I know that we're dealing with some of
the most heinous crimes imaginable, and

First day of the trial, every one of us,

different from normality.

Didn't know we were only supposed to
have one personality.

I didn't know you were only supposed to
be a single head.

When I was a child, I was

weird.

My mum told me, you don't talk to the
voices in your head, you don't talk to

people in the head.

People in the head is dangerous.

People in the head is a sign that you're
crazy.

The asteroid has struck. And if you're
going to do it, hide it.

In the early 90s.

I knew that there were voices in my head
and that made me... But I didn't

realise that I had so many.

I was experiencing depression and I was
prescribed medication

and it wiped all of the masking away and

so I'm standing hanging out washing
and...

All I can hear are hundreds of
conversations going on around me, within

But I wasn't part of any of them.

There's girls and there's children.

There's very heavy masculine voices.

All the voices were in my head.

It was terrifying.

The Jenny I first met on Friday the
13th, March 1998,

was polite, considered,

thoughtful.

Didn't look me in the eye so much.

I think she was trying to stay small.

As the history unfolded, she said to me,
what do you think is wrong with me?

And I said to her, I think you know. And
she said, I want you to tell me.

So I said, I think you have multiple
personality disorder.

She agreed with that and then kind of
went, well, thanks very much. I'm off

As she was leaving, I said to her, I
think I can help you with that.

Would you like me to adjust anything?

No, I like this. Yeah.

How do you like the hair?

I love the hair.

And as I started to enter Jenny's
internal world, the word that comes to

just absolute fascination.

We are Dr Jenny Haynes.

We're also Jennifer Margaret Linda
Haynes.

We're the entity currently known as
Jenny.

And 2 ,000 plus different names in
between.

My preferred pronouns are we are and
our.

I have a persona, and that is

the face of Jenny. So I am constant and
consistent.

Being a kid with MPD.

Oh, there were some fun times.

The way we held pens.

differed depending on which altar was in
the body.

Anybody got a pen?

So, when we're normally writing, we hold
a pen like so.

Or like that.

We can write equally well either way.

We did trampolining.

We could do backflip.

and the split on week one.

And on week two, we were too terrified
to even stand next to the trampoline.

mean whether we sing bass, baritone or
soprano. We are never one person

functioning in the world at any one

20 years ago when I first met Jenny, I
found myself dealing with a condition

that I'd had no training in.

There was a significant percentage of my
colleagues, both psychiatrists and

psychologists, who would have dismissed
the condition.

I probably would have dismissed it until
Jenny sat down. It was only then that I

really got it.

This book, you know, was the Bible.

It's 1 ,200 pages of very dry...

historical, scientific data around
different conditions.

But when you come to this condition,
it's written about very differently.

Multiple personality.

The saint, the devil, the woman.

It reads like a movie or a novel.

I've never seen a case like this before.

23 identities live in Kevin's body.

The movie depictions, it's the craziest
of crazy.

These people have seen it at best
unpredictable, at worst dangerous.

It is not craziness.

Dissociative identity disorder, what
used to be called multiple personality

disorder, is this incredible power of
the human mind to rise above

abuse of the worst possible kind.

I was born in 1970 in London in England.

It's a lovely shot of my mother.

My sister and I, I would have been about
six to eight weeks old.

This is my parents' wedding photo.

My mother looked beautiful on her
wedding day.

She thought she'd found her Mr Right.

And when I think of my father, I always
see him in suit trousers and,

oh, white.

buttoned -down shirt.

My father wore Mr Respectable as a mask.

People don't ever question what might be
going on inside the house.

Unfortunately.

I am four years old in this picture.

It's so hard to look at this photograph
of me and know that at

this point, I've been tortured for four
years.

The monster that's torturing this little
girl is our dad,

Richard John Haynes.

To understand dissociative identity
disorder, you've got to see it first and

foremost as a survival strategy.

This condition develops prior to the age
of eight.

It's designed, it's built to help a
child get through ongoing recurrent

severe abuse.

The way the child does that is that it
does something very clever with its

It divides its mind up.

into, you could call them different
personalities.

We call them altars.

And these altars are quite separate.

