his son, Juan Pablo, changed
his name to Sebastian Marroquin,

and moved to Buenos Aires

After 12 years of living in exile,

this is the first time Sebastian
and his mother

Maria Isabel Santos
have decided to break their silence

and share their personal files.

This is my father
when he took his first Holy Communion.

l cherish this picture very much.

For me, it's like my company at night.
It sleeps with me.

Nobody would be able
to recognize the boy in the picture.

And I'd be able to show it
to all my friends here

or anybody l knew .

It was like the only moment of honesty
l could share with my friends

when l showed them
the picture of my father ,

and the only moment l didn't fear
my identitywas discovered.

l don't evertell anybody
who my father was.

If they find out or ask me, we talk.

If they don't..

I'm nobody.

My father was considered
to be somebody

for his temerity,
for his fame, whatever.

He was the best at cheating.

The deception started right now.

If we planned
to play Monopoly at night,

he started cheating hours earlier.

He went or sent someone
to the game box to take bills.

He spread them around.

He knew were he would sit
at night in the living room,

so he'd put bills under the carpet,
the coffee table,

under the sofa where he'd sit,
next to him...

Of course hours later, we sat down
and opened the box for the first time.

We handed out the bills and stuff
according to the rules of the game

Everything was neat

This man had terrible luck,
but he was always loaded with money.

I've learned a lot of things
from my father , a lot of nice things.

The most important one
is that if l want to live,

l have to do the opposite of him.

That was my lesson.

If l wanted to be dead,
and l would be already,

l wouId've followed his lead.

Sebastian was only 16 years old
when in December, 1993,

his father was killed in Medellin,

the city that had seen him grow up
and become powerful.

A female reporter
broke the news to Sebastian.

- Hello.
- Hello. Don't bug us now.

We're watching TV and think
the news about my dad is false

The police has just confirmed it.

He was at the Obelisco Mall,
in the center of Medellin.

What was he doing there?

I don't know. The police
have just given an official report.

What a fucking day.

We don't wanna talk right now.

I am going to kill all of those
sons of bitches who killed him.

I'm going to kill them myself.

Being part of this family,
l know that l, Pablo Escobar ,

have lost the right
to get angry forever.

l shouldn't have gotten angry as l did.

l shouldn't have lashed out as l did
the day my father died.

ln a violent situation like that,

any teenager could have reacted
the same way,

but l did, and being an Escobar ,
that caused a great impact.

If they do something mean to me,
l can't get angry .

''You are Pablo Escobar's son,
so you are dangerous.''

I'm not the right person to justify
my father's actions

And l think every time
l try to get involved,

that's exactly when l go wrong
and start believing

it is me who has to account for
my father's actions

It'd be really easy for us as relatives
to criticize Pablo Escobar , the person,

even more vigorously.

We'd befriend people more easily,
but that wouldn't be honest.

People cannot forbid us
to love my father .

They cannot deny we've had
an affectionate relationshipwith him,

an ordinary family relationship.

l think there's something
more important

than criticizing Pablo Escobar
so that people will like us.

l think we have to explore that story,

understand it from beginning to end,

and l think
we have to make society aware

so that it won't happen again.

NAPOLES ESTATE

He had an encyclopedia of wildlife

from where he'd choose the animals
he wanted to have at the estate.

We arrived at immense green areas
where they'd have certain species.

We looked at them,
and he chose the ones he wanted.

l remember he told me,
''My partner will kill me

when he finds out l spent
$2 million buying animals.''

There was a tremendous amount
of luxury at the estate.

We had everything.

There was nothing else
to spend the money on.

l think he was eager to spend money
for enjoyment, to amuse us.

But there came a time in life

when there were no more things
to be surprised about.

There was nothing else to buy.

He bought a macaw
for a million dollars

And l bought a painting
for a million pesos.

I'd say to him,
''Listen, art remains alive;

however, a macaw will die.''

Those were our arguments.

Those were my toys.

The little cars we used to compete with
down the house racetrack.

People think l was a spoiled rich kid,
and they are right.

l had everything.
l asked for something and got it.

That's how l was raised,
surrounded by excesses by luxury ...

in that incoherent world.

