in the market today.

It's a killer.

Is there extra pressure with it
being linked to a murder?

I'd say so.

at the border...

to import drugs into Bermuda.

..at the airport...

interest in your bags.

for the police.

- It's a canny view, innit?

Today, for officers in Bermuda,

a suspected drugs haul at a house...

..the discovery of a stolen
bike chop shop...

Oh, here, oh, aye, there you go.

Aye, have a look at that.

..and at the airport,
some suitcases come under suspicion.

The K9 has shown interest
in your bags.

Is there a reason why?

Not to my knowledge.

Brit Police Constable Jen Suter
is heading out on patrol

with Bermudian Police Constable
Tyler Kendall.

They've been partners
for almost a year.

When you're working 12 hour days
with someone, you definitely

build close relationships and you do
become friends outside of work,

and I do think that
that helps in work as well.

Just, like, you know, you have
that trust between partners.

You know, if you're going to
a job that potentially could be

violent, you need to know that
your partner will have your back.

Such trust under pressure
between them might soon be tested.

During a foot patrol
in capital city Hamilton,

they get a call to stop them
in their tracks.

A fellow officer,
who is at a property nearby,

has radioed for help.

Our other unit's asked us to assist.

We're not 100% sure what it is,
but...

Whether it's gonna be
a violent situation,

we don't know whether
there's a physical altercation.

For all we know, our officers could
be in a fight, we don't know.

We just don't know.

When you get called for backup,
everything races through your mind.

You ultimately think about whether
your colleagues are in danger,

getting there, basically,
as quickly as you possibly can.

Officer Jen radios the constables
on the ground directly,

desperate for more information.

Hi, Sabir, it's Suter.

Yeah, yeah, what are we...
What is it for?

Her colleague reports
that the situation

seems to be calming down,

but they are still required
to attend the property

as there's been
a big discovery.

12 plants?

OK, all right.

Yeah, we're making our way.

A large number of plants looking
suspiciously like cannabis,

found by Police Constable
Eddie Smith.

Today we were coming
to this particular residence

just to issue a court summons
for someone.

As we were coming into the yard,

we just explored on that side
of the property just to see

where the residents would be,
what door we would knock on.

As we did,
I just looked to the left

and discovered this cache of 12,
what appears to be, cannabis plants.

Then we heard a disturbance
from inside the residence,

what appeared to be directly
relating to us being here

and discovering this,
so we just called for some further

assistance in case whoever's
inside the residence comes out

and acts in a manner
that makes it unsafe for us.

With no further disturbance
from inside the property,

and nobody showing their face,

the drug squad arrive
to document and bag the haul.

The police lab will test it to
determine the type of cannabis

and whether it was likely
intended for recreational use.

Well, this is what we got,
about 12 pots.

And, so they've taken them out
the pots and put them in paper bags.

As for the homeowner, there's no
sign of them making an appearance.

I'm just, kinda, watching the front
entrance here and the window

out the back, just in case
anybody tries to join us.

Any unwelcome guests.

Obviously, they're
quite busy right now

going through all of the evidence

so, we're just trying
to prevent any...

anybody showing up by surprise.

In Bermuda, recreational use
and cultivation of cannabis

remains illegal,

though possession of up to 7g has
been de-criminalised.

Our experience teaches us
that it's cannabis,

we cannot say it's cannabis.

If this is cannabis
grown for recreational use,

the police will come down hard
on the cultivator,

once the tiresome bagging process
has been completed.

I'll explain my notes properly,
but it should make sense.

After hours of work in the summer
heat, the plant evidence,

bagged from the garden, is now
ready to go to the police lab.

This is our vehicle?

Yes.

We must arrest him in the back...

Tests there will show
whether or not it's cannabis

used for illegal highs.

If it is, the police will seek
a warrant to enter the property.

Then, in a dramatic turn
of events in the case,

the owner of the property
arrives by taxi.

So, this property
right over here is yours?

Unbelievably, the man appears
to be confessing to the police.

Just started saying, "I'm guilty,

"They're mine, I'm guilty.
I'm guilty."

And we were like, OK.

In the west of the island,
Police Constable Adam Thompson

and his partner,
Police Constable Melissa Butler,

have a busy shift ahead.

So, we'll nip up to
Daniel's Head, I believe.

- We've got an interview in town
at 1.00, I think.
- OK.

So, we'll have to start heading
down central at about midday,

- I believe.
- All right.
- Get going. Sounds good?
- Yep.

Geordie Officer Adam has been a
police officer for just over a year.

There is no place like home, right?

Newcastle's number one but

Bermuda is a very,
very close number two.

They're checking up on a resort
near to the police station

called Nine Beaches.

