Welcome to Bermuda,

an island in the middle of the
Atlantic.

This is paradise.

- A police service tackling crime...

- Looks like a home-made machete,
doesn't it?

- ..to keep this British Overseas
Territory safe.

- We've got a bike failing to stop.

- SHOUTING

- Right now, you're swearing at me and
that is disrespectful.

- Up close to investigations.

- One of the most dangerous drugs on
the market today. It's a killer.

- Is there extra pressure with it
being linked to a murder?

I'd say so.

- Catching criminals at the border...

- You are being placed under arrest on
suspicion of conspiracy

to import drugs into Bermuda.

- ..at the airport...

- K9 has shown interest in your bags.

- ..and on the water.

- You're walking away from my officer?

- Can you stop the boat, please?

- With the busy summer here...

- Can you get back, please? Go back.

- ..this is peak season for the
police.

- Go. Go, go, go, go, go.

- SIREN WAILS

- It's a canny view, innit?
- Mm-hm.

- In Bermuda today,

sniffing out suspicious cargo at the
airport...

- There's a good boy!

- ..lethal weapons seized at the
roadside...

..and a man of mystery...

- And you don't remember your name?

- ..proves a tough case to crack.

- I'm going to get you some help, OK?

We're going to solve it together, all
right?

- Bermuda is a small island community

where everyone looks out for each
other.

- You soon learn, as a young constable
in Bermuda,

that community is the pillar of
everything

and you have to be a community police
officer.

Everybody knows you, everybody knows
your name,

and expects you to pretty much be on
duty all the time.

- Can you take a picture with us?
- Yes, of course.

- You see everybody, you know
everyone,

there's people you recognise all the
time.

You know, 60,000 people - not a big
population.

- And it's not a young one, with one
in five islanders over 60.

- Most of our population is hitting
that elderly bit

where they need help.

In such a tight-knit community, we do
go out of our way to help people.

- From Somerset Police Station,

heading out in the community on a
12-hour shift is experienced officer

Police Constable Eddie Smith, who's
been in the force for over 30 years.

- I enjoy the job.

I enjoy making policing human.

Dealing with people is probably my
biggest joy.

- Today he's partnered with rookie
Police Constable Jameela Sabir.

She completed her training just a few
months ago.

- I've been lucky to work with a lot
of seasoned officers,

so I feel like I'm just taking in
everything.

I'm like a sponge. I'm trying to get
all the information.

I would say my favourite thing about
policing would be

investigating stuff, like, getting to
the bottom of incidents.

I also do enjoy speeding in the cars
as well!

- SHE LAUGHS

- That is fun!

- On the agenda today is stop and
search, also known as 315F checks,

which do often result in some alarming
discoveries.

- Basically, we can pull over any car,
any bike,

and we can search them.

A big thing that we find are knifes.

A lot of people carry knives.

I was very unaware how much people
have weapons on them.

That was something that was very
shocking to me.

- They set up a checkpoint on one of
the island's main roads.

Eddie carries out the first stop.

- Whiskey Three, Oscar Five. Can I get
a check on a motorcycle?

How you doing today, chief?

- OK.

- Just confirm - black Honda ADV 150.

Almost every check that we've done or
operation we've carried out,

we have seized a weapon.

- ON RADIO:
- Yeah, 10-4.

- Thank you, chief. Appreciate you,
man. Have a safe one.

We made a few stops. Stopped quite a
few vehicles.

They were fine.

- OK, so...

- And they're also joined by Sergeant
Mervin Homer.

So far, today's searches have all been
clear.

- So if you do get stopped by other
police officers,

you just show them that. Thank you so
much.

- Then Sergeant Mervin makes a
discovery.

The man he stopped has nothing on his
person,

but a search of his bike uncovers a
dangerous weapon.

- A knife was found in his bike seat.

- The knife was a double switchblade.

Carrying it is against the law.

The man seems unfazed by what the
officers have found,

but he will be placed under arrest and
his lethal weapon seized.