My father was at his peak
during my childhood.

Our visit to this unique place
has come to an end.

The philosophy behind
this fabulous estate

is based on the love for life.

It looks toward the future,

enhancing human quality,

preserving nature.

At that time,
cocaine was supposedly

the best thing
that could be happening to society .

It started to be considered
as something glamorous,

as something that had
to be followed like a fashion.

It was set.

But it was something global.

It didn't just happen
in Colombian society .

For my father , working
was the easiest thing in the world

because he'd travel
and stay in the best hotel in Miami.

He'd rent two or three whole floors.

He made up
the Fredonia Petroleum Company.

It was a fantasy name of a town

where there's
no petroleum in Colombia.

He worked normally there.

He met people
and did everything he wanted

from the best hotel in Miami
in plain sight.

It was obvious he met with notorious
American gangster

It was absurd
for them to believe the company story.

However, they went unnoticed.

He entered the country with money.
He entered and left.

He declared it as his.

He entered with $4 million once,

on another occasion
with $700,000.

Nobody said anything to him.

They'd say , ''Welcome to the U.S.,
Mr . Pablo Escobar .''

He went there, bought stuff,
and did his business...

legally; everything he did,
he did it using his name.

He didn't conceal his identity
to enter the U.S. with money

and buy property there.

Everybody dreams
of going to Disney.

The father became a child
in that park with Sebastian.

He went up in every roller coaster
even if he was scared to death of them

because he didn't like roller coasters.

But he did everything
he could to see Sebastian happy.

In the early '80s,
Escobar was at the top of the world.

He had the family
he had alwys dreamed of

and he was the boss
of the Medellin Cartel,

which controlled 80% of the world's
cocaine market.

Escobar was already
one of the richest men in Colombia.

He used part of his wealth
to help the less fortunate.

His charity work included the building
of dozens of football fields.

You plan to build 50 fields.

Yes, in every municipality,
because we want them all--

every neighborhood,
no matter how marginal they are--

to participate in and benefit

-But it's a very interesting name.

Those who know Robin Hood's story

know perfectly well that he fought for
and defended the poor.

His most ambitious project

was the construction
of hundreds of houses

destined for families who lived
in a municipal dumpster.

The complex, known as
Barrio Pablo Escobar, still exists.

There are more
than 5,000 people living here.

Ofcourse, we're very grateful
to our fellow Pablo Escobar Gaviria.

We believe we'll be very happy
as of March.

We'll be transferred
to La Milagrosa then,

and we'll feel very happy.

What else could a man
who had discovered a magic formula

to make money dedicate him self to?

How could he get more power

than the power money
was already giving him?

l think that's when he decided
to get involved in politics..

to get the power from the masses.

Today, we're the new political force
of the department.

We're the liberal hope
of the Antioquian people.

Escobar had even bigger plans.

He wanted political power.

That's why he decided to support
the recently formed party

New Liberalism,
funded by LUis Carlos Galan

and Rodrigo Lara Bonilla.

Soon after Sebastian agreed
to bepart of this project,

we traveled to Bogota
to meet Rodrigo Lara.

Twenty-five years earlier,
his father had been

the first to publicly condemn Escobar

l never talk about my father in public.

It's very weird. l mean, l talk
about my father because l have to.

It takes a very special setting
for that to happen.

He used to say that they , Galan and he,
went to Middle Magdalena

He told me they didn't understand
why they received so much support,

why there were so many people
so eager to support them

when they'd never set foot
in those municipalities before.

They didn't understand why.

l told him that it was a great success,
the campaign had a great impact.

So they started asking people
who the political leader

that brought them there was.

''That's Pablo Escobar .
He tells us to vote for you.

Pablo's generous
He gives us fridges and money.''

They wondered
who this Mr . Pablo Escobar was.

They cared about him so much.

He told me he asked,
if l remember correctly,

to a Medellin broker and this and that,
and the three of them told him

that he was an extremly rich guy,
but also an extremly danger guy.

When they realized who he was,
they expelled him publicly.

He's left outside the movement.

For Pablo Escobar ,
that was humiliating.

l think from then on,
he started to feel deep hatred,

which led to what we all know
happened against New Liberalism.

