Braveness of the Ming

Episode 05

This jade thumb ring has a smooth, white, and fine texture.

The carvings all over it are seamlessly integrated with the ring.

Truly fine jade.

If I'm not mistaken,

this style of jade thumb ring likely came from the Western Regions.

Because only there can one find such top-quality material.

Miss, do you understand jade?

I only know a little. My father is a merchant.

I've just picked up

a bit of superficial knowledge by his side since childhood.

I also deal in some jewelry and jade pieces.

Perhaps I've even had business with your father.

Please, take a look at this jade bracelet.

Ever since my father fell on hard times,

those former fellows

and some business partners

gradually drifted away from us.

My mother, because of this matter,

became deeply depressed and fell seriously ill.

My father, unable to afford the medicine,

led me to kneel in front of the doctor's door

for an entire night.

But in the end, my mother still...

My father and mother were deeply devoted to each other.

After my mother passed, my father couldn't accept it.

Not long after, my father also fell ill.

This jade bracelet

is the only thing my mother left me.

Before she died, my mother instructed me

that no matter what happens,

I must never sell it.

I must keep it for my future dowry.

But...

in the current situation,

to save my father,

I have no choice but to bear the pain and sell this bracelet.

Customer, please come inside.

Customer, your dishes.

Who are you looking at?

Buddy, do you know that girl?

More than just know her, an old acquaintance.

Then you should introduce me.

You really want to meet her?

What's wrong?

Could she be some kind of female monster?

More terrifying than a monster.

My mother has already left my father and me.

I can't just stand by and watch my father

suffer from illness and eventually leave me too.

But I truly have no other way.

If my father and I had another choice,

how could I possibly bear to sell

the bracelet my mother left me?

Well... I'll buy the jade bracelet.

What a good performance!

The money...

use it to find a good doctor for your father.

Thank you, young master!

Sister.

I finally found you.

Do you know

father's hair has turned white from searching for you?

Who are you? I don't know you.

Alright.

Let me tell you, she's my younger sister.

You two...

My sister is too stubborn.

Because the family arranged a marriage for her, and she disagreed.

How many times is this now?

This is already the seventh time she's run away from home.

When did I become your younger sister?

Don't listen to his nonsense.

How could I be his sister?

We don't look alike, do we?

Don't we?

You've been following me

all the way from Qingzhou to here.

Aren't you bored?

What right do you have to control me?

See? I said we knew each other.

No.

Take care.

Young master, this bracelet...

What?

What a shrew!

Not very skilled, right?

Learn from me.

Miss Xie.

Miss Xie, the room fee for the past few days,

shouldn't you pay me now?

I will definitely pay the room fee tomorrow.

This is a small inn, and funds are tight.

I have to ask for the rent, please understand.

But, miss,

you don't necessarily have to stay in this superior room.

There's an empty room downstairs facing north,

and it's much cheaper.

Fine.

This is mine, give it to me.

Stop it, don't fight me for it.

This is all that's left of value in the house.

I said this is mine. Get away.

I haven't even been married into this family for two years yet.

You wretched woman, who can I turn to?

- Stop fighting. - Shut up. Get lost.

Stop fighting!

- Stop fighting. - Get away!

Get lost!

Mother!

My wife!

Mother.

- Mother! - My wife!

- You... - Get out!

Get out quickly, all of you!

- Father. - Don't come again. Get lost!

Are you alright, Father?

This...

is the only thing

your mother left for you. No matter what happens...

You can't even pawn it off.

Mother, you once taught me,

"When the granaries are full, people know propriety and honor."

I haven't forgotten these words.

But right now, how can I care about that?

If you're not angry,

please bless me so I don't go hungry tomorrow.

My lord,

my men have been tailing Xia Xun for several days.

He went to Yanggu County,

seemingly looking for some business deal.

He is still working for Prince of Qi.

The message I had you deliver, did he show any reaction?

From my subordinates' descriptions,

I really don't see any indication

that he intends to join our side.

He has quite an appetite.

He wants to take a share

from both me and Bai Yixia.

Nothing that good comes easy.

Then what should we do in the future?

If I can't have it, no one else will.

If he can't be used, kill him.

I understand.

Xia,

I'm telling you straight,

this trip to Beiping is just for making money.

