My opinion of the girls who post nude in
magazines, they're a bit too skinny.

The class of girl is a very good class
of girl. She's earning her money, she's

doing her job.

Doesn't matter what she does for a
living, in my opinion. Well, I think

alright as girls, but they're cheap
girls.

They don't have no self -respect for
themselves.

I've got to have a nice figure and big

Well, that's an American scene. They
seem to like big tits and everything. It

doesn't really interest me.

Some of the girls are pretty nice
looking.

Now, it's really hard to tell what kind
of girls they are. Some could be just

like any ordinary secretary.

Some are school teachers.

And some are just plain party girls.

Well, I find them very glossy and I
suppose easier on the eye, but they

much of my gland.

But they're willing to do it, fair
enough. I mean, I wouldn't do it. Oh, I

they're a bit tarty, quite honestly.

Well, they're not my sort of person, so
I wouldn't come into contact with them.

I mean, anyone who wants to do it can do
it. I certainly wouldn't, and I don't

know anyone who would.

I did the layout first of all because I
needed the money.

I decided I would like to do something
like that because it was the only thing

that would produce quite a bit of money.
When I was working in a restaurant, I

met Joe Brooks, who's the art director.

and he suggested working for Penthouse.
We can sometimes get photographs

submitted to it. Sometimes we get people
phone us up, either husbands, wives,

boyfriends, and God knows what else, and
they have daughters and nieces and

cousins.

Occasionally, obviously, we come across
their own girls by just seeing them in

the street.

Basically, it's then just the stop of...

Excuse me, you don't know me, but... At
the moment I'm working in the bank and

I've been there for three years.

And, you know, everything's so boring
and it's just getting on top of me. I

want to change everything.

So, anyway, I was reading this advert in
the paper and I suddenly realised that

this was my chance to break away from it
all.

And I answered the ad and then I...
decided that I'd do the photographic

did it for a reason, because I needed
money.

Basically, I'm really an actress.

I was based as an actress for a long
time, and I'm quite successful in my

career. Didn't mean no harm, and I'm
still an actress, and a good one. I

it will fulfill my ambition to be an
actress, and...

Because you got some publicity and maybe
there's some nice producer who will see

me. I just suddenly realised, well, all
the models are doing it and all the top

fashion magazines are doing it and it
looks beautiful. And if it's done

I suddenly thought, well, it looks nice.
I mean, it can look very, very crude as

well, but if it's done nicely, I don't
think there's anything wrong with it.

I think it's very essential to get as
much publicity as possible and certainly

photographic layout, if the photographs
are good, of course.

will certainly help.

Well, I came here four years ago, it
must be. It was spread in Penthouse,

I did.

I really do think that started me off,
in a way, because I still think if I

didn't come here to do that, I'd be in
Norway now, being a model, you see.

I think it's rather beautiful, really,
nudity, if it's done properly, with

lovely lighting and a good photographer,
which is, of course, the most important

thing.

No matter how good a girl looks, we'll
do a test on it.

And the test is very important.

They're not glamorous photographs to
begin with. Based on that, we know how

photograph a girl. We know what angles
to avoid, what angles to look for. But

since we first started it, even a test
session has become a more sophisticated

deal.

We always have music when we work.

There's several things. One, it helps to
de -inhibit the girl, thereby giving

her personality a way out.

And also, it gives you automatically the
different body angles that you need,

the different studies that you need, to
determine how the final session is going

to go.

With a beautiful bird coming to you.

She looks absolutely marvelous, and the
breast is just all there.

Let's take her clothes off and it's
everything on the floor. So you must

that it's really, she really looks
beautiful. The body is just right.

It's tight and it's young and it looks
good.

You know, it just looks perfect.

We get something like a hundred letters
a week.

Everything from Polaroid pictures of
some of the most incredible looking

you've ever seen. I mean, absolutely
unpublishable, unprintable women taken

Polaroid cameras by husbands and
boyfriends and so on.

And then we get, and out of this lot,
interestingly enough, we get very, very

few contenders.

Very few girls that would even bother to
test the photograph.

I would say out of every hundred girls
that we look at, we might test two or

three.

Out of every 10, 15, we use one.

The first time I took my clothes off, I
was so nervous.

I didn't know what to do with myself.

It must have been really bad.

I'm sure that the photographs must have
been terrible because I was very, very

nervous and shy.

I don't think it really worries them
when they come in that they have to

off because if they've made it this far
anyway, they're already half inclined to

do the photographs anyway.

And then I became very free and very
relaxed and I felt very natural in the

have any on at all.

We have a lot of luck with kids that
come out of nowhere.

We take a girl that looks fairly
ordinary in the streets, but because she

nice features and because she's got
basically a good shape, nice hair, we

set -up with Revlon in this country, and
we'll send a girl down there and she'll

get a full glamour treatment.

