One of the most dangerous drugs
in the market today.

It's a killer.

Is there extra pressure with it
being linked to a murder?

I'd say so.

..catching criminals
at the border...

for suspicion of conspiracy
to import drugs into Bermuda.

The K9 has shown interest
in your bags.

..and on the water.

..this is peak season
for the police.

- That's a canny view, innit?
- Mm-hm.

Today in Bermuda,
a moped on the run.

Vehicle failing to stop.
I'm safely following at this time.

The Drugs Squad are on the case
with a suspicious package.

I get very excited
when I see a print like this.

And the K9 Unit are on tracking
training to sniff out crime.

He's got his head down now,
which means he's picking it up.

Come on, find her.

Behind Bermuda's picture
perfect tourist hot spots

is an underbelly
of serious drug crime,

and tackling it is one of the
island's biggest policing problems.

Anywhere you've got people
and things

that are entering into Bermuda,
it's a route in for illicit drugs.

And we work hand in hand
with customs

who have primary responsibility
for ensuring our borders.

But obviously those
more serious investigations,

we are directly leading them.

We've got a drugs unit,
narcotics, drug detection dogs,

a K9 unit. We've got, you know,
a roads policing unit.

I'm gonna search you and the car.

You absolutely need the full range
of policing skills

in order to do these more
serious or complex investigations.

And in charge of uncovering what's
being trafficked into the country

and taking down the drug gangs
is Detective Constable Damon Hollis.

I am Bermudian born and bred.
At least my parents tell me.

I've been a member
of the Bermuda Police Service

for the last 34 years.

Now I find myself within the
Specialist Investigations Drug unit.

I started because I didn't know
what I wanted to do with my life,

and here I am, 34 years later.

I still don't know
what I want to do with my life,

but, you know,
committed to serving.

Today, Detective Damon is partnered

with Detective Constable
O'Neil Swaby.

Our general role is to suffocate

the organised criminality
within Bermuda.

Our aim is to take the profit
out of criminality.

And they already have
a busy morning lined up.

We were informed
by our partners, customs.

They intercepted
a suspicious package.

So they're heading out on a high
alert to the east of the island

to intercept the package currently
being held at a courier company.

If it's suspicious enough,
they'll alert us,

and then we will do
the investigation

and take it to a secure facility

to prove or to extract whatever
is in that package.

If customs are correct
and the package

holds a controlled substance,

intercepting it is essential to
stop it reaching Bermuda's streets.

Unfortunately, we tend
to see the effects

of anything entering the market
almost immediately.

Bermuda is a small community,

so that drug can go
from being picked up

by a person this afternoon

to out in the community.

So the more that we seize
and the better we get at it,

the less impact that hopefully
will have on our community.

They currently have
limited information

about the suspicious package.

- Good day, all!
- Good morning!

Basically, customs is responsible
for the borders.

In their interception,

We'll get a brief from them
as to what was found

and what they suspect.

So this is a shipment
that arrived from Canada

and it was reported
to be beauty supplies.

The box was emptied
of the supplies

and the shipment
was still quite heavy.

So the officer ran it
through the X-ray

and saw four square shaped objects

still contained within the seal,
the sides of the boxes.

She probed further

and found that there were packages
of contraband

concealed in all four sides.

And we'll take it in now,
and the investigation starts.

So we leave from here
and we will probe it.

We'll see what we have
and process it

and get it ready to go to the
government analysts, to be analysed.

As the forensic process begins,

Detective Damon's
34 years of experience

tells him they're on to something.

Customs has told us their
suspicions.

By virtue of the method that
they've used to try to secrete it,

um...it's illegal.

It's the start of a 12-hour shift
in the centre of the island.

British Police Constable
Holly Lavigne-Smith

is on patrol with her long-time
friend and colleague,

Police Constable Krislyn Lambert.

Random question, but I feel like
it's still fun to ask.

Like, what did you want to be
when you grew up?

So I always wanted to be
a police officer.

I met PC Krislyn Lambert
when I was a reserve police officer,

and we both joined
as reserves together,

and we did the course together

and we built this,
like, really special friendship.

I also really wanted to be a bin man
or a bin woman.

- What's that?
- You know, the people, the trash.

- Oh...!
- A trash...
- I'm so sorry!

I was so confused,
but, yes, a bin woman.

Coming from the UK,
she finds me exotic, which I love!

- You know, when you hang off
the back of a trash cart.
- Yes.

That's the part
that attracts you to the job?

Hanging off the back on the truck?

I'm not gonna lie, yeah.

We always spoke about, can you
imagine being on shift together?

- And so here we are doing it.
- So that's really a dream come true.

It's like a dream come true.

It's been a year since
Officer Holly finished her training,

and she's grown into the role...

Things have definitely changed
since the last time you met me.

