I was planning on buying a
plot of land from my uncle.

- You won't take over this farm?

- No, it will go to Caleb.

The Amish pass their farms
to their youngest son.

- So your uncle, he didn't
have any children of his own?

- No, and Silas left the
house and most of the land

to his brother, Amen, but the
parcel that I was gonna buy,

he left for me.

we got a call from Jessica Stockton.

Her husband works at the Land
County Development Department,

and Jeff told her that
somebody had called asking

about buying the parcel of land
that Silas had left for me.

- Well, they can't do that,
not if Silas had a will.

- Well, this man is saying
that Silas never actually owned

the land and, therefore, he
couldn't give it to anyone,

and the people at the
county office are saying

that they can't find any record of it.

- I'm sure your uncle had some kind

of document, like a deed.

- We found a deed for the main
piece of land with the house,

but nothing for the section
that he left for me.

- So what are you gonna do?

- I do not know, but if we
don't find it, lose the land.

[upbeat orchestra music]

[calm orchestra music]

- [Jeff] Craziest thing.

- [Cheryl] No thanks.

- An offer came in before
we even knew the owner

was deceased.

That's why I called Jessica

and told her she should call the Millers.

- I'm so glad you did.

- A lot of people around
here are not above board

when it comes to the Amish.

They assume they aren't
educated, and they won't sue.

- Is there a paper copy of the deed?

- That's just it.

There's no record of that parcel.

It's like it doesn't exist.

- So the county can sell it.

but my best guess is the
buyer knows some people higher

- I can't say, but they aren't interested

in farming the land.