Despite the expulsion from the party,

Escobar made use
of his fortune and popularity

to be elected in Congress.

l think at some point in his life,

he must have flirted with the idea
of becoming president of Colombia.

We went to Congress.

He would tell me
to get ready to be the First Lady.

He was sure he'd make it.

Soon after, Lara Bonilla
was appointed Minister of Justice

His determination
to fight drug trafficking

turned him into a threat to Escobar

The country should learn the truth
of certain powerful captains

who thought that the tax amnesty
meant forgetting the crimes

whose holders committed to make
their fantastic fortunes.

Up to that moment,
no one had ever reported them.

They turned into ordinary citizens..

who were in fashion.

Up to the clash between Rodrigo Lara
and my father ...

up to then,
my father ruled in Colombia.

He decided what to do
or not to do in that country .

I want to inform public opinion
that the Minister of Justice

has a 24-hour deadline
to submit the evidence

regarding the accusation
he made against me #

in the Chamber of Representatives

My father said that Pablo Escobar
was an important drug dealer,

and usually, drug dealers
always demand proof of that.

Can you assure us your money

has never been connected
to drug trafficking?

I have alwys confirmed
that my money

has nothing to do
with drug dealing.

How did you amass your money,
your immense amount of money?

In Antioquia, everbody knows
about my investments

in industry, cattle, and construction

They tried to kill him morally,
a common strategy of them,

to tarnish his reputation.

And they thought that way

they would calm him down
or blackmail him.

The Minister of Justice
made an unfair accusation against me

and I have filed a criminal complaint

because he has committed
the crime of slander,

which the Colombian Penal Code
punishes with 1-4 years in prison

We're dealing with a rise
in drug trafficking.

Today, these people seek
the expulsion of a cabinet member

because they find him inconvenient
for their evil deeds

Escobar's attemts to intimidate
Lara Bonilla were nsuccessful.

In March 1984, the minister
ordered the raid of Tranquilandia

the biggest cocaine lab ever found.

In a few hours,
Escobar and his partners

lost a dozen planes
and helicopters

and almoust 14 tons
of cocaine worth $1.2 billion

My father's pressure,
the accusations and the confrotation

forced Pablo Escobar
to resign from his seat in Congress.

Let's say he took Escobar's mask off.

l think that maybe after that,
he flew off the handle.

He went completely off the handle.
He totally lost control.

As far as l know ,
he got calls telling him,

''See, Minister, right now,
your sons Rodrigo, Jorge Pablo

''are getting out of school
and you're never gonna see them again.

Goodbye, Minister.''

I'll protect myself anyway.

Because I think they'll try
to get back at me anyway

for what I did
to put criminals in their place.

There were many important people
in the country who'd say to him,

''Don't fight against these guys.
They're going to kill you.''

The Minister of Justice
lied to the country

when he said he wouldn't step off.

We'll see what happens
in the next few days.

April 30, 1984,
just a month after Tranquilandia

hired assassins paid by Escobar
killed Rodrigo Lara Bonilla.

People still remember him and laugh.

Because he was a very nice man.

He had a great sense of humor.

He was a very good father .

He.. really enjoyed
spending time with his sons.

What made him get mixed up?

What made him take the decision
to spread the drug trafficking business

with blood... with Lara's death?

When my father died,
l was eight years old.

And the first feeling
that went through me

was avenging his death.

l remember listening to music
thinking of when I'd hold a gun

to avenge his death.

Right then, one could maybe imagine

what went through my father's mind

when Lara denounced him like he did.

Not even with all the money
and power in the world

would he be able
to take Lara'swords back.

From 1984,
the year Rodrigo's father died,

our lives changed forever.

How could he not tell
what was about to happen,

or what his family
was about to experience

and suffer due to his decisions?

Early in the morning,
we left for Panama.

l think Panama has always been
a cherished route for drug dealers.

ln the middle of the jungle,

the helicopter barely had
a gap to land in.

We stayed in a mansion
General Noriega had gotten my father .

It was next to a golf course
which you could access directly.

He had fled from Colombia,
a fugitive from justice.

