Dany Boy Kane
was a career criminal
who was a thief,

murderer, and drug dealer.

But he was also the most
successful informant

in the history of
law enforcement in Canada.

And he was doing a lot of things

that if he got caught doing,

he would have been killed
on sight.

Dany Boy Kane was found dead
on August 7, 2000,

in the garage of his
suburban Montreal residence.

He had committed suicide
by carbon monoxide poisoning.

I don't know whether or not

that's believable or credible.

He may have killed himself.

He was also someone
who was wanted dead

by a lot of violent people.

The police
are investigating

one of the bloodiest
drug-trafficking gang wars

North America has ever seen.

And their golden boy,

this informant who's gonna help
them take down the Hells Angels,

is out of the picture.

The police investigation
is collapsing.

But when
investigators begin going
through the things

that he left behind,
they found a diamond in
the rough,

they found a ledger.

And that ledger had
the nicknames of almost every
major player

in the Montreal underworld.

One name stuck out, though.

And that was the nickname Beef.

Nobody knew who Beef was.

Who is this man?

Who's Beef?

And that will lead to
a shocking discovery

and the takedown of top leaders
of organized crime in Montreal.

Cocaine hit
North America in the 1980s
like a typhoon.

The drug is getting more
plentiful, and worse,

it's getting more powerful.

It went from
a drug that was really just for

the rich and famous
to a drug that was

readily available to anybody
and everybody on the street.

And any neighbourhood
you could go into

by the mid to late 80s,
there was a cocaine market.

Rich, poor...
Irish, Italian,

French-Canadian...

Montreal
in the 80s and 90s,

you had 480 clubs.

I knew one doorman.

He was passing two kilos
of coke on a weekend.

Two kilos.

That's one place.

It was hopping
seven days a week.

Every club.

I remember certain clubs,

the cocaine, the lines were
already ready at the back...

...for certain hockey
players and baseball players.

It changed everything.

It was a way to get rich
really quick.

And in the underworld,

to get powerful really quick.

There was money to be made.

You didn't have to do a lot
of heavy lifting.

And the margins
were just ginormous.

And nobody benefitted from
this more,

at least in Canada,

than a group of ragtag criminals
known as the West End Gang.

Dunie Ryan, the leader
and the founder

of the West End Gang,

had begun to transition
from robberies, bank holdups,

truck hijackings, to cocaine.

I mean, you could rob a lot
of banks,

but you're not going
to make the money you can make

from cocaine.

If you're
dealing with a lot of drugs

and a lot of money,

someone's going to take
advantage of something,

and then you find out
the consequences are usually

you're gonna get killed.

In November 1984,

Dunie Ryan is assassinated
by a rival gangster.

There's a power vacuum.

Alan Ross moves to the top.

But he goes down to the States,
he gets arrested.

Spends the rest of his life
in a US penitentiary.

And the Matticks brothers,

who have always been there,

who have always controlled
the ports,

now become the new
powerful leaders
of the West End Gang.

The Irish gangsters.

Everything was interlinked,

but the Italians were
importing the narcotics.

They had the connections.

They had links straight
to the cartels,

and the Irish assured
that it came in

through the ports.

They did basically
the clearance.

They was getting a cut.

You open the door,
there's money.

The Port of Montreal
is supposed to be

the world's largest inland port,

something like 2000 ships

and 2600 trucks every week.

It's 26 kilometres long.
I mean, it's not a port,
it's a city.

Controlling
the waterfront is
the crown jewel

of the rackets in Quebec.

It all starts and ends
on the docks.

They handle
70% of goods that go straight

to the economy,
and so obviously,

the volume is huge.

You can't get
anything in Montreal,

whether it's your car
or your fridge,

or cocaine or hash,

unless you go through that port.

Lots of
merchandise goes underwater.

It's a big playground.

That's all I'll say.

Containers come in by the
millions every year.

But only 1 % to 2 %
of what comes into the country
is inspected.

Which is very little.

And the
straw that stirs the drink for
that entire waterfront

is Gerry Matticks.

He is the puppetmaster there.

