me...

in what is you...

in your femininity and tenderness.

This is a little like hell.

Almost romantic.

[Sighing, Echoing ]

[ Liv] In the evenings,
Ingmar and Sven Nykvist...

and Bibi Andersson and I,
we would sit at the table...

and we would do this card game...

where the ghosts or something...

lead your hand.

And all the time,
it would say...

“lngmar, beware”...

or “Liv, beware”...

and “lngmar sees you.”

I thought, “This is incredible.
A ghost is kind of seeing this!”

And I was a little naive.

I never understood,
although Bibi told me each evening...

“lt's Ingmar doing it.
Don't believe it's a ghost.

Ingmar is doing this.”

We were like children here,
you know?

We used to go on walks...

and we would bury money, you know?

Just in case we were poor,
we would bury money...

somewhere here -
not big money, but some money.

We were childish.
We were so childish.

And we -

I was very, very happy
for a long time.

Very much in the beginning,
when we understood, “It's us”...

I got scared,
because I was 25...

he was 46, 47,
and I escaped.

I escaped back to Norway.
I didn't want this.

“This is too heavy.”
it's not like looking at the man...

and he sees you
and falls a little in love.

This was too heavy.
I was really, really scared.

But he came and got me!

You know, he's crazy.

He traveled to Norway...

and he went
to people close to me...

and he said,
“She has to be with me.”

And those people -

and, strangely,
very close people -

came back with him
to my flat and said...

“Yeah, you'd better
go with him.”

And - And -
And so I went with him.

I sought the absolute security...

protection,
a great need to belong.

He sought a mother...

arms that would open to him...

warm and without complications.

Perhaps our love
originated in the loneliness...

we both had known before.

His hunger for togetherness...

was insatiable.

That hunger became
a vital necessity for me.

In a way, each seeded
a revolution in the other.

We opened to each other
so completely -

not only physically,
not only sexually...

but like human beings related...

in a secret way.

We bound ourselves together.

I told my husband immediately
what had happened.

I can't talk
for Ingmar and his wife.

I cannot talk
because I don't know.

I only know what Ingmar told me.
I don't know.

But... I...

I was almost more afraid...

to tell his mother,
my husband's mother...

because she had four sons,
and she really cared for me...

as a daughter.

And when I went back
to Sweden...

and, you know, I wrote her
and said it was over...

and that I was expecting...

a child with another man...

this old-fashioned lady,
she wrote me, she said...

“When you married my son,
I got a daughter.

She's going to have a child.
I look very much forward to it.”

So I've been
so fortunate in life.

I've done bad things...

like, I left my husband,
but good things happened from that...

because people were so good.

[ Man's Voice]
Now there is only one demand...

and that is to be alive.

Dare to give life.

Dare to receive life.

And dare to let it hurt.

And dare to let it feel good.

To dare, my love.

[ Liv] Once, we wandered
far away from the others...

discovered a small ridge
of gray stones...

with barren, unfertile
earth beyond.

We sat and looked
at the sea...

which for once lay
completely still in the sunlight.

He took my hand in his
and said...

“I had a dream last night...

that you and I
are painfully connected.”

On the spot
where we were sitting...

he built his house...

and that changed his life...

and mine.

We entered underneath
the thin scaffolding...

into the skeleton of our home.

Someone had brought champagne.
I broke the bottle.

We made speeches
and christened the house.

We walked on the beach,
which was nothing but rocks...

and took pictures
of each other.

I look happy in all of them.

But I know
what I was thinking -

“This is a dream.

I am taking pan'
in someone else's dream.”

[ Ship's Horn Sounding]

It started to be
someone else's dream, living here...

because it was restricted.

He didn't want me to have visitors.

The first - next summer...

he built a big wall
of stone around...

so if people somehow
came around here...

they could never
look in at the house.

And it started to be
someone else's dream...

someone who really wanted
complete isolation...

with me and him.

And he didn't want me...

to leave either and go home.

We made two movies...

when I was living with him...

and my one free day
was the Wednesdays...

when I could go to the place...

where everybody else
in the crew was living...

to wash my hair.

And that was
my big, wonderful day, you know?

I went there,
and I had whiskey...

and had fun with the others
and laughed and did...

what any 28-year-olds do.

And then it was going back...

and I had
an exact time to come back...

and he would stand by the -

There were a lot of fences on this road
so that sheep would not go...

and he would stand
by one of the fences...

and wait for me
and look at the time.

