I've experienced so far!

Bermuda is policed by almost
400 officers,

with around 30 being Brits.

Being here is something
they've warmed to.

I used to hate the British weather,
I used to hate it.

I would have about five layers on
when I was patrolling.

And here it's just, like, seeing
the turquoise waters,

it does lift my mood.

We all have to do the laundry
and all that, but then you walk

out your front door and you're
looking onto a pink sand beach.

You do have to pinch yourself
sometimes.

The beaches are by far some of the
best in the world.

The ocean here's phenomenal,

at 100 metres of horizontal
visibility.

It's like swimming in gin,
it's beautiful.

It's like a little bit of home as
well, like, we have a Waitrose,

so it's a bit of home
but in paradise.

For Hugo Benziger,
life in Bermuda is a world away

from his previous job in the Met
and Kent Police.

If I had to describe Bermuda to
somebody, it would be,

it's beautiful, very friendly.

You can have a real kind of
millionaire's lifestyle

without being a millionaire.

You still work really hard, but
you're just not stuck on the M25.

His job is to police the water
alongside the coastguard.

So we'll go along the coast,

Going on a jet ski's brilliant,
and if the captain says that

I can go on the jet ski all the
time, oh, I'd be made up.

There's some crime on the water,
some boats that are stolen,

so there's some boats
that are broken into

and have things taken from them.

Just keep it five knots as close

But his day-to-day is ticketing
boaters for speeding,

no matter how impressive the vessel.

Cos you get a lot of wake
on the other sides, other boaters.

The nearest landmass to Bermuda is
the US, making the island

a favourite destination
for the seafaring super-rich.

Policing in Bermuda for the Brits is
not all riding jet skis

through turquoise waters.
There are challenges.

Brit officer Jen Suter is midway
through a 12-hour shift with

her colleague Sergeant Caleb
in the 35 degree heat.

It's just the summons I have to
serve.

If you don't show up,
they're going to issue a warrant.

Yeah, I'll be there. All right,
boss. Thank you. All the best.

I ended up in Bermuda
cos my parents moved out here.

I wanted a new challenge.

Part of which involves working
in sometimes scorching temperatures.

It's boiling.

Is it? I'm sweating.

No, sorry, I'm glistening,
not sweat.

The heat definitely can

The feeling of getting in the shower
after a 12-hour day,

especially if you've spent
a lot of time outside,

is probably the best...the best

Officer Jen's shift is about to
get even hotter.

She and Sergeant Caleb
are responding to

a report about a fire
on a nearby farm.

It was called
in as a controlled burn,

meaning they would've gotten, er,
permission from the Fire Service

to do it, but the caller is saying
that there is no-one in the area.

Clearly the area resident who
called, erm,

believed they'd been affected
by the toxins from the smoke.

Just last week, Sergeant Caleb went
to a similar unattended farm fire.

So he heads straight
back to the same farm.

Where was it last time, round here?

The burn pit is up there.

This is the burn pit. Erm, at the
moment we can't see any smoke,

erm, no signs of a controlled burn,
so we're just going to try

and make contact with the person
that owns the property.

We've got a call regarding
a fire at the farm

and some person's
complaining about smoke,

but we've just pulled up and we've
not seen any sign of anything.

Were you burning something earlier?

So it's definitely not here, right?

So they didn't have a fire here.

Sergeant Caleb calls in to base
to check out where the farm

with the fire might actually be.

we went to the last time.

So, this is the wrong location.

It turns out the correct farm is
seven miles away.

Thankfully, the Fire Service
already has it covered.

So we drove across where that
original scene should have been.

There may not be any fire here,
but it seems they'll be getting

hot under the collar capturing
some unusual escapees.

I didn't really expect the cows to,
like, run out of the gate,

but they did.

I was driving, so I'm going to say
that my sergeant forgot to close it!

Feeling the heat is former Brit
nurse Holly Lavigne-Smith.

She's in the thick of training to be
a new police recruit.

Going to be a hot, sweaty day.

and so running around in that outfit
whilst holding a shield...

Holly's lived in Bermuda for more
than three years.

My husband got an opportunity to
work in Bermuda

and at first
I said, "Where's Bermuda?"