In 1984,
Gerry Matticks,

the unofficial leader
of the West End Gang,

known criminal,
takes over as president

of the checkers' union.

He would make sure
who got hired, who got fired.

So it gave him
a huge amount of power.

It was
the checkers who had to
go through the containers

to make sure that everything
was legit.

And they were loyal to him,

so they knew not to check
certain containers.

That's how he became
known as the door

to the Port of Montreal.

It was really easy for him
to tell his checker,

"Such and such container

will be picked up by a driver
with a waybill.

Just let him take it."
And that was that.

My uncle Kenny
was a checker down there,

and the guys, you know,
they would let stuff go through,

right, you were... paid off.

They weren't like out
hurting anybody,

they were just
making money, right?

So if you're
trying to move drugs
into Montreal,

and then from Montreal
across the country

and down to New York,

the port is your way.

Most of
the drugs were being brought in

by the Italians,

in cooperation with the Irish,

and the bikers
were distributing.

The bikers
were the boots on the ground.

They were the ones that
were actually trafficking it.

Back in
the 1970s, the Hells Angels

set up their first chapter
in Canada, in Montreal.

But for most of the 1980s,

you know, the rough-looking
greasy bikers,

they're involved in drugs,

but they're largely
errand boys.

In that era,
bikers were considered
a second-class,

rough-and-tough individuals.

They were feared because
of their lifestyle.

And amongst themselves
was conflict.

The Hells
Angels chapter in Montreal
got so big

that by the late 70s,

the leaders decided to split
the Montreal chapter into
two different factions.

One that would be based
out of Sorel in the south,

and the other, which would be
based in the north of Montreal
in Laval.

The Laval chapter was
filled with coked-out cowboys

that didn't listen to
their superiors,

they didn't follow rules.

Did more drugs
than they were selling.

Getting high became more
important than making money.

I've actually been
to biker parties.

I mean, it's like it meets
every stereotype
you could ever have.

You know, "last night I snorted
this much cocaine,

"and I smoked this much meth".

I have spoken to a number
of biker bosses

when it's clear as day
that they're high as a kite

when I'm talking to them.

They wear it as a patch
of honour, and...

But sometimes it can go...
overboard.

The Laval guys were causing
a lot of problems

and headaches for
Hells Angel leadership.

They were desecrating the patch,
the brand, by their behaviour.

Early spring of 1985,

the Laval chapter was called
to a meeting

to talk about resolving
their differences.

So on the 24th,

most of the Laval Hells Angels
chapter showed up to meet

with the leaders of
the Quebec Hells Angels.

Instead of a meeting,
they were massacred.

In front of dozens
of other Hells Angels.

June 1985,
in the St. Lawrence River,

bodies start floating up,
and you see police divers

and police boats lifting
these bodies onto the shores
of the St. Lawrence.

And what people realize is
these are remains of bikers.

The massacre shocked not
only members of the public
and the police,

but many in the biker world.

These guys are massacring
their own members.

It was an act
of extreme cruelty.

It shook the foundation
of the underworld.

Everybody knows
the Lennoxville massacre.

There were
two bikers in Montreal

who had very
different reactions.

Maurice Boucher, and his friend,
Salvatore Cazzetta.

Mom Boucher
and Salvatore Cazzetta

were both young leaders
of a motorcycle gang that
was called the SS.

And the two of them
would have been ideal prospects

for a group like
the Hells Angels to take on.

But in the aftermath
of Lennoxville,

their paths diverged.

Mom Boucher was enamoured
with the Lennoxville massacre.

He thought it was
a show of force.

And Mom Boucher joined
the Hells Angels.

Salvatore Cazzetta had
a very different reaction.

His reaction was why would
you wanna kill your own, right?

I'm not sure I wanna
be part of that.

So, Cazzetta will
create the other bikers,

the Rock Machine.

And he develops,
with the Rock Machine,

pretty strong control
over wide swaths of Montreal.

You know, everybody
at that point was dying
for a Hells Angels patch.

And then you had this group
that shunned the Hells Angels,

they had an invitation
to join the Hells Angels,

and they rejected that
invitation and went
and started their own club.

