- [Narrator] There are many
tales and legends

that live in this jungle.

(elephant trumpets)

- Some are pure fancy,

while others that sound like the
work

of an overactive imagination are
true.

My name is John Geller.

I'm an archeologist

and I'm here to tell you one of
those stories.

One that sounds so fantastic

that it could not possibly be
true.

But I assure you it is because I
was part of it.

The jungle is both beautiful and
terrible.

Not a place for children,

but it is a child that I wish to
tell you about,

a young boy.

It was about 10 years ago when
it all began.

This is Prema and beside her is
her son, Suresh.

Tonight, the people are giving
thanks to the jungle.

It is known as the night of
Deva.

Oh, and that fat man is Singh.

A man who does not deserve to be
called prince, or raja,

as they are called in India.

(Singh speak in foreign
language)

- Tonight is the night of Deva,

protector of our forest and
watcher over our town.

I wish you joy and happiness.

(crowd applauding)

Enjoy the night.

(crowd cheering)

- [Narrator] A wholly despicable
man, but enough.

Our story is just beginning

and there is much that you do
not know.

Now is not the time to listen to
long-winded men like me.

Now's the time to let the story
be told.

(upbeat music)

- Mama.

- Suresh, pay attention to the
dances.

- But I want to play.

- Okay, but quietly.

Hm? Go.

And don't stray too far, okay?

(monkey vocalizing)

- Come back, monkey. Come back.

Monkey, come back!

(leopard growling)

(monkey vocalizing)

(elephant trumpets)

(crowd cheering)

(Prema gasps)

- [Man] What's the matter?

- My baby boy.

I think he has gone into the
jungle.

- [Man] You must wait until the
morning.

- [Prema] No.

(elephant grunts)

- You're safe with us, Manling.

- Oh, you can talk?

- Yes.

Let me take you for a ride.

Sit on my trunk.

- [Narrator] Legend has it that
Deva,

the protector of the jungle,

the kindly spirit who all the
people of the village

were worshiping that night, was
watching over the boy.

Deva knew that he was pure of
heart

and so gave him the gift to
understand animal talk.

Deva was there throughout the
boy's journey

and knew that he would see
things

that no human had ever witnessed
before.

- [Suresh] I wanna go home.

- All in good time.

First, I must speak to the
family of animals.

(elephant grunts)

(elephant trumpets)

Brothers and sisters of the
jungle, it is I, Bono,

the keeper of the jungle law who
calls out to you.

Tonight, Sabre the leopard has
broken the law

and hunted on the night of Deva.

Find him and send him to me at
once at my home.

What do they call you?

- Suresh.

- We'll call you Manling.

- Welcome to our family,
Manling.

(Sabre growls) (Suresh gasps)

- Oh, no.

- I broke no law!

- [Bono] Not even man can be
hunted on the night of Deva.

- Give me the Manling.

- [Bono] No, he will stay here

till he is able to defend
himself.

So I have spoken. (Sabre roars)

So it shall be.

- I will go as you command,

but I will lick his bones clean
one day, Bono.

I promise.

- [Narrator] Suresh, or as he is
known to one and all,

the Manling, was accepted as one
of the family of animals.

He learned to fly through the
trees like a monkey

and fight with the skill of a
lion.

All the animals, as Bono deemed
it,

made Suresh their responsibility

and taught him the ways of the
Great Mother,

as the jungle is called among
animals.

Bono the great elephant became
Suresh's teacher,

and Mantoo the monkey became the
boy's best friend.

It was a perfect childhood
filled with fun and play.

- No, Bono. (water splashes)

- Bono!

- [Narrator] But like every
childhood,

it could not last forever.

And by the time he was a young
man,

a new chapter in his life was
about to begin.

- [Bono] You still have much to
learn, Manling.

- [Mantoo] Be easy on the boy,
Bono.

He only has two legs.

