And it's really humid today.

The reality is there are challenges.

Crime-busting in a place
where anything can happen.

I didn't really expect
the cows to run out the gate. Uh-oh.

Today in Bermuda,

officers patrol
the prison perimeter.

If there's been an event
inside the prison

and they're trying to get rid
of a knife,

they'll chuck it over the wall.

A suspected squatter wreaks havoc.

They smashed a toilet and the tub.

And tempers flare at the station.

Calm down. Calm down.

Officer Gregory White
is patrolling the streets

of the island's capital, Hamilton.

Hotel-2 requesting a 37-38, please.

Yeah, I much prefer patrols.

Last week I had to do
the station sergeant duties

and I did all right with it,
it's growing on me,

but I prefer to be out
and getting stuck into the action.

The best thing
about being on patrol in Bermuda

is you never know
what you're going to come across.

So I'm going to stop this bike now
that just ran through the red light.

Going to pull... Chase.

We got chase.

There it goes.

Officer Gregory's chasing
what he suspects is a stolen bike.

I'm going to lose it.

The unpredictability
and the excitement of the job,

it's definitely a part of
my make-up, part of my DNA, I guess.

I think I lost him.

Oh, he went the other way. Ah.

It's frustrating but,
er, it happens.

Being in a car,
you can't always keep up with them.

It's annoying
but it comes with the territory.

Car ownership is limited
to one vehicle per household,

so motorcycle theft is rife,

with millions of dollars' worth
of bikes stolen every year.

The criminals are known to use
a lot of the back roads

to try and evade...
avoid the police contact.

It's a cat-and-mouse game with them.

Officers are always on the lookout

for bikes that have fallen
into the wrong hands.

Hotel-2, Oscar 10-5. 37, please.

I'm just running the plate, trying
to make sure it's not a stolen bike.

And any hint of suspicious activity
is a red flag.

Er, so the bike that I saw,
his helmet was undone,

right there, er, just going to turn
around and stop him,

and he's made a quick turn
off on a cut road here

and is, er...
Appears to be trying to evade me.

Is he going up? Yes, he is.
Son of a gun.

I'm not going to even be able
to get up that road

because he's going to go up
and go right through there.

They're a lot more nimble
on the bikes

to be able to get through
the cut-through.

Officer Gregory's racing to cut off
the motorcyclist's short cut.

You need to be switched on
out in the street.

You're always going to be
one step behind them

because they're going to know
what they're going to do before you,

so you have to be able to react...

I might be able to get around
fast enough.

..but you still have to be aware
of your surroundings

and take a bit of a risk.

So, you've got to be really
trained well

and you have to use that training
in order to get the job done.

See if he's come back out this way.

That's not him.

He may even try
and make his way back out that way,

if he's gotten through here already.
By the time I got through,

he may have gotten out
and continued on his way.

The motorbike rider made it through
the cut before Officer Gregory.

Here's the area where the bike
will have come out of.

They know, even the big police
bikes, they can't get through there

but the small little scooters
can get through there and get away,

so just part of the
cat-and-mouse game that we play.

They have to be lucky all the time,
I've got to be lucky just once.

On the eastern side of the island,

Officer Lisa Tucker
and her colleagues,

officers Derek Simmons
and Vinay Suvarna, are on patrol.

Today has been kind of,
er, an uneventful day but, er,

when things do happen down the east,
they happen.

When Lisa joined the force
12 years ago,

she was fulfilling a lifelong dream.

So, way, way back in the '80s,

they actually used to recruit you
right out of high school.

I'm getting me an ice cream, it's
hot? Yeah. The heat is on, innit?

The cadets came into the classroom
and I have a thing about uniforms

and they just looked so smart,
their hats on,

the uniform looking all nice
and I'm like,

"That's what I want to do."

I enjoy being on patrol

because I can work
with anybody on this service.

I cannot even think not one person
I don't get along with.

..they get an urgent call
of a bike theft.

All right, thanks. Appreciate it.

Three E-bikes, each worth thousands
of dollars, have been stolen.

Bike thefts, it's a very big issue,
but not too many pedal cycles

and this is the first that I've
heard of, of these electric bikes

being taken.
It's mostly the motorcycles.

Like, most times someone
would just take one.

Like, to get... Just to use
for transportation at night

to get from one destination
to another,

to get usually from wherever
they are to get to home,

but the whole three of them to be
stolen, this seems to be targeted.

Let's go find out.

The bikes belong to a rental company
run by a local couple.

Good afternoon.

Lisa needs to gather details
of the theft at the scene

where the bikes were stolen.

Do you know where the bikes
were stored or where they were being
charged? From my understanding,

they were being charged overnight,
correct? They were supposed to be,

yes, but the bikes would've been
located right where...

Oh. Yeah. They were supposed to be
kept in a locked garage...

That's where they were supposed to
be, is in that garage right there.

So they were supposed to be here in,
in the garage? Yes.

It's not even just necessarily on
the street, it's not just in town,

you can't even say any particular
area, any particular neighbourhood.

They are not discriminating. It
could be right out of your back
yard,

you know, so it's a serious problem.

We have to do some further
investigation.

Hopefully, we can find out who
the person really is that took it.

Let's hope that this doesn't happen
to you again. Yeah, for sure.