And the most important one, in Jenny's
case, that symphony.

My dad's a monster.

He's terrifying.

He's at least 20 foot tall.

To me, he's 20 foot tall.

He told me that if I didn't do what he
wanted, he would hurt my siblings,

the cats and the guinea pigs.

And when the guinea pigs died, he told
me it was my fault.

me while I tell you what Daddy did.

You could be sitting at home, talking
with Mum, watching TV,

reading a book.

Dad would open the front door and the
atmosphere in the entire house

changed.

My entire family would be tense.

Daddy entering the house, he scared me
so much that I was afraid to breathe

because I thought the noise of my
breathing would draw his attention to me

he would hurt me.

People ask me how I was created or where
I came from.

And I don't really know.

I just know that when Daddy attacked

the original child, Jennifer Margaret
Linder, the very first

time, she was about six months old.

And when Daddy started to attack her...

I took on the job of protecting Jennifer
Margaret Linda at all costs. That is

my reason for existing and that is what
I do to this day.

This is the Jenny that migrated from
England to Australia in 1974.

I don't really think I understood that I
was actually moving across the planet.

We travelled from dank, dreary, grey,
wet

England to this amazing country

that had all new kinds of animals.

Everything was green and lush.

It was warm.

I bring my favourite teddy of all time,
Sweep. It goes everywhere

with me. And I never let Sweep out of my
hands.

Unfortunately, the hope that we had when
we left the UK...

did not even last the six -week journey
to Australia.

We hoped he would change.

We hoped he would stop hurting us.

And he didn't.

If anything, his abuse of me ramped up
once we reached

Australia.

sweep when I was really little and

dad would use sweep

to as if sweep was

talking to him so he would put sweep up
to his ear like I do and he'd do this

and then he'd tell me that sweeper told
him all my secrets

And he would steal Sweep. He would put
Sweep in the window

of the shed.

So to get Sweep, I had to go into the
shed.

I had to make conscious decisions.

Do I go and get Sweep and save Sweep
from Daddy, knowing that Daddy's

going to hurt me?

Or do I leave sweep there and risk daddy
hurting sweep?

When the reward for being

forced.

Do you think that the reward for that
was sweep?

If I had to go back, I would do it again
because I love Sweep and Sweep's been

more to me than any other toy or human
I've ever had.

I love you.

I will never let Daddy hurt you again.

I don't think human beings want to
believe that there are people out there

do this. It's just, it's overwhelming
for people.

I've got somebody sitting in front of me
with DID. I know that we're dealing

with some of the most heinous crimes
imaginable.

And somebody should be paying for that.

I'm Paul Stamula.

I've been in the police force for 34
years.

Throughout my career, I've dealt with
serious violent crimes against people,

robberies, serious assault, sexual
assault, kidnappings, shootings and

Jenny's case was by far the longest case
that I have worked on.

The investigation ran straightforward.

10 years.

In September 2010, the file arrived at
Bankstown Police Area Command.

The document that Jenny provided was
over 900 ,000 words.

It detailed hundreds and hundreds of
serious violent sexual assault offences.

The offences that we started to
investigate... commenced in 1974.

The abuse started when Jenny was very,
very young.

I was very shocked at the level of
detail and the clarity of detail within

offence.

A lot of people are not going to believe
that this victim can intricately

remember what had occurred to her at
that age.

When I first found out Jenny had
dysphagia identity disorder, it was

initial review of the brief of evidence.

So I had really not much of an idea what
it was.

It's a difficult thing because it takes
a long time to really grasp

what DID is.

You can easily fall into the trap of,
why is Jenny saying this? Why is she

saying this? Why is she behaving like
this?

not really understanding that it's an
alter that's behaving that way. I'll be

very truthful with you. The condition is
an unbelievable

one.

I didn't have the right language for
what happened to me.

So when the police were asking me to
tell my story and tell what happened to

I told them with the words as they
existed.

I described it like an elephant raising
its trunk.

I described it like a snake splitting
its skin.

Because Daddy never told me it was a
penis.

He called it it.

First meeting Symphony was a very, very
interesting experience. What resonated

with me was the level of innocence of
Symphony.