I live in Harlow, which is a very dull,
boring place, and I was looking for some

excitement, so I thought, right, I
should go to London, where somebody

that it might be a good idea to go
around and see some photographers.

I'm a bit nervous about it, I think.

You know, I don't really know what sort
of people I'm going to meet there or

anything else.

But I'm the sort of person I'll try
anything once, so I'll have a go.

I think we could have fun with these
lashes and... A young page like yours

take a great make -up.

You'll have to spend ages trying to get
the shadow back off the eyelashes.

I haven't got any hang -ups about posing
in the nude.

because I'm, you know, I'm very broad
-minded. There again, you know, I think

it's going to depend on what the
pictures look like.

If they're good pictures, then I should
be quite happy.

I'll tell you what I do.

You know, usually when you see the other
kind of, any other men, I think,

because you're kind of very posy, you've
got them straight up and down.

The way I want it is to be very gentle,
very kind of just you and yourself.

Just hold yourself.

Try to touch yourself.

Nice. Look at the body.

Kind of open it to me.

Open it. More. More. More.

I mean, they mind us. You might as well
have the bodies, but cut the heads off.

And I don't think that it's just the

look at pictures of naked ladies. I

mean, I quite like to look at pictures

I think we present real women very
nicely indeed. We idolise them, we don't

exploit them.

Another great source of girls for us are
girls who achieve a certain degree of

fame through international beauty
contests. And we're about to shoot Miss

Ireland.

Well,

I was asked to do it probably about ten
months ago, but I just flatly refused. I

wouldn't even discuss it, money,
anything else. It just wasn't me. I

thought I could never go back to Ireland
if I do something like this. I mean if

you'd offered me ten thousand pounds a
few months ago I would definitely have

said no.

I always had it in my mind that it was
so obscene and it just wasn't right.

But I think that times have changed so
much that nowadays it's just sort of a

normal everyday thing.

I just can't imagine what it's going to
look like in the magazine but you know

if they come out like some of the
pictures I've seen I'll be very very

about it. Just the fact of what Other
people and my family at home are going

things that worries me.

And, you know, they just don't go along
with this sort of thing. I mean, the

magazine is actually banned over there,
so maybe it doesn't present a problem

anyway if they don't get it. My mother
will probably take it quite well. She'd

probably think of it as another sort of
fashion modelling job.

And I think my father will probably have
an instant heart attack.

My father was thrilled to bits when I
did the pictures. I think it's

He's got a butcher shop and he was
showing everybody the pictures that I,

know, did in Yugoslavia.

I thought my family would have been a
little bit upset, a little worried about

me appearing new, but they weren't at
all.

Well, it's just a job, isn't it? Oh, my
mother, she thinks it's all right.

But my father, he don't know because
he's a little bit old -fashioned, you

I don't tell him.

More discipline is needed in the home.

I often wonder what their mothers think
about what their daughters are doing.

Oh, they're entirely unconcerned about
it.

Because I've done one before.

I asked my mother, I said, look, I've
been approached to pose in the nude.

And she said, well, if you really want
to do it.

I said, well, yes, I think so.

She said, fine, but we won't tell your
father.

My mother, um, you know, she's very
narrow -minded, and I think the first

she ever saw a picture like that, she
thought that the only type of girl was

do tramps.

I wouldn't think anyone would ask her
to, actually.

I think my father just thinks, well, if
I want to do it, then that's fair enough

with him, you know.

If a girl wants a pose, you can't stop
them. My mother knows that I've done the

penthouse layout, but my father doesn't.
I wouldn't dare tell him.

My mind suddenly started wandering to
what my mother would think if she could

see me doing these poses and what the
people in the bank and my sister and

everyone who knows me would think.

And then suddenly I'd hear the
photographer say, come on, Veronica,

know, and I realised that I was looking
all miserable because of the thoughts

that were going through my mind.

I didn't mind posing with this man
because, you know, he was very nice and

done it all before and he knew how to
calm me down sort of thing.

You know, I was a bit scared because he
was lifting me up and throwing me over

his back, you know, facing downwards.

And I was sitting on his shoulders.

Yeah, it always seemed so odd because
I'd never seen pictures like that

It was something completely different.
And I kept on thinking what my mum would

think if she could see me, you know.

You can't get away from it. Young girls
are very susceptible. They're very

stupid. I'm not opposed to them. I don't
mind, really. But it depends what mood

I'm in.

I should imagine.

Would you let your wife close the news?
I haven't got a wife. I'm not married.

Bachelor. I think if it was me wife, I'd
have a different... You know, I

wouldn't let all the other blokes just
be staring at it all the time.

I'd be jealous, I suppose, but as it's
your sister, you don't worry. All my

brothers, they think I'm very clever and
they like it, but I

think they don't like it when there are
men on their office day.

Say, hey, is that your sister?

Oh, you know, so nice.

Oh, my brother.

