We just got dispatched
to a report of a fight

happening on Church Street.

...an assault in
a busy shopping centre...

That first call where it's respond
to a fight in progress,

the adrenaline starts going.

...and the police
are out to stop bike crime.

He hasn't got a helmet, right there.

- Did you see which way he went?
- He went down that way.

There's a tradition in
the Bermuda Police of long service.

Get back, please, people.

Most of its officers have been
in the job for 15 years, or more.

At 40 years old,

Acting Inspector Tiffany Caisey

has been a police officer
for nearly half her life.

19 years ago, my mother kept
leaving the police application form

on the dining room table, saying,
"I think you will be good at this".

I finally took the hint,
and I applied,

and, yeah, I joined.

Acting Inspector Tiffany

is as committed now to the job
as on her first day.

Everyone is not always
a police officer 24 hours a day,

365 days a year.

I am.

And it's something that I have to
try to balance between my work,

professional life,
and my personal life.

I am always on the job.

In the far west of the island,

she's in charge
of a group of officers

using their stop and search powers,

trying to make the community safer.

You can find drugs and knives,

kitchen knives.

Some people have had machetes.

It's always better in numbers.

You have someone
to write out the forms,

you have someone to carry out
the search of the vehicles.

It's all about safety first.

Her colleague,
Sergeant Mervin Homer,

flags down a motorist at random.

Good afternoon, sir.
How are you doing?

Do you have anything sharp
on you, in your pockets?

- No, no.
- OK. I'm just going
to give you a search, all right?

All right, open the trunk,
let me see.

Oh. Oh, yeah, yeah.

In Bermuda, possession of less
than 7g of cannabis

for personal use
has been decriminalised.

If it's above 7g,
it's an instant arrest.

...is an arrestable offence.

All right.
I'm going to search this car.

Under 7g?

Acting Inspector Tiffany
and Sergeant Mervin

need to make a judgment call.

I have worked in narcotics.

I looked at it, I felt it,

I honestly do believe
that it was under 7g.

If it is over 7g,

that won't stop us from putting a
file together for prosecution, yeah?

But the officers will need to go
on more than just guesswork.

What's going to happen is
that we're going to seize this

and send it to the lab for testing.

For now at least, the man is free
to go with just a caution.

Results from testing
concluded it was cannabis,

but luckily for the man,
the amount was under 7g.

Not all officers in the force
have clocked up years of service.

Tyler Kendall has been
in the police for only a year,

but experience runs in his family.

Well, my grandad was a police
officer in the UK first.

I've heard a thousand stories
about what it's like to be

a police officer, so that
definitely influenced me.

As I kind of grew a bit older,

I saw more of what the police do

and... and I could picture
myself being there with them.

Today, Officer Tyler is on patrol
with his regular partner,

Officer Jen Suter...

...when they get an urgent call.

-
- I need units there.
I need units to respond.

Yeah, whisky three from ops.

We just got dispatched
to a report of a fight

happening on Church Street.

It's not in our district,

but we do happen to be quite close,

so we are just going to make our way
to start backing up the town units

that are here.

That first call where it's
respond to a fight in progress

at this location,
the adrenaline starts going.

The only information
is that the fight has started

at a nearby shopping mall.

-
- Last seen running...

If weapons are involved,
we still do go,

but you want to also have
the presence

of the armed response units
there as well.

The officers discover that other
units have already arrested

a man suspected of the assault.

Thankfully, there were some armed
response units in the area,

and they happened
to respond really quickly,

so by the time we showed up,

they already had
one of the guys arrested.

Now the focus shifts to the man
who's been injured in the fight.

Right now, we're
just going to head back

to who we think is the victim

and get their report
of what happened.

The victim of the alleged attack has
been treated by emergency medics.

What are his injuries?

We're going to head back to see
if there's any footage.

The officers can't rely
only on the injured man's word.

They need solid evidence
to prove what happened

before charging
the already arrested suspect.

It seems like at this time
that one of the males approached

the other, asked for some money
and was refused,

and so became aggressive
and ended up punching the guy.

The information originally
received from this assault

is the fact that
it started in the mall.

At the moment, what we're doing is
we're going to go inside the mall,

see if there's any companies
that might have CCTV footage.

So, a bit of detective work now.

You don't ever really know
if something's been caught

until you actually go
witness it yourself,

and so it was essential
to get our hands on that footage

as quickly as possible.