It's just like speaking to a very, very
young child. I had young children at the

time myself.

And just that level of care that you
have to give when communicating.

Dissociative identity disorder.

an incredibly powerful and clever
solution to overwhelming trauma

of a particular kind.

It's what we call betrayal trauma.

And this is where the people who are
meant to protect you and care for you

actually the perpetrators of the trauma.

And when they're the people abusing you,
that means there's no help coming.

There is nowhere to go.

There is no escape, and the only escape
is in your mind.

And then they start to build that world.

My name is Symphony, and I created
everybody.

Making an altar is like making jewelry.

You won.

This bead.

And you want that wire.

And then you want that spacer.

And then you want the trim.

And then you want the pendant.

All of these are different skills.

I didn't know I was making altars.

I was making friends.

Eric was the first altar simply made,
and he was 21 three seconds after

he was born.

He's tall and slender. Just think,
velvet

smoking jacket, fluffy shirt.

He's our idea of the perfect father.

I'm feeling okay, apart from the fact
I'm stuck in a frock.

I've got makeup on my face.

And I've got fingernails.

Other than that, everything's hunky
-dory.

I run the technical side of our system.

If you decided to walk inside my head,
say you walked in through my eyes,

the first thing you will see are
tunnels.

When Symphony started creating altars, I
had to find them places to go.

So I created a dungeon for them to live
in.

And they would all take turns to pop
into the body and do as much as they

could do per incident with that.

And then when they couldn't do any more,
they moved back one and the next person

came in and took over.

So we needed long corridors for that.

It's everything to do with how to
survive that.

When you go through the victim
statement...

it's like a wave that hits you.

And it's a wave of horror after horror
after horror.

And it's pretty much, it's an
unrelenting process to go through the

My mind immediately goes to how can we
prove each

offence?

In comparison,

to something like an armed robbery, for
example. You've got a crime scene where

you can investigate immediately.

You can canvass for witnesses and
capture as much evidence as you can.

With this particular crime, child sexual
assault, you're often backtracking

historically and trying to find
witnesses, trying to corroborate

events. It's an extremely difficult task
to do.

For this particular situation, what I
decided to do was a video walkthrough

of the crime scene.

I was mindful of what alters might come
out.

Michael had bleached blonde surfer hair.

He would be in black leather everything.

He will fight for you. He will protect.

He's the ideal brother.

So, we've been going through the police
investigation for a while.

We want to make it real.

Let's show them where all this bullshit
happened.

It's just words on a page right now.

Let's show them the house. Let's show
them the garden.

Let's take them back in time.

It's 11 .40am on Wednesday the 24th of
June 2015.

I'm currently in the company of Jennifer
Haynes.

Jennifer? We went back to Greenacre.

We were in our mid -40s.

The letterbox is the same. The trees are
the same.

Even the friendship ended here.

And we hadn't been there since we were
11.

We took the first step into the house
and it felt like I was suffocating.

We walk down the little hallway to

Yep. I'd only ever walked into that room
as a little girl.

And this is where he made me.

get on the end of the bed, and I was
raped by him.

I didn't understand what he was doing.

All I knew was that it hurt.

All right, let's move on to the next

I might need a two -minute break. Yeah,
OK, yeah, for sure, absolutely. The time

now is 11 .58, and we'll just spend the
interview for a short time.

We had to take a lot of breaks.

Jenny was experiencing a number of
changes within herself where different

were coming out.

Sure.

Were you there that day?

I was definitely there that day. I was
not letting them do that on their own.

We just took a short break for Jennifer
to have a little bit of a rest.

When I walked into that living room, the
lounge

room... OK, this room's layout is
similar,

but that door there was completely
blocked off.

I could remember everything that
happened there.

I remember...

Everybody that I had to calm as they
were being abused.

I remembered everybody that I was
present when they were

being created.

I saw the sofa where Dad

did the birthday ritual and where
Muscles was born.

On the 13th of January 1977.

When Dad...

I don't think Eric's the best person to
tell you this story.

I'm sorry.

Eric is too...