I've only one brother, actually, who
really thought he was a very super

photograph.

And he wished I wasn't his sister.

I don't think there's anything wrong in
it.

I think she's doing what she wants to
do. She's a bit of an exhibitionist.

Girls do it for money.

Do it because it's a stepping stone to
success.

Because it gets them into show business,
films.

But I think the real reason why a girl
does it is because she wants to.

She wants to take her clothes off.

I don't think I am an exhibitionist. I
can't say the word.

I think in a way I must be an
exhibitionist because I did enjoy having

pictures taken and I like wearing low
-cut dresses and I suppose I am, yes.

What if... Always getting the money that
they're getting for doing it, I'd do it

as well. I think I'm a small
exhibitionist, yes, but then I think all

I think they must have black sparrows.
No, I'm not an exhibitionist because I

think I'm normal, and yes, I'm really
normal.

Of course I am.

I think all women are actually
exhibitionists anyway, and all men are

so they fit together like keys in locks,
so it all goes together quite well. The

only thing over here in England, there's
no pubic hair allowed.

I think that makes it that little bit
more erotic. We made pubic hair legal.

Oh, no, not pubes. I don't think it
looks ugly.

I think it's much nicer if it's covered
up.

No, I wouldn't be upset one day showing
my public hair.

I think a picture can be a lot more
attractive, a lot sexier, with at least

something covered up. I mean, you're
completely exposed.

Well, to me, it's nothing.

There is too much sex in the world now,
and...

I mean, it's a bit degrading.

It's up to the individual whether or not
he wants to degrade himself.

They've got a tasty body and they're
getting a few quits a shower. You can

them. Well, they go a bit too far
sometimes, don't they? They go a bit

far. We don't know how far we can go.

Perhaps we can go all the way, whatever
that is.

But as we go, as we get there, we'll get
there always with taste.

I'm topless, I'm not completely nude.

And I am in character.

And the nudity is not sexy.

It's just natural.

In the film studio, of course, it's very
much harder.

Electricians, a producer also floating
in the background.

And there you are, you're required to
take your clothes off in front of all

these people. And for the first time, it
can be slightly unnerving.

In the beginning it was almost
impossible to get girls to do center

But now it seems that it's almost an
important, almost

necessary step for a girl to get into
show business.

Doing a photographic session would
definitely help my career to a certain

extent. If my photograph appears in
print with my name beneath it, obviously

someone is going to see it.

And maybe a director might see it and
say, oh, yes, that's the sort of type

like to meet.

I really believe in old -fashioned
publicity.

You know, if you want to make it, you go
on all the time. You take photos,

photos, photos of today.

You know, otherwise they will keep on
using your old -fashioned terrible

you know, and you just look all wrong.

Ever since the beginning of time, any
woman who has been a model for an artist

has always been looked on as a loose
woman.

Take... Simonetta, the most famous model
that ever was, that was the model for

Venus rising from the foam for
Botticelli, the most beautiful girl that

existed. She died when she was 23.

She was living in sin in those days,
which was considered very wrong, with

several very important people at the
time.

Now, I'm not going to say that every
girl who pictures in the magazine is a

loose girl, but it's the first step
towards what used to be called loose

£250 seems like a hell of a lot of
money, especially to somebody who hasn't

any.

But there's so much work you have to put
into it. I mean, first of all, you've

got to think about, well, shall I do it
or shan't I do it?

Then you have to take the test session,
which you don't get paid for anyway.

The whole session is spread over about a
month, and during that period, you're

sort of at their beck and call.

When I personally work with a girl, I
try to react toward her as if the camera

didn't exist, as if it were just she and
I alone in a situation.

It's not just learning to put a girl at
ease, but it's learning to get in tight

emotionally with a girl to get a real
response from her.

You've got to make her feel something
for you.

The one thing that you can't fake, even
with makeup and great hair styling, is

her face. It's the first thing I look
for. In the case of Vida, as you can

she has a very lovely face, an easy face
to work with. She's got good

expression. She can smile on cue when
you want her to.

She follows direction beautifully.

Quite honestly, I don't think going in
the centre spread really leads anywhere.

I mean, you can have a lot of work, say,
for a year, but nothing that really

interests you.

I mean, I'd like to be an actor. I've
never got the patience to study at it or

anything else.

You've got to be very clever in what you
accept and what you don't accept,

whether it's going to do you any good or
whether it's going to really muck you

up.

I expect in three years from now I shall
most probably be at home with my... I

expect I'll have children by then and
I'll get into the regular routine of

washing nappies and doing the ironing
and I'll just be a general housewife

knowing me.

I think that's the way I'm made.

I don't think anything marvellous will
be happening to me in three years' time.

I'll just be a normal housewife doing
the shopping every day and the washing

everything else.

I'd like to think it could be different,
but I don't think it will.

I've got no big ideas about it.
