A very important date to the German

intelligence in Holland marks the

beginning of our narrative.

On that gray November day, after long

and painstaking efforts, they were about

to smash a clandestine radio link with

London.

It's hard to understand how the

intelligence service overlooked the

emission. The theory has been advanced

that the message arrived during a heavy

bombardment. Under such conditions, a

nervous operator might conceivably have

grown careless.

But this theory is of little value. The

truth is that all human creation, even

the most perfect, are subject to

unexplainable failures, the consequences

of which are often disastrous.

Why the British intelligence failed to

detect the obvious warning in Lander's

message remains the great question mark

in what is passed into history as

Operation North Pole.