I would say I'm a lot
more confident,

and I hope my colleagues
would agree with that.

I believe in myself a lot more.

..and the first traffic stop
is an opportunity

for Officer Holly
to show how far she's come.

Let me just talk to this man.
He's on his phone.

He's gonna drive off.

Sir, can I just speak to you?

You were on your phone
while you're moving.

But despite her approach,

the suspect continues
ordering his lunch.

I'm a police officer. Yeah.

My name is PC 2608 Lavigne-Smith.

I'll just have a chat with you.

I know that you were pulling over
to answer your phone,

but you have to pull over first,
you know?

And I don't want to hit you
off your bike.

You know how many people
we scrape off the road

for using their phone?
Like, honestly.

So I'm not going to give you
a ticket.

I just want to try
and warn you of the dangers, OK?

Officer Holly soon has the situation
under control.

I do think people underestimate me
just because of my voice,

and also, like, my persona
can come across quite innocent.

OK. You understand?

OK, thank you, sir.

Well, you can you can
order your dumpling now!

Thank you, sir.

He was very lucky
not to get a ticket.

I walked away trying not to laugh,
I think.

So he got lucky that day.

And she is continually
upping her policing skillset.

I just actually passed
my standard driving response.

This is my one of
my first shifts driving,

and it's lovely to do it
with Miss Lambert.

Holly and I have
definitely blossomed

into this beautiful friendship
that we have.

I'm very proud of Holly.

Just like, you just started,

and she's just so eager
to learn everything.

And her new skills are about
to face their first real test,

as Officer Krislyn spots
a man running a red light.

Oh, can we stop them?
Because that was a pedestrian.

But the moped is failing to stop,
and officer Holly must act quickly.

SIREN WAILS

We're trying to pull over this
gentleman for crossing a pedestrian.

With people walking across it.

And we just want to have
a word with him.

It was nothing safe
about that situation.

So obviously we're going to want
to pull you over

to, like, speak to you.

Like, did you not see those
pedestrians crossing?

Because we were
in front of him at the time.

Vehicle failing to stop.

I'm safely following at this time.

Where are we? Friswells Road.

Hot on the riders' tail,
Officer Holly calls it in.

10-4, he failed to stop.

He went east on Friswells Road.

He's wearing a white helmet,
a grey T-shirt.

- Is that him?
- It looks like it.

10-4, I have eyes on him.

Newbie driver Officer Holly
will need to keep a steady head

to keep him in sight.

He's travelling south
on Border Lane South.

On the east of the island,

Detectives Damon and O'Neil
from the Drug Investigation Unit

are leading the response

to a suspicious package
intercepted by customs.

Detective Damon is acting
on information

that an unknown substance
is hidden in the box's lining.

We will start a forensic process.

So our forensic team
will come in and assist us

as we process it further

to see what we have
and what we're dealing with.

And arriving to start
the detailed forensic work

is junior crime scene investigator
Tianna Mullan.

I actually took a forensic
science class in high school,

and that's when I realised
that this is what I wanted to do.

When I first started,

I primarily focused
on smaller cases,

but now I've actually
been doing bigger cases

as the lead investigator.

I love working in my unit.

I like the fact that
it's something new every day.

It keeps me on my toes
and I love the people

that I work with,
so it keeps me very intrigued.

Good morning!

- Hello.
- How are you?
Ready to get started.

I got a call from the drug unit
about 30 minutes ago

saying that they just
retrieved a package

with suspected drugs from a courier,

and our role is to meet the drug
unit at the property management unit

and forensically process
the exhibits.

That goes for photography,
DNA, fingerprinting.

Just trying to get a profile
on the suspect.

I'm gonna get some scene suits.
What sizes do we want?

Something that will fit me.
One of those big ones, please.

2X?

Biggest I have is extra large.

Yeah. Good luck with that!

Time to suit up, yes.

Generally, I have a great difficulty
in finding my size.

So I'm going to think thin thoughts.

Very good. Big marshmallow.

It is tight.

What we have is a box.

Custom says that it
is embedded in the inside

of the box itself,
sandwiched between.

Let's see what's fingerprintable -
and then, as we get in,

- if it's anything for DNA.
- OK.

Detective Damon and Officer Tianna
carefully record every detail.

Vital steps in building the case.

I'm just going to take a picture
in this bag first.

So what we discovered,
as customs described,

as a box within a box, bearing tape.

Detective Damon
needs to carefully open it

and reveal the true extent
of the content.

In 30 years, have I seen it all? No.

I'm pretty sure
that come tomorrow,

I will see something
that I've never seen before.

Just as hard as we're working
to discover,

someone's working to get their
illicit goods to whatever port.

They first unpack bottles
of beauty products...

I was looking, these are
nice surfaces to fingerprint.

..which could hold vital evidence.

