Today in Bermuda -
a disgruntled detainee...

...a mysterious crash with
a missing driver...

It's an elderly male,
somewhere in his 80s.

They have experienced some
sort of medical episode.

...and a heated exchange
on the water.

- On the same base.
- Stop, stop your boat.

You're walking away from MY officer?

You need to stop your boat, please.

Bermuda - an island paradise
surrounded by crystal clear waters

and home to thousands of luxury
hotels and beach-side residences.

But for those arrested here,
there's only one place to go -

Hamilton Police Station,

where the country's sole
custody suite is located.

All day, officers are brining
in detainees for processing.

And I told you what would happen
if you start, like, messing around

and giving false information. Huh?

And on duty today is Police
Constable Miss Carol Skerritt,

who's at the start of her eight-hour
shift as the custody officer.

No-one go home from this
area on my watch.

Cos this is a highly-secure area.

She's been providing bed
and breakfast for detainees

for 18 years.

We are Hamilton Police Station,

not Hamilton Princess, the hotel.

This is one of our lovely stalls.

It may be no frills...

Of course, we give our detainee

a mattress to lie on.

...with a limited menu.

The luscious meals
that we have here.

This one is sausage and mash.

Happy detainee
is a happy custody area.

But Officer Miss Skerritt
is nonetheless proud of

the provision here, and will never
tolerate difficult guests.

You've got the property for
the guy who was sent over?

Yes, I gave his property
to Detective Hollis.

With over 2,000 arrests each year,

custody welcomes in and processes
around six detainees every day,

who can spend up
to 48 hours in the cells.

One detainee has been brought
in overnight

on an assault charge.

Can you put on your shoe for me, please?

And he's on a permitted call
to notify a family member

of his situation.

Officer Miss Skerritt's shift
is already heating up.

Can you discontinue that call,
and we'll have a conversation?

I'm not having
a three-way conversation.

Yes, but you're not...

Mis...

That's you, but I'm not having
a three-way conversation,

so finish the call with your
father, and then, we will talk.

The detainee wants the next
court session -

but without entering a plea,
he can't,

and his frustration
turns aggressive...

- This morning was plea court.
- So...

You have to be in plea court,
which you will plea to the

information on the charge sheet,
which we'll give to you.

The plea could either be guilty
or not guilty.

...and with language
Officer Miss Skerritt

will not find acceptable.

comes with the territory.

And, with years of experience
under her belt,

Officer Miss Skerritt
takes it all in her stride.

Thing that police have
to go through.

But I guess it's my job.

And, as I clearly say in my first,

- it's in my DNA.
- Yeah.

So, I was built for
this kind of thing.

This doesn't rattle me. You just...

I just do what I gotta do
and move on.

A few floors up at
Hamilton Police Station,

Brit detective Constable Nick Akle
has spent five years rising quickly

through the ranks to the
Criminal Investigation Department,

tackling Bermuda's
most serious crimes.

It's been a crazy, crazy month.

Burglaries, airport jobs,
matters of national security.

Yeah. So, we do everything.

He's partnered today with
Detective Constable Quincy Fevriere.

Quincy, to his friends.

Since he's joined CID from uniform,

he has become to realise that
we work constantly, crazy, 24/7.

If those demands weren't enough,

Detective Nick also volunteers
in the Bermuda Police Service,

which he does in addition
to his work as a detective.

So, today, apart from being
super busy as usual in CID,

another role I fulfil is
Family Liaison Officer

between victims of crimes
and families who have,

unfortunately, experienced a death.

At the minute,
I have a victim's property in here,

and I would like to return it
back to the family today.

I think one of the requirements
you do need to be

a Family Liaison Officer
is to have empathy with people,

and just understand what they're
going through, to an extent.

Let's crack on, then,
in that case.

I think the Family Liaison Officers
are pretty much one of

the unsung heroes in
the Bermuda Police Service.

Most of the people who do it,
do it out of the goodness

of their own heart and they want
to help people, which is...

...which is all about policing,
really, at the end of the day.