(Mantoo chuckles)

(door creaks)

- [Mr. Hook] So why did you call
me?

- Because you have a reputation
for (belches)

for not being squeamish.

- Go on.

- Well, how about some wine?

- No.

- Yes, indeed.

You most definitely are the man
to help me.

No doubt you have noticed a lot
of archeological diggings

in and around our town.

- And the point is?

- Every day, they are unearthing

priceless artifacts, gems, gold.

It usually ends up rotting in
some old museum.

- Your ancestral pride touches
me, Raja.

- Thank you.

But there is one statue that
does belong to my family.

Lost many centuries ago.

It is said that this statue is
so laden with jewels

that it takes two full-grown men
just to carry it.

- I'm sure there's some dark and
mysterious power

that surrounds it, yes?

- Yes.

Well, no.

(Singh laughs)

- Come on, Singh, what's the
deal?

- Come.

Come with me.

You'll see there are some things

which we cannot really talk
about in front of the servants.

- Come on, Singh, don't try to
con a con.

- Me? Never.

Come, come with me, Mr. Hook.

Let's go somewhere where you and
I can talk heart to heart.

Just the two of us. Come.

- [Suresh] Bono, why are we
here?

- [Bono] Because this is where
it all began.

You have learned the ways

of the fighting stick well,
Manling.

- You have taught me well, Bono.

- Soon it will be time to test
your fighting skills.

Come.

- Come, come, Mr. Hook.

Come sit down, won't you?

Ask of me what you will.

- All right.

What about the law?

Doesn't the law protect all this
historical junk?

(Singh laughs)

- Don't worry about the law, Mr.
Hook.

For the most part, I am the law.

So tell me, do we have a deal?

- 50/50.

- Oh, well, you do drive a hard
bargain.

(fingers snapping) Sanjay, come!

- [Bono] We are in the Valley of
Death.

Few journey beyond these
boundaries

and return to tell the tale.

- [Suresh] Then let's turn back.

- [Mantoo] We cannot.

We have a destination to reach.

(Sanjay speaking in foreign
language)

- Mr. Hook, this is Sanjay.

He is one among my most trusted
servants.

He will be your guide.

- It's a pleasure, sahib

- Yeah. Right.

I'm sure we'll get along like a
house on fire.

- A house on fire? Where?

- It's just a saying.

- Oh.

- Sanjay, take Mr. Hook to the
abandoned coconut plantation

where the jungle meets my land.

- As you wish, my raja.

- And if anyone questions you
about Mr. Hook,

tell them he is my new game
warden.

(Mr. Hook chuckles)

- Yes, my raja.

- We are going to be rich before
you know it.

- I'm counting on it, Mr. Hook.

(Mr. Hook laughs)

- [Bono] We must make our way
through the bamboo jungle.

That is where we will find the
Mark of Naga

and the Lagoon of Life.

- [Narrator] Just as the jungle
boy had his mission

and Hook and the raja had
theirs, I also had mine.

My niece Anna was arriving from
America,

and as usual, I was late.

- Professor Geller?

Are you not going to pick up
your niece Anna in Bangalore?

- Yes, I am, Ravi.

- Then should you not hurry?

- Yes, I should, Ravi.

- Professor Geller,

I have found a most interesting
treasure.

I negotiated a wonderful deal,
sir,

and I'm willing to sell it to
you at a great bargain.

- I'll be back soon.

(keys rattling)

Shouldn't you be sweeping, Ravi?

- Oh, yes, sir. Most excellent
sweeping.

(car door thuds) (engine
whirring)

(Ravi sighs)

(gentle music)

- [Suresh] Is this the Mark of
Naga?

- [Bono] Yes, Naga.

- Can we explore it?

- Promise me you will never go
past this point.

Naga the great protector is
wise, but he is without mercy.

- I promise.

- There is another reason we
have asked you here.

- What is it?

- Tomorrow is your day of
passage, Manling.

You will be hunted.

- Hunted?