Any other dangerous matters are completely off the table.

Two guests, please come inside.

What would you like to eat?

Two bowls of beef noodles, two eggs.

Coming right up!

Add a bit more, please.

Sure thing!

Enjoy your meal.

Boss, hurry up!

Alright!

Here's your noodles, sir.

Run!

Are you okay? Protect the child.

Go quickly!

Be careful!

Impressive.

Let's go.

Xia, what should we do?

It's fine.

Run!

In our vast Great Ming, [Ji Gang, from Linyi.]

how can you to kill people in broad daylight?

You two, go first.

Buddy.

Then I'll leave it to you.

Be careful!

Go!

I can't run anymore.

How are you?

- Are you two injured? - Can't run anymore.

No, we're fine.

Thank you, young hero, for stepping in to save us.

You're welcome.

I just couldn't stand by and watch

them bullying two weak scholars.

Listen to you.

If we were martial arts masters today,

can you just stand by and watch us die?

That's not it. It would depend on who had the upper hand.

No way, you're just taking advantage to finish us off.

No.

In my eyes, there's no strong or weak,

only right and wrong.

I saw them attacking you so viciously.

Since I witnessed it,

I had to step in and help.

That's my principle in life.

Alright.

I am Yang Xu. May I ask your name, young hero?

I will definitely visit you another day with a generous gift.

You're underestimating me too much.

Then consider it as an exchange between friends.

Surely you can accept that, young hero?

Alright.

I am Ji Gang, from Linyi.

I've read some books.

Now that foreign tribes are eyeing the Central Plains,

I want to abandon literature for martial arts to serve the court.

I just haven't found the right way yet.

Perhaps the opportunity hasn't come.

Ji, you have the world in your heart.

Truly remarkable.

I feel ashamed in comparison.

By the way, I wonder who you two offended?

Why were they so intent on killing you?

It has nothing to do with me. That, it's just...

They were only after money.

To be honest,

we are both merchants.

We're traveling from Yanggu to Beiping now

to conduct some business.

But I don't know why

the bandits would strike here.

Maybe they had been watching us for a while.

Bandits?

They could exchange three moves with me.

If they were just bandits,

that would be a waste of such martial skills.

Ji,

to be honest about this matter,

I am actually just an ordinary merchant.

But to help the poor people afford rice,

I lowered the rice price.

This offended my competitors.

But I truly never expected

they would send a group of

such ruthless assassins to kill me.

It really infuriates me.

Since ancient times, it's said that

merchants love to raise prices when people are poor

to seek personal profit.

I never thought you would be so kind-hearted, Mr. Yang.

It truly fills me with admiration.

Ji,

I actually come from a poor family after all.

I know that

the peck of rice, this single coin

means nothing to us.

But for those poor commoners,

it's extremely important.

So,

now that we have a good life,

we must not forget our roots.

Well said! With these words of yours,

I am determined to befriend you.

Good.

I am also determined to befriend you.

Count me in too.

But in terms of age,

I should call you Brother Yang.

Brother Yang, we hit it off right away.

Since you are also going to Beiping,

I'll travel with you.

In terms of knowledge, I am not as good as you.

But in terms of martial arts,

I am confident I can lend you a hand.

Excellent.

Ximen,

this journey is going to be lively.

Beiping, Beiping, Beiping!

Yang Xu,

you only know your Beiping,

without even asking my opinion.

You scared half my life out of me just now.

I thought you were joking before,

I didn't expect it to be really that dangerous.

I'm not criticizing you, but you're a grown man.

Among the three of us, you're the oldest.

How can you be so timid? Are you even a man?

What's wrong? I'm not a man.

I'm a friend to women.

I'm telling you, I'm not going.

I'm going back to Yanggu County.

What's wrong? Want to fight?

What about the business if you leave?

I've already helped you make connections.

You can handle it yourself too.

You!

Two brothers,

please don't get angry because of me.

Don't flatter yourself, it's not about you.

Ji, it's not about you.

It's him being afraid of death.

I am just afraid of dying.

If you're not afraid of death, why did you block it just now?

Alright, I won't argue with you for now.

I'll give in to you, let's reconcile now.

I actually have an idea now.

This time the assassins failed to kill us,

they definitely won't let us go.