It is nine beaches because
there's nine beaches dotted around

this side of the island,

so there's plenty spaces
for the boats to park up,

and for people who are just coming
to enjoy a barbecue on a Sunday.

The area may be popular,
but the hotel here, Daniel's Head,

closed more than a decade ago.

I believe it was open
for a few years

after the hotel actually closed,

and they used to
rent it out to locals,

and then I think it just must've
went downhill from there.

What was once a paradise spot, now
attracts less desirable visitors.

It's, like, prevalent for a lot
of crime areas round there.

Look at that, man.

People just came up here
and thought it'd be fun

just to punch some holes
in some walls.

You get people squatting,
you get people trying to take

old bikes up there
and use it for a chop shop.

If you come out on the balcony,
aye, you can see

where there used to be
a swimming pool as well, man.

It still doesn't stop the locals

from having their fun though,
does it?

They'll take the stolen bikes,
dismantle them,

take all the parts
and then use them on other bikes.

Yeah, man, nothing.

Nothing to report here.

Officer Adam is checking
every building

for signs of criminal behaviour.

A lot of the criminal activity
that does happen in Bermuda

is on stolen, or defected bikes.

Be nice if you could find
a full bike, I think

that's what we'll be ideally
we're looking for but...

Oh, here.
Oh, aye, there you go.

Aye, have a look at that.

It's a stash of hundreds of items,

parts that Officer Adam can only
assume are from stolen bikes.

Don't wanna try and touch anything.

The bikes may also have been used
in committing crimes on the island,

and the parts could help
track down the perpetrators.

Unfortunately, what you do need
is obviously a licence plate

number would be the golden ticket,
but then you look for chassis

numbers, engine numbers,
and that just links the bike

to a certain person, or to a certain
vehicle, but with stuff like this,

it'll be very hard to identify
where it actually came from.

Officer Adam decides
to call in forensics.

Over half a million tourists
arrive in Bermuda every year.

Many by plane to
LF Wade International Airport,

located in the east of the island.

My primary role at the airport,
I feel, is just to provide

a high visibility policing presence,
to provide public reassurance.

The terminal has been the beat
for Police Constable Paul Watson

for nearly a decade.

I like the old traditional uniform.

I like wearing my Bobby helmet,
the uniform shorts.

And I still love chatting to people.

Meet them on a daily basis...

- Where you from?
- I don't know.

You don't know?

You came in on British Airways, so
you must be from England, are you?

- No.
- Scotland?

Dunno.

Wales? So where are you from?

- Blackpool.
- Blackpool?

..and I think that goes a long way
to have a positive image

of Bermuda and the Bermuda police.

Over the years, Officer Paul
has developed a strong instinct

for spotting criminal behaviour
at the airport,

particularly those
engaged in smuggling.

Just the general body language
of people.

Some people are very bold

and very brash

when they are doing things wrong.

They will actually draw attention
to themselves very, very easily.

And then, the other side of the coin
is when people are very introvert

and they look away from you,
and just that sixth sense

on somebody's body language
that can make you feel there is

something wrong, or that they are
certainly worth a second look at.

Officer Paul works closely
with customs to try to stop drugs

being smuggled into Bermuda.

A packed flight has just
landed from New Jersey.

Customs K9 is out on the baggage
belt, so we'll just monitor

the customs K9 checking the
bags and see if they get any alerts.

The sniffer dog can check
a whole plane load of luggage

for traces of illegal drugs and
other items in a matter of minutes.

The dog stops at a silver suitcase,

alerting its handler
to something suspicious.

In total,
the dog identifies three cases,

registered to two passengers
travelling together.

It could be a significant
breakthrough for law enforcement.

When I'm there and a dog flags
and alerts to a bag,

there's always going to be
some kind of rush,

whether this is going to be just
a teeny, teeny, little spliff,

or whether it's going to be
the suitcase that's full

of half a million dollars
of cannabis.

Officers Jen and Tyler
are in the garden of a residential

property, from which 12
large cannabis-like plants

have been recovered for testing
at the police lab,

when the homeowner turns up,
confessing to everything.

So, this property
right over here is yours?

That one.

I think that in his mind,
there is absolutely nothing wrong

with what he does,

and that is a very common
view point here in Bermuda.

But while the possession
of a small amount of cannabis

for recreational use has been
decriminalised on the island,

it's use and cultivation
remains firmly illegal.

The police place him under caution,
but delay his arrest

until they've searched his property,

knowing they have
his full cooperation.

Just for now, just while
we're trying to figure out

what's going to happen, OK?

But I just want you to know
that you are under caution, OK?

It makes him aware that his words
of confession might later be

relied upon in court.

I'm just going to caution you and
tell you that anything you say...

can be given in evidence,
and used in evidence, OK?