But yes, it became a prison...

and everything was unfamiliar.

In the winter,
it was cold and it was black...

and these trees
had no color, and -

and he sat in his room...

and he wrote these masterpieces...

and listened to his music,
and I would, you know-

I knew that Ingmar
had found his island...

and I tried to love it
the way he did.

What is it?

Nothing. I just thought
of something from my childhood.

It was some sort
of punishment.

They threw me into a closet

and shut the door.

It was quiet and dark.

I was scared out of my mind,
and I pounded the door,

because they'd told me
a little person lived in that closet.

[ Liv] On the nights
when he couldn't sleep...

I would lie silent beside him...

afraid of what he was thinking.

Perhaps that I was not
a pan' of the island. ..

That I disturbed the harmony
he tried to create within himself...

in the nature and the stillness
that meant so much to him.

My security became
living the way he wished...

for only then was he secure.

[ Man's Voice ] I can reach
my hands towards you and say...

“Don't be afraid, Liv.

I will not do you any harm.

I love you.”

The demons
have left' me for now...

but it was terrible
while it lasted.

IS YOUR HAND IN MINE?

[Liv]
At night -

and I'm not talking sexually now -

lying in that bed...

listening to the ocean...

and the way he...

held around me...

and there was nothing...

unquestioned.

We had a child together.

How can I explain...

the enormous feeling
of security...

in knowing that now
she was with me in the world?

Soon her bed
would stand next to mine.

We would fall asleep

that my daughter's father

after she was born...

and twisted the ring
he had given me...

put on the light to admire it...

read the letter he had written
to his daughter and me.

No danger in the world
could reach me that night.

Dreams seldom become reality.

I don't know.

[ Liv] In the loneliness
on the island...

I was often nervous
and a short-tempered mother.

There were days
with guilt feelings...

when I became
the doormat for both of them -

and she
who could barely walk...

and cried for me
from the other end of the house.

I rushed from one to the other...

I had happy memories
of my husband and our love.

I was confronted with his jealousy -

violent and without bounds.

to our relationship.

our drama.

I have a lot of anger in me,
but I don't always let it out.

But I'm so lucky
I have a profession...

where I can really let it out.

And of course in every other movie
I did with Ingmar...

she is so angry,
and people are hitting her...

and doing whatever
bad things to her...

and she comes right back...

and she is furious.

I got it all out...

in my movies.

Also my enormous anger
that I had at times.

There you are.

What are you doing?
- I'm praying for Johan.

You're praying for yourself.

Goddamn lousy acting.

[ Liv ]
His jealousy was violent -

I mean, more psychologically...

than using force, physical force.

Because he knew how to say things
that would stay with you...

forever.

I was to stand and watch a fire...

and he must have been angry,
because he said, “Liv, go closer!”

And I went as close as I could.

“Liv, I told you to go closer. ”

And I went closer.

You know, I would almost
have gone into the fire...

because you do what your director says,
especially if it's Ingmar Bergman.

But afterwards,
I knew that anger in his voice...

was not directing.

That anger in the voice

was Ingmar to Liv.

Oh, we would quarrel so much.
Really quarrel.

And we would run here -

I was first, because I was
scared of him when he was angry -

and he'd run after me...

and finally I went
into the bathroom...

and closed the door
and thought it would work...

and he was so furious,
and he stood outside...

and he took his leg...

and he smashed it
through the door.

So the feet came,
and the slipper fell into the bathroom.

But that was also so fun.

So we became friends on that.

[ Man's Voice]
Dear Liv...

I think that Ingmar Bergman
is unbearable sometimes...

and I have to apologize
on his behalf.

I have spoken to him,
and he has promised...

that he will be glorious
at 2:30 p.m.

[ Liv]
The fear diminished...

and the loneliness
was easier to bear...

when I saw his insecurity.

I'd become filled
with tenderness...

and look beyond his violence...

and his injustice.

“I cannot and will not
live with you anymore.

I don't believe in trying again,

as neither you nor I
seriously want to change.

because that will only lead
to new complications,

thirty-minus degrees -

He didn't understand why we had
to stay in the boat all the time...

in this freezing -

This time he was really cruel.

I hated him so much...

and I was planning, “I'm going
to leave him. I'm going to leave him.”

And he probably
never knew my anger...

because I came up afterwards...

and he said,
“Oh, beautiful scene.

Everything is good,”
and I smiled...

and we went back here
in the evening...

and... it was never mentioned.

