This is Britain's most unforgiving
environment.

I don't know where we're going.

Just, sort of, going into
the unknown here.

Thousands of acres of rugged
wilderness.

Into the middle of Mordor,
by the looks of things.

Bump into Frodo around here.

This time of year, the weather can
change from 25 degrees in the day

to under two degrees at night.

Quite worried, if I'm honest,
I can't see anything

for shelter at the minute.

Two teams of complete strangers
have been paired together

for their strengths and weaknesses.

For the next three days,
they will race head-to-head in a bid

to conquer and escape this harsh
environment.

Such a huge area with nothing
at all.

To reach the finish line,

they must make a treacherous descent
to the bottom of a deep gorge,

trek along a river valley,

climb a mountain, and cross miles
of open moorland to get

back to civilisation.

There's nothing to forage.

It's all just grass.

I don't really know
what to expect from it.

In team one is Amie.

Mum of three, sportswoman and
skinny dipper.

WOLF WHISTLE

I feel as though I've got
good instincts.

I can forage well, I can build
a fire pretty well.

And I would say I'm really good
at sport, so I should be able to

hike the distances that we've got
to hike.

She's paired with fellow fitness
fanatic Michael.

Outdoorsman, an extreme marathon
runner.

My strengths will be navigation,
searching for food,

finding shelter, and also good
stamina.

It might sound a bit strange,
but I do kind of almost seek

discomfort and pain and pushing
myself to my limits and see

what I can achieve.

Here? Sweet.

And in team two, Luke.

Ex-squaddie, lorry driver and cage
fighter,

known as the Black Prince.

I went straight from being a kid to
a soldier.

So, you've always got people,

and then I transitioned to being a
lonely lorry driver.

I can go for hours just talking
to people on the phone

because I'm so lonely in the lorry,
but I'm looking forward to doing

the challenge with someone.

It makes a change
from being on me own.

He's paired with Katharine.

Ex-Royal Navy, and equine
photographer.

I've always wanted to be
shipwrecked on a desert island

because I've maybe not grown up.

And that's an aspect of the nudity,

because you just want the feeling

of being able to run free
like a child, before society

makes you grow up.

It's naked versus nature.

Stripped of all modern comforts,

will team two's military
discipline win out over

team one's amateur athleticism?

The moment for Michael to meet
his team-mate has arrived.

fanatics to size-up their rivals.

throughout the challenge,
in case of emergencies.

In these sacks are some basic
survival provisions - a knife,

a water bottle, a really basic
sleep liner, flint and steel.

And the all-important map, with your
first waypoint marked on it.

You've got one minute to use
your map to orientate yourself

and work out your direction
of travel.

KATHARINE LAUGHS
Let's have a look.

A hand-drawn map is all
they have for guidance as they race

for three days to get back

to civilisation.

On days one and two, their goal is
a checkpoint where a life box

containing a mystery prize is
waiting for the team that gets
there first.

They must work tactically
to conserve energy throughout

the challenge, because day three
is a sprint to the finish.

The fastest team wins five grand,
but to get it, they have to overcome

the biggest test of all,

a country village.

That's obviously where we've got
to get to.

How do you want to work it?

Well, I'm going to say that is
north.

So, let's say we just head
down this way...

It's a valley.

They're arranging to go the wrong
way.

We could head that way, right,

behind us, and then divert off that
way.

Shall we do that? Yeah.

Good luck.

Look after yourself, look after
your team-mate.

Their first challenge, a steep
ravine.

Well, here we go.

Katharine gets off to a flying
start.

Oops! A rock was it?

Just fell over.

Quite surreal, isn't it? Yeah.

THEY LAUGH

Both teams have seen the same
map, but head off in

wildly different directions.

The others are well out of sight
now, let's have a look at that...

Have a look at this. Yeah.

Obviously, that's that mountain up
there.

If we keep going in this direction,
that's the valley,

it'll lead us to the river. We'll
follow it all the way up to

the wood block on the right side.

Ex-squaddie Luke has a bold plan.

Take the most direct route down the

mountain to the shelter of the
valley.

Risk injury, but win the challenge.

Just the mountain ridge
dips down a bit there,

as if you could just hop
over it, don't you think?

I prefer the valley because it's
out of the wind, but...

Yeah, all right, we'll go do that.