I get very excited
when I see a print like this.

You can see three
full fingers there.

One, two, three.

Clearly they were not gloved up.

Whoever it was.

Now we just hope that they're
already in the system.

Sometimes I do feel like
I'm in a crime drama

because everybody assumes,
because they watch CSI,

that they know what's going on.

But it's nothing like
the TV shows at all.

At all.

OK, we can move on.

With fingerprints secured,

Detective Damon can turn to the task

of what might be hidden
inside the lining of the box.

It is ready.

You could definitely tell
that it's something in it,

because everybody's dealt
with a brown box by now.

You can actually feel
the difference in weight.

Is something in here
a controlled substance,

or is it something else?

For Officer Tianna,

joining the police service
was a natural route to take.

You want a cookie? Yes.

Her mum,
Police Constable Robin MacNab,

has spent the past ten years
working in the K9 dog unit.

Even though you've grown up
with me being in the police,

you understand more...

..you know, it's a career,

but it's also, policing
becomes like your whole life.

After she joined the police,

she's just evolved into such
a confident and happy person.

I'm definitely inspired by my mum
a lot.

My mum before the police
was very quiet, very reserved,

and now I just feel like she's
stepped into this whole new woman.

I really like hearing about the jobs
that you do.

I find it really,
really interesting.

As a parent,
all you want is your child to be,

at the end of the day,
happy and self-sufficient.

And right now,
she's both those things.

It's pure pride because
she's worked so hard.

Policing careers have been
in their family for generations.

Your great-grandfather
was a police officer,

and then we have cousins
that are in the police.

So I guess especially within
our immediate family,

there's a lot of support.

And there's another
supportive family member

in Officer Robin's life.

Only this one has four legs.

Meet Roni, a K9 officer
with the Bermuda Police Service.

He's a Shepherd Malinois,
but he's also very, very cute,

I guess because he has
like a fluffy Shepherd face.

A lot of times, I'm trying
to be serious and people,

he comes out of the car
and they go, "Aww!"

I'm like, "No, he's ferocious!"

Today he's on training duty,
putting his nose to the test

to sniff out drugs
and track suspects when it matters.

We are at Carolina Bay.
It's a nice, big, open area

that I like to bring Roni

so that he can sort of
run around, free play,

but then I can also do
tracking training

and I can hide drugs for him,
all sorts of stuff -

and then usually at the end
I take him swimming,

which he really likes.

Being able to come in every day
and work with animals

and be able to train them
and exercise them

as well as do the work,
it's definitely a dream job of mine.

The family connection continues

as Officer Robin's youngest
daughter, Sammy,

is on hand to help.

So I've got a volunteer
tracker today,

which is my daughter,

and she's gonna pretend as if she's
someone who's run off from her bike,

and then Roni and I are going
to attempt to track her smell

and find her.

So, Sammy, if you start over here,

when I see you disappear,
that's when I'll start.

- OK.
- All right?
So just at the entrance.

With more than a hundred bikes
stolen each month on the island,

this exercise could prove crucial...

You know, you're running
from the law.

..and will help lead officers

straight to a hidden suspect
or missing person.

He hasn't done a track
in a long time,

so we'll see how it goes.

Officer Robin gives Roni the scent
and he's straight on the trail,

using his nose to track down
exactly where it leads...

He's got his head down now,
which means he's picking it up.

..but even the most
dedicated investigator

must answer the call of nature...

..and Roni's nose
doesn't miss a thing,

as he successfully leads
Officer Robin

straight to the tracker.

Good boy!

today's session is a success.

for the challenges
on Bermuda's streets.

In the central area of the island,

officers Holly and Krislyn
are closely following

a moped driver who ran
a red light and kept on going.

I have eyes on him.
He failed to stop.

He went east on Friswells Road.

He's wearing a white helmet,
a grey T-shirt.

RADIO CHATTER

I'm not following.

Despite Officer Holly's
best efforts,

he's given them the slip.

The gentleman decided
that he did not want to stop.

We're not giving chase,
but if I can get eyes on him,

I can then radio it through

and one of our ARV units,
or PSU or another unit

who are advanced drivers,
can give chase.

It's just so dangerous
to chase a bike.

So I passed my driver training
a few months ago.

It doesn't allow me to pursue
or be in pursuit of someone.

I can safely follow until the point
where I feel that if I continued,

it would put the general public
in danger.

He failed to stop.

So that means he might have
a weapon, he might have drugs.

10-16, black trousers.

- So annoying.
- Yamaha.

So that was a stolen bike.
That's why he failed to stop.

But Hotel Three, our other unit,

they are - they are advanced driver.

So they will be now
on the hunt for him.

That was my first failure to stop.

Yeah, you do have to make peace
with the fact

that you're not going
to get everyone.

However, it doesn't mean
that we didn't get

a lot of information
on that day.

