(Helen) 'Spenser.'

(male #1) 'Let's go.'

- Anybody, still up there? - No.

[coughing]

[explosion]

[groans]

Where are ya?

[grunts]

'Where are ya?'

[Spenser grunts]

Chief, we're missing a man on ladder 17.

'Callahan.'

I'm going in. Come on.

(male #2) 'Open them wide.'

(Spenser) "The foxes have holes

I couldn't remember, if it was from Luke or John

but it looked like I'd just joined a very exclusive club.

It was Mathew, and reading the rest of the chapter

before I fell asleep, helped me get over the feeling I had

when I watched almost everything I own

go up in smoke.

I tried to drown the rest of my thoughts in beer

that never really works.

And the alcohol in my blood didn't make an August night

in Boston any cooler.

[alarm buzzing]

[knocking on door]

(Frank) 'Spenser.'

'Hey, Spenser.'

Can you believe this heat?

Hey, I went by your apartment, it, uh..

...got a little hot there last night too, I guess, huh?

Why don't you come on in, sergeant.

Air conditioning. This is new.

you gotta keep up a first class front.

you can get the guy who torched your apartment to come by

So far all we've established is that you did not come by here

for a social drink, we have yet to divulge

just what the hell it is you're doing.

Part of my work is solving mysteries

but I didn't have a clue as to what I could for Marty Quirk

on a Sunday morning that he couldn't do for himself.

You know a federal prosecutor named Farrell?

Yeah, Meghan Farrell.

Law and order freak.

Wouldn't mind being the first lady governor

of the Commonwealth.

She has just been appointed deputy chief

to an organized-crime strike force.

How nice for her.

She's got a witness that's giving secret testimony

to the grand jury, she needs a body guard for 24 hours.

You don't have the man power?

Farrell doesn't trust the department.

She says our standards aren't high enough

and she's not gonna lose her witness

because somebody gets to a cop.

Doesn't sound like she is after your vote, Marty.

You smell smoke?

My building burned down last night.

Well, I've been asked to go on a line, Spenser

As sleepy as I was, the only thing I could see

So, I gave him a call and cut him in for half my action.

I figured, he might be interested

since he just bought a $50,000 car.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chattering]

Mr. Spenser.

The scotch eggs, bulk sausages, fine, but it has to be thin.

Then, you really should paint it with a little more of the egg

before you roll them in breadcrumbs.

That's funny, I've never enjoyed it.

So, while I might be only 24 hours..

but I'm not ashamed of my own.

This case can start a groundswell that could

carry me straight into the statehouse.

is read the owner's manual.

Mass General is the biggest hospital in Boston

and the best in the country.

It was founded in 1811 but it couldn't open

until we won the war of 1812.

It was comforting to know it was right down the block.

before it started smelling normal to me.

And I needed a couple of hours sleep

to keep my brain from turning to steel wool.

or when we made the delivery the next day.

But I was still a little anxious about being away

from the condo for very long.

(Spenser) 'Closer to the phone.'

- How the hell do you know? - Wild guess.

Harry, you're sure the only blood

in the room is by the door?

[phone rings] I got it.

Spenser.

Yeah, Herb, give it to me.

- Paul. - Lieutenant.

(Martin) 'You print him already?'

One of your boys did, lieutenant.

I could have made the call from the condo

but I didn't think Quirk and Belson would appreciate it.

(man over phone) 'Bay State Cab, dispatch office.'

(Spenser) 'Yeah, this is Sergeant Belson, Homicide.'

'I need some information on a fare to the condo'

'across Mass General at about 10:00 this morning.'

(man over phone) 'Hey, you guys know I can't give that stuff on a phone.'

(Spenser) 'I think maybe we got a bad connection here, pal.'

'I want the cabbie's name and number and I'll take yours too.'

- 'Hey, listen--' - 'I am listening.'

(Spenser on phone) 'But I'm not hearing anything.'

'Now, maybe you'd rather have a unit pick you up'

'and bring you downtown.'

'It should only take four or five hours of your time.'

- Joe Fontana. - Yeah.

Spenser, field rep, Bay State Cab.

Billy the dispatch test tells me you picked up a fare

at nine o'clock this morning.

At that bus station, dropped her off to the condos

over by Mass General.

- Yeah. - Took you 50 minutes, Joe.

Now, that's a ten minute fare at best

that time of day what happened?

- Look, pal, I don't hustle. - I just got a job to do.

Just like you, only different, you know what I mean?

Now, I figured she had you make a stop or two, right?

Yeah.

(Spenser) 'Okay, okay, so just help me'

'get the record right, that's all.'

(Joe) 'Alright, two stops.'