Helping families in their darkest
moments is something he's used to.

Before I became a police officer
and moved here,

I used to work in cancer care.

I used to look after
cancer patients.

I tried to help people when I was
in England doing that last job.

And now, I get a chance
to actively help people.

So, yeah, that's a good motivation
for me for all of this.

Detective Nick's task
to return the belongings

is always a challenging one.

But as a Brit in Bermuda,

navigating the roads is
the first obstacle.

I think it's down this way.

One of the issues I have of
being a foreigner here

is finding where I'm supposed
to be going half the time.

And you've been here
for seven years now?

I've been here for five years
but, yeah, I'm...

Dude, I used to get lost on
the Tube back in England.

They find the right address
and prepare themselves for

the difficult task of returning
the deceased's belongings

to their loved ones.

It was important for me
to personally return that property,

just to show them I'm there
for whatever they need.

I just met with the victim's family.

And for the people left behind,
it's always very difficult.

But, yeah, they're doing well.

The family's going to take a short
trip to get out of Bermuda,

just to chill out for a little bit.

But, yeah, he was very happy
to get his...

...his family member's property back.

It's always a sad one
when you're dealing with the family.

But again, as long as we're there
and they know that we're there

to help them with
whatever they need.

It was a tough task -
but one, unfortunately,

that Detective Nick
has become used to.

I'm OK. See, listen, I'm quite used
to all this kind of stuff.

I look at it as swallowing
my personal feelings

for a little bit, get the job done,

then I can deal with it
afterwards... walking the dog.

Anything ever wrong in my life,
walk the dog,

I always feel much
better afterwards.

Community policing in Bermuda
means staying visible

in key hot spot areas
around the island,

busy with tourists visiting
from around the world.

Over in the west of the island
at Somerset Station,

experienced police constable,
Rajiv Bailey, is at the start of

his eight-hour shift.

Ticket books.

My pocket notebook...

He's partnered today with
Police Constable Krislyn Lambert.

We are all good to go.

Gotta suit up.

Are you comfortable?

That's the thing.
I just feel like I'm so short!

- OK, I'm good.
- Sorted?

- So, Kris, we're going to head
to Dockyard now.
- OK.

- We're going to do some
high-visibility patrol.
- OK.

I've been a police officer
for 18 years now.

I'm a joker.
I'm definitely a practical joker,

but I am serious when
it's time to be.

I can't always be the bubbly guy
on the street, have to kind of

portray that police officer,
you know?

That serious face, that dad face.

HE CHUCKLES

Sounds like a good day today.

The officers are heading
up to Dockyard,

Bermuda's busiest port,
and a gateway for both cargo

and thousands of tourists each week.

So, like, you know,
cos I'm not as seasoned as you.

Right. What's that supposed
to mean? I'm old?

No, it just means, you know,

you've got a lot more wisdom
on the job than I do.

- Wisdom, OK, we'll go...
- Respectfully.

- ...we'll go with wisdom.
- Yeah, I appreciate it.

When it comes to cruise ships,
you know, what's the worst thing

you've found on a person?

I've had a customs officer
turn something over to me that

she thought was crystal meth,

and it ended up being rock candy.

Erm...

I've always joked with Krislyn,
I call her my Padawan, you know?

I'm her Jedi, she's my Padawan,

and one day, she's going to be
a Jedi herself, right?

- So, Kris, being two years
with the job now...
- Mm-hm.

...full-time,
is it what you expected?

I think I've always been
open-minded with the job in itself,

especially when no two days
are the same.

And today is no exception.

Their routine patrol is quickly
interrupted by an emergency call

from the far side of the island.

SIRENS WAIL

So, we've got a report of
a single-vehicle RTC,

which is a road traffic collision.

Erm, however, the circumstances
around this collision

are a bit peculiar.

Erm, the only information
we have right now is that

it's as a result of some sort
of a medical emergency.

With the situation unclear,

Officers Rajiv and Krislyn

must get to the scene
as quickly as possible.