They will chase us to the ends of the earth.

But,

now that we have Brother Ji, why are we still running?

Let's return to Yanggu County.

While the mantis is catching the cicada, the oriole is waiting behind.

We'll round up these assassins.

Round them all up.

Round them all up.

Round them all up.

Round them all up.

[Yanggu County]

Let me see.

Why is it so expensive? I'm not buying it.

Well acted.

Trying to run?

Stop!

Stop! Don't run!

Stop!

Don't run!

Don't you run!

Don't run!

Stop! Don't run!

Keep running!

Come here.

Buddy, you're really not playing by the rules.

Not following the usual script, huh?

Ji,

do we have a chance of beating them?

If you're all on my level,

we should have a seventy to eighty percent chance.

But you...

A true man knows when to yield and when to stand firm.

We should still...

Run!

After them!

Go!

Don't run!

Stop!

Stop!

Everyone gets one.

Don't rush, take your time.

- Everyone gets one. - Be careful.

- Here, this is for you. - Give me another one.

I brought a lot of steamed buns today.

Everyone will get one, eat slowly.

Here, this is for you.

Thank you.

Give me one, please.

- Thank you. - Those behind, keep up.

- This is for you. - Thank you.

Here, hide it well, don't let others snatch it away.

Hold it tight.

Xia, over here.

Don't run!

Stop!

Over there.

Hurry!

Don't run!

I've stripped him clean of all his silver.

That county magistrate specifically targets other men's wives.

Yes, he's always doing wicked things.

Someone should have dealt with him long ago.

Right.

It's time to teach them a lesson.

It's you.

How did you end up here again?

It's an emergency! Help me out!

You ruined my business.

I haven't settled accounts with you yet.

And you dare come to me for help?

How much was that business of yours?

I'll compensate you.

Thirty taels.

Are you taking advantage of my misfortune?

Fifty taels. Take it or leave it.

Deal.

Everyone, uncles and aunties, come over here!

Come and listen!

This poor soul...

The young master of the Chen family kidnapped his wife

and is trying to kill him.

Now,

my family has fallen on hard times.

I have no money now.

But should we poor people just be bullied?

Should our wives be kidnapped from us?

Is there no justice left?

Should the poor just be bullied

with wives being kidnapped away at will?

This is lawlessness!

How dare they come here to kidnap people!

I want to see

whether they have more people, or we do.

Right! Let's go over there! Exactly!

Here!

Over here!

Help!

Help!

Go!

Move!

It's them!

It's him!

It's not us!

It's not us! No!

Get them! It's them!

Wrong!

Don't hit us!

Hurry, let's go!

Stop!

Don't run!

The brat is here! Stop!

Stop! Don't run!

Stop!

Come back here!

Stop!

Stop!

Don't run! Stop!

Hey! Where are you taking me to?

Hey? What 'hey'?

I have a name. It's Xia Xun.

Xia Xun? Aren't you surnamed Yang?

Be careful!

Where are you going? Stop!

Pay up.

Stop staring at me.

This has absolutely nothing to do with me.

I was also dragged into this by that guy just now.

You should go settle accounts with him.

Your man has already left you alone.

Leaving you all by yourself.

Why not come with us

and have some fun?

Xia, you still haven't given me my money.

How is it?

How is it? Did we shake them off?

We shook them all off.

Then...

What about that young lady?

Fortunately, she was there.

Those people mistook her for me.

Right now,

she's still wandering around in that brothel alley.

You led her into such a dangerous place.

You... do you even know how to treat a lady with care?

What if something happens to her?

I'm worried too.

But you don't understand that young lady.

That young lady's mind is exceptionally sharp.

She always finds a way to get out unscathed.

You've only just met her,

and you already know her mind is sharp?

You know her.

It's the Shaobing Girl.

But even so, she's still in danger.

No, Ji, you can't blame me.

I was also doing it for us to get out unscathed,

to preserve our lives.

To preserve our lives,

Who are you?

What's the origin of those assassins?

Are you really just ordinary merchants?

Ji,

since we've decided to head north together,

then there are some things I no longer need to hide.

I didn't tell you before

for your own good.

Do you think I, Ji Gang,

am someone who fears death?

Fine, if you think I'm in the way,

then I'll just leave.