The Rock Machine,
don't get me wrong,

they're ruthless criminals,
but they have a set of values

that differed from Mom Boucher
and his little clique
around him.

Maurice Boucher,
early criminal,

quite charismatic,
and the Hells Angels
are leaderless.

Because of the massacre,

not only are a lot
of their members dead,

the members who have been
accused of the massacre

are all in jail,
and Maurice Boucher will rise

to become the leader of
the Hells Angels in Quebec.

Because Boucher and Cazzetta
were close friends,

the Rock Machine
and the Hells Angels co-existed,

respected each
other's territories.

Then it all fell apart.

Salvatore Cazzetta
wasn't just the boss
of the Rock Machine,

he was somebody that did a lot
of business with other groups,

he was tied into
the West End Gang, the Irish,

he was tied into the Italians,

very closely aligned
with the Rizzuto mob.

And through these contacts,
he made a lot of links

in the drug game
in the United States.

And began negotiating
a pretty massive drug deal

down in Florida for
a 10,000 kilo purchase.

There's a...

Mr. Cazzetta many years ago.

Of course, we knew who
Cazzetta was in law enforcement.

A drug dealer, tough guy.

He was thinking that this is it,

boy, I'm really going to
make the big one.

So Cazzetta
and an associate of his

go down to Florida, and there's
a meeting on a yacht,

and on the yacht,

they negotiate the price
of a series

of wholesale cocaine shipments

that are going to go
from Florida to Canada.

And the boat had every camera
in the goddamn world
in that boat,

even when you went to sit
on the toilet,

he got a picture of you.

The guy that was
offering them the 10,000 kilos

was a undercover DEA agent.

It was a sting,
it was a DEA sting.

When you get overwhelmed
in your head about money,

you're gonna make mistakes,

a lot of mistakes.

Within 24 hours of arriving
back in Canada,

Cazzetta is arrested
and charged,

and along with
a number of associates,

with a major cocaine
trafficking case

out of the United States.

But within a couple days
of being let out on bond,

Sal Cazzetta disappears
for the next 15 months.

Just a regular day
at the office,

and we get a call
that Cazzetta's up
in Niagara Falls,

and we have information that,

I think there was two guys
going to see him,

from a source.

We were able to get a hold
of those two guys wherever
they were,

I think on St. Lawrence
Boulevard,

and we followed them to Ontario.

To a farm.

And that's where Cazzetta was.

The house was surrounded
with pitbulls.

I mean, a church mouse
couldn't go through there

without the dogs yapping
and the alarm going off.

And we knew he was in there...

We spent overnight
in our cars,

waiting to make sure
that nobody came out.

The next day, we had a call,

hey, there's a guy jogging down
the back road to the farm.

And we said, okay boys,
this is our guy, here he comes.

And John Westlake,

big beefy cop that he is...

...nails Cazzetta.

Get down on
your knees, my friend.

We got our prized package,
put it that way.

Cazzetta is arrested
and he will be extradited

to the United States,

'cause it's an
American operation.

Cazzetta was someone
who carried a lot of weight.

So, when he was imprisoned
in the United States,

that gave Mom Boucher free rein.

With Cazzetta off the streets,

Hells Angels smelled blood
in the water,

and, you know,
they're the ultimate sharks.

And almost immediately,

the Hells Angels started moving
on the Rock Machine,

pressuring them,
leaning on them,

to give up territory
to the Hells Angels.

Mom Boucher sets up
what are called puppet clubs.

Almost like farm teams, right?

These are low-level
junior clubs that can

do the dirty work,

and so the big leaders
won't get caught.

And so he creates
a group called the Rockers.

And the Rockers will start
attacking the bars

and the streets where
Salvatore Cazzetta's
Rock Machine

are supposed to control
the drug trade.

So if they found out

that the Rock Machine
had taken over a bar,

their foot soldiers would
show up with baseball bats

and the Rock Machine dealer
would get dealt with.

You can really credit cocaine,

and the cocaine economy,
with taking the violence

and the bloodshed
to a whole other level.