But, obviously,
it doesn't take long to think,

"Oh, that might be quite
a nice place to live."

I've always
dreamed of being in the police

and never thought it was for me
because I know...I guess I'm quite,

I don't know, feminine?

The hard work in the heat may be
a lot for Holly,

but she's determined to
stick with it.

Even if training's now going
up to the next level.

and I put a lot of pressure
on myself to not only complete

the course
but to do it to a high standard.

My biggest fear during training was
that my dream was going to come

to an end very abruptly
and that I'd have to, erm,

walk away from something that I'd
wanted for my whole life.

The Bermuda Police Service fights
crime all over the country,

including at the International
Airport.

as an officer over 30 years ago.

He hails originally from the
north-east,

hence his nickname, Geordie.

I was 24 when I came out here.

Just somewhere for a young lad,
somewhere different.

An adventure in another till.

Its beauty, to me, is unparallelled.

Officer Geordie patrols
at the airport in a classic

Bermudian style.

absolutely adore it.

Officer Geordie's job is to keep
the 800,000 annual arrivals

into the airport safe from crime
and help keep illegal drugs out.

The common drug is cannabis.
The importation of drug here is

a problem, because the drug is
expensive when it's here.

£1,000 worth of drugs in the UK

is probably worth $50,000-60,000
here.

Officer Geordie gets a call
from customs that they've stopped

a couple from the US.

Afternoon, folks, how you doing?

I just have to ask first
and foremost, guys,

does the cannabis belong to
just you, sir?

And the young lady,
it's not hers at all?

OK. So, just listen to what I have
to say. Just to comply with the law,

I'm going to tell you that it's an
offence to import a controlled drug.

I'll tell you that you're not
obliged to say anything,

but anything you do say will be
taken down in writing

and may be given in evidence.

Is there anything you want to
say in response to that?

OK. So, right now, I'm going to tell
you that you're being arrested

for importation of
a controlled drug.

This suspect is saying that the
drugs are his,

but he did not know any better.

I got stopped at the airport
with a little bit of weed on me.

I thought it was
decriminalised, actually.

Nonetheless, rather than sunning
himself on a beach in Bermuda,

he's facing time in custody.

One of the perks of being a Brit
officer in Bermuda is being

able to enjoy its beaches
and bays on days off.

Officer Jonathan Wood,
known as Woody, originally

from Derbyshire, has fully embraced
the island's watery way of life.

The best views are from the water,
so it's my favourite thing to do,

is to come off the island
and get on the boat.

Everywhere around the entire
island, it's...you just never stop

looking at it really, whenever
you're travelling around,

and I still even get that now.

And it also just makes the island
so much bigger

when you can use the sea as well.

Today, he's with his Peruvian
girlfriend Daniele,

and it's a chance for her
to work on his pronunciation.

Baby, how do you pronounce my name?
Daniella.

You've been mispronouncing it for,
what, a year?

Daniele. Perfect. There we go.

Bermuda on the water is something
that Officer Woody will never

grow tired of.

When you're on your days off,
it does feel like you're on holiday.

Yeah. Especially in the summer,
which is

one of the reasons why
I came here in the first place.

I started looking into the place
itself and what was here.

The weather, the beaches,
and then when I got here, actually,

it was even better than it looked
on the pictures, it was amazing.

Occasionally you just look around
and it's just still brilliant,

even after seven years.

There's usually fish around here,
we can probably feed them

with this bag of crisps,
so that'll be about $5 worth!

There's tonnes of fish here.

Oh, my God!

What?!

Cos they know when they see
the boats that they're probably

going to get some food.

It's been a romantic day off on the
water for Officer Woody with

Daniele.

I'm just going to drop an anchor

And finally,
it's time for a cool down.

Former nurse, Holly Lavigne-Smith,
has finally qualified to become

a police officer in Bermuda,
after five months of training.

It is, honestly,

the best job in the world
and I just wanted to do it so badly.

When I found out I'd passed,
it was, honestly,

one of the best feelings
I've ever felt.

Today, Brit Holly is on her first
proper shift

as a police constable...

Oh, we can go get you some tickets
or something.

..under the wing of experienced
officer Moya O'Gilvie-Milwood.