He holds himself too emotionally distant
so he doesn't get hurt. It's not right

for him to tell this story at all. I'm

Because it goes to sleep and then when

Daddy told me that...

birthdays weren't about celebrating my
birth.

They were a day to give birth.

And so the first time he did what I came
to know

as the birthday ritual was when I turned
seven.

Daddy took me out of my bed and the
whole house was

quiet and he led me into the living room
and he put me on the sofa and wouldn't

let me leave.

He tied my hand so I couldn't stop him
and then he

put an object which was about...

This big and about that wide.

And he put this object inside my

underneath.

He then told me I had to get it out.

I panicked and I was pushing down with
my tummy and my

bottom as much as I could. And I...

accidentally made muscles.

And muscles was born and he made the

muscle contractions to get that thing
out of

me.

Richard Haynes.

He was a person that inflicted sadistic
rituals.

We established a pattern in regards to a
lot of his offences, and a lot of that

was calendar -related, time -related.

Another serious incident that occurred
on her birthday.

I specifically recall being forced to
give birth on January 13, 1979.

On my 10th birthday on the 13th of
January 1980, my dad forced me to give

once more.

On the 13th of January 1981, dad forced
me to give birth on my 11th birthday as

usual. I believe that I lost
consciousness.

What do you think of your father?

I don't think there's words bad enough
to describe what I feel about that

bastard.

He's the cruelest, meanest monster that
ever lived. He is the devil fucking

incarnate.

And that's an insult to Satan.

I had a photo of Richard.

It used to be pinned on my desk and
every single day when I used to come

work, I used to look at it. I used to
look at his face.

And I thought, I'm going to arrest you,
I'm going to get you into custody, I'm

going to convict you.

I'm packing my stuff for a D &D game,
Dungeons & Dragons game.

Looking at which characters I wish to
take with me. Lots to choose from.

The process of packing for the Dungeons
& Dragons game is a really

physical expression of what I have to do
every night when I create the entity

that is currently known as Jenny.

Every night we go through packing all of
our skills.

into our suitcase, ready for the next
day.

I need this. I need this in my life. A
frontrunner is the person that you

meet when you meet Jenny.

Oh, she's beautiful.

Absolutely gorgeous.

The consistent face.

Responsible for.

the vast majority of our interaction
with the so -called real world. We want

Are we on 12?

Yes!

My experience of DID before Jenny,
little to none.

I had a lot of experience with trauma.

I guess it... It wasn't too difficult
for me to be able to work with Jenny,

particularly given the help that she
gave me. Once she let me into the

she was the one who taught me enormous

If we think about Jenny's internal
world, in terms of a planned,

military action, we have at the centre a

in to undertake the brunt of the battle.
Of course, another part of this,

symphony then starts to help.

terrible trauma, she would sing to them

during the abuse and afterwards to help
soothe and ground them.

Hence her name Symphony.

It is just such a beautiful, complex,

incredibly well designed.

of the yard again, just outside the

You don't have to go in there if you

This is telling.

You told me never to tell and I'm going
to tell even if it kills me.

Taking Jenny back to the family home
greatly helped corroborate a lot of her

statements.

This place was a very scary place.

It was just clearly evident that what
had occurred was even more horrific

than what anything written on paper
could portray.

Dad fixed up the shed so that he could
put a light in there.

From December 1976,

when we were six years old,

through till April 1981,

when we were 11, Dad would come multiple
times a week.

and take us out of bed and take us to
that shed.

Oh, my God.

Deep breaths.

You can do this.

Again, it's the same.

The bench? The bench is the same.

OK.

He added an interesting wrinkle in 1980
when he decided

to torture us with a soldering iron.

He put our hand on the box with a dial
and said,

if it gets too hot, turn it this way.

It burnt like bloody hell. And so we
reached our tolerance and we

yanked that dial clockwise like he told
us.

And it turned the heat.

up to maximum.

Turn on full bore.

I wasn't living with a child molester.

I wasn't living with a pedophile lover
of children.

I was living with a guy who thought it
was perfectly okay to torture a

child to within inches of its death.

And the only reason why we are not dead
is because we had the ability to yank

out the kid who was on the verge of
death and then shoot somebody else in

was brand new, fresh and able to cope.