It was a billion-dollar trade
in cocaine in Montreal,

and that's why you had
all these different groups

fighting over who would
have what, and at other times,

trying to muscle in
and get more.

Hells Angels wanted
to take control.

The Rock Machines
were not as powerful.

They didn't have much,

but they didn't want
to give it up.

And this put the Rock Machine
on the offensive.

They were not going to
adhere to the pressure

that was being applied to them
by the Hells Angels.

The Hells weren't
expecting it,

that this group
would actually challenge them.

And I don't think
the law enforcement
expected it either.

By July, the first
body dropped.

And the Rock Machine
killed a Hells Angels

support club member fixing
a motorcycle in his garage.

The following day,
a Hells Angel member

named Norm Robitaille survived
a drive-by shooting.

Fireworks are going off
at a rapid clip.

48 hours after
the first killing,

Mom Boucher called
an emergency meeting

of all of the top Hells Angel
chapter bosses across Canada,

and he held a vote.

And the vote was whether or not
to go to war

with the Rock Machine.

And at the end
of the meeting,

it was a unanimous decision
that a war would commence

and it would
commence immediately.

It was a shoot on sight order.

At any time they saw
a Rock Machine member

or a support club
of the Rock Machine,

they were to murder
that person immediately.

And that will be the official
launching of what becomes
the Quebec biker war.

You know,
almost 200 casualties,

300 shootings and firebombings,

and it rocked the province
of Quebec to its very core.

Gerry Matticks didn't choose
a side in that war,

he didn't put the West End Gang
in the Hells Angels camp

or in the Rock Machine camp.

Mom Boucher was putting pressure
on him to officially align

with the Hells Angels,
and he wouldn't do it.

He rebuffed those attempts.

He said it would be bad
for my business brand.

Meaning the West End.

You donate to every party
in politics.

Whoever comes in...

...is your friend.

It's basically the same thing.

Keep your... Keep your friends
close and your enemies closer.

There were stories that,
during the height of
the biker wars,

the Rock Machine approached
Gerry Matticks and tried
to get him to negotiate

some kind of peace.

So you just see how central
the West End Gang

and Gerry Matticks
were with all factions.

Because the port is a goldmine
for organized crime

to bring in their illegal goods,

and the Irish West End Gang
controlled the port.

At that time, at least half
the checkers

on the Port of Montreal
were of Irish descent.

It's still part of
the port here.

Pointe-St-Charles, why they...

You know, it's just
the location,

it's so close to
the Port of Montreal.

All these companies here either
fix containers, distribute,

or they're depots
for containers, so...

all related to
the Port of Montreal.

I was born there.

Grew up there.
It was close-knit family,

and they called it
the Irish gang.

They all grew up together,

they'd been there
for a couple of generations.

They were all friends
and associates.

You would marry the neighbour
of the street's daughter.

Pointe-St-Charles was
a very poor area.

A lot of families had seven,
eight kids.

And the children
growing up there, you know,

they see the other side,
and they wanna improve

their lives using
whatever means.

Gerry Matticks grew up
in a family of 14

with a father
who was supposedly supporting

the family by driving a horse
and buggy for tours

in Old Montreal.

A mother who spent
most of her life pregnant.

They didn't have anything.

Gerry Matticks was a friend
of my father, d

rinking buddy with my dad.

You grew up around them
all your life, right?

Like, it's... You call them
uncle, you were respectful.

There was four or five of them
who all put their heads together

and they decided what
they were gonna steal.

And they stole everything.

In that era,
the Irish mafia

were doing truck heists

because they knew what was
in the containers

and they would rob the trucks.

Gerry and the other
Matticks brothers

are hijacking trucks,
stealing food,

televisions, appliances.

Back then, there was no GPS,

there was no trackers,
there was no nothing, right?

We're talking about
before cellphones.

We're talking
about those days,

that's when they
were in their heyday.

The guys who weren't involved
never said nothing,

the guys who were involved
got paid.

And nobody's gonna say
nothing because if you did,

you'd end up in the water.