Ji,

that's not what I meant.

Don't misunderstand.

I consider you a friend.

Even if you have the greatest difficulties,

I will help you to the end.

Good.

Then let me reintroduce myself.

I am Yang Xu, from Qingzhou.

I serve in the Imperial Guards.

My lord,

a secret report just arrived.

My subordinates' action failed.

So many people couldn't even kill one man.

What a bunch of useless fools.

It's said he has two helpers.

One of them has formidable martial arts skills,

not inferior to us in the slightest.

I underestimated that guy before.

In such a short time,

he managed to find two death warriors willing to die for him.

Just two death warriors, right?

There's no one in the world the Imperial Guards can't kill.

Otherwise, let me take action personally this time.

Wait.

Meng Tian, tell me,

the reason he's always refused to submit to me,

what exactly is it?

Perhaps Bai Yixia promised him many benefits.

It might not be about benefits.

If he were greedy for wealth,

he would have followed Feng Xihui long ago,

working steadily.

Why go through so much trouble to free himself?

I don't understand.

If, as you say, my lord,

Xia Xun desires neither money nor power,

then why has he been so reluctant to declare his allegiance to you?

What we can offer him

is far more than what Bai Yixia can give.

That's because he's under Bai Yixia's control.

Only that makes sense.

Meng Tian,

start investigating from where Xia Xun appeared.

Don't overlook even the slightest detail.

Yes, I'll go handle it immediately.

I must have this man.

Boss, is there any mail for me?

Miss Xie.

I thought you weren't coming back.

I was just about to find someone

to move all your things out.

Let me ask one more time, boss, is there any mail for me?

What's the deal?

Could there be silver inside this letter?

Miss Xie,

are you staying in this room or not?

Several guests came today,

and they all liked your room.

Innkeeper,

I'm not staying. I'm going to Beiping.

You're going to Beiping? What for?

[South Gate]

[Beiping]

Come take a look!

Delicious nuts, only available here in Beiping City!

Don't miss out if you pass by!

Exclusive service, delivery to your door!

Miss, come have a taste,

try my nuts.

You'll regret it if you don't try them!

Thank you.

Boss,

I've tasted snacks from all over the land,

your flavor is truly excellent.

Sure.

Boss, let me ask you something.

Is there a Squire Xie in Beiping?

His mansion is nearby, right?

Just two streets over.

Young lady, do you know Squire Xie?

What? Doesn't it look like I do?

No.

It's right that it doesn't look like it.

How would I know Squire Xie?

I came to Beiping to visit relatives.

My relatives didn't specify the exact location.

They just said it's near the Xie family.

I thought so.

Looking at your attire, so dignified and simple,

it really doesn't seem like

you have any connection with that bandit Xie.

Bandit?

But I heard Squire Xie is a businessman,

extremely wealthy.

Although Squire Xie is extremely wealthy,

where did his business money come from?

Where did it come from?

You're not from around here, so you wouldn't know.

That Xie Chuanzhong,

he was originally just a shepherd boy.

But in recent years, he inexplicably became rich.

I've heard others say that

he discovered a

bandit den that had been wiped out,

and got a large amount of gold, silver, and jewels.

Some also say that

he found a large sum of money

left behind by a high-ranking official from the Northern Yuan dynasty.

If it weren't for this windfall,

with his shepherd boy background,

how could he have reached his current status?

Even if he's the richest in the area, it's hard for him to gain respect.

Exactly.

Every time he drinks with others,

he faces sarcasm and ridicule.

Boss,

where is the best silk shop in Beiping city?

There's a Rui Xiang Silk Shop right next door.

I don't know if it's the best,

but all the local prestigious families go there,

so it can't be bad.

Thank you, boss.

Please pack some nuts for me.

Alright, alright, waiter, hurry up!

Coming right up!

Crispy nuts.

Thank you.

Thanks, boss.

Take care, young lady, come back if you like them!

I can deliver them to your door.

[Xie's Mansion]

Master.

How many times have I told you?

Don't disturb me when I'm reviewing the accounts.

It's not that, Master, there's an important guest requesting to see you.

Esteemed guest.

In the entire city of Beiping,

who could be more esteemed than me?

Master, this esteemed guest claims to be

from the Chen Commandery Xie clan of the South.