They arrive to find an abandoned car

that's collided into a wall,

but it appears the driver
is nowhere to be seen.

So, they just left?

Let's figure it out.

With no eye witnesses,

piecing together what's happened
won't be straightforward.

The first port of call
is the Fire Service,

who were first on the scene.

- You didn't get a first name, then?
- I didn't get anything.

- All right, appreciate you, bro.
- Yeah.
- Cool.

There are times
when you get to a scene,

and you have absolutely no idea
what's taken place.

You try to piece together certain
things, like, what happened?

Was this where this happened?

Or was this where this happened?

And sometimes, just
that curiosity can help you to

piece something together to
make a better picture.

So, the only information
we can go off of right now is

it's an elderly male,
somewhere in his 80s -

we'll confirm that information -

that was coming to
the doctor's office.

And at some point,
when they pulled in,

they have experienced some
sort of medical episode,

whether that's seizure or...

...hopefully not too much
worse than that.

They turn their attention to
the abandoned vehicle,

looking for more clues.

The vehicle is registered.

Our next course of action is
we'll try and identify

who the driver was...

...and, erm, if they're
doing all right.

The crash scene offers few answers,

and it's now up to
Officers Rajiv and Krislyn

to unravel what happened and
track down the missing driver.

Back at Hamilton Police Station,

Officer Miss Skerritt
is midway through her shift,

and paying close attention to
her disgruntled detainee.

Would you like a cup of tea?

Yes, I have ginger tea.

OK, I'll bring you
a pack of ginger tea.

That's my property, right?

OK, you're welcome.

So, my detainee just asked
for a ginger tea.

I have some sachets of ginger here,

and I'll give my detainee a pack
of tea to keep them happy

while he's there.

The man has had some time
to calm down -

and she's doing everything in
her power to keep him that way,

even offering him her personal
stash of ginger tea.

This is my favourite ginger tea.

That's why I have it in abundance,

so I have enough that
I can share with my detainee

to keep him happy.

I've brought you the cup of tea.

Firm on the rules,
fair on the care.

Drink the hot tea.

I don't want to hear
nothing from you again

- Yeah.

Back from their liaison duties,

Detectives Nick and Quincy return
to an unusually quiet station,

so they decide to check in

on the state of play in custody.

- PC Skerritt, how are we?
- I'm awesome.

Now you're here, I'm better.

PC Skerritt...
she's a very interesting character.

When I first came out of training
school, I was with PC Skerritt

for three months - it was
the best training I ever had,

but I didn't have a lunch break
for three months,

- did I, PC Skerritt?
- Yes.

I do see PC Skerritt as a mentor.

She's an excellent police officer,

she knows the law inside out,

she's very, very hard working.

You taught me very well, didn't you?

- The Oracle.
- The Oracle of Bermuda, yeah.

Policing's in her DNA.

OK, and what's the reason for your
visit today in custodies, officers?

A, to come and check
who's in custody today,

- and see what's going on.
- OK.

And B, to check on your welfare,
ma'am.

All right, we have
one person to be interviewed.

Are you guys here

Detective, er, Harvey's going
to come down and do that for you,

so we've organised that
for you today.

She is the intelligence
mistress of Bermuda.

If I want to know who it is
or where they are,

or what relationship they're having,

or what colour car they've got,

ask Skerritt, because she WILL know.

Sticking to the rules and the strict
security protocols of custody

are paramount for prisoner safety,

and something Officer Miss
Skerritt takes very seriously.

Every time I arrest someone here,

one of the main things I say,
when I come in here, I go,

"Listen. The only word of advice
I can give to you,

"apart from all the legal stuff -
be nice to PC Skerritt."

PC Skerritt, yeah,

PC Skerritt definitely
gives me tough love.

One of the tactics I do use is
to feed her sandwiches

on a regular basis.

You want a sandwich today,

Anything to keep you happy,
PC Skerritt.

I'm OK, but don't forget
my sandwich.

On Bermuda's island paradise,

being out on the water
is a way of life.

And it's the job of
the Bermuda Police Service,

working hand-in-hand with
the coastguards,

to help keep everyone safe.