I was no longer blind...

to his faults and weaknesses...

as I had been
in the beginning...

but my understanding
and respect for him grew.

The adoration disappeared.

I noticed that his hair was gray.

He was much older than I.

He was wise and stimulating.

He was vain and egoistical.

And I discovered
to my surprise...

that this was love.

With sadness, I realized
that it would soon be over...

that I had come to him
when he was already...

on his way somewhere else.

I looked at our child
and realized...

that I would soon have
the responsibility alone.

During the last year,
I fought for our relationship...

even though I knew
it was hopeless...

and not right for either of us.

I have to leave now
to avoid traffic.

when I packed all my clothes.

My daughter's things
were left behind.

Those I didn't dare touch.

It would have been

I wanted to open my arms
and embrace it all...

but because my fear that it would
never be mine was so great...

it never became mine.

I lived there
for a brief period of my life...

and what I brought away with me
was not the stones...

and the trees and the beauty.

I left with loneliness
in my baggage...

and the feeling that
something inside of me...

had changed forever.

What is there to tell
about the actual departure?

The publicity
around the private grief?

The newspapers
that pushed into our lives...

stomped on what was painful?

Magazines with cover pictures
from our first time together...

smiling and happy faces
with black captions -

“His new life without Liv.

Read the end of the story.”

In our misery,
we were on an intimate footing...

with half of Scandinavia.

It was terrible, and I cried and cried.

And then on the airplane, you know...

a colleague of mine was there...

and I wrote letters to him
how terrible this was...

and he had to help me,
and my letters were so bad...

that later I asked him,
“What did you do with the letters?”

I said, on the airplane.

He said, “I ate them because
I didn't want anyone to see them.”

So he ate my letters.

And then we landed,
and then in the airport...

was a group of people
with signs...

and I thought, “This is a protest
for Vietnam or something.

Do I need that also
when I have such sorrow?”

No, it wasn't that.

It was my girlfriends,
my colleagues -

Harriet Andersson,
Gunnel Lindblom, Bibi Andersson...

everybody I'd worked with...

in this time in Sweden.

And I wasn't even Swedish,
I was Norwegian...

but there they were in the airport
with the signs that said...

“Welcome home, Liv.

You are our Swede.

We love you, Liv.”

And then we all went home
to Bibi Andersson's...

and we were all lying on the floor
drinking red wine...

talking about love that was lost
and what we had experienced.

It was such a beautiful, beautiful...

evening and night.

Now, this is one of the good memories
I have of Ingmar...

although this was when he had -
when he was gone.

And then I went to Norway...

and continued acting
in the theater...

and... that's when
Ingmar came back.

But I had been on the floor
with these women...

and talked about,
you know, love...

and so there was
no way back for me.

Nora stands in the door
and says...

“I don't know
what will become of me.

I don't know where I'm going.

I only know that I can
no longer bother...

about what others say.

I must find my own way.”

To me...

Helmer and Nora's last scene...

is not a bravura number
for Nora.

That would be too easy.

This is not how we leave
someone we have loved...

presumably still love.

It is not with fanfare
and the sound of drums...

that we walk away
from the familiar...

and go out
into a new and strange world...

with so little knowledge.

It is a little girl...

who slams the door
behind her...

a little girl
in the process of growing up.

On stage, what I'm acting
is reality for me...

in the same way
that my reality is acting -

each a part of the whole.

It's Sunday morning...

and my four-year-old
is in the living room...

talking on the telephone
with her father.

She is having
a lively discussion with Ingmar.

She wants him to crawl
through the telephone...

and visit her.

I cry at times.

My child suddenly
stands in the doorway.

“Why are you crying, Mama?"

“Sometimes I feel a bit lonely.”

“You have me.”

“But grown-ups need
other grown-ups as well.”

“You have Granny
and Aunt Nan.”

“Once in a while
you long for a person...

who will look after you.”

“Well, you have that one
on Fårö.”

[ Man's Voice]
Liv...

now I can see
that this separation...

was absolutely necessary.

Otherwise, We would have
mosz' definitely...

set each other on fire.

And we could have
still managed to have...

some sort of life together.

By the Way- --

I am in constant
physical and emotional pain.

You see,
I love you so much...

my little beloved friend.

You let go...

and that's a good lesson
to learn in life.

Let go.

Don't grow into a bitter
“And what if?”...

and “What if I'd done this?”

Never, never.