In 1971, the police got a call
from Alan Seller,

who was working on the docks
in the Port of Montreal,

saying that the Matticks
brothers were stealing
from the port.

When the Matticks brothers
got wind of this...

They allegedly kidnapped
Alan Sellers...

And Sellers was taken
into a car...

...and shot twice.

They didn't get rid
of the witness,

they said he shot him,
but the guy never testified
against them.

So there's no proof
that he shot him even.

All I know is, nobody was
that good a shot

'cause he was
still alive, right?

There were witnesses
who came forward,

including a former RCMP officer,

who then later became a member
of the West End Gang,

and they said, that no, no,

they were all drinking with us
at this bar,

so they couldn't have done it.

And they all got off,
of course, because...

...they had witnesses who placed
them in a bar that very moment

that Sellers was shot twice.

All of them grew up
in the same neighbourhood.

They all knew each other.

And even if they
weren't criminals,

they had an affinity towards
their friends that they
grew up with.

And they all were prepared
to fall for each other.

When the police try
and investigate,

nobody talks either out of fear,
out of respect, or out of love.

It's like the mafia
in some parts of the world,

they give all their towns
full of food and money,

and they're the good guys and...

and so nobody talks.
Yeah, the Matticks were giving

contributions to
different places,

and very nice to people at
Christmas and New Year's.

There is a side
to Gerry Matticks, you know,

that Robin Hood side,
where he gives food to the poor,

he gives out turkeys
every Christmas,

he's there for families who
need him in the Irish community.

Oh, they did a lot
for a lot of people.

Like... and cops can say
what they want,

oh, they did this,
they stole that. Yeah, so what?

If you look at Matticks,

who at the age of 12 years-old

was taking a rowboat to row over
to Bickerdike Pier, jump off,

grab something, and row back
to Pointe-St-Charles.

When you have that type
of upbringing,

you end up further
and further away

from the authorities
in your dealing.

So, you could start off
being a street trafficker,

and if you're lucky,
you become a little wiser,

you end up dealing
with boatloads of drugs.

In the spring of '94,
Canada Customs

discovers suspicious containers.

There were allegedly containers
carrying narcotics,

from Mozambique,
on a ship called Thor.

The information indicated
a container number,

so we requested that container
be removed from the ship.

Then, we put it under
24-hour surveillance

to see if anyone would come
pick them up,

and we could catch them
red-handed.

Pretty quickly,
we suspect the Matticks clan

because it's in
the Port of Montreal,
which they control.

This place right
at the corner.

That was their watering hole
while they were waiting
staff at the port,

they'd all hang out.

It was a restaurant,
Italian restaurant

they would come in,
they had the key.

Always overlooked
by the police, also.

Allegedly, Gerry Matticks
knows about this,

he's organizing this,
the police know about this,

and eventually,
Gerry Matticks knows
that the police know.

So the Matticks never tried
to take control
of the drug shipment.

26 and a half
tonnes of hashish,

15 % pure, worth
$ 360 million dollars

on the street.

At the time, 26 tons of hash
was the largest-ever
Canadian seizure.

Worth 360 million on the market.

It was massive.

We had enough information
about the Matticks clan

to start surveillance
on the organization.

There was one person
we wanted to identify.

He knew about
the containers

and was clearing them
through customs.

That was Pierre Friedman.

He was about 45 or 50,
an average Joe.

We decided to arrest him
and bring him in
for questioning.

Within 15 minutes,
he had admitted,
"Yep, I did it. It was me."

He was nervous,
but he agreed to wear a wire

to meet with Gerald
and Richard Matticks.

Now that we have an informant,

the goal is to gather evidence
about Gerry Matticks.

He goes to Gerald Matticks'
place of business

and explains that he's afraid
he's going to be arrested.

"I'm feeling the heat.

I need money to get away."

The Matticks brothers give him
about five or ten thousand.

It's unexpected evidence,

especially considering
certain admissions are recorded
on the body-pack.

We now have solid proof.

26 tonnes
of Hashish found at
the Port of Montreal.

It belonged to a group
of suspected drug traffickers

known as the Matticks Clan.