Who will hunt me?

- Sabre the leopard has laid
claim to that honor.

- I don't know if I'm ready for
the test.

- You must be ready.

Now, come and prepare for the
challenge.

There is little time to waste.

- [Narrator] No one but Deva
knew that this day would mark

a turning point for all of us.

Hook, myself, Anna, and the
jungle boy

were destined by Deva to meet.

Our paths were about to cross,

and from that point on, we were
to be linked forever.

- I think I'm onto something
this time.

So how's my brother?

- Dad's great.

- [John] And your mom?

- She sends her love.

She told me to tell you not to
forget to eat.

She says you're too skinny

and she's ordered me to fatten
you up.

(John laughs)

- Well, if your cooking's as
good as your mom's,

I should be as plump as a
Christmas goose

by the time you go back to
school.

(gentle music)

- So do you really think you're
closer

to finding Kipling's famed Lost
City?

- Everything Kipling described
is right here.

The town on the edge of the
jungle, the palace,

the abandoned coconut
plantation, it's all here.

Everything we've uncovered.

The relics, the artifacts,
everything.

All point to a major settlement

that was once somewhere in this
jungle.

- [Anna] Now, the Lost City of
Naga, fact or fiction?

- [John] Fact.

I'm betting dollars to donuts
the city existed

and it's just waiting to be
found.

The secrets we learn from the
civilization

that flourished here could-

- Watch out!

- [Mr. Hook] Look!

(Sanjay speaking in foreign

of a man with a loaded gun.

I'm the game warden for the Raja
Singh

who owns most of this land, and
that boy is a poacher.

the direction you saw him,

I'll be on my way.

for the Indian Ministry of
Archeology.

- Ah, relics.

- Very strange.

Now, you must journey on your

- May the Great Mother protect

- [Anna] Uncle John, who do you
think he was?

- Well, there's a story in these
parts about a young boy,

a baby, lured into the jungle.

Some people say he was eaten by
a leopard,

but no remains were ever found.

- What do you think happened?

- I'm not sure.

Periodically, hunters have
reported catching glimpse

of a young man in the jungle
running with the animals,

climbing trees with the skill of
a monkey.

- [Anna] What about the parents?

- The mother was a single
parent.

She passed away, supposedly of a
broken heart.

(gentle music)

- Remember all that you have
been taught, Manling.

Sabre is a dangerous foe.

Use your fighting stick as he
would his claws.

(stick clacking)

Go to the Valley of Death.

My heart is with you.

(Sabre growling)

- [Suresh] I am here, Sabre.

- [Sabre] I know, Manling.

I've been watching and waiting.

(Sabre growling)

Today, I hunt you.

If you survive, you become one
of the family

as Bono has decreed.

- And if I don't?!

- [Sabre] Then I shall sleep
with a full belly

and you upon my breath.

- Show yourself, Sabre!

- [Sabre] All in good time,
Manling.

But first, a question.

Where's the best place to watch
the hunted?

- [Suresh] From above.

(Sabre growling)

(Suresh grunting)

(stick cracks)

- [Sabre] You've lost your
claws, Manling.

Pity.

Run, Manling.

The hunt is on!

I'm right behind you.

Can you feel my breath on you,
feel my claws?

(Sabre growling)

- [Sabre] Why do you run out of
the jungle, Manling?

Are you returning to the man
pack?

(Sabre growls)

(Suresh grunts)

(people chattering)

- Hello, Miss Geller.

(Sabre growling)

You know, I never did find that
poacher.

- Once you have evaded me, but
not this time.

(Sabre growling)

(Suresh growling)

(Sabre growling)

(Suresh growling) (Sabre
growling)

- The red fire.

It is against our laws.

- Don't talk to me of laws,
Sabre!

Now, I hunt you!

(Sabre growling)

(people chattering)

- Professor Geller.

How is Anna?

- She's resting.

She'll be okay.