And that's the only reason we've made it
a 54.

Because we had the ability to protect
ourselves.

Because sure as shit, there weren't
anybody to protect us.

Every time we try to tell our story,
there's the billion -dollar question.

Where was your mother?

This has got to be the hardest question
of all.

But that isn't what people are asking.
What people are asking is,

how did your mum live in that house and
not see what was happening to

you and not do anything about it?

Because the answer is right there.

She's in the house. She's in the garden.
She's right there.

Where was my mother?

There.

I think rather than speak specifically
about Jenny's mum, I'm going to talk

about what I often see happening here,
which is that the perpetrator chooses

their partner very carefully.

They choose a partner who will be
effectively, I think, beyond all else,

compliant.

The parent then not doing anything to
protect

their child sends an incredibly

powerful and equally, if not more
damaging message to the child,

which is that...

You're not worth saving.

You don't matter.

what my dad had done to me since I was
eight, and I'd never been believed.

Doctors, nurses, teachers, and nobody

had believed me.

We were getting a lot of...

and a lot of knockbacks when we tried to
progress the investigation.

A lot of people did not believe that
Jenny could recall what had happened to

at such a young age.

I was aware that there was a previous
investigation where Richard Haynes was

trialled for serious sexual offences in
the United Kingdom.

My name is Kim Whitman. I'm a former
Australian Federal Police Officer.

First time I met Jennifer Haynes was in
1996.

She was 26 years old.

Jenny's initial conversation with me was
reporting concerns around her sister

being in a marriage -like relationship
with her father in the UK.

We returned to the UK from Australia in
1981 when I was 11 and

my parents' marriage blew up early in
1984.

My sister was 16 and old enough to make
her own choice as to which

parents she went with.

And she chose my dad.

Dad had held my sister over my head my

entire childhood. He would actively
threaten that if I did not give in and

him do what he wanted, he would do it to
my sister instead.

I couldn't bear the idea of him hurting
my sister.

She contacted me and asked me for help.
My greatest terror had become

a reality, that he was abusing her.

And the only way I could protect her was

to talk to the Australian Federal
Police.

The extent of the abuse that was
occurring wasn't apparent and it was a

meetings later that it became obvious
that it wasn't just about her sister.

This had been happening to Jenny as
well.

We told Kim over time

what had happened in...

England between the ages of 0 and 4 and
11 and 14.

Jenny's father, Richard Haynes, was
charged by the UK police with

offences of sexual assault against both
Jenny and her sister.

When she was talking to me, I wasn't
aware of...

altered personalities.

I thought some of the voices that she
used when we were talking, I thought it

was just a quirkiness.

But Jenny's demeanour, and this is not
fair, her quirkiness already

places her in a poor position.

It's very easy for the...

to plant the seed that she is crazy or
that she's making it up.

The outcome of Richard's trial in the UK
was that he was sentenced to nine years

jail for the offences relating to the
sister.

But he never stood trial for those
matters involving Jenny.

I think that court matter in the United
Kingdom...

greatly impacted on Jenny for a majority
of her adult life.

Looking back at that, I think she felt
that, you know, is this another group of

people that don't believe me?

I was devastated and 25

that day and I've never had them back.

I think I'm the eternal student.

We used 18 years at university to...

really come to terms with what Dad had
done.

I did a Bachelor of Arts, double major
in Psychology, to find out what was

I then went on and did a Masters of
Criminal Justice to find out if what my

had done to me was against the law.

And then we moved on to do a PhD.

In victimology.

I believe in the system of justice.

I believe that that's the point of going
to prison, is you pay your penalty and

you come back and it's behind you.

After six years of Richard being in jail

the offences against her sister, Jenny's

I was so desperate

to put the abuse behind me.

I was absolutely desperate to have a
relationship with my

father. I wanted a family and I wanted
my father.

When I first decided to get in contact
with you, I never, ever imagined it

be so much fun.

I'm so glad I took the plunge. Now I
realise I don't just care about you. I

Jenny's reunification with her father
speaks to just how

incredibly forgiving children can be.

with our parents, even despite the worst
of the worst.