However, very respectable politicians
in the country at the time

visited him to see how he'd negotiate
his return to Colombia.

A particular event continues
to attract the media's attention.

Colombia's ex-president Alfonco Lopez
visited Escobar in Panama

This originated
the rumor that Escobar

had offered to pay
Colombia's external debt

in exchange for amnesty
for his crimes

My father's offer to pay
Colombia's external debtwas a lie.

He never offered something like that.

l know because l asked him.

That's just part of the myth.
It wasn't true.

The story between my father
and Noriega ended badly

because, according to my father ,
Noriega stole a plane

and $3 million from him.

Escobar mistrusted his host,
General Noriega

He feared he would turn him in
to the United States

That's why he took his family
and went to Nicaragua

Sebastian was seven years old

You could say that my father
went from being protected by Noriega

to being protected
by the Sandinista government.

Nicaraguawas desolated.

It was a sad country ,
burdened with the war.

l spent the worst days
of my life in Nicaragua.

I'd cry.
The only thing l did was cry.

They called me to lunch and l cried.
They called me out to play and l cried.

They called me to play in the backyard
and l cried because l saw a huge wall.

We ran away from a violent place
to get to another violent country .

You could feel it in the air .

When l was seven years old,
my life was the life of a criminal.

l was suffering the same
as if l had ordered the murders.

Meanwhile
the U.S. was already after Escobar

A D.E.A. informant
took pictures of him

while loading a plane
with cocaine in Nicaragua

My father was a fugitive,
but he decided to return to Colombia

despite being chased.

He really feared being easily
extradited to another country .

l don't know if the government
wasn't prepared enough to go after him;

however, my father was very prepared
to avoid being caught.

- What's up?
- Maza Marquez sent

a commission of about 400 men
here in Medellin.

Yeah.

Every time they went looking for him,

the first one who knew
where they were heading was Pablo.

- The pilots should let us know.
- They'll tell us immediately.

Okay, then. Bye.

And my father walked freely
around the city with 30 or 40 guards.

That moment of joy and tranquility
didn't last long

because the war period
with the Cali Cartel started.

Back then,
Escobar and the Medellin Cartel

faced a harsh competitor.

A second cartel with its headquarters
in the city of Cali

started to fight
for cocaine market control.

In 1988, the rising rivalry between
the two cartels turned into a war

after the detonation of a car bomb

in front of the building
where Escobar's family lived.

I'm Pablo's brother.

Pablo is very offended
because they are harassing his family.

Don't mess with his family

because whoever does that,
whoever dares to do that

will be in trouble, brother.

Apart from the Cali Cartel,
Escobar had another powerful enemy,

LUis Carlos Galan

He had founded New Liberalism
together with Lara Bonilla.

Five years had passed
after the Minister of Justice's murder,

and Galan was favorite
to win the presidential elections

We've had to fight

against the most serious of problems
in Colombian society.

It arrived in our country

as it did in more than 60 countries
around the world.

I'm talking about the obscure
and criminal power of drug trafficking.

l read some documents
when l was 11

in which he denounced
the infiltration of drug money

into politics in the year '78.

He didn't do it
because he was a moralist

or because he deemed
drugs or a joint immoral,

he didn't do it because of that.

He considered the corruptive power
of drug money immoral.

l think my father
was the last politician in Colombia

who gathered huge crowds
rallied by one man.

The only incentive
in his demonstrations

was going to listen to him.

We're changing the mindset
of the Colombian people,

which is what's needed
so we can progress!

Political leaders
are never remembered

by the number of hospitals they built,
orthe schools, roads or bridges.

Leaders are remembered
for that change

in the way a society
thinks at a certain point.

The Kennedys,
the Martin Luther Kings,

the Gandhis...

l think the country remembers
Luis Carlos Galan because of that,

because he somehow brought about
a change in the way people thought

and caused an impact
in Colombia's collective consciousness

So that no other Colombian
feels ashamed

of showing his passport again

At that time,
we were lucky to accompany our dad.

Just once, when we toured
through 60 municipalities.

I told him that 60 municipalities
were enough No more.

Since l was very little
l remember my dad

had always the need
to have security.