But the man knows the drill.

So, I don't know whether he just
knows the process, knows that

he'd been caught and was just like,

"OK, rather than arguing it,
I might as well just go with it."

A warrant is issued
for the property search.

The man insists that any cannabis
found is only for his personal use,

and that he's no big time dealer.

Well, we appreciate you
being so forthcoming.

Well, you walked...

You saw a police car,
and you walked straight up to it.

But what's recovered is looking
substantially over

the legal quantity for personal use.

Just an evidence bag, so it can
just go in the back of the car.

There we go.

Now we're cooking.

Because they're going to need to
bag, 'em.

- They're going to need to be
bagged properly anyway.
- Ah.

- It's going to smell like weed.
- Yes, it is.

With room in the patrol car
at a premium, maybe the man

isn't being as truthful about
the situation as he claims.

Yeah, those bags, so...

For personal use.

We did end up finding some
substantial quantities

of the plant inside the
freezers as well, but with

the amount that was there, it is
a question that's in the back of

your mind, is it really for personal
use, or is there more going on here?

The man is finally arrested
for the cultivation of cannabis.

Taking the last empty seat
in the back of the patrol car,

he's transported to custody.

He'll have the chance
to be interviewed,

where he can give his account
of what's happened,

and answer to that offence.

Officer Adam has called in

junior crime scene investigator
Tianna Mullen.

The hope is, she can link
some of the stolen bike parts

discovered in the derelict hotel
to criminal activity on the island.

- I know this area has been reported
to be a chop shop...
- Right.

..for bikes, so people are bringing
stolen bikes here, chopping them up

and then using them, well, as
we all know, for criminal behaviour.

23-year-old Officer Tianna
has worked for the service

for more than a year.

I love working in my unit.

I love the people that I work with,

I love that it's
something new every day.

You know, I come to work, you don't
know what you're expecting.

It keeps me on my toes.

Like, there's no
licence plate numbers,

there's no chassis numbers
or anything.

It's through here.

OK.

As you can see,
they've got a little, er...

Pretty organised, nicely laid out.

..their own little store going on.

The parts may've been
here for a while,

but Officer Tianna is hopeful
there's some evidence intact.

It's quite often that we link
the stolen vehicles back to a thief

because they leave
fingerprints everywhere.

Bunch of gloves on the floor here,
yeah, so it looks like...

well, to be fair, they're fingerless
gloves as well, right?

So, they're not really the
smartest of criminals, are they?

A lot of the times
people steal bikes

and they're not wearing gloves.

Or they're wearing gloves to steal
it, and then they take 'em off,

so I got a lot of fingerprints
on the mirrors.

But there are few mirrors here,

and some of the other surfaces might
be unsuitable for print taking.

- A lot of the surfaces
are also matte...
- Right.

- ..which make it really hard
to get fingerprints as well.
- OK.

But some of the smooth surfaces,
I can definitely dust for those.

With fingerprints, as long as
something is stored correctly,

if it's not a humid place,

then you can pretty much get
fingerprints whenever,

but the smoother, the better.

But with the high humidity, the task
of pulling up prints is a challenge.

- You see how it's just smudging?
- Yeah.

That's from the humidity in here.

It's not looking like
we're going to get anything.

Sadly, no forensic evidence
was collected, but Officer Adam

can report the location, a site
of potential criminal activity...

Well, at least you know
that this is...

the area, right, so that's why we...

Yeah, you might patrol one day
and catch the people in the act.

Well, that's it, yeah.

..in the hope that next time,
they'll get lucky.

At Bermuda International Airport,

two passengers have been pulled
into the secondary search area

for their baggage to be examined
by Customs Officer Natalie Pitcher.

- Are you his guardian?
- Yes.

- My grandson.
- Grandson?

I'm going to ask you
a few questions,

- and then I'll explain
what has happened, OK?
- OK.

The passengers are a grandmother
and grandson returning to Bermuda

after a short trip to the US.

So what was the purpose
of your travel?

Where was the game?

In New Jersey?

Who were they playing?

- Who were they playing?
- Mm-hm.

- West Ham.
- West Ham.
- Who won?

- United, of course!
- Nice!

- Is that your team?
- Yeah.
- Nice.

OK, the K9 has shown
interest in your bags.

Is there a reason why the K9
would show interest in the bags?

Not to my knowledge.

So, they have three suitcase
and a plastic bag with stuff in it,

so I will check all of 'em.

The woman's bags are searched fast,
then placed in the security scanner.

The majority of passengers
are actually probably quite scared

because they want to wonder why
the dog is alerted to their bag.

I know if I was every pulled
through, I would be.

And this is fine.

The woman's luggage
gets the all clear.