- It can cause some severe damage.

It's a scary-looking item.

- Cars were not permitted in Bermuda
until 1946.

And even now, only residents can
drive.

And for Sergeant Milton Joshua Hill,
there's only one way to get around.

- What I love about being on the bike
is that independence.

You're out in the hot weather, you're
enjoying the island,

you've got the kind of wind in your
hair, or lack thereof!

- Today, Sergeant Milton's patrolling
the central parishes

of Pembroke and Warwick.

- Every day is a fishing day, but not
every day is a catching day.

The idea is that you should be out
there looking,

but you're not always going to find
it, right?

Before you drive off next time, all
right?

- He hopes any brush with the law

will make road users think twice about
safety.

- I want more than catching people is
a change in behaviour.

How you doing, mate? If you could turn
your car off for me, please.

Stopping things, talking to people,

I try and do a little bit of education
with it.

Just be mindful. Just be kind of like
spidey sense going on

that any time anything's stopping at a
crossroad,

kind of slow down until you realise
why they're stopping, all right?

Sometimes that conversation will make
more impact on the person,

changing their behaviour, than just
getting a ticket.

Just thinking of that, drive a little
defensively.

- Before long, Sergeant Milton is
alerted

to a possible man in distress,

and he wastes no time getting to the
scene.

- How you doing, sir?

You OK?

I just want to make sure you're OK.

- An elderly man has been reported as
wandering lost and confused.

- Where do you live?

It was clear as soon as I started
speaking to him,

that this man doesn't know where he
is.

Can you point to your house?

What, you don't know where you live?

This elderly gentleman wasn't able to
tell me his name

and, in particular, wasn't able to
describe where home was.

Do you remember your birthday?

When's your birthday?

You don't remember your birthday? You
just said yes!

- Yeah.

- You remember what month it is?

What month's your birthday?

April? May?

You can't remember?

And you don't remember your name?

It always makes me worry to see
someone in that state,

so I knew I had to try and help him,

but trying to figure out how to get
him home was a challenge.

You appear to be a little confused
when you're talking to me.

- And leaving a vulnerable man near a
busy road isn't an option.

- I know I'm not leaving this man.

Like, until I find somewhere to take
him, he's not getting left behind.

- With no known name or address,

Sergeant Milton has a mystery on his
hands.

- I'm going to get you some help, OK?

We're going to solve it together, all
right?

- In the east of the island is
Bermuda's international airport...

..patrolled by Police Constable Paul
Watson, known as Geordie...

- Good to meet you, mate. How are you?
You good?
- Fine.

- ..whose trademark is his traditional
bobby's helmet.

- Yay!

- The British officer is a familiar
face

among regular passengers and cabin
crew alike.

He works on the ground with Customs
officers

to protect the community against drugs
coming onto the island.

- There's always been, as a port of
entry,

a small percentage of people bringing
drugs in,

and it is a small percentage for the
travelling passengers that we get.

- If drugs are found, the penalty is
severe -

up to 25 years in prison.

But Officer Geordie knows all too well

drug-runners take the risk for the
high pay-outs.

- You can buy cannabis in Canada and
the UK

for a reasonably small amount.

I think right now a small kind of poke
of weed is going for $50,

and so a lot of money can be made from
a very small amount of drugs,

and that's why people import it.

- A flight from Canada has just
landed.

INDISTINCT CHATTER

- How's it going?

He's ready to go.

- Customs officer Malcom Martin and
his sniffer dog Zorro

are sent in to search the cabin.

Speed is of the essence in the quick
turnaround.

Zorro is not only looking for
narcotics.

- Good boy!

- He's also trained to search for
firearms.

Any alert he makes is when police
officers step in.

- Customs always have primacy,

so they take the lead on anything
coming into Bermuda.

If they find any items that are liable
to seizure,

they'll give me a call or one of the
other officers in the unit a call.

- Good boy!