But during that year, in '89, there was
a threat that felt really close.

- Galan's life has been threatened
- Yeah.

There may bean attempt on his life.
He's got 80 guards around.

Don't explain it to me

I'm not a Galan follower.
Don't try to convince me

After what happened with Rodrigo,
my dad had to be much more protected

so an attempt on his life
would be much harder to accomplish.

That's what l thought at the time.

He gave two statements
which l think dealt with the fact

that he was a bit sad and worried.

ln one of them, he said that men
could be eliminated, but not ideas.

ln the other one,
a reporter cousin of mine,

told him, ''There's a chance
you won't be Colombia's president.

Not now, not ever.
You may never get to the presidency.''

So he told her,
''Of course that's a possibility.

''I like to follow the example of those
who never got to the presidency

but who exerted much more influence
on Colombia than many presidents''

And he basically mentioned cases
of murdered people.

He's with us already .

Please...

He was hit!

That night, l truly hoped
it wasn't serious

because l helped him put on
a bullet-proof vest.

So that kept me calm,
despite the waiting at the hospital.

Two or three minutes later,
a doctor came out of surgery

and he asked, ''Who's the family?''

He made us have a seat
and then he told us.

He didn't stall. He just told us,
''There's nothing we can do. He died.''

August 18, 1989
LUis Carlos Galan was murdered.

With him, the hope of millions
of Colombians died.

It's absurd, l think,
the place where Sebastian,

Rodrigo and the Galan kids
were left in life being so young.

They were children
when a hurricane passed

through their lives
and destroyed them.

Sebastian's decision
to collaborate in this project

made him reflecton the past.

In Febryary 2008
he asked us to deliver

a letter to Galan
and Lara Bonilla's sons.

''Respected Claudio Juan Manuel,
Carlos and Rodrigo

''How do you write to a family
that was terribly hurt by your father?

''What do you say to men your age
prefoundly hurt by it?''

''How do you start a conversation
with someone

''who carries
such a legitimate sorrow inside?

''How can you ask forgiveness to
an entire nation without offending it?''

''Apart from apologizing
in your father's name

''and still knowing you live in shame
is that even enough?

''I'm aware of the damage my father

''has caused the country
and humanity with his actions

''For one supposedly logical reason,

''I should avenge my father's death

''and that reason has fed the hatred
against my family and me

''I daily wake up seeking for peace

''because what I've learned
from this story

''is that I don't think anybody
should act upon violence

''or use it as an exuse

''I simply don't think we come
to this world to hurt each other

''I believe there are nobler reaseons
to live and to enjoy life.

''I understand I was born
in a fertile environment for violence,

''but the legacy of being born
in such a hostile place

''couldn't have been any other
than taking up the search for peace.

''I don't want to repeat history.

''With his violence, my father
forced many families to live in exile,

''mainly yours,

''ignoring that by doing that,
he was also surreptitiously causing

''the exile of his dearest people.

''I invite you to free ourselves
from every string

''that prevents us from exteriorizing
what lies in our hearts,

''from talking
and being able to listen,

''from understanding that
if we continue on this slide of hatred

''there won't be a future for us
or the country .

Respetfully Sebastian Marroquin.''

l think that...

it's a brave gesture... and noble.

l believe that familywas forced
to pay for the father's sins mainly.

We have suffered the ordeal
of losing a relative.

However, maybe one cannot easily
fathom his ordeal and tragedy.

Society condemns
not only what Pablo Escobar meant,

but it also condemns his family,
his sons and his wife.

And that condemnation
is still in force.

Our fathers were killed years ago,

and somehow we've been able
to heal the wounds-- not forget--

but live a normal life.

Many people still have
fresh wounds

due to the violence experience
in this country ,

and they easily fall victim
to those common violence cycles.

A multitude attented Galan's burial
to say goodbye to their leader

and to claim justice.

With no one to replace him,
Colombia's future was uncertain

It was his oldest son, Juan Manuel,
only 17 years old,

who askedCesar Gaviria
to take his father's place.

I want to thank the people
in the name of my family,

for the solidarity you've shown to us.