- Hi.
- Hi, mam. So we've just been made
aware of an incident

that might have happened
inside the mall,

- probably about half...
- Yeah, I wasn't up here for that.

You didn't see anything? OK.

All right. OK, no worries.
No worries, thank you.

First enquiries draw a blank.

Would we be able to view CCTV
footage from within the last hour?

OK, do you know
what time it started?

But then,
there's a CCTV breakthrough.

-
- So the original call
came in at 13.09.

It was around one o'clock, yeah.

With the timeframe narrowed down,

the shopping centre's cameras
should've captured the incident,

but finding exactly
the right footage is painstaking.

Finally, they spot something,

but it seems to be the aftermath
of the alleged assault.

Do you have footage facing
kind of the other direction?

OK.

OK, so they initially start arguing
probably by the stairway, then.

Just keep it rolling a second,
just so we can see.

- That's not the victim.
- No, no.

- Yeah...
- Yeah, I think that might be him.

He took MY sunglasses.
I think that is him, then.

And have you got another camera that
looks, kind of, down a bit more?

They find the start of the incident,
which shows the two men

engaging in physical fighting...

...before the injured man
reacts in self-defence.

You could clearly see
the initial assault on camera,

and so that's always
a relief, getting to see,

you know, exactly the offence
that you're trying to arrest for.

You have evidence right there.

CCTV is always, always going
to benefit any investigation.

- All right.

We now hope that all the evidence
that was gathered is enough

to convict the person
that was involved.

You know, you want
that as any outcome,

especially when someone's been hurt.

A man was arrested
in relation to the incident,

with charges pending.

Another officer in
the police service

with many years of experience behind
her is Police Constable Lisa Tucker.

The one thing that they
always say about me

is that Miss Tucker talks too much.

Oh, my hat, my hat, my hat.

But, even 13 years of service

doesn't make her immune
to making rookie errors.

OK, so today is my day off
and I completely forgot

cos I didn't put it in my phone,
so there's nothing worse

when you're supposed to be on
a day off and you come to work.

Opting to work anyway,

Officer Lisa is making
traffic stops...

...when she gets an urgent call.

So, we just got a call
for... a collision

that's occurred
on South Road, Summerhaven,

which is by John Smith Bay,

so it's a 1057, which is
a collision with... with injuries.

Yeah, it looks like the EMTs
have arrived prior to us

in the ambulance.

I see one vehicle on the side here

that looks like it's got
frontal damage to it.

Thankfully, there
were no serious injuries.

Officer Lisa's attention
now turns to what happened,

in case any proceedings
need to be considered.

Erm, no witnesses?

No, they both came after.

Right, OK.

She speaks to the drivers involved.

Hi, how are you?
Morning, morning.

- So, this is where
the collision occurred?
- Yes.

OK. So, apparently,
the driver of this vehicle

was travelling west on South Road,

and as he approached the bend,

he saw the other vehicle
on his side of the road,

and he just came over,
I guess, as much as he can

to avoid the collision,

but the car was still coming
on his side of the bend.

So, I need to go speak to
the driver of the other vehicle.

The car seems to have veered
into the path of the van,

on the wrong side of the road,

but it's a mystery what caused it.

So, how did your vehicle
end up here, then?

It looks like it may have touched.
Do you know if it touched?

I can see the markings here,
and I can see the markings there.

So, you intentionally...

You intended to drive up here?

The accident does not appear to
involve dangerous driving,

so for Officer Lisa
it's not a criminal matter...

Once the tow truck comes,

then you're able...

He can come into it
and move your vehicle, OK?

We have all the information
we need, OK?

...which means the clear-up
operation can begin.

On a main road
in the west of the island,

the police are conducting
stop and searches...

...when Acting Inspector Tiffany
pulls over a familiar face.

I actually know this gentleman

and ironically,
we first met in custody

when I was the custody sergeant
booking him in,

and... because
it was a good interaction,

we've been OK ever since.

Your driver's licence all in order?

No? There is nothing
I can do about that man, come on.

The man doesn't have
a valid driving licence...

Didn't we just stop you last week?
We just saw you drive by.

...but recognising the rider
will not distract

Acting Inspector Tiffany
from doing her duty.

All this time
you didn't have a licence?

The Hitching Post,
Middle Road and Wreck Road,

requesting a full 31 check, please.

Vehicle is unlicenced and uninsured
since September 2024.