- Professor Geller, they say the
boy that chased the leopard

from the village is a jungle
devil.

He can talk to animals, sir.

Only a devil can talk to
animals.

- Ravi, I don't know what that
boy is, but he's no devil.

- No, no, Professor Geller, he
must be,

otherwise the leopard would have
killed him.

- Ravi, everything has a
scientific explanation.

One just has to look hard
enough.

- Sometimes, Professor Geller,

people can try as hard as they
like

and yet not see what's right in
front of their eyes.

(crickets chirping)

- [Suresh] Bono, I have defeated
Sabre.

- Tell us how, Manling.

- His fighting stick broke, so
he used the red fire.

- The red fire?

- [Bono] Is this true, Manling?

- Yes.

- By using the ways of man,

you have broken our law and you
must now pay the penalty.

- Bono, you're my family.

You are all that I have.

I never meant it to be like
this.

- As much as it pains me to say
this,

you must leave the jungle
forever, Manling.

- He's no Manling, he's one of
us.

Let him stay.

- [Bono] And tomorrow when the
sun rises, you must go.

(gentle tinkling)

- What is wrong, boy?

My name is Deva.

What is your name?

- I'm called Manling.

- That's what you are, it's not
who you are.

I'll call you Krishna.

What is wrong, Krishna?

- Bono has banished me.

- Bono had a very hard thing to
do.

He had no choice.

- Where will I go?

- You know.

- The town?

- It's a good thing.

- But I don't know anything
about life in the town.

- You'll learn.

- How?

- How do monkeys learn?

- Monkey see, monkey do.

- Go to the town and be a monkey
amongst men.

(gentle tinkling)

- [Ravi] Hey, Sanjay!

Oh, Sanjay.

- [Sanjay] How are you?

- I'm all right.

- Mr. Hook, I'll introduce you,
my cousin Ravi.

- Hello, sir.

It's a pleasure to meet you.

- Yeah. Right.

Sanjay tells me you work for
Professor Geller.

- Yes, sir.

But I'm also available for other
employment.

- Good.

(Joshua chuckles)

- Also tells me you deal in a
few

not so authentic artifacts now
and then.

- Well, sir, you can't always
tell.

- I can always tell, Sanjay.

Ravi, come here.

What I'm most interested in

is the professor's archeological
work.

Now, perhaps you can keep me
informed

of what he's discovered?

Just between you, me, and
Sanjay.

- All right, sir.

- Why don't you two meet up here
at the teahouse

every couple of days and have a
little chat?

You understand?

- Oh, I understand, sir.

(Ravi chuckles)

(gentle music)

- [Narrator] Krishna obeyed
Bono's command

and left his jungle home.

Scared and alone, he began a new
chapter of his life.

He didn't know what would happen
to him, but Deva did.

Deva saw to it that Krishna
would be taken into a new home,

my home, that lay at the edge of
the jungle.

His eyes were about to be opened

to the ways of the man pack.

(footsteps clattering)

- Come on.

Come on.

My name is Anna.

Anna.

Go ahead.

It's okay.

Go.

(television chattering)

- [Ravi] Professor Geller?

- Oh, my goodness.

This is...

- It's okay.

- It's all right. It's okay.

- I don't think he speaks
English.

- Welcome.

(John chuckles)

- Ravi.

- I've got an idea, sir.

- Television.

- [John] That's your idea?

- It's ice cream. You eat it.

Like this.

Mm.

It's good.

(all chuckling)

- I guess he needs a place to
sleep.

Why doesn't he bunk out here on
the couch?

Ravi, get some pillows and a
blanket.

- Okay, sir.

(Anna mimics snoring)

- [Narrator] So Krishna came
under the care of Anna and me.

Sabre left the jungle and was
never heard from again.

And Krishna followed Deva's
advice,

and like the monkey, he saw and
did.

Krishna learned quickly, or
rather we learned,

because much of what Anna showed
him, he had known as a boy.

