Deep in the forest, in a tiny hut
lived the Fairy and the Hunter.

and she stroked his blanket.

“The fox comes down
from the wall at night.”

but the Fairy held his hand

and took him over to the stuffed fox
and lifted him up.

Honey saw the fox from close up.

It was motionless,

and it looked like it was laughing.

They even stroked it.

The Fairy changed his sheets.

Honey sat down on the bed,

and the world started to spin around.

He hadn’t slept for days,

so he flopped down on the cool sheet

and fell fast asleep.

Honey tried to sleep but he couldn’t.

Then the Fairy started
to sit in front of the TV in the day,

and she sat closer and closer
so she could see.

She sometimes laughed out loud,

other times she sat in silence
and listened.

It was like someone was talking to her
from there.

That’s mental!

Honey thought up all kinds of things
to cheer the Fairy up.

She drew her a tulip once,
and showed it to her.

The Fairy thanked her for it quietly,

but Honey saw her throw it away
the next day.

Honey played hide and seek
with her once,

but when Honey hid,

the Fairy didn’t come looking for him.

The Fairy wasn’t interested in Honey.

Poor Honey! No one loved him!

But he wasn’t sad.

He thought up all kinds of things.

He imagined that
the Fairy wasn’t his real mum,

but she was a robot
that looked just like his mum.

And his real mum
had been kidnapped by aliens.

But the rabid fox didn’t want

The little girl wasn’t
scared of it anymore.

the rabid fox’s ghost
had nothing to do with it.

He heard the kids climbing trees
and playing outside in the afternoons.

For the first few days
they shouted into his garden,

inviting him to play.

Then the Fairy would go outside
and say in a kindly voice:

“Honey is in hospital,

and he won’t be home
for a very long time.”

The Fairy took food down to him
every day

but she never spoke to him.

Honey had the feeling that
something was going to happen,

and it did.

He heard a strange noise
that night.

He pulled the rags out of his ears,

and then he could clearly hear
the sound of crashing and banging

and arguing.

The Hunter yelled:

“I didn’t leave because of him,
I left because of you!”

Then all of a sudden
the cellar door opened

and there stood the Hunter.

He scooped Honey up in his arms

Honey saw the Fairy.

She was down on her hands and knees,

and she glanced at Honey
with a glint in her eyes.

She smiles,

and said in a tinkling voice:

“This is all because of you, Honey.”

This made the Hunter shout,
but Honey could no longer hear him,

because she’d slipped out
of the front door.

He took one last look back.

He saw the Hunter come out of the house
and shout his name.

Honey ran and ran as fast as he could.

He hated the Fairy, the Hunter,

the other kids, the forest,

and he even hated the stars.

He went into the city.

He slept in cellars during the day,
and only came out at night.

He liked the Moon.

Sunlight blinded him.

And anyway,
there are fewer people about at night

and night people are different.

He sometimes slipped into
people’s houses

and took what he needed.

But then he got caught,
and they took him to an orphanage.

At first he hated the walls
and the bunk beds.

He wanted to sleep in the cellar.

But then he made a couple of friends,
and everything got easier.

Then he saw the Hunter one day.

Honey hardly recognised him.

His clothes and eyes had always been
so clean and clear before.

But now his clothes were mucky,

and his eyes looked empty.

They really didn’t know
what to say to each other.

The Hunter came to see him
a couple more times after that,

and then he disappeared.

Honey wasn’t all that bothered.

He only looked after one treasure.

It was his only treasure.

The most important thing to him was that
he wasn’t frightened of anything.