And I'd like to ask Mr. Cesar Gaviria

in the name of the people
and of my family

to continue my father's fight.

You have our support
to be the president

Colombia wanted and needed

l knew for sure
that l was taking a lot of risks,

but l would take them anyway.

We know today that Avianca's plane
was dropped down to kill me.

They blew up the DAS building,
causing hundreds of deaths.

It's hard to imagine
a more threatened state

than the Colombian state
in Escobar's era.

There's a national order
not to extradite

anyone connected
to Cesar Gaviria.

The order is bad.
The order is bad. He has no choice.

Despite Escobar's threats,

in May 1990, Gaviria
assumed Colombia's presidency.

Colombian's number one enemy
is the terrorist Pablo Escobar

and his criminal organization
which murders,

mercilessly and unceremoniously,

innocent children, women and men.

We have to create some really,
really big chaos to be called to peace.

When there's a big war,
they want us to go to peace.

That's the only formula I know.

If we hit politicians,
burn their houses,

and wage a really big war,

then they have to call us
to talk in peace

and then we'll solve
all our problems.

I don't see another solution.

We have to fight
with all our heart brother.

If we all have to die,
then we'll all die.

Nothing compares to the cruelty
and horror Escobar was capable of .

The entire Colombian society felt

terrorism was a resuIt of extradition.

And they'd always said once extradition
was out of the picture,

they would put terrorism aside.

My father said extradition was simply
the only thing those guys feared.

He realized that.

You could take their planes,

and they'd laugh
because they could get them back.

You could take their cars,
and they'd laugh.

Those men only fear extradition.
We have to send them away.

My father was so powerful
at that time of his life

that he issued decrees
to his liking...

and he changed the Constitition
to get awaywith his objective.

In July 1991,
Escobar got what he wanted.

Colombia adopted a new Constitution,

which prohibited
the extradition of Colombian citizens

for crimes committed in their country .

It was proof of the power
of the drug trafficking cartels.

Whatwas happening was insane.

It was insane that only one man,
a civilian, would have so much influence

on public and political autorities.

They waited until extradition
was abolished from Constitition

to turn themselves in.

It's 5:00 p.m.
The order has been issued

The two helicopters rise in the air.

One of them descends
over El Poblado neighborhood,

right in the urban area.

There are no images, no pictures

Pablo Escobar is behind bars.

No longer fearing axtradition,

Escobar came to an agreement
with the govermnet

He'd turn himself in
and spend some time in prison

But not just any prison

He chose the location himself

and supervised the construction
of his own prison: La Catredal.

As a consequence of the peace politics
and a strengthening of justice

coming from the president
and his cabinet

it is my wish to serve
all the necessary years in prison

to contribute to my family's peace,
to Colombia's peace,

to the strengthening
and the respect for human rights,

and to the strengthening
of civil power

and that of the democracy
of my dear Colombian country .

I also wish with my submission

to pay tribute to all the members
of the National Constituent Assembly

for their great contribution
to the noble cause of national peace.

I also want to honor my parents,

my irreplaceable and unequaled wife,

my 14-year-old pacifist son,

my seven-year-old
little toothless ballerina,

and all my family,
whom I love so much.

after finishing his work.

He thought it was a very nice
and comfortable house.

That's supposed to be the voice

It's a contradiction to me.

Those are things
l don't fully understand

about the character
my father was.

A guy who's been accused
of so much violence,

and as a father ,
that's the image l had of him.

How can one understand that paradox
at such an early age?

My dad.

l thought the letterwas a gesture
that had to be responded to.

Because l think he tried to get closer
and he did it honestly.

It's a clever letter,
it'swell-written,

and it's a letter of someone
who's opening his heart.

Three months
after receiving Sebastian's letter,

Rodrigo Lara
decides to take the next step.

Since Sebastian is afraid
of going to Colombia,

Rodrigo agrees to come with us
to Argentina to meet him.

For now, the meeting
has to be kept secret

That's why it takes place in Tigre,

a suburb of Buenos Aires
accessible only by boat.

- A great pleasure to meet you.

The paramilitary group
''Chased by Pablo Escobar,''

also known as Los Pepes,

was formed by members
of the cartel of Cali,

drug traffickers from Medellin,
now enemies of his old boss,

and members of the police force.

