In 1944, Richard Rodgers and
Oscar Hammerstein were just

coming off of their triumph with
"Oklahoma." Faced with the

challenge of topping that
success, they decided they

wouldn't even try. Instead, they
took the brooding Hungarian play

"Liliom," transferred the
setting to a remote New England

fishing village, and composed
some of the most glorious music

ever written for the stage
around themes of brutality,

poverty, and disappointment.

Sound operatic? Well, Puccini
had tried and failed to get

permission to adapt the same
play into an opera. "Carousel"

remains one of the most beloved
and influential musicals of all

time. In 1994, as a recent
Julliard graduate, I had the

honor of playing Carrie
Pipperidge in the Lincoln Center

Theater production, and tonight
a new generation gets to hear

this masterpiece performed by
the New York Philharmonic and

some of the brightest stars from
the worlds of musical theater

and opera. I'm Audra McDonald,
and this is "Carousel."

C'mon, Julie!