Police arrested seven people,

including the Matticks
brothers,

Gerald and Richard.

Throughout his long career
as a criminal,

Gerry Matticks hardly spent
any time in jail.

Now, the headlines are
kind of like,

"Death blow to
the West End Gang",

the Matticks brothers, you know,
come down...

THE MATTICKS' MISTAKE...
26,5 TONS OF HASH!

It did look like
it was gonna be game over

for the Matticks.

I had just started
at the courthouse

as the reporter there,

and there were
these men on trial,

a whole tableful of lawyers,

and Gerry Matticks was
in the prisoners' dock

with everyone else,
and he was leaning forward

like a bull,

and he had the most
personality in that courtroom.

Just he...

He radiated rage
and interest and...

...a little bit of humour, too.

Richard Matticks was much
quieter than his brother.

But he was also
very much in charge.

The Crown's evidence
was unbelievably strong.

I think everybody was
focused on the fact,

we are in a tight space,

and how are we going to
get out of this.

Gerry turned to me,
and he said,

if you's guys don't win,

you's dead!

Gerry could be
a very friendly guy,

and at the same time,
a very scary guy,

and you got the impression

you didn't wanna cross this guy.

It was a clear-cut case,

but with the chain of evidence,

chain of possession
of the evidence,

they screwed up.

The Defense claimed that
Sûreté du Québec officers added
incriminating documents

into evidence, stating
they were seized at the house
of one of the accused.

It turned out that
three bills of lading

had been planted.

In addition to that,
there were French documents

with his signature,
and he claimed to

not speak French,
to be illiterate,

to be incapable
of signing his own name.

A judge ruled
the investigating officers

fabricated evidence against
the accused Matticks brothers.

They really wanted to
get the Matticks brothers.

Very stupidly,
they didn't count on the fact

that there was maybe,

I don't know, seven lawyers
involved in the file.

One of them was bound
to see something,

and so we were able
to demonstrate that

you could no longer have
any confidence in any

of the evidence that
they were producing,

and the case blew up.

The defendants have avoided
a possible life sentence.

The cops are furious
'cause they know

he's the leader of
the West End Gang,

controls the ports, and yet,
they blow it.

So it just increases
the hatred between

the cops and the West End Gang.

I think they should lose
their job anyway,

and not give them
another job in
the government building.

Throw them out.

Fabricating evidence is a crime.

The Sûreté du Québec's
reputation was shattered.

The police were undisciplined
and thought they could
get away with anything.

The Matticks case devastated
their public image.

Bad enough that
the Quebec Provincial Police

had failed to convict Gerry
and Richard Matticks,

but they were also failing
to stop the biker gangs,

who were bloodying the streets
of Montreal in a biker war

that would see mounting
and mounting casualties.

Bikers have been battling it
out in Montreal for more
than a year,

with deadly results.

27 people have been
blown up or shot dead.

Mom Boucher was a war general.

And this was something
that he was built for.

If anyone needed
to be eliminated,

or any territory taken,
that was Maurice Boucher's job.

Along with seven other members,

Mom Boucher created
the Nomad chapter.

The Nomads were the Navy SEALs
of the Hells Angels.

And if you had a Nomad patch,

if you were one of what
he called the Filthy Few,

which meant that you had killed
for the club,

you were able to roam free,
coast to coast, in Canada.

They didn't have to stick
to any one city
or one region.

Mom always wanted to be
"the" boss of the entire market.

So they were becoming
good players in Ontario as well.

Mom would see himself as
in charge of drug trafficking

across Canada.

Meanwhile, Mom Boucher's
enemies form what becomes

known as the Alliance.
It's the Rock Machine

and other gangs that
are worried and fearful

about the Hells Angels takeover
of the drug trade.

And it starts turning
against the Alliance

and the Rock Machine.

Bodies were dropping
on a weekly basis.

There were shootings
and fire bombings

almost every day.

They had no respect for rules,

and they cultivated
a climate of fear.

I was horrified by the deaths,

but the police didn't seem
to be too horrified,

because it was, basically,

biker gangs cleaning house,

until Daniel Desrochers.