Los Pepes fought a dirty war
against Escobar and his organization

There were totally
unacceptable procedures.

That group called Los Pepes

were eager to destroy
Escobar's properties,

to endanger Escobar's family,
to stalk Escobar .

Gaviria said it's not civilians
who should take the law in their hands,

referring to the group Los Pepes,
who claimed responsibility

for the attacks
against Escobar's family.

Just as we condemn
Escobar's terrorist acts,

we also condemn the bombs
against the criminals' families.

It is the state, not the civilians,

who have the law
and the legitimacy of arms in its hands.

It is thought
but it hasn't been proved

that members of the police force
might've been involved in this.

When violence in Colombia
has come from groups outside the law,

the country has been clear
about what the threats are.

But when the state
adopts that logic,

There was practically
no hope of recovery.

There were no options.

Turning in was not an option,
nobody wanted him alive.

Surrendering
wasn't good for anybody.

The only way out was his death.

When my father
escaped from La Catedral,

he was worried about our security

and he asked us
to move to the U.S.,

where we would be safer.

We had to go two hours
before the plane took off .

l arrived six hours before,
and l started to see movements..

Clearly, the people
who were going to kill us.

There was no doubt.

Seeing four , five,
six cars in a row,

four hooded men in each one.

You don't have to be
a genius to realize

that something was going
to happen to our family.

Journalists started to arrive...

some from the radio,
who were nearby in the airport,

others by chance,

and later, TV cameras
started to arrive.

Only one person from an airline

came up to me discreetly
and told me,

''Whatever l can do to help you,
count on me.''

l told him, ''Help me.
Please bring a helicopter here.

l will pay for the rent.
Have it take us out of here.''

The only thing the people
who are going to kill me

don't have right now
is a helicopter.

Los Pepes had control of the airport

Still, Sebastian managed
to escape by helicopter

from what looked like a sure death

Fearing for their lives,
Escobar had them moved to his hideout

That same night
Sebastian and his sister

heard that their visa for the U.S.
had been canceled

At night, we were with my father

and we saw on the news

that the ambassador at that time,

had ordered to cancel our visas.

That was part of the strategy
to keep us as bait.

Soon after that,
Sebastian, his mother and his sister

tried to leave Colombia
for the second time

In November 1993,
they went to Germany

where they sought,
and were denied political asylum.

There, we were
separated and interrogated

for hours and hours on end
by the police and the lnterpol.

But the decision
had already been made.

The German authorities
were pressured,

and we came back
into the country .

When they returned,
the government decided

that Medellin was too dangerous
for Escobar's family.

They were put
under official protection

in a hotel owned
by the armed forces in Bogota.

From there, they could also control
their communications with Escobar

The army immediately cordoned off

the area of the Tequendama residence,

where the wife and two children

of the former leader of the cartel
of Medellinare staying.

The main entrance is almoust closed.

A strange vehicle caught the attention
of the authorities.

The bomb squad arrived immediately.

In the end, it was a false alarm.

We constantly received threats
in our roooms,

from inside the hotel.

l mean, probably all our enemies
were a floor below us.

Desperate to reach his family,

Escobar broke
his own security rules.

We'd been told
we could not receive calls

from someone
who did not identify him self.

l almost carried my dad's curse on me.

l almost had to continue that story
that l didn't want for my life.

to my father's past.

Changing my name

was the only choice we found

to try and be free again.

The trip is tense

to beso close to Colombia.

and my gauge to avoid going.

Before going, Sebastian warned us

This is as close to Colombia
as he dared go.

However, being there in the border,

he decides to talk
about his leaving for the first time

l feel sad he's got so much pain
for not being able to be there.

After Pablo Escobar's death,
my mother was told

that there would be peace,
but only once l died.

She said a peace like that
was no good for her,

and that she preferred
to offer her life as warranty

that l would behave
up to the circumstances.

My life was worth $4 million.

That was the price on my head.

That was what was offered
to some friends of mine

in exchange for putting
some powder in my soda.

l had to go to a meeting
to see my father's enemies.