'First one was a travel agency on Commonwealth'

'but she didn't get out.'

'She just had me double parked'

'so she could look in the window.'

'Hey, I told her it was her nickel.'

'I'd park all day if that's what she wanted.'

'We only sat a couple minutes though.'

(Spenser) 'You said two stops. Where else?'

- 'The Ritz.' - 'The Ritz?'

(Spencer) 'How long were you there?'

(Joe) 'Thirty five minutes maybe, forty tops.'

Taxi, taxi please.

Hey, Spenser, what did you do? Change jobs?

- Ah, it's a loner. - 'Yeah.'

Cab driver said he dropped her here this morning.

She spent about a half an hour inside and left.

Blonde, good figure, about 30-32.

She was wearing a red dress.

Would have been around 9:15 this morning.

Ah, you mean Mrs. Simmons.

- Simmons? - Yeah.

She was in and out of here in a cab this morning

but she's been with us about three days.

She stayed here?

Yeah, checked in Thursday, checked out today.

She checked out once she took the cab.

No, she checked out about an hour and a half ago.

Was anybody with her?

No. Is she in trouble?

Maybe not as much as me.

Jackie Hurley was from South Boston.

He spoke the truth.

And the truth he spoke to me was that he had delivered

the woman from the Ritz to the airport

and put her on a plane for San Francisco.

The woman that the doorman thought was the woman I thought

was the witness Martin Quirk thought I was guarding.

That can only mean one thing..

...there were two women.

The one that stayed at the Ritz and then got on the plane

to San Francisco and the one with Hawk right now.

I didn't know who was who

or what was what, but I was pretty sure

that the woman with Hawk

wasn't the real Angela Zemeckis.

Time to find Hawk.

[phone ringing]

- Hello - 'Suz.'

Spenser, where are you?

I can't talk now, did Hawk call?

Yes, he gave me a number. Spenser, are you alright?

Yeah, I'm fine, listen..

so I figured I could get through to him a little later.

It was time to find something else out now.

But I couldn't do anything about that at the moment.

I lost him.

Harvard University and Cambridge

just across the Charles River.

You'd think with all that brain power around me

some of it would rub off.

But I was still stumped.

The two thugs I deposited

on Quirk's doorstep for questioning

weren't going to supply any answers.

After all, all they had to admit to

was following a guy who was lost.

I did have a fix on Hawk though.

I figured he left the condo and caught the Red Line

across the Charles.

Kendall Square is the first stop.

And it's close to a first class hotel.

It did surprise me that the number Hawk gave Susan

was the number for the hotel.

Hawk always goes first class.

I wasn't sure how to bring up

what had happened to his new car just yet.

I figured I better let that slide for now.

You sure that doorman's not jiving you?

I talked to the limo driver too, Jackie Hurley.

He's straight.

you'll learn not to trust anybody.

Quirk didn't get anything from the two men I gave him

but he didn't have to.

The fact that they were following me while the real

Angela Zemeckis was taking off for San Francisco

gave me a pretty good idea whose payroll they were on.

And what I had to do to prove it.

You said protect her.

'I didn't know it had to be from you.'

You're out of line, Spenser.

That's why I never fit in your department, remember?

I'll have your tail for kidnapping.

I'll watch you sweat attempted murder.

With what for evidence?

You have a prosecutor in the room.

'Why don't I try my case on her?'

If charges are goin' to be made, they might as well be made here.

You already have a deposition.

All the connections, names, numbers

you want the public to have.

You don't want Angela Zemeckis in that grand jury session.

And why is that?

Because if she goes in..

...the defense can tear down what you wanna build up.

(Spenser) 'You want the statehouse.'

'You want city hall.'

You run on law and order.

Point the finger at people in power, scare tactics.

Backed up with a dead woman's deposition.

You present the perfect evidence.

Evidence that people can deny but can't disprove

'because they can't cross examine.'

You get elected. You run on her coat tails.

Everybody remembers how tough you were

in going after organized crime.

Nobody remembers about an unsolved hit on a witness.

Or the death of an ex-cop

you tag as irresponsible.

So you tell Marty Quirk that somebody wants to kill her.

And you contract for a murder.

You have a vivid imagination, Mr. Spenser.

What about hard evidence?

I've got Angela Zemeckis.

Imagine her telling the people of Massachusetts

you were the only ones who knew where she was supposed to be.

That doesn't prove anything.

'I'm just taking a leaf out of Mrs. Farrell's book.'

You don't have to prove anything.

You just point your finger and bring in the press.

Oh, you might not fall.

But you both can forget about climbing any higher.

You do know how preposterous

all that would sound outside this room.