The officers decide to conduct
a full search of the man's bike...

...when they make
a shocking discovery.

What is this for, sir?
You go fishing?

You went fishing today?

In Bermuda, possession
of a knife is only legal

if there's a valid reason.

The person said that they
had the knife for fishing,

but there was no other fishing items
or articles in that bike.

People try to pull the wool
over your eyes,

but you've got to wake up earlier
than that for this.

You're not obliged to say anything
unless you wish to do so.

Whatever you say may be put
into writing and given in evidence,

all right?

The man is taken to custody
at Hamilton Police Station.

First up, the driving offences.

The fines total more than
the average Bermudian weekly wage.

Use of a bike without
an active valid driver's licence

is 100 dollars.

Use of a motorcycle
without an active vehicle licence

is 250 dollars,

and no third-party insurance,

the courts these days
are doing it anywhere between...

1,000 and 1,500 for this.

Start taking your jewellery off.

I'll get a plastic bag
so that you can put it in.

You don't have anything
in your socks, do you?

Next is the charge for being
in possession of a knife

over three inches,
considered the most serious offence.

Yes.

Check reveal that subject have
a full-length pocket knife

under the bike seat.

So, what's going to happen
is that, erm,

you're going to be bailed to court.

After spending
a few hours in custody,

the man will appear before
the judge to face the charges.

Three miles from the capital,

Officers Tyler and Jen are
on the hunt for a motorbike.

Be on the lookout for
a Scooter Mart rental scooter.

It's an urgent matter of safety.

One of the scooter rental companies
has reported to police

that someone's rented
a scooter from Dockyard,

and they've actually got
three people on the actual cycle,

and that's... that's not allowed.
We only should be riding with two.

Initial reports are that a young
child is one of the passengers.

With too many
travelling on the bike,

there's greater risk of an accident.

Ten four. We're coming into Dockyard
now, so we'll keep an eye.

- ...wearing
a white T-shirt and black shorts.

- The other male wearing
a yellow T-shirt.
- Is that three?

That still has three people on it.

- So, we're just going to go
and stop it, and have a word.
- Yeah.

The scooter riders are American
cruise ship passengers.

How are you doing?

Erm, do you know
why you've been pulled over?

You can't have three
people on a bike.

Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, not everyone
knows the rules.

I know other countries overseas can
have more than two people, but...

Oh, no, no. It's just that,
obviously, you know,

just more safety than anything.

In the UK, a child's feet
must reach the footrests

to ride as a motorcycle passenger,

but in Bermuda, where biking's
part of the culture,

that restriction isn't enforced.

All right, well
hold on to your daddy. Hold on!

The father and child
leave Mum behind

to hitch a lift with her sister.

It is an offence. You know,
not everybody knows

that it's against the law here
to have three people on a bike.

Officer Tyler may be a relative
newcomer to the police...

- Oh, they've put the bench back.
- Oh, yeah, look at that.

...but his family has
a history of long service.

It's as good a spot as any.

- A room with a view.
- Yeah. All right.

This is why I came to Bermuda.

His grandad, Roger,
was an officer in Leicestershire

before moving to Bermuda in 1970.

November, I got a letter
from Bermuda Police saying,

- we're going to accept you.
- Mm-hm, OK.

So, jumped on a plane,
came to Bermuda.

And for Officer Tyler,
it's a chance to hear more.

I spent that much time in the UK,
it was nice to make a break.

- Yeah.
- Everybody else
was stuck in a rut

- and I didn't want to be
stuck in a rut.
- Yeah.

How old would you have been?

- 23.
- 23.
- Yeah.

- OK, so that's about, about two years
younger than I am now.
- Yeah.

That's a big decision
at that time.

Policing back then
was very different

to the modern service that
Officer Tyler knows today.

I had a duty driver
and a sergeant mobile in a car...

- Yeah.
- ...and a jailer.

- That was the normal compliment
of the watch.
- Wow.

- So...
- Wow.
- ...a lot's changed
since then.

The pictures
that I've seen from back

when you were working with just,
you know, nothing but your shirt

and a tie and a wooden truncheon
and that was it.

Just a shirt
and a wooden truncheon, yeah.

For Officer Tyler, the bar is high,

as his grandad had an
illustrious career in Bermuda.

- Progressed from traffic
to driving school.
- Yep.

Driving school to training school,
accident and investigation,

then I got posted to uniform
in town as an inspector.