Before that meeting, l wrote my will.
l really doubted I'd come out alive.

A series of conditions
were imposed

that l had to obey
if l didn't want to die.

One of them was leaving the country .

Another one was l couldn't get involved
in drug trafficking.

l told them they didn't need to worry
about the second one,

because l had learned my lesson
about drug trafficking

and l thought it was a curse.

They almost killed me at that moment.

So l had to take the risk.

We decided to do it and we left.

We left our country ,
we left our family.

We left... everything,
absolutely everything.

Sebastian studied industrial design

would catch up with them.

ln 1999,

four years after coming to Argentina,

an accountant who managed
some of my mother's properties

and her personal accounts
in Argentina

found out about our real story.

He started to pressure us
to give him money for his silence,

for not telling our real identities
to the Argentinean justice.

We reported him
to this country's justice,

because we thought that
if we paid attention to his threats,

we would be running all our lives

from every person who got close to us
and found out about our identity.

We ended up in jail.

We were directly threatened
by him and his attourney

that they would use
part of that money

to buy cocaine
and plant it in our cars.

If they found cocaine
in Escobar's son's car,

the last person they would believe
was Sebastian.

We were victims of a framing
for money laundering,

passing false documents,
and after that, illicit association.

l spent 45 days in jail,

and my mother was robbed
of 18 months of her life.

It was very hard,

l had to spend months
in hard and small cells.

All this because we carry
Pablo Escobar's DNA

The Supreme Court ruled
everything in our favor

after the most thorough
investigation

l was always
questioning myself, l mean,

what is going to happen
with this story, with all this pain?

How long arewe going
to endure this never-ending exile?

l never came back
since l left the country .

My most honorable way
would be silence,

to completely disappear
from national life

and from what happens
in the country .

Colombia is a country that's gone
through different phases of violence.

Violence has been inherited.

Hate has been inherited.

In September 2008 three years
after breaking his silence

and despite
that he still fears for his life,

Sebastian finally decides
to go to Colombia.

Very few know about this trip.

It looks like human beings
in certain moments

think that the only way

to make up for damage,
to make amends for it,

is by causing a proportional one.

It's the Talion Law,
it's in the Bible.

But I'm Colombian, too,

l mean, l don't want to give up
my nationality.

l love my country .

l shouldn't be part of it

just because my father
did things the wrong way.

From his seat
in Colombia's Senate,

Juan Manuel Galanhas become
one of the main driving forces

behind the debate
about the legalization of drugs.

In his first political foray,

his brother Carlos was elected
for Bogota's City Council.

Claudio Galan
is a member of the cabinet member

of Colombia's main department.

have never ceased to claim justice
for their father's murder

or to dream about some day
relaunching New Liberalism

Rodrigo Lara
was elected senator, too.

His investigations against corruption
gave him powerful enemies,

among them former members
of Los Pepes.

Deep down, l agree.

The ideal thing would be to legalize,
and we'd got rid of that business.

But there's an issue
l don't want to forget.

Nothing has been in vain.

My father's sacrifice,
Galan's sacrifice,

the sacrifice
of so many police officers,

it's all been to prevent Colombia
from being a narco-democracy,

to prevent organized crime
from seizing the Colombian state.

in Bogota,

LUis Carlos Galan's
and Rodrigo Lara Bonilla's sons

meet Pablo Escobar's son.

l haven't stopped thinking
about this issue,

because l think it's very important

what we're going to do tonight.

The message for the country ,

the meeting between Sebastian

we understood reconciliation
was only the first step

during the last months of 2008,

to me, it's been
the most special moment of my life,

the most joyful one.

It gave me freedom,
and it lifted a weight off my shoulders.

Every teenager, every young person
wants to be Pablo Escobar ,

but they still don't know
very well why

and what this person did.

They don't know the story,
but they want to be Pablo.

l think if they knew it,

no one would dare repeat it.

Why am l not a drug trafficer?

Because l was with my father ,

hiding next to him,

surrounded by millions of dollars,

and we were starving

because we had a police post
in front of the house

where we'd been hiding for a week,
and we ran out of food.

That's when l understood

that the money from drug trafficking
is absolutely worth less.