The Chen Commandery Xie clan? [Xie Chuanzhong, Richman in Beiping]

Quickly!

Don't rush, Master.

Your panic will make people laugh.

How can I not be anxious?

The Chen Commandery Xie clan is a descendant of a renowned family in the South.

If I can establish a connection with her,

from now on,

I will never be laughed at again.

When I received the letter,

I thought it would take some time.

I never expected her to arrive so quickly.

Is this Miss Xie truly from the Xie clan?

Her arrival is so sudden.

Could there be any issues?

Not just anyone can impersonate a descendant of a renowned family.

Whether it's true or false, we'll know at a glance.

Is that alright, Madam?

Alright.

Madam!

Madam, please forgive me for not welcoming you properly.

Squire Xie.

Madam, just call me Chuanzhong.

I dare not be called Squire.

Madam, please take a seat.

Come.

Madam, you must be tired from the journey.

You all sit too, no need to be so formal.

My seniority is higher than yours,

but I am younger than you.

Squire Xie, there's no need to be so polite.

Madam, these rules cannot be abandoned.

Elders are elders.

For generations, we inherit the rain and dew; in passing down, we should uphold virtue.

You're of the same generation as my grandfather.

No matter how young, these rules cannot be messed up.

Then I accept your courtesy.

But before it is verified,

I will not easily acknowledge you.

So, Squire, there's no need to rush. Please sit first.

Madam, there can't be a mistake.

Since childhood,

my grandfather and my father told me this.

I am illiterate,

but I remember clearly:

I am a descendant of the Chen Commandery Xie clan.

My father told me that when I succeed in the future,

I must recognize my ancestors and return to the clan,

and never forget my ancestors.

Don't be anxious. Listen to me slowly.

To be honest, actually,

our Chen Commandery Xie clan, passed down to this day,

is no longer as glorious as it once was.

Although it has branched out and spread all over the world,

most have already established their own hall names.

Our branch of the family has been declining day by day.

Now even the ancestral hall is dilapidated.

By my generation, there are even fewer descendants.

Alright, let's not talk about it anymore.

Look, these gestures, this demeanor.

Squire Xie.

Madam.

If it can truly be proven that you are

a descendant of our Xie family,

strengthening the influence of our branch,

then that would naturally be a tremendous good fortune.

I traveled thousands of miles to come here,

so it wouldn't have been a wasted trip.

However, the things that need verification

I must still examine each one carefully

before I can confirm them.

Madam, please rest assured.

True gold fears no fire.

Whatever you need to investigate, just give the order.

I will prepare it immediately.

I'm a bit tired.

If there's anything, we can discuss it tomorrow.

Yes.

Madam, please rest first.

Your bedroom has been prepared long ago.

I came here in a bit of a hurry this time,

so I didn't prepare anything.

I'll go out for a stroll later,

and buy two bolts of silk for Madam Xie

as a meeting gift.

You are so thoughtful. How can we accept this?

That's right.

How can we let you spend money?

Attendants, prepare some banknotes.

Deliver them to Madam's room later.

Yes.

Madam, whatever you wish to buy, please do.

Consider it me fulfilling my filial duty.

That's fine too.

Madam, this way, please.

Madam, take care.

Just now, I was so scared that I didn't even dare to breathe heavily.

After all, she's a figure from a great aristocratic family.

No matter how I try to learn, I can't match it.

Exactly. She's just a young girl,

sitting there as if she were the master,

and we became the guests.

In my life,

the first half was poor, looked down upon by fellow villagers.

Now that I'm wealthy, I'm looked down upon by the nobility.

Attending banquets, drinking wine,

it's always filled with veiled sarcasm and mockery.

Every time, I come back filled with anger.

Now it's good.

Recognizing the Chenjun Xie clan as ancestors,

I'll see,

who will still laugh at my lowly origins?

Who is lowly?

My ancestors were far more capable than yours!

But, Master...

I've heard these old aristocratic families are particularly strict about etiquette.

Even if they were to starve to death in poverty,

they'd still put on the airs of an aristocratic family.

They refuse to associate

with common folk like us.

Do you think she'll truly acknowledge us as relatives?

Don't worry. You saw it too.

Although this Miss Xie dresses elegantly and appropriately,

she's ultimately not as well-off as us.