I feel like I am a bit worried,
because looking at what you do,

I can't ever imagine
being in that place,

so I feel like that brings me
quite a lot of anxiety.

And it shouldn't because, trust me,
you're going to get there.

At some point you will get to that
stage where you're going to be

so good you're going to be a
tutor constable,

you may even be my sergeant.

No!

Their first call is to a house where
a police incident occurred

the night before.

Do you know what actually happened?

I believe there's just a suspicious
person who may have ran from police.

Oh, OK.

And left some property behind,
so that will possibly assist us

in getting DNA, or whatever we can,
to help identify the people...

OK. ..that were seen last night.

There's a dog.

But if the officers are to collect
the evidence they've come for,

the dog is the least
of their worries.

The homeowner is a beekeeper.

I was not planning on getting stung.

I got stung once and I do not want
to get stung again.

It appears that the person who
may have ran away from police,

may have came through this
yard and has dropped this helmet

and that bandanna right there, and
so it's just an assumption

that these persons would've ran
through here.

Thankfully, there wasn't any rain
last night, so hopefully we could

get something that we could use,
maybe DNA, something that

we could use to assist in
identifying who the person was.

As the senior officer on the ground,
Moya decides to step up.

Right, now, the bees...

..so I'm trying not to get stung.

I really don't like bees
and in our training, they tell you

all about all the, erm, dangers that
you're going to come across

and they never mentioned bees,
so that's, er, this is not fun!

I don't want to make these guys
angry.

She's new, she's kind of timid,

and I...I would not want to
see her get stung.

Would've been good to know that
there were bees on the property

and we needed to be careful.
Maybe I needed a hazmat suit!

That's probably the most scary thing
I've...I've experienced

so far and it was bees,
but, erm, yeah,

I'm not going to want to go back
there any time soon.

safety and they tell you about bees?

like, that you worry you will
come into contact with?

My irrational fear, it's, erm, like,
animals, like, especially,

like, I don't know, like,
monkeys or birds in human clothes.

The weirdest fear ever there is.

It was absolutely funny.

When policing in Bermuda,
expect the unexpected.

Back on the farm where Brit officer
Jen and Sergeant Caleb mistakenly

thought there was a fire, there
are some unusual escapees to catch.

let your cows out by accident.

I just want to get them

I didn't know how compliant
cows would be, so I was, like,

going through my head at the time

but my sergeant, obviously,
has dealt with cows before,

not that I knew. Come, guys!

Cow herding in Bermuda is
definitely something that I've

ticked off my list of things
to do in life!

Definitely a story to tell.

Yeah, like, cows are good like that.

They...they tend to respond to...to,
erm, human beings,

so you just direct them
and...they're domesticated animals,

they tend to do what you tell 'em.

I guess nothing really
surprises me any more.

Every escapee rounded up,

a bovine debrief.

We did good then, really.
A stroke...stroke of luck.

We did really good. So, I think...I
think I'm going to resign

and just become a farmer.

Well, if only it was that easy to
get people to comply with

instructions, right? Mm-hm.

Yeah, well, if a cow can do it,
anybody can, right?

Yeah, we're supposedly more
intelligent animals.

All right, so, I guess,
let's head back to the station then.

At Bermuda's airport,

an American tourist has been stopped
for the possession of cannabis.

You're being arrested for
importation of a controlled drug.

It's now down to
Officer Geordie to determine

the seriousness of the offence.

I'll tell you that you're not
obliged to say anything,

but anything you do say will be
taken down in writing

and may be given in evidence.

Bermuda has decriminalised
possession of marijuana

up to 7g, but the moment
you smoke it,

it still becomes an offence under
the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The importation of any controlled
drug is illegal.

So, even if it was less than 7g of
cannabis,

it's still a specific offence,
and that's why

we end up dealing with a lot of
things with customs at the airport.

So, what's going to happen now,
the drugs are going to be

seized as evidence, you will be
taken to a police station

and then you will be processed in
the police station, and the reason

we're doing that is because of the
quantity of drug that you have.

If it was less than 7g,
then

we may be in a position to deal with
it by way of an informal warning.

OK. I'm, like...I...

..I will say, like, I thought
it was 7g.

I'm going to go and get a set of
scales

and Ill weigh it myself to get
a better indication.

