I loved Christmas as a kid

because it was always such
a special time in our house.

I come from
a deeply religious family,

um, which can
have its downsides.

It's to say Christmas and Easter
is the same in our family.

You know, most people
would go to Easter Mass

on Good Friday or Easter Sunday.

We went Holy Thursday,
Good Friday,

Easter Saturday,
and Easter Sunday.

But it's only as I got older,
and, you know,

you hear of the Christmas films
that everybody talks about

and everybody has seen that
I realized that we never saw

those films because
we were always at mass.

So we've never seen, like,

the must-see Christmas films.

I've never seen Willy Wonka
and the Chocolate Factory.

My marriage ended,
so since 2019,

I've been a stay-at-home
single parent with three kids.

Christmas is cancelled?

It's because I told Santa
I was good and he died laughing.

I remember I was
at mass one Christmas Eve,

and the priest took a new take

on the story of the holy family.

God became a builder.

The Blessed Virgin Mary
was the builder's daughter.

When I was a child,

everyone would walk to
the church two miles away

for midnight mass.

Midnight mass would have been
two hours.

actually got toys,

and I remember being in the
cloakroom with a few other girls

back at school
after Christmas, and...

we were kind of making up

going to say we got.

it can be hit and miss.

with the eating disorder,

'cause your parents are older.
They didn't know.

They brought a doctor out to me,
and he was probably in his 70s.

He just said, "I think you
need to eat more potatoes."

Now, I'm 48.

This was when I was 13.

I haven't eaten a potato since.

So you can imagine
what Christmas is like.

When you have to sit down
and have a big dinner,

starters and dessert, and then
not move for the rest of the day

sitting on the couch
watching Mrs. Brown's Boys,

eating a box of Roses.

That's just my worst nightmare.

I was left really stuck.

The electricity company

350 euros out of my account,

and I was left with 17 euros,

and that was supposed to put
petrol in my car

and feed my kids for a week.

I ended up having to
go to the food bank

to get food for
my kids for the week.

They were going swimming
with school the next day,

and they needed 12 euros.

And I didn't even have
the 12 euros to give

so that they could go swimming.

And you feel like
such a failure.

I can't afford to give
them parties this year.

I don't know how I'm going
to get through Christmas.

a very, very busy day,

from probably 5:00 a.m.

I can actually
get the last few bits ready

for prepping for
school the next day.

the kids into that one.

isn't Christmas,

I don't know why Daddy
should work over Christmas.

She sadly passed away
at two minutes to 4:00

on the 17th of February.

the way they miss Roxy so much.

I know and they know

that they'll never feel
that hug from Mammy again.

but Christmas
was everything to her.

we all got a selection box.

And my dad, in his 80s,
out in the garden putting lights

around the trees in the garden.

It's the little things
like that you miss

because now
you're the older person

and because I don't have kids,

I can't pass that on,

I made that decision
a long time ago, so I have

to kind of make peace with it.

it's about kids.

they're trying. It just happens.

It's just automatic,
and that's special.

Especially at Christmas.

been practicing for so long.