It seems the old Xie family

only has the name of an aristocratic family left.

As long as she lets me be recognized by my ancestors and entered into the clan register,

I'll donate money to repair the ancestral hall and serve them well.

I, Xie Chuanzhong, lack many things but money.

If she acknowledges me,

she gains fame and profit, and I gain profit and fame.

Why wouldn't she agree?

Yes, Master, you're absolutely right.

Is it really okay to leave Ji Gang at the inn like this?

It doesn't seem right.

Ji was never really interested

in our business dealings anyway.

It's better to leave him behind

to watch over the account books for us.

That way we can be at ease.

Right?

That's true.

By the way, Ximen,

what exactly is the background of the contact person

you mentioned this time?

Well,

originally, this was a connection I built up myself,

and I wanted to keep it confidential.

But...

never mind.

Since I consider you my own brother,

I naturally shouldn't treat you as an outsider.

This key person

is the foremost fur trader in Beiping.

Secretly, he's the top figure in Beiping for transporting goods between the north and south,

sharing the spoils on the spot.

As for how wealthy he is,

you'll see for yourself in a moment.

Good.

The women of Beiping

really have a unique charm.

Wait for me.

You two wait here.

Yes.

Excuse me, boss,

please pick two more rolls of fine silk.

I'll buy them together.

Miss, you're straightforward.

Please have a seat.

Our Rui Xiang's silk,

is truly unmatched in Beiping.

Please wait a moment.

Here is your jade pendant.

I'll go select the silk for you now.

Miss, to be honest with you,

our silk shop

never extends credit to outsiders.

That day, seeing you

bringing a jade pendant to exchange for our silk,

somehow I agreed.

Perhaps it was because you looked kind.

Little did I expect

that you truly keeps your word,

settling the debt so quickly.

Was it my kindness or the jade pendant's kindness?

Given the quality of my jade pendant,

it could easily buy your entire shop.

You're joking.

How about this silk?

Does it catch your eye?

This is brocade with colorful weaving.

It looks quite good. I'll take this.

Excellent. I'll wrap it up for you right away.

♫ Galloping on horseback, whipping the reins, vying for rivers and mountains ♫

♫ Unaware that heroic passion cannot contend with separation ♫

Take care, esteemed guest.

♫ Removing armor, wearing fine clothes ♫

♫ Under the dim yellow lamplight, one sighs alone ♫

♫ Lofty ambitions ultimately cannot swallow this loneliness ♫

♫ Willing to use all the courage and loyalty ♫

♫ Holding up a paper umbrella ♫

♫ Shield you from wind, rain, and worries ♫

Madam, you've returned.

Just in time, there are guests visiting.

Master is waiting for you to start the meal.

Guests?

Yes.

Two wealthy merchants from afar.

Who are they, so important?

Go ahead and inform Squire Xie that I will freshen up a bit,

and rest for a moment before coming over.

Yes, Madam.

It's been years since I wore such luxurious clothes,

and I'm already unaccustomed to them.

How long has it been since I stayed in such a bedroom?

Now, even a single piece of clothing

must be bought on credit.

I have long heard of Squire Xie's great reputation.

Today, I am fortunate to visit your esteemed home. It is truly an honor.

I‘m flattered.

♫ Evening lanterns glow, frost upon the moon ♫

♫ Candlelight flickers red where only few stars gleam ♫

♫ In her tower she sings, dreaming of home ♫

♫ Through wind and night rain, her gaze begins to roam ♫

♫ Sorrow under moonlight, endless are the nights ♫

♫ Dreaming of moments lost from sight ♫

♫ A rising sandstorm veils your face from view ♫

♫ Now worlds apart, with no path back to you ♫

♫ Love and hate, awake then gone like sand ♫

♫ We meet, forget, through lifetimes' shifting strand ♫

♫ Right or wrong, the song ends, but feelings stay ♫

♫ Two worlds apart, too far to see the way ♫

♫ Who knows her silent love, who knows her tears? ♫

♫ Who knows her heart, and whom it truly fears? ♫

♫ Who knows her tender thoughts, her hidden grief? ♫

♫ A beauty's fleeting dream for whom does life seem brief? ♫

♫ I'd give my all, through all the joy and pain, and never complain ♫