We got a bike colour,
we got a licence plate.

We knew it was stolen.

Very exciting.

Yes, it is definitely
an adrenaline rush.

And I guess that's
why we do the job.

Like, we don't want to be sat
behind a desk.

With no arrest, Officer Holly's
first failure to stop

is chalked up to experience.

So we can always learn
from what we do and our mistakes.

But it's not long before
there's another erratic driver

that's caught
Officer Holly's attention.

- What he's doing?
- He's swerving.
- On his phone.

Krislyn, can you direct traffic
around? Hi, sir.

Just making sure you're OK.

But I'm just pulling you

because you literally
swerved into it.

And I was worried about having
some medical emergency.

OK, I was very worried.

You were very close to colliding.

OK. So when you drop,
we'll just leave it.

The man was reaching
for something on the car floor.

Just be careful.

I thought you were having
some sort of medical emergency

- by the way you were driving.
- When I saw you guys.
- OK.

Officer Holly firmly holds him
to account.

Have you got your seatbelt on?

You're gonna put it on right now.

He recognised the dangerous
manoeuvre that he'd done.

So I took the opportunity
to give him a little bit of advice.

As their busy shift ends,
Officers Holly and Krislyn

reflect on the job's challenges.

Is policing what you thought
it would be?

Is it like everything you thought,
or is it harder or is it easier?

I feel like every job will always
come with its challenges.

For Officer Krislyn,

it has not been a straightforward
road to getting a badge.

PC Lambert and myself,

we were on the same RFC originally,
so the same training course.

But unfortunately,
due to a personal circumstance,

she didn't graduate at the same time

and at that time,
it was really devastating.

Originally, when you're not passing

with your original mates
or colleagues,

it's definitely a sense
of embarrassment.

I was determined to get through it,
and...

I think that I showed
those that believed in me

that I had resilience.

As much as I don't really talk about
it, I'm very proud of myself for it.

I mean, look where she is now.

She's done it
and she's back with us

and we're riding together
in the car.

Life has a way of
working things out.

And here I am making a difference

in my country with
Miss PC Lavigne-Smith.

No-one calls me that.

Everyone calls me Holly
for some reason.

Detective Damon and Officer Tianna
have reached a key point

in investigating a package

suspected to contain drugs
hidden in its lining.

- Is it just in one side do we know?
- All four sides, I believe.

As they start unpicking the package,

each side reveals
a hidden plastic parcel.

And now it's just a matter of
what's the best way to extract it

to expose the product.

But as you can see, it's well taped,
well glued.

We do try our best to be
as careful as we can,

because our safety is more important

than this box and whatever's in it.

Obviously, one of them
is partially exposed.

We can now see that there's
a brownish substance within.

We have two lighter packages,
two darker packages,

more than likely
the lighter packages,

what we refer to as shatter,
which is a cannabis derivative.

Then you have your resin which also
is a derivative of cannabis.

Shatter and resin
are both highly concentrated,

easy to conceal, and come
with a high market value in Bermuda.

So as you see,
it's darker and you have...

Yeah, what we would
consider to be resin.

Cannabis is almost ingrained
in island culture.

The cannabis that we're now dealing
with is not the cannabis of old.

We're looking now that the products
that people are getting

in their hands are 60% to 85%
of the...

..I guess, the dangerous
hallucinogenic properties

of cannabis.

The final step is collecting
DNA from the packages.

My aim is to tie somebody
to the packages.

Yeah, I can definitely take
some swabs just to be safe.

DNA swabbing helps the case in court

because it places
that person at the scene.

It places them at the crime.

It places them with the exhibits,

whether that's drugs or a weapon.

So DNA evidence, I would say

that's the best sort of evidence
you could get.

These are the swabs

that I used to get potential DNA
off the packages.

So I'm just gonna scrape the swabs
over the entire surface right here.

And Detective Damon
turns his attention

to the street value of such
a large haul.

Per gram, if you're selling this

versus per gram of what you're
selling in plant material,

you get more out of this.

On a general estimate,
we have probably of the upward

of tens of thousands of dollars'
worth of drugs.

We've already had victory in that
the drugs are off the street.

What we do want is somebody
to be held responsible,

for bringing drugs into Bermuda.

Take the profit out of it,
and best case scenario,

somebody gets found guilty
and incarcerated.

With the drugs intercepted,
forensics done,

and the market value
in the tens of thousands,

it's a good day for Detective Damon
and the drugs unit.

It's very important for us to get
these type of drugs off the street,

to take the value and the profit
out of a person's hands,

and hopefully we come
to a positive result

with putting someone
before the court.

To date, no suspects
have been linked

to the imported drugs,
and the investigation continues.

Next time, a hunt
for a getaway vehicle...

I got a door ajar.

I just want to find it so badly.