- In just five minutes, Zorro has done
a full sweep...

- Thank you, guys.
- Thank you.

- ..and given it the all clear.

With the luggage now off the flight,

Zorro is ready to begin his search in
the baggage area.

- You get to know the different
reactions to the different smells.

He's a very intelligent dog, this one.

Or at least probably more intelligent
than his handler!

- Out of the hundreds of bags on the
flight...

..there's one that's caught Zorro's
attention.

- There's a good boy!

Good boy, buddy!

- Moments later, another is also
identified.

- There's an odour to these bags
that's caught his attention.

- Malcolm photographs the bags,

then returns them to the conveyor
belt.

He must quickly alert Customs officers
in the terminal.

- So we have to put the bags back onto
the belt,

let them go back inside, see who picks
them up

and who claims the bags, and as they
go through Customs,

I'll let the officers know exactly
which ones,

which bags to keep, to focus in on and
stuff like that.

While we're doing that, as well,

keeping our eyes out for anybody
that's acting any sort of way

and giving off any signs of any
wrongdoings.

I've been doing this now for 16 years,
so it's... You get to see...

Things pop out, so you look for stuff
that's out of the norm.

Just being hyper aware of what's going
on.

- Malcolm spots the suspicious bags
being collected...

- Good to go.

- ..and heads for the Customs desk to
give them the signal.

- So once the passenger comes up,

I'll quietly just tell this officer
that they're obviously here.

The unsuspecting passengers are in
sight.

- With the bag owners identified...

- Guys, we're going to get you to go
this way to see an officer.

- ..they are taken to the control area
to be searched.

- So, sir, I don't feel comfortable
leaving you here

if you're not able to tell me, like,
who you are and where you live, OK?

- Sergeant Milton has been called to
the side of the road

to assist an elderly male who appears
confused and vulnerable.

- I've got to make sure you're all
right, OK?

I have a duty of care to make sure
you're OK,

and you appear to be a little confused
when you're talking to me.

I'm trying to help you get home.

So I'm in a bit of a bind because I
don't want to leave this person

on the side of the road. I want to
make sure he gets home safe.

I'm trying to get to know you.

But I cannot identify where he lives,
who he is.

Do you like sitting right here?

This is one of your, um...spots you
like to hang out?

Yeah, Mike Three to Oscar,

my 10-30 is Glebe Road near Bishop
Spencer Road.

I have an elderly gentleman here

who I fear might be suffering a bit of
memory loss.

Do you have four wheels that maybe can
try and assist and maybe can try

and figure out where he lives and get
him back home?

You don't want to just have a seat

and wait for the car to give you a
lift home?

I've dealt with quite a few situations

with senior citizens going through
this.

In fact, my own grandfather is
starting to have

a little bit of dementia issues and
things,

so it is something that...helping them
is also of a personal nature

because I'm dealing with it in my
family as well.

Hey, Kim. Yes.

I'll take a picture. I can take a
picture

and you see if you know him cos he's
not able to tell me nothing.

- Sergeant Milton calls to base for
assistance.

- But, yeah, send a picture.
- OK.

So I've got some other people that are
going to try and see

if they can find out where you live,
OK?

So I'm going to send them a picture of
you, OK?

We're trying to help each other.

Policing in Bermuda is much more about
service and helping people,

and our small community means that
people know

a lot of police officers personally as
well,

so it's easy to reach out. Like,
that's so common here.

Going to try and help you out, OK?

- It's a 25-minute wait for the squad
car,

but Officer Milton will stay with him.

- For me, personally, dealing with
vulnerable people,

I'll give you all the time in the
world.

If it goes over the end of my shift
and I'm still stuck with you,

I'm still stuck with you.

- But the man is getting restless.

- No, no, I have... I have a car
coming.

We're going to help get you home.

OK.

You want me to come sit down with you?

Would that make you feel better?

OK, I'll come sit down with you.

Come on, let's... Let's sit down.
We've got...