It just lay sleeping in his
head.

With Anna, myself, and Ravi's
guidance,

it didn't take much time to wake
it up.

- Krishna, you.

- Krishna.

That's me. - That's you.

- Krishna.

to the leopard in the market.

He wants to be sure what he saw
was really true.

- Oh, yes.

The young sir can talk to
animals.

All the people in the market saw
him.

You know what?

They think he's the jungle
devil,

but Professor Geller says that-

- Please. - No, no, wait, wait,
listen.

- Please, we don't have much
time.

Mr. Hook wants to be sure that
he can talk to the animals,

so he has a plan that involves
you.

- I wish I didn't have to send
the Manling away.

- Yes, it was a very hard thing
to do.

Tomorrow, I will go see him.

- [Bono] Good.

I'm in big trouble, sir.

This horse of my brother's is
most unreasonable,

and I'm concerned it will cause
damage, young sir.

It might hurt somebody. Ooh!

- Maybe we should ask Mr. Geller

(man speaking in foreign

(snake hissing)

We must talk, young sir,

but first, you must calm this
horse and speak to it.

Get it to settle down. (horse
whinnying)

(people chattering)

- My hoof hurts.

- Don't worry, I'll get him to
fix it.

He says there's something wrong
with his hoof.

- I told you he could talk to
the animals.

- Do you think the boy can lead
us to the statue?

- If it's hid in the jungle, the
animals would know where.

This boy could take us there.

- It's time monkey boy and I had
a little talk.

- Uncle John, have you seen
Krishna?

- I saw him heading toward the
market with Ravi.

- Okay, well, I'm gonna go find
him.

(Joshua laughs)

That is a symbol of eternal
friendship,

and I want you to have it.

- Now, I have to give you

but I don't have anything to

- Oh, that's a problem.

wanted to see?

I've always wanted to see some
secret, ancient, hidden ruins

that no one's ever seen before.

- Oh. No, they've been seen.

I've seen them.

- Yes.

Bono showed me where the Sacred
Jungle is.

- Really?

- It's true.

- You and I could go there
sometime if you'd like.

Oh, look, there's Anna.

- [Anna] What did they want?

- He wanted to be friends.

He gave me this.

- Krishna, I want you to stay
away from that man.

I don't trust him.

Think we better talk to my
uncle.

Come on, let's go.

- Man is a very confusing
animal.

I don't understand his ways.

- Sometimes, I don't either,
Krishna.

- [Suresh] Think I need some
time alone to think.

- [Narrator] After that, many
people became

weary of Krishna.

(tires screeching) (horn
honking)

They feared him and believed him
to be a jungle devil.

Only Anna and myself remained
his true friends,

while others, like Hook, tried
to set a trap to ensnare him.

(Mantoo screeching)

- Mantoo!

Mantoo, come here!

Come here, Mantoo.

I've missed you.

Come here.

- Oh, they never should have
made you go.

- I didn't want to go either.

- [John] Krishna!

- You'd better go, Mantoo.

I'll see you soon.

- [John] Krishna!

I want you to tell me exactly

what Mr. Hook said to you at the

him.

- I'm beginning to tire of your
demands, Professor.

- Bono.

(Bono grunting)

- The Mark of Naga.

- Mark of Naga.

He's the protector of the
jungle.

Bono says he's wise without
mercy.

- The Mark of Naga?

Where have you seen this?

- In the jungle.

No one may go past the mark.

- This map was given to me by an
old man,

by an old man who said that
Kipling used it

to find the Lost City in the
jungle that he wrote about.

- But it's Sacred Jungle.

We're forbidden to go there.

Professor?

- There's a legend, an old
legend,

about the birth of language,
like the Tower of Babel.

Statue of Naga.

- Statue of Naga?

- Yes.

The legend is that the Statue of
Naga,

when the proper prayer is said,

will grant the pure of heart the
ability to speak