That day, an 11-year-old child,
Daniel Desrochers, was outside

with one of his friends,
coming back from the park.

Near his house,
a Jeep was parked.

Someone was sitting in it,

and someone else was just
about to get in.

The vehicle exploded into
a thousand tiny pieces.

The explosion was
so violent that many windows
were shattered.

Metal flew across the street.

One of the pieces of the vehicle
landed on Daniel Desrochers.

He was hit in the head.

A car bomb exploded
in the middle

of a residential neighbourhood
in Montreal today.

The driver was killed
on the spot.

Five people were injured,
including an 11-year-old boy,

who is currently

What are the chances

some innocent bystanders?

It could've been anybody,
could've been your mother,

my mother,
could've been anybody.

Hundreds of people attended
a funeral today for
a young victim

of the war between
motorcycle gangs in Montreal.

I can still see the images
of his mother on television

at the funeral,
it was unbelievable.

When criminals kill each other,
it's not pretty,

we don't like it
and we don't want it,

but when it stays
in their own little underworld,

we tell ourselves
that we're safe,

because we're not
a part of that.

But when the victim is a child

who has absolutely nothing to do
with the biker war,

who's simply playing outside,

that's so unforgivable
that it affects us.

You have a young kid
becoming collateral damage

in a war that suddenly became
a war that affected everybody.

That was the worst part,
realizing that nothing
was beyond the bikers.

It was terrifying.

That's how everyone felt.

When you go on a murder scene,
and it's a member
of organized crime,

you say, you go,
you live by the sword,
you die by the sword.

Yeah, your call.

When you see some idiot

that puts a bomb and it explodes
and it kills a child,

it gives you a reason
to be a detective.

It angers...
that's when your blood
starts boiling.

And you wanna go
on the front line.

There was pressure
on the government to respond,
which it did.

The Wolverine Squad was created.

This was the signal
for law enforcement
to counter-attack.

We finally had a squad
that united the various
police forces.

When we
started the Wolverine squad,

the first month,
it was like hell.

You're putting three
different cultures together.

I... I was very fortunate,

I was just promoted
sergeant detective.

I came out of a patrol car,
and they placed me there

because of my interest
in the Italian organized crime,

we knew that the Italians
and the bikers were close,

so they needed somebody
that could've made them
bridge together.

We're over 100 guys there,
of detectives.

It was just...
it's over, guys.

And it reminded me of,

you know, the fourth quarter
in football.

And it's a tie game
and you take a 30-second break.

And your coach says
it's either now or never.

Don't fuck up.

As this law enforcement effort
was stepping up,

Mom Boucher wanted
to make a case that

you're not gonna stop us,

you're not going
to bring us down.

Boucher wanted to make
a statement,

and he did that.

Diane Lavigne
was shot and killed in June,

on her way home from work.

We're gonna hit
prison guards...

that's how out of control
it had become.

Pierre Rondeau
was ambushed while behind

the wheel of a prison van.

Four bullets to the chest,
two more to the throat.

Maurice Boucher
was determined

to extinguish
any of his members' desire

to talk to the police,
to become informants.

He figured, if they killed
people associated
with the judicial system,

no one in the police would agree

to anyone becoming an informant.

He started with
correctional officers.

He figured that if
that didn't work,

they would move on
to police officers,

prosecutors or a judge.

In his madness,
that was the plan.

The bikers began to feel,

hey, we... We've got power,

we can do whatever we want.

It was all on behalf of Mom.

Because Mom wanted
the supremacy.

It's hard to control
a wild horse.

And that's what led
to this bloodbath.

The Irish kind of looked at it

and said, what do we do?

Let's not get involved.

And that's what happened,
they weren't...

They didn't get involved.

The bikers are killing
each other,

and the West End Gang
is working with both sides.

'Cause while they were
cooperating with

the Hells Angels
and Maurice Boucher,

they were also working with
the Rock Machine.

This is in the middle
of a biker war, right?

This is dangerous work.

There was some concern
among investigators in the US

that if this is getting this bad
in Quebec, could it spread?