I've got a car on the way. You're
going to get a nice lift back home.

- No sooner does he sit down...

..when the man takes off,

walking down the middle of the road.

Concerned for his safety, Sergeant
Milton sticks with him.

- Yeah, Mike Three, Oscar Five.

Yeah, for your information,

the gentleman is now walking along
Bishop Spencer Road.

I'm going to follow him.

- As the man continues, Sergeant
Milton keeps close behind,

ready to alert oncoming traffic.

It's proving a tricky task, but
Sergeant Milton won't give up.

- He can't tell me where he is. I
don't know if he's close.

It wasn't going to be as simple as,

"Hey, sir, let me just walk you back
home."

But I'm going to go to the end of the
Earth

to try and help this guy out.

- Officers Eddie and Jameela have
found a dangerous weapon

on a rider during a routine stop and
search.

The man riding the bike where the
knife was found

is placed under immediate arrest.

- You're not obliged to say anything
unless you wish to do so, but

whatever you say will be taken down in
evidence and will be given...

- Shall I cuff him?
- Yeah, absolutely.

- So just go like this for me.

- He'll be transported directly to
Hamilton Station.

- Oh, this one's already...

- A knife with a blade over three
inches long counts as a weapon,

unless there's a good reason to be
carrying it.

- Are you the arresting officer?

- Two, like...
- One knife, two blades.

- One knife, two blades. Yeah.

- At the station, Custody Sergeant
Francis Blackman is on duty.

- Sir, just step forward and let me
speak to you, please.

- The man seems unfazed by the arrest.

- So the circumstances of this arrest,
as were relayed to me,

are officers were conducting a stop
and search operation,

and a search of your cycle revealed

a silver full-length pocket knife with
two blades.

Do you understand what I'm saying to
you?

- Yeah. I don't follow...

- Right. So, based on what they have
told me,

I am authorising your detention at
this time.

- The officers are reassured

that his knife will no longer be on
the streets.

- A knife like that can do a lot of
damage to somebody.

It can cause serious, even fatal
injury to an individual.

It's something I'd never seen before.

- It's concerning, you know, that
somebody even has something

designed like that in Bermuda.

- The confiscated knife will be held
as evidence

with other prohibited items amassed by
Sergeant Brian MacNab.

- These have all been seized at some
point in time.

Looking at some of the major things -
this samurai sword,

we don't have a lot of them coming in,
but occasionally they do.

- Other weapons are a more familiar
sight

for Assistant Commissioner Martin
Weekes.

- The classic machete.

- Yeah, it's been worn down a little
bit. There's been a chopped end.

But every gardener on the island has
one of these, I think.

- Has them for work, right.
- Yeah.

- But when you're carrying it down
your pants,

that's not what your intention is,
right?

Back in years gone by,

before we had the proliferation of
firearms on the island,

this was pretty much the weapon of
choice for our gangsters, wasn't it?

- It was all knives and machetes,
yeah.

- Yeah, machetes was the weapon of
choice for many, many years.

- And it's harder than ever to stop
these weapons

now they're bought and delivered
direct.

- You can go online and buy all kinds
of things,

but the point is you can't carry them.

And even these things, I'm sure you
can buy those online.

It's a nicely made one, but prohibited
nonetheless.

- It's not like drugs. We can't get a
dog to sniff out...
- No.

- ..you know, a multi...
- It's down to whether customs find it

at port of entry.
- Yeah.
- And that's what, of course,

our powers are designed to stop.

It's designed to search you in
anticipation of that violence

and find those weapons,

and that's often when we get this
stuff, isn't it?

- Today's stop and search operation
was a success.

- I often have told my team

we come to work and we go home with
the same amount of holes in us.

And a knife like that, I'm glad that
we seized it.

- The owner of the knife found was
released on bail

pending further investigation,

and although his lethal weapon is off
the streets,

the battle to keep this island
community safe is never done.