Out on patrol today is
Police Constable Hugo Benziger.

He's been jet-ski policing for
the past eight years.

I love being on the water.

So, even if it means you're
in uniform and you're, you know,

it's a hot day and you're sweating,
it's still enjoyable,

and looking after other people.

I like assisting, I like supporting,

I like giving service -
and to me, that's a big thing.

You have a lovely day, OK?

- Just saying hi.
- Thank you.
- Hi!

Just very much focused on
looking after people,

trying to be as professional
as possible,

trying to be polite, kind.

And for Officer Hugo, keeping up
with the legal requirements

is another big part of his job,

as Bermuda has one of the highest
boat ownerships in the world.

Hey, guys, how are you doing?
Is that your vessel?

Having a registration on
a boat in Bermuda is important,

because you actually know the boat
is registered to a person,

you know who's in ownership
of that boat,

whether it's involved
in a collision.

Erm, it's also having
to pay your tax.

Just making sure everybody's
got a sticker on today.

You know, the red one.

Oh, no, I see it, down there.

You're having that good kind of
conversations about why people

have done something,
giving them advice, but also,

having that discretion and,
if you need to write a ticket,

write that ticket.

Just ask you for a signature. It
doesn't mean you're guilty or not.

It just says you've
taken your ticket.

Despite the $50 ticket,
Officer Hugo's approach means

the boaters take it in good spirits.

But not every encounter on
the water is met in

the same laid-back Bermudian style.

So, there's a very small fraction
of boaters on the water

who are not as pro-police
or pro-coastguard as you'd like.

And it's not long before
Officer Hugo spots another boat

he suspects may not be
legally up-to-date.

Hey, boss, how are you doing?

Just thought I'd check for, erm,
you know, the sticker...?

So, it's on your front bow, is it?

Just on your front bow?

It's... not this year at all.

It's 2019, boss.

OK. Let's...

These guys are going to do
a check on you, OK,

to make sure you have.

While he has a sticker, it's
displaying six years out of date -

but the boat owner is insistent.

- Er, ticket the, er...
the licence is from 2019.
- OK.

You need a ticket book, or...?

Do you want to just check
he's actually got one?

May we get a reg check?

Whilst his colleague from
the Coastguard, Matthew Stephens,

runs the check, Officer Hugo
questions the boat owner.

OK, just to explain -
so what we're doing,

we're just checking to
make sure whether or not

you have registered it, OK?

You're sure you have?

- Reg received - not finding
anything in government database.

And it's not good news
for the man onboard,

as he hasn't registered his
boat for six years.

Hold on a second, buddy, so...

It is in fact registered,
so thank you for that,

that's a good start.

The issue is is that you haven't
registered it since 2019,

and it is August,
as you can appreciate,

and everybody else has their
sticker on, you know?

And I appreciate that, but you can
appreciate that everybody else

- has their sticker on, and so,
that is an issue, OK?
- Yeah.

- So, I'm going to write you a ticket,
OK, it's...
- For my boat?

Yeah, it's not displayed,
that's the issue.

And while Officer Hugo
writes the $50 fine,

the boat owner is trying
to give him the slip.

Buddy, just stop, stop your boat.
Put your boat in neutral for me.

Put your boat in neutral

OK, look, we're going to issue
this ticket, then we can discuss

that a little bit later, OK?
But right now you're walking away

from MY officer - you need
to stop your boat, please, OK?

Luckly, Coastguard Matt
is on hand for backup,

and soon puts a stop to his getaway.

Wherever necessary, you need
to enforce the rules, the law,

and to make sure people are safe
and abide by what is expected.

Going to give you the ticket, OK?

You don't want to be a killjoy,

but if you have to, you do.

Officers Rajiv and Krislyn
are at a mystery crash

in the west of the island.

With no witnesses
and an abandoned vehicle,

they're trying to uncover
who the driver was

and their whereabouts.

The crash site sits on land
owned by the local church,

and the site's caretaker has just
arrived on the scene.