Let go.

Ingmar was no longer
in my life as before.

That was a fact,
and nothing could alter it.

But I still had myself...

contact with my own being.

Everything in me
that I wanted to take forward.

I missed
Ingmar's daily presence...

but I knew
I had his friendship...

and it was up to me,
who at that time needed it most...

to find a new point of contact...

at which we both could meet.

With all the power I owned...

I built a bridge between us.

And after that,
everything was better.

When we broke up,
he was really there.

You know, normally you call
a girlfriend and say...

“You know -” and she will
comfort you and whatever.

I called him,
who had broken up with me...

and he comforted me,
and it was really lovely...

for a long time.

I called every day...

and once I actually called
when I'd been drinking a lot...

and I think I said
very bad things too.

And the next day,
I thought I had dreamt that...

and so I called him
again to say...

“You'll be really happy
I didn't call you yesterday...

because I was
so angry at you.”

And he said,
“Yes, you did call me.”

Yes, so he was a -

a witness, and...

that was good,
and that was lovely.

The first night of Britannicus.

On stage,
I am two people.

One tries to act.

The other stands beside...

criticizing every movement,
every word.

These two people,
who are both me...

get tangled up together,
make me feel sick...

and I seriously consider
pretending to faint...

so that the curtain can come down.

[ Audience Applauding ]

In the night,
my agent phones and tells me...

I can become
an international star...

but not if I intend
to sit in Oslo.

A decision
slowly forms in the dark.

I feel that change
is in the offing.

[ Flashbulbs Popping ]

It was an adventure,
and I looked upon it...

as a birthday gift...

but I never took it...

really, really serious...

because I was now
a little over 30 years...

and when I came to Hollywood...

I had wonderful luggage...

because I had worked with Ingmar...

on several films.

I was nominated for an Oscar...

for The Emigrants...

Jan Troell's film...

and everybody
wanted to work with me.

And my agent,
who was really very happy...

said yes to everything.

And so within -

within one year...

I did four Hollywood movies.

And they thought,
“This is the new Greta Garbo.”

[ Flashbulbs Popping]

And I did something that
Greta Garbo never managed -

I closed down two studios.

[ Helicopter Blades Whirring]

Sometimes fantasies
are more fun, aren't they?

- You meet a better class of people in
your dreams. - [Audience Laughing ]

Sometimes you do in your dreams than in
real life, but you have to deal with that.

That's true. Well, you are not
a disappointment, I can say that.

- Isn't that nice?
- Yes.

- Are you flirting with me?
- Yes.

In front of all these people?
I'm really getting a little -

[Audience Laughing,
Applauding ]

Ingmar loved it. He loved it.

Calling him, you know,
and telling him -

he just loved it.

I mean, even the fiascos, he -
“Oh, she's having fun. This is great.”

And he never, never
put a question mark...

on me doing that.

Never a question mark
on me going to Broadway.

As a matter of fact,
he even traveled to New York...

when I did my first one,
A Doll's House.

And he came to New York
in the afternoon...

the next day
he saw the matinee...

and the next day
he went back to Sweden.

I was so moved by that...

because it was so...

unlike him.

And why did he come,
you know?

L-I still don't understand.

Why did he come
for one and a half days...

when he hated to be in planes
and travel and everything?

[Audience Applauding, Cheering ]

I spent some months
in Hollywood...

and tried to sparkle.

When something
inside me protested...

I reminded myself
I would soon be home again.

I was looking forward
to making a film...

on the island in Sweden.

I was like a figurehead
on an old ship...

she who is standing seemingly
so proud at the bow...

and plows through the waves
and gazes ahead...

while her whole body,
at an angle...

is pressed close to the ship...

to which she belongs.

I tried to recall...

who I had been
when I came to the island...

five years before.

Something had been
crushed in me...

and something was more alive.

I had undergone
a change.

And when bitterness
and hate...

and despair
were gone...

I was sure
I had experienced love...

and been enriched.

But I would never be able
to talk about it.

I'd seen into another person
and was full of...

tenderness
for what I had found.

For a period of time,
we had taken each other's hands...

and been painfully connected.

But only when it was all over...

did we become true friends.

[ Indistinct Conversation ]

[ People Shouting, Faint]

And now I was really over him,
really over him.

But I was thinking, you know.
And I was with...

my good girlfriends
who were in the movie...

Ingrid Thulin
and Harriet Andersson...

so it occurred to me
I had never really told him...