- Keeping Bermuda safe.
- Keeping Bermuda safe and beautiful.

- Always.

- At the airport, Customs officers are
preparing to search luggage

a sniffer dog identified as
suspicious.

- How are you doing, guys?
- Good. You?
- Good.

Step on through for me. I'll explain
everything to you in a minute.

The dog, the K9 just had some, um...

- The passengers are taken to the
secondary search area.

- Thank you, guys.

- Are you guys returning or visiting
today?

OK.
- Well, my wife's Bermudian.

- The couple are returning to Bermuda
from a trip to Canada...

- And anything to declare with Customs
today?

- ..and travelling with their son, a
university student.

- And the bags belong to you?

You're aware of all the contents in
your bags?

And you packed these bags yourself?

All right.

And no marijuana, weed, anything of
any kind?

- The parents' bags get the all clear.

But in Officer Geordie's experience,
the dog is rarely wrong.

- If the dog alerts, then Customs will
do their search.

I anticipate nine times out of ten
that something will be found.

- And sure enough, a search of the
son's backpack yields a result...

..packaging for a cannabis product.

But the package is empty.

- At some point when they've packed
them...

The packet is empty, but it's still a
cannabis product

and it still technically is illegal to
bring it into Bermuda.

If there'd been anything in it, it
would've been a different ballgame.

- Luckily for the son, with no illegal
substance present,

the family are free to head back home.

Sergeant Milton is on the case with an
elderly mystery man.

He's confused and can't find his way
home.

- It seems like he doesn't want
police's help,

however, he is unable to tell me any
details.

- It's been over 20 minutes since he
called into base,

circulating photos of the man in the
hope of identifying him.

- Yeah, Mike Three, photo sent to you.
Photo sent by WhatsApp.

You want us to help get you home?

Not yet?

- The confused man is still
struggling...

..and Sergeant Milton is concerned
about his safety.

And with the backup car arriving to
support...

..the officers encourage the man to
take the help.

- Can see he's resisting the lift.

You don't want to let them give you a
lift?

They can just give you a lift back
home.

That's the thing, you've got to be so
careful

because technically you could detain
him to try and take him back home,

but the last thing you want is you get
in a tussle

with an older gentleman like that. So
you're trying to use,

like, all your people skills you have
available.

- Finally, with a little time, the man
agrees to take the ride.

- Mike Three to Oscar, person's got in
the car with the Hotel unit,

so we're going to try and find his
house.

I'm hopeful when he gets close to
home, he's like,

"Oh, I live in that house." That's
what I hope for.

- As they set off, an update call
comes in...

- Hey, Kim.

- ..with more intel on the identity of
the man.

Someone at the station has recognised
him from the photo.

- Oh.

One sec, buddy, we might have a
breakthrough.

Someone recognises him as actually the
father of a police officer.

Do you remember having a daughter? Do
you have a daughter?

Sir?

She is police? Police officer
daughter?

She is police?

Yeah, yeah, that's your daughter,
right?

OK, she lives right around the corner.
I think this is her daddy,

so I'm going to try there.

Straight ahead.

- Sergeant Milton leads the way to the
officer's house.

But no-one's home.

Refusing to be beaten, Sergeant Milton
gets the colleague,

believed to be the man's daughter, on
a video call.

- Hey. So, is this your father here?

OK.

OK.

All right, we figured it out.

OK, no worries.

We'll take him back home, now that
he's been ID'd.

All right, no problem. Take care.

The family was very appreciative that
he was brought back.

Your daughter's going to come see you,
OK?

That moment where I have a definitive
address,

I know we're at resolution and the
guy's going to be safe,

it is a big weight off your shoulders.

So Bermuda's size and being able to,
you know, send a picture out

and be like, "Hey, does anybody know
who this is?" and eventually

someone recognising them, is a very
uniquely Bermudian thing.

I think this saga is complete

Hey, mate, your helmet!

- All right, but don't get in that
habit.