- Are you a representative
from the church?
- Yes.

Good. Awesome, sir, how are you?

I am Constable Bailey.

So, obviously, you've seen
what's taken place, yeah?

He has helpful information
to identify the missing driver.

Everyone knows everybody, you know?
"Hey, that's Susan's son.

"I know him, yeah, he works
at the gas station," you know?

- All right. Any questions for us?
- Not really.

Well, I want to know
if he's OK, that's all.

So, with the driver of
the car identified and

his whereabouts confirmed
at Bermuda's only hospital...

...the officers head to the
next of kin for a welfare check

and to gather more evidence.

His condition is in question
at the moment.

He is not responsive,

unconscious,

don't know his disposition
at this stage.

So, what we need to do is just
to make sure that the family

are aware of how urgently
they're needed at the hospital.

Yeah, some people...
I mean, responses vary.

I mean, like I said,
policing in paradise,

but then, you get those jobs
when you go and...

...people are crying on you.

It was apparent that he had
some sort of a medical episode.

Which caused him...

He DOES have seizures?

So, when's the last time
he had a seizure?

In April.

- I think it's pretty important...
- Yeah, I'll get, erm...

...that you go down there
and speak to the doctors.

Yeah, I would look into it,

just for the safety of himself
and others, yeah.

She was nonchalant, she was like,
"He's a big man.

"He can come home when he's ready."

All right. Have a nice day, ma'am.

The officers have done all they can,

tracking down the missing
driver and family,

and uncovering what led
to the crash.

- We've done our part.
- Right.

You know, we've gone,
we've told the family,

- "Hey, this is what's happened."
- Right.
- You know?

And I think you did a good job,
you know, handling that situation,

so I could appreciate
that experience and guidance

during that time, so thank you.

A few days later, the Officers learn
the elderly man is doing well,

discharged from hospital,
and on the mend.

Detective Nick is on
a vital police mission.

I have to make sure I get
PC Skerritt a sandwich -

otherwise, I'm in serious trouble,

and it wouldn't be worth living.

But I don't mind feeding her.
As long as Skerritt's happy,

then the rest of Bermuda
can rest in peace.

It may not fall under
his regular work remit,

but Detective Nick knows
the precise order well.

Today, she will be having a
turkey club on white

without any tomato.

- Bonjour.
- Bonjour.

- Can I just get my usual sandwich,
please?
- Oui, yes.

- Yeah, and a cup of tea,
as well, please.
- Yes.

Are you all good? No issues?

Yeah, everything is fine. Great.

- Anyway, cheers,
we'll see you later, yeah?

Detective Nick clearly knows
where his bread is buttered -

and the importance of keeping
Officer Miss Skerritt happy.

We can show everybody my gift.

My gift from PC Akle,
my club sandwich!

It looks like Detective Nick's
mission has been a success.

No, it's turkey.

Yeah, it is my lovely sandwich

from my son.

Oh, thank you, PC Akle.

She refers to me
as one of her children,

which I take as a very
high compliment.

She always says to me that
her children do very well.

But there's a rookie error
with a missing drink order.

And you brought my drink, too?

I didn't bring you a drink, ma'am.

- So, am I to drink water?
- You have to drink water, yeah.

This is not for
PC Skerritt's benefit,

it's for the benefit of all
prisoners in Bermuda,

to be honest with you -
otherwise, she gets hangry. Huh?

She is unique, that woman.

I am happy that my adopted work son,

DC Akle, bought my sandwich,

so I no longer will be
having a salad day today.

She IS unique.

Mm.

Mm!

And Officer Miss Skerritt is in
no doubt about her value

to Detective Nick.

I don't have any more favours
to return to him.

I made him who he is today.

I taught him everything he knows,

for which I'm proud of.

So, right now,
I'm reaping the benefits.

Pay for something
and don't get back change.

The drug squad investigate
a suspicious package.

I get very excited
when I see a print like this.

And the K9 unit are on tracking
training to sniff out crime.

He's got his head down now,

which means he's picking it up.