When I began to rebuild with Dad, he
seemed to be able to be

a real father.

He writes this stuff that makes me feel
like I might actually have a proper dad.

I mean, he'd never, in the whole time,
I'd known him prior to 2003,

ever said he loved me.

This moves pretty quickly.

To whom it may concern, I, Richard John
Haynes, declare that I wish to return to

Australia. I'm prepared to accept police
or other supervision as approved by my

daughter, Jenny Haynes.

I filled in the paperwork to support his
application to stay in Australia

permanently.

He spent two months being the ideal
father.

Couldn't have been more magical.

On my birthday...

13th of January, 2005.

Mum went to work and I was at home with
Dad on my birthday.

And... He got sexually aroused

significantly.

I fled to the bathroom and... And he
barreled in behind me and as I

stood at the sink trying to catch my
breath and wash my face, he put his one

hand around my throat from behind and he
pressed his erect penis into the

back of my legs and simulated sex until
he

ejaculated.

He's the ultimate manipulator.

And I have no doubt that he was able to
play that game to perfection.

These guys are very good at playing the
game of looking like they have changed,

but spend enough time with them and
their true nature comes out.

March 2005,

Richard is being deported.

on the basis of the criminal history
that he lied about on the passenger

It's a relief.

The whole process was utterly
devastating.

It was a moment when I realised that my
father was still a child

-molesting bastard and nothing was going
to change that.

The thing is, as awful as it was, I
would never have gone to the police

in 2009 if not for Dad coming to

Australia.

I reported my father to the police in
September of

2009.

When I wanted to write my own statement,
that's when the 2

,681 other voices were all heard at
once.

And it was people coming along and
going, I remember that. This is what it

tasted like. Or, yeah, yeah. And then he
said, we had one

goal.

Document everything.

Altars have this autobiographical
clarity.

You can just speak to an altar that is
five years old.

and ask them what happened, they will
tell you the story literally like it

happened yesterday.

When in fact, of course, it did happen
yesterday for them because they're five.

This happened when they were five
because it's a trauma memory.

It's sitting there, it's accessible, you
just have to unlock it.

Which turns out to be very, very helpful
when and if you

decide to take

Legal action.

Richard Haynes was living in County
Durham in the north of England.

The entire operation was highly
confidential.

Richard Haynes did not know that he was
being looked at from Australia.

We commenced taking out arrest warrants,
which was a very difficult process

because of the sheer volume of the
offences.

And with that, I think a lot of
frustrations grew within Jenny and a lot

alters came out.

When we started this, the alters
thought, write the

statement, he'd get arrested.

It took eight years. We're still not
there yet.

There were a lot of times where she was
highly emotional or a particular alter

was highly emotional.

I had telephone interaction with muscles
on a few occasions and it was very

colourful.

I've done everything you want me to do.

I've given you medical witnesses, I've
given you psychiatric witnesses, and

nothing is happening. We were on hold
with

no end date in sight.

Two years of solid work to put the
extradition process through.

First time I met him was at Heathrow
Airport where we had flown back to

Australia.

Richard Haynes was just a very, very
unusual person to be sitting next to.

He was visually excited when the airline
hostesses would be walking up and down

the aisle.

A very creepy individual, if I could say
that.

On my mother's birthday, the 23rd of
February, 2017,

I get a phone call from Paul Stamoulis,
and he

is exceptionally professional.

Good morning, I am calling you to notify
you that...

I have just brought Richard John Haynes
into the country. I will call you once

we have cleared customs.

Full stop.

Clunk.

To make that phone call was very
special.

It was probably the greatest moment in
my policing career.

A 72 -year -old man has been extradited
from the UK to Sydney to face more than

360 child sex charges.

He had been filmed getting off the
flight.

Shielding his face, Richard Haynes is
handcuffed in the back of a car at

International Airport.

Oh my God!

They said his name!

And I've never been so excited in my
life!

The 72 -year -old hit with a staggering
367 offences against a sole victim who

at the time was just a young girl.