Oh, my God!

Watch out for the marshy bit,
otherwise you'll sink.

It's less than an hour in,
and Katharine is already

raiding their supplies.

Luke, can you get the water
out, please?

I'm used to drinking quite
a lot of water.

Oh, it's not... It's a heavy flask,

but there's not that much water
in it.

Just ration it, you'll be
all right.

I think I'm really easy to get
along with because I have

an ability to speak to people on
many different levels.

And I do enjoy being in a team.

When you drink from it, just try
not to touch your mouth

on it, if we've got to share.

While the ex-military are pushing
hard to reach the waypoint...

..the fitness fanatics are
taking their time.

To keep up their strength
over the next three days,

Amie and Michael are prioritising
foraging for food over speed.

What are these? I've not even
seen these before.

Fortunately for them, Michael
is an expert in wild plants.

When it comes to foraging for food,

I spend a lot of my time
looking for different plants.

Mostly I've been quite successful,
but I have ended up in A&E

eating poison hemlock.

But I think I've learned from that
one and I know

how to identify that, definitely.

Eating something,
to check it won't kill you -

great idea.

has been nearly five hours

without her necessities.

The other thing that's a comfort
that you wouldn't think

downhill has put them nearly two

miles ahead of the other team.

fire-starting material that will
boost one team's chances of surviving

the night, and winning the cash
prize.

But when you're tired and hungry,
navigating through the dense

and trackless forest is
disorientating.

It's absolutely great working
with Luke, it's lovely.

The pros of being naked
is it's a really lovely feeling

when the breeze is on you,

it's so free and lovely.
And obviously the cons

are that you can't wear a bra.

It's debilitating.

Katharine and Luke have spent
over half an hour

wandering in circles.

It's cos I haven't had any
Belgian buns.

To get their bearings, they go
back onto the track.

because if I was really thin,

I'd struggle with the cold.

So, I think my fat reserves
are really going to

help me through.

In their bags, both teams have a
flint and steel.

But for Navy veteran Katharine,

it isn't a skill she's ever
needed at sea.

I'm a fire starter.

Team one didn't get any dry
kindling,

but outdoorsman Michael is coping
without it.

I work in the outdoor activity
sector.

We take groups of people swimming
through caves, kayaking,

rock climbing. So, a nice mix of
survival skills.

Some good material there.

Really just want to get this fire
going as quick as possible.

Like... You've got it, yeah.
Like that? That's it, yeah.

That's it, as soon as you get one
decent spark.

Oh! There we are. OK, I did it.

I made fire!

It's starting to get dark already.

I'm not looking forward
to sleeping outside tonight,

given that we've literally got
the bare minimum!

We've got nothing.

Amie and Michael have fire and can
start to build their shelter.

Like, be nice if we're close
to the fire, wouldn't it? Uh-huh.

Hopefully, it'll just rest.

OK, now. My game plan with the
shelter now is just to provide

enough protection from the rain,

basically, to hold the heat of the
fire.

To stop them being suffocated
by the smoke,

their shelter needs a very high
ceiling.

Might be a bit of a grand design.

We're just going for bigger
is better, I suppose.

of tools jeopardise his master plan.

Despite winning the dry
kindling, Katharine and Luke

still don't have fire.

This needs to be the base frame,

I think we've made a mistake.

I think we should have been more

focused on the food aspect
and the foraging.

I'd rather be eating some berries
now, so it's a real lesson

that I need to get things when
I see them,

and then it'll pay off later on.

Luke has plumped for a bijou,
tent-like structure.

This is quite open-plan, isn't it?

Amie and Michael's more deluxe
dwelling has

a thatched roof, fitted carpet...

I think that looks fine.

..and central heating.

Me and Amie have gotten on quite
well, actually,

we've got a lot in common, we're
both parents.

Just having a good crack, really.

Katharine and Luke have eaten
nothing and their shelter is basic.

You start to realise how real it is

and what a real survival situation
it actually is.

It would be a nightmare
if the fire went out.

As night falls, the cold creeps in.

The temperature will drop steadily
until the sun rises again,

more than eight hours from now.

When you walk away from the fire,
it's a lot colder.

I'm not really looking forward
to a freezing cold night with no

blankets, just moss for a floor,
starving hungry.

