at Hawaii, Coach Dre.

He was like, look,
man, uh, I really like you.

It sucks that you can't
give your scholarship

just because of your or
just because of your film.

So I want you to come out here,
walk on, and springtime, just come bust

your ass, and we'll see if you get
that scholarship, if you earned it or not.

So once I landed in Hawaii, that same
day I found out that the head coach,

he had a job at Wazoo.

So I was like, oh.

I was scared.

Didn't know what to do.

But I talked to Coach Rob, my
mom, and talked to the coaches.

So I decided to stick it out,
see how it was going to be.

It was pretty decent at first, and then
the whole lockdown situation happened.

So it's been kind of hard
to really show my skills.

Nothing's ever easy.

Oh my gosh.

Story of my life, man.

Nothing's ever been easy.

Well, like you said, you got
your own room now, right?

It's just a different feeling from sleeping
in your car to really being on the bed.

Free range, free to move
around, stuff like that.

It was crazy.

I laid down, thought
about it real quick,

and cried because
this is what I worked for.

But I'm not finished, though.

This is just the beginning.

Is it a better situation now than if
you would have stayed in the Bay Area?

I would have stayed in the Bay.

I think I still would
have been in my car.

I'm not going to lie.

I think I still would

I wouldn't have the opportunities
I had if I didn't go to Hawaii.

So you never know
what's going to open up.

But you got to
keep battling, right?

You got to keep grinding, okay?

style on how they want to recruit.

You know what I'm saying?

And Ramos' little touch, little cherry on
top of the recruiting Sunday, if you will,

is when he brings the recruits
around, he'll get their lockers ready,

visualize what it's
going to be like at Laney.

I think we had Christian, 58,
we had Dior for sure, number four.

You know, Dior Walker.

So, it's kind of hard.

There's a lot of turnover.

We really have to
stay on it with recruiting.

Right now we're getting
out, trying to get to

every high school, and
we're creating our top list.

Well, we've already actually had them
created, but kind of going back through

it, see who has signed,
and who's still available.

These are just some of the guys, you
know, I've coached from the NFL, C.J.

Anderson, Chuck Jacobs,
Sterling Moore, Frank Summers,

and I've got more from my
Skyline days that are inside.

I mean, the end goal, everybody
wants to play in the NFL, I get that.

Let the NFL be the plan B.

There are certain things that are going to
happen and we're going to be a team that,

you know, that I feel proud
of, everybody feels proud of.

We're going to do all
the little things right.

Go!

We've got to find
better players.

So we're cutting the losses now.

Weeding guys out now.

Land on both feet and over.

It pisses you off when you lose.

Shit.

I mean, there's
no doubt about it.

That's my job.

To push us over the hill.

The hump.

Get us to the top.

And we've struggled
this year on that.

We can blame all the
things we want to blame,

but ultimately, I've
got to look in the mirror.

That's me.

I've got to do a better job.

And that's what I'll do.

We're going to be a better
team than we were last year.

That era's over.

It's time to be now at Laney.

Football is always going to
eventually come to an end.

It's not going to last forever.

But I mean, I never had a
doubt in my mind that I was going

to get out of junior college
and that's just how I came in.

I think about that all the time.

It's just, some
people are special.

At first, I just wanted
to play football.

But now, we're all about family.

We're all about family.

I just wish to be there
through everything.

In life, you shouldn't be doing
anything for anybody else but you.

Go follow your heart.

I was alone.

No one believed in me.

I didn't have any money.

I'd rather be broke and
chasing my dreams than be

doing something I hate
for the rest of my life.

Football has shown me
what type of person I am.

But the type of
hardships I can deal with.

I felt weak.

Now that I feel strong
and I got pride it's like

I'm not going to let
nobody break that down.

This city produces
unbelievable people.

Kids in Oakland are competitive.

These kids are resilient.

They have a dream.

You know, they have a hope and
an opportunity to what they want.

And that's what I
love about them.

That's why I'll
keep doing this job.