- Mm-hm. Yeah.
- Eventually got
promoted to chief inspector...
- OK.

...and became officer in charge
of eastern, western,

- central, and operations.
- Wow.

37 and a half years
in the police service.

I'm so proud of you now,

the fact that you're
following in my footsteps

and you've done so well thus far
in your training course,

and keep it up.

- The sky's the limit for you,
it literally is.

Officer Lisa Tucker
is continuing her shift

in the east of the island
with Officer Colby Pimentel.

They get a report
from a member of the public

that a motorbike is
being ridden dangerously,

putting others on the road at risk.

Ten four, received.

The officers need to find
the dangerous motorbike riders

before they, or others, are hurt,

but it won't be easy.

Because they're on bikes
and we're in cars,

and to manoeuvre through
those areas is very difficult.

There's definitely
some concern for their safety.

One hasn't got a helmet right there.

They spot the bike riders
fitting the description.

- Did you see which way he went?
- He went down that way.

They probably went up the wrong way.

That's a one way -
I can't go up that way.

SHE SIGHS

There's just so many little alleys
and ways they can get away.

Whisky three Oscar five.

The bike riders have escaped
the pursuing police.

So, they would take the risk
of going the wrong way

going up a one-way.
Obviously, we can't do that,

and so that's how
they get away from us.

It's very frustrating and irritating
because they always think...

They always think that
they're winning, until they lose.

There's a condo complex up here -
we'll go have a look up here,

see if we see the bike.

They come across a motorcyclist
at the side of the road.

- Oh, yeah, you're the one
that called?
- Yeah.

He was the witness
who first reported

the dangerous riding to the police.

They live here?
They live in the complex?

It's a chance for Officer Lisa
to gather more intel.

What I want to say is, first of all,
thank you very much.

What I'm trying to get
the people in the area to do

is call for service -
for police to come out.

Try to get a licence, cos once
you've got a licence plate,

we're able to track it
to an address,

we can see if the bike is stolen,

you know, we can see where
they live,

who resides, all that
type of information.

Alrighty.

- Yeah.

For now, Officer Lisa accepts defeat

in the search
for the dangerous riders.

Unfortunately, yeah,
this time they got away from us,

but we got some information.

We will catch them
and speak with them,

let them know how dangerous it is.

I always look for a silver lining,

and the silver lining in this
is that no-one was hurt.

Long service in the police can often
mean rising through the ranks.

For Acting Inspector Tiffany,
it's a big day.

After almost 20 years on the job,

today she's being promoted
to inspector.

I mean, this is my career.

19 years is not just a job,
and it means everything.

Today, there will be
a lot of colleagues here

and my family
who will watch me be promoted,

so I am very proud.

As well as her police colleagues,

Acting Inspector Tiffany's
sister, Tamisha,

will be playing a key role
in the ceremony.

Tiffany is the baby.

She's very determined and motivated,

so it just means a lot to us.
I'm so proud of her.

- You brought Mum?
- I brought our mum.

OK. Well, that's very important.

Sadly, four years ago,
the sisters lost their mother,

the one who originally encouraged
Acting Inspector Tiffany

to join the service.

Mum was our biggest cheerleader...

...so...

...she would've... she would've
been super proud of my sister.

She surprised me by bringing
a photo of our mum to the promotion,

which almost got me, but...

...too many colleagues around,

couldn't let a tear out.

I had to stay strong.

You and Daddy want to

Her father and her wife are both
here to share the moment.

Some of my team was even there.

It was awesome.
They really surprised me

and that was the best surprise
of the day.

It's a proud moment.

I knew that my sister
was going to cry.

She said she was not nervous,

I was nervous, and she can tell,

but I'm her baby,

and since our mother passed,
we've gotten even closer.

With a distinguished career already,

Officer Tiffany will now join the
Criminal Investigations Department

as a fully fledged inspector.

Professionally, the promotion
means that I get to continue

leading by example,

that I can continue
making a difference now

at a higher level of leadership,

and maybe inputting more ideas
that could come to fruition.

It's my job to mentor
younger officers too,

so I'm hoping that I can do that.

It was amazing.
It was a long time coming.

Some persons know
the hard road and obstacles

that I had to overcome to get there,

and, erm, it was worth it.

Especially to see
the look on my sister's face,

and my family that was there -
my wife - it was nice.

- Hi, I'm proud of you.