So, you're saying you think it's
only 7g?

If Officer Geordie discovers the
tourist was carrying more than seven

grams of cannabis, the man could be
facing a criminal conviction.

We do get the innocent mistakes,

but I think a lot of these innocent
mistakes are just sheer stupidity.

I think a lot of people,
when they travel on vacation,

leave their brains at home.

Unfortunately, it's 8g,

so it's actually just over our
threshold.

So, I'm not going to place
you in handcuffs.

I'm empathetic

because I understand they've
done something dumb,

and I'll deal with them
with a little bit of dignity

and a little bit of respect they
deserve when I'm dealing with them.

In this spirit,
Officer Geordie contacts

the Director of Public Prosecutions
to see if the matter can be

dealt with as a formal caution,
given the marginal amounts.

Bear in mind that that decision is

out of my hands and it's
always going to be the prosecutor's.

It's difficult in the fact

that somebody's got to get locked
up, taken to the station,

when he's barely above the threshold
of giving him an informal warning,

but I've got my job to do and at
the end of the day

there's lines in the sand.

It turned out that Officer Geordie's
intervention did the trick.

It's not in the public interest to
take somebody to court for

1g above the threshold...

..so at the station he was given a
formal warning

and he was released from custody.

Officer Holly is halfway through her
first proper shift as a police

constable, with mentor officer Moya.

Oh, hell, no.

On the road, right in front of them,

someone has ridden a bike
irresponsibly.

So, basically, the person just
disobeyed the stop sign,

so we're going to speak to him
about that.

Good afternoon, sir.
Can I have your licence?

Do you know you, er, didn't
stop at the stop sign back there?

Not even...not even conscious of
it. OK.

Erm, so I'm going to just
take your licence

and I'm just going to check it,
OK?

I'm going to have to give you a
ticket, OK?

You don't HAVE to give me a ticket.

All right, sir. Well...

I'm, like, Sunday driving. This is
not the fastest bike in Bermuda.

This is one of the slowest bikes I'm
on here

and when you pulled me
over, I said, "Me?!"

With the rider's charm
offensive in full swing,

Holly now has a difficult decision.

to do a ticket or a man form?

This is your discretion.

You saw the offence?

Yeah. OK.

And then what you do when you see
an offence, it's totally on you.

You also need to call in the stop.

I'm doing a traffic stop on

Erm, disobeying a stop sign.

I'm going to give you a warning

Officer Holly chose not to ticket.

This gentleman was very nice,
he's had a good attitude,

he admitted to the offence,
he knew exactly what he was doing,

so I made the decision to give him
a warning this time.

At some point she's going to learn
that you can't always be nice.

Erm, this job has no mercy,

it has no thanks whatsoever but...

..er, she will learn to, you know,
balance the niceness.

It's something Holly has
heard before.

All the way through my training
a lot of, erm,

people were saying that I was too
nice. I say sorry a lot, erm,

because that's what we do in
nursing, like, we empathise,

we apologise and actual fact that
doesn't always work in policing

for obvious reasons, and, erm,
I can't be arresting someone

and saying sorry.

Suddenly, an urgent call for help
comes in from another

pair of officers.

Holly's tough side may now
be needed.

Er, we've had a call...
We need backup.

Call for service? ..for service.

So, basically, its almost like a
distress call.

Another unit has asked for us
to backup,

so we're just going there now.

We don't know the situation yet.

SIREN BLARES

When one of those comes in your
heart starts going.

To be honest you start
fearing the worst.

Seven-ten.

We're not quite sure exactly what's
happening at the location,

so once they call for assistance
we really need to get

there as soon as possible.

You just have to be prepared to deal
with whatever it is

you see on scene.

Make a call, 68.

Yep, hotel seven is on
the scene.

Hotel seven to Oscar ten-68.

A suspect has become violent,
but armed response officers have

arrived on the scene to
calm down the situation.

MAN SHOUTS

The officers called for assistance,
erm, but by the time we got

there they had gotten enough
assistance from other units.

The safety of training school
feels like a long,

long time ago now and, yeah,
it's...and, and I...and PC Milwood

makes me feel like I am needed,
so that, kind of...

..I mean, that's scary, but it
makes me feel like I can help.