There was a gentleman, he was a talking
head on the next news story and he

said... All my experience, I've never
ever come across a situation where

has been alleged to have committed 300
plus sex offences against the one

And I cried.

That simple sentence there, those words,
told me that what Dad did

was extreme.

And I'd not got it until he said those
words. If I could have that video of

those news stories, I could play that on
loop the rest of my life.

believe this could be the most prolific
case of sustained child abuse against

one victim Australia has ever seen.

Richard Haynes is accused of subjecting
Jennifer to seven years of degradation

and torture from the age of four.

The allegations are so numerous, so
utterly depraved, this is a judge only

trial.

The case finally gets to trial on the
18th of February

2019.

To my knowledge, entering that trial,
dissociative identity disorder had never

been successfully used by prosecution
and anywhere in the world.

Dr George Blair West.

The first point I would like to make,
Your Honour, is that Dissociative

Disorder, DID, is not an illness.

I was speaking to the centrality of the
diagnosis to the court case.

Her mind is living testimony to the
potential genius the human mind can

combat the most abhorrent of abuse
experiences.

For the first time ever, Jenny was going
to bring the argument

that her DID, seen often by the world as
the craziest of the

crazy, as the basis

for the prosecution.

They would call the alters to give
evidence.

There was utter consternation in the
system.

We didn't realise that multiple
personality disorder was going to be

evidence.

We didn't know whether this was going to
be a good thing or whether this was

going to make us the laughing stock of
Australia.

Are they going to now reject everything
we say because we're bonkers?

The decision to make the backbone of the
prosecution her diagnosis of

DID could go wrong in so many ways.

But of course... If we were able to
capture the essence of how you

create DID, the case was made.

Because Jenny's diagnosis means terrible
crimes were

committed.

At the moment that we took the oath,
every

one of us, all of us, 2 ,682 alters

stood in court and took that oath.

This was a oath to tell the truth and
everybody.

if the court

isn't prepared for a young altar in
particular to come out

it could absolutely go horribly wrong

You've got an aggressive barrister who,
they can do a pretty good impersonation

of a perpetrator who's attacking you.

And you can appreciate how that could go
very badly.

I was scared to see that when we walked
into court.

I was frightened that he would look how
he did when he was hurting me as a

little girl.

The door opened and Dad walked into the
dock and

I was expecting him to be in a suit.

And he came in wearing a prison
tracksuit.

It was very bizarre.

I got myself comfortable, and I stared
straight

at Dad, and I testified directly to Dad.

I told Dad exactly and precisely in
intimate and explicit detail

what he did to me.

The prosecution then asked me if I had a
special

toy.

And I said, yes, I did.

And I reached down and I pulled Sweep
out of my

handbag. So I was a polite little girl.

I introduced Sweep to the judge.

And Dad reared back in his seat in the
dock like

I'd reached across and slapped him with
sweep.

There was a big thumping noise when Dad
basically reared back in his chair.

I don't know why he reacted to sweep
like that.

But he did.

What then happened was after Symphony
spoke, her father asked to

take a break.

If child abuse was murder, Sweep was the
dead body.

When Symphony brought out Sweep and Dad
reacted...

so violently to a glove puppet.

Thweep shocked him.

Didn't you, bud?

He had used Thweep throughout our entire
life to control

us, to abuse us, to manipulate us.

Sweep, silent witness.

Get that smithereen.

For Jenny and her alters, it was very
emotional and it was a difficult

period of time whilst the discussions
were being conducted in regards to what

pleas would be answered.

The prosecution suggests we issue him
with an offer and

nominate those charges that we would
want him to plead guilty

to.

We think we've come to a conclusion,
everything's going to be fine, and then

hell breaks loose.

And we have a hysterical...

Tiny child, absolutely freaked because
he's not owning up to what he did to

And she said, the numbers are going in
the wrong direction.

She was hysterical.

We start off with 1 ,000 potential
charges.

Then we drop it to 367.

Then we drop it to 85.

And now we're dropping it to 41.

He's going to get out after five minutes
in prison.

It's not fair.

I had to run what we know as an all -in.

We have an enormous space and we just
crowd everybody in, hence all -in.

