It was the way things had
always been, tradition,

but I refused to accept it.

When I was five years old,
I had stood by helplessly

and watched my mother die in a plague.

From that moment on, I'd
wanted to be a doctor.

Everyone told me there was no chance,

no one could rise above
his station in life.

And the few doctors we had were

the most highly-respected
men in the ghetto."