Two teams of wannabe survivalists
have spent their first night out

in the harsh British wilderness.

The temperature dropped
to six degrees, and it rained.

Early-riser Luke is already up.

How did you sleep, Luke?

Oh, terrible, what about you?

Awful, I didn't sleep at all.

Katharine and Luke's fire
was so far from their shelter,

it went out, and with only
a moss duvet for warmth,

they're now freezing cold.

I reckon we should have had the
campfire nearer to this shelter.

Not a bad shout. Freezing, isn't it?

Yeah. Have to get moving.
It's starting to rain, is it?

It was hell, absolute hell.

I could just feel the temperature
dropping and dropping as the night

went on and it just lasted forever.

Yeah, I was cold.

I'm still body-popping now,
so hopefully we'll get moving and

get on the go and I'll get warmer.

Today's checkpoint is on the other
side of a 3,000ft mountain range.

Along the way are some survival
items providing food,

warmth and shelter.

But to get them, they must

climb an extra 500 feet.

Their first obstacle,
a freezing river.

OK, so we're here.

We're here.

We've got to get there.
Yeah, the food's there.

So, shall we head down there?

Better off going up there, though.
That's the valley.

You follow that valley,
then it meets.

So, if we go over the river, come
up that valley there.

Over there? Yeah. Easiest route,
innit? Yeah. Sorted!

After a hungry night, Luke and
Katharine decide the chance

of food is worth the extra climb.

Find the food checkpoint. Yeah,
that'd be great. Hopefully!

Oh, the valuable water.

Amie and Michael slept right next
to their fire, and kept it alight.

But they are up over an hour later
than Katharine and Luke.

How did you feel this morning
when you woke up?

I wasn't too bad.

Kept on tending to the fire.

I kept you warm.

That's probably why I slept so
well, you did all the work,

while I slept.
SHE LAUGHS

Katharine and Luke reach the
river...

Let's cross on the widest bit here.

The body's extremities are the most
vulnerable to the cold.

They must try to keep their feet
out of the freezing mountain stream.

because otherwise I get flustered.

The military vets pick their way

With boots on, it's going to be ten
times, easier due to the rocks.

But you pay for that by getting
your feet and your socks sweat.

So, it was a lazy option,
to be honest.

I tried to cross over on the
stones ended up perfectly failing.

But despite their wet feet,
team two are now a mile

ahead of their rivals.

I don't even care about food
any more,

it's just the cold.

AMIE: Shall we have a look at the
map?

So, we're here and we need to get
to there.

I think we need to follow
that stream.

And then finally we're going to get
across the river,

just like you wanted. Yeah.

We're going to go up these hills
here, just around this, right,

and then follow this kind of a bit
of a gorge.

Hopefully, the clouds are
cleared off. Yeah.

Amie and Michael also decide to
climb the extra height

for the chance of getting to the
food first.

I'm so cold. Yeah, I know.

But they arrive at the river
over an hour behind their rivals.

I think we'll be fine just over

They spend a further 22 minutes
choosing the ideal crossing point.

they must tackle the unforgiving

cliff faces of the mountain,
and winds of up to 50mph.

Crucial survival items are right
on its peak.

Amie and Michael take the steepest

but most sheltered route up the
cliff,

away from the prevailing winds.

I think it's the steepest
incline I've ever climbed.

It's a straight drop, really.

Me calves are killing us.
Proper burning.

We want a biscuit, don't we? Yeah.

Katharine and Luke are following
a less steep route up the mountain.

It really is desolate and painful.

With wet feet and no food for 24
hours,

they're already struggling.

I've put myself through discomfort
in many different forms.

From when I've run marathons
before,

they're quite painful, especially
towards the end.

You have to condition your mind,

and I think I'm very good at
endurance.

Straight to the top and over? Yeah.
It's the only option we got.

I just have had no experience
of long hikes with no clothes.

Marathon runner Katharine is no
slouch, but cold, hunger and

wet feet have put her on the back
foot, and now

she's on a downward spiral.

of just given up, and that if I go

..I just wouldn't make it.

a night without fire, and a gruelling
mountain hike

without her clothes, Katharine
says goodbye to Luke and her share

cos she's an old Navy girl, so I

but she proved me wrong.

I'd like to win the race
in honour of Katharine.