First thing we did, if you're happy with
the prosecutions, offer,

we got everybody to vote.

And everybody got a chance to talk about
what

they were feeling.

While we were in the middle of dealing
with this, Paul Stamoulis rang.

There's the aspect of having

In effect, thousands of victims and only
25 matters being pled guilty

to.

Describing that to Jenny is one thing,
but getting the alters to understand,

especially the young ones, is quite,
quite difficult to do.

There's a lot of young alters there and
they simply just would not, could not

understand the process.

Is the symphony back with me?

No. Who's come to join me?

I'm the little girl that cried.

I was very, very upset that Daddy was
not going

to own up to the things he did to me.

But muscles told me.

In the end, what mattered wasn't what he
pled guilty to. What mattered was

that he pled guilty to something and he
went to prison.

And that's why I agreed.

I was the last hauled out.

And in the end, I said yes to the plea
bargain.

One of Astoria's worst child sex
offenders pleaded guilty today.

Richard Haynes pleaded guilty midway
through his trial to dozens of counts of

child abuse and rape.

Ending his trial and years of turmoil
for his victim. We will put you in a

courtroom and we will testify against
you and you will go to jail.

Richard Haynes had pled not guilty all
along. So I'm sure that he expected to

able to discount and discredit his
daughter as he'd done all of her life.

But, of course, he, I don't think, had
any visibility on the system

and the inherent power of that system.

The fact that he capitulated so
quickly...

tells us that he went, oh, my God, this
is not

what I thought I'd be dealing with.

When Symphony came out and he saw the
fullness of what she could bring to the

proceedings, it all came crashing down.

From a very young age, Jennifer was
subjected to depraved and abhorrent

her father that did cause her
significant harm.

Arriving at a Sydney court today,
Jennifer Haynes was hopeful a sentence

match the horrendous nature of his
crimes would be handed down.

I'm sitting there and I'm listening to
what he did to me coming out of the

of a judge.

He was a mature and relatively
intelligent man who must have

was exploiting his daughter in a most
serious way.

Haynes barely flinched as he listened to
the judge read out a catalogue of his

shocking crime.

I knew then that she got us. She
understood us. She gave him music.

I impose an aggregate sentence of
imprisonment for 45 years to commence on

January 2017.

45 years!

Holy shit! 45 revs a minute.

Which is a single. And then she gave
him...

33 and a third years non -parole period,
which is an

LP, a long playing record, and it was
beautiful.

Richard Haynes, whose cruel and depraved
treatment of his daughter Jenny, is

almost certain to die in jail.

He will be over 100 by the time he will
reach his 33rd year in

prison.

He'll be dead.

And so the judge gave me life.

This isn't just my story. This is about,
hey guys, if you have DID, you can get

justice. If you were abused, go tell,
you can get justice. If I can get

with all the barriers in front of me,
then you can get justice too.

As an investigator, you take the highs
and lows and you learn how to

accept loss and accept victory.

And you have to be very, very humble
when you accept the victory.

It was a great relief for us as
investigators, but the greatest joy was

looking at Jenny and...

Seeing her as a victor and knowing that
this was going to inspire many other

people who have never had the courage or
the ability to report sexual assault.

I have never met a person like Jenny
Haynes. I don't think I ever will.

She's unrelenting in her pursuit for
justice.

Sit.

And she's one of the greatest
inspirations I've ever seen.

The courage that it takes to visit the
worst possible thing that

one human being can do to another,
voluntarily, is

huge. Most people avoid it.

So the people who come into my office...

They're already, for me, heroes.

That's a really beautiful thing.

To be able to watch somebody rising
above some of the most horrific

things that human beings can experience.

Who or what saved Jenny? Jenny saved
Jenny.

Yeah, she kept on pushing to get help,
to get the right help.

But no, Jenny saved Jenny.

I built a choir.

And every one of those people in my
choir are an

essential part.

And I am so proud of every single one of
them. And I'm proud of them for what

they did in the dark times.

And I am so proud of them for what
they're doing now in our days of

We are not building to be a Jenny.

They're all working to be a symphony, to
become part of me.

Everybody becoming a symphony, which is
really exciting.