- We're good?
- Yeah, you're good.

Thank God for that.

It is perfectly fine,
you're good to go.

Now it's the turn of the grandson
to have his suitcase searched

for illegal drugs.

And you said this has got
mostly your stuff in it?

Yeah, this is...

Any personal items you don't want
pulled out or anything,

or you're good?

- Should be good.
- Should? OK.

Same thing, I'm just going to
run this through as well, OK?

If something is found,
he'll be arrested.

Yeah, it's good.

But nothing illegal found
in the grandson's suitcase either.

Both passengers are free to go.

- Thanks a lot.
- You're very welcome.

Welcome home.

It's not uncommon for the customs
K9 to alert to luggage

in which no illegal drugs
are found.

Often, those bags, at some point,
have come into contact with luggage

that has contained
a controlled substance.

Officer Natalie's duty is done.

Still, it's been nice for her to
have met some fellow sports fans.

Ah, you'll find a lot that go to
England to go watch a lot of

football out there, or soccer,
so it is quite common.

They're quite good spirited.

Now, the rugby,
that's a different story!

Officer Eddie Smith
has brought into custody

the man arrested for
cultivating cannabis at his home.

Thank you, man.

The suspect has been fully
cooperative until now,

but the rule in custody
of first come, first served,

means the suspect is beginning
to lose his cool.

The charging process will come.

Right now, you're here because
out there it's busy

and the jail Sergeant can only deal
with one person at a time.

One person at a time

So, until she finishes processing
them, we are on hold in here.

- All right.
- Yeah?

With temperatures outside
hitting 30 degrees and no air-con,

Officer Eddie Smith
is also feeling the pressure.

Why you working me
without any AC, man?

Give me a break, it's hot.

Well, have a relax.

Do you need any water?

Yeah, can you get me
a glass of water please?

I'll sort it out for you.

OK, you drink it with
the handcuffs on, or you need me

to take, 'em off? All right.

Mmm, we don't want to, er,
dehydrate yourself.

Just at the yellow line there.

Eventually, the man gets
his turn at the custody desk.

How are you?

He's charged and bailed to
appear in court at a later date.

You have the right
to have someone informed

that you're detained.

You have the right to consult
privately with an independent lawyer

either in person
or on the telephone.

The man's still openly
admitting to a crime.

- What do I do, just sign?
- Yes.

Cool.

After forensic testing of the
seized plants from the man's home,

they're taken to a secret location
on the other side of the island,

along with drugs from countless
other arrests in Bermuda,

to be destroyed.

- It should be 29993.
- Mm-hm.

- And it's 4450.
- Yes.

First, every item is cross checked
against the inventory,

so that nothing goes missing.

- 4445.
- Yes.

Detective Constable Damon Hollis
knows how vital this is.

It's a really good process
because, I mean,

my whole police career we've heard
the rumours that, you know, police

take drugs and they end up back on
the street, and I can verify that in

my 30 years of policing, every item
that we take gets destroyed.

Independent persons are brought in
to verify what has to be destroyed

as a very vigorous
audit process.

48034, and it's 8427.

They have to ensure what
goes into the bag

and what is in the bag
is in the bag,

and then that process will continue
to the point of destruction.

Along with the small seizures
of cannabis like that

found at the man's house,

Superintendent Arthur Glassford
is today in charge of destroying

a haul of drugs with street
value of over a million dollars.

In addition to our normal drugs of
cocaine and cannabis, this time

he had gummies which contain THC,
which are illegal in Bermuda,

and we also had actual
drug equipment

such as grinders and so on.

The auditing complete,

the vans are loaded to take
the seized drugs to the incinerator.

It's the riskiest part
of the process.

The timings and when we're going
to do it has to be, obviously,

kept close to our chest
because we're thinking

of the security
of the officers.

Fortunately for us,
it's not that far but, obviously,

every time we're outside
of the compound, it's a risk.

At the end of the day,
it's still millions of dollars

worth of drugs.

Small bags but big profit to those
who are willing to risk it.

The convoy arrive safely
at the secure waste facility.

So, what happens from here,
obviously, the independent auditor

is still with us,
our Police Superintendent is there,

and they verify that
what they've audited already,

or what went into the van

is also what comes out and what goes
into the hopper to be destroyed.

Finally, the drugs are loaded
into the incinerator,

then covered in tons of rubbish,

and at a temperature of
1,000 degrees, go up in smoke.

It's a good feeling
when drugs are destroyed

or drugs are out of the community.

Most people don't realise
the detrimental effects of these

substances until it's too late,
until it affects families.

Sometimes we have to protect
people from themselves,

and this process
is what does that.

Ensuring that our streets
stay as safe as best we can.

Today was a good day.