The stress of these situations
takes away from productivity,

so the sooner that these things
kind of get wrapped up,

the sooner we can get back to...

The theft of the electric vehicles
is impacting business

and the owners are desperate
to get them back.

We always find that members
of the public are always upset

with police for one reason or
another. Either we are not acting

fast enough, we take too long,

they want everything to be
like instant coffee.

You know I have to tell them
it's not Burger King,

you can't have it your way.
There is a process to everything.

Officer Lisa knows
she'll need a stroke of luck

to return the E-bikes
to their owners.

Bermuda is a picture-perfect
paradise,

made up of 181 islands,
islets and rocks.

The coast guard and police service
work together

to keep the water safe.

Ski 1, if you just want to do
a perimeter sweep, we'll follow you.

Corporal Melanie Gauntlett
and police officer Sean Wheatley

are on duty today and they have
their eyes trained on the shoreline.

So this boat is Bermuda's
newest shipwreck.

We are the shipwreck capital
of the world.

Er, it cut its moorings
in a hurricane

and has been rocked up here
for about three years.

We have to come out and patrol
and make sure

nobody is getting on the vessel
to strip it of any goods

that may still be there
that the owner hasn't taken off,

and make sure that there aren't
any oil spills or fuel leaks

that we have to control
environmentally.

This is just a part-time thing
for me,

I have a civilian job
on the outside.

I am a financial pensions adviser.

In my civilian job,
it's a bit more relaxed.

Less adrenaline.

4-1-Alpha, 4-1-Juliet,
be advised that the tournament boats

are on their way back in
around Commissioner's Point.

Here we have Bermuda's prison,
Westgate.

It is their all-male facility.

They can't see past those walls.

My house has a much better view,

more incentive
to stay out of prison.

The prison's high walls
keep the around-100 prisoners in,

but that doesn't always stop
illegal packages coming in and out.

We work in tandem on the water. So,
we do a perimeter sweep every shift

to make sure that there have been
no contraband packages

that have been thrown over
to drift onto the rocks

to make it into the prison,

and nothing has been thrown
out of the prison by the inmates.

Regular checks make the jail
more secure

and keep the coastline around it
safe.

Drugs actually wash up on shore
quite often.

Occasionally, if there's been
an event inside the prison

and they're trying to get rid
of a knife or a weapon

that they shouldn't have had,
they'll chuck it over the wall.

I have two daughters,
they are 12 and 8.

I'm proud to say that they love
the fact that I serve here.

They call this my supersuit.

Bermuda is stunning,

but as Police Commissioner
Darrin Simons knows,

there's more to this place
than sun-soaked beauty.

Without a doubt,
Bermuda is paradise.

Call me biased,
but it is a paradise.

Looking at the beautiful vista,
you could be confused to think

that there aren't such things like,
you know, poverty, homelessness.

As, erm, a police officer, you know,

we get to see some of the other
sides of our community, our society.

Officer Gregory White
is in Hamilton,

treating his team to an ice tea.

It's another hot day here
in the summer and, er, it helps,

helps cool everybody down.

And what are you having, baby?

Hmm, mango, please.

Just mango? Yes.

You can get mango and pina colada.
OK, bring it on, then.

Both of them, perfect.

It was a taste of the darker side
of life on the island

that attracted him to the job
almost 20 years ago.

I was out with some friends
one night

and I saw a guy get assaulted
by three or four other males.

Without even thinking about it,
I kind of just, like,

jumped into action and tried
to follow them as they escaped.

That was kind of like
the life-changing moment.

I was like, you know what,
I really need to do something

to help better my community.

Without you guys,
my job would be a lot harder.

Officer Gregory's on his way
to a property

owned by an elderly gentleman
that has been occupied illegally.

I attended a job earlier
this morning

for a report of somebody
trespassing,

squatting on the property.

I'm just going back to do some
follow-up inquiries with the owner

to see if they can identify
the person that was living there.

The first thing
is to check in on the owner.

Hello? Hello. Yeah, it's
Officer White from this morning.

So, the gentleman was,
er, close to 80 years old

and you could see that he was
quite shaken up by it and stuff.

In his golden years,
he deserves the police assistance

to make sure that he feels safe
in his home.

The squatter's living in a house
adjacent to the elderly man's home.

This is the entrance
into the property

where the person
was illegally staying.

As you can see, it's, erm,
very small.

The homeowner had asked this person
to leave, but before they did,

they smashed a toilet
and the corner of the tub.

The squatter damaged the property
when asked to leave.

Yeah, I just wanted to come back
and show you a picture

to see if you could identify
who this person may be.

Right, so does that look like him?

No, not really. No?

They should know what he looks like,
they let him off for murder.

Yeah, he just got out of jail.
They let him off for murder.

They know what he looks like.

There's few people that have
beat murder charges recently,

so I'm not sure. They are one
of the trio who got off.

The squatter may be known to police,

but Officer Gregory
can only pursue the case

if the victim
wants to press charges.

When can you come to Hamilton
Station to give me a statement?

About an hour or so.

So, you're looking at, what,
like, four o'clock?

Yeah. About four o'clock,
come to Hamilton Station.

With the squatter still at large,

the pressure's on Officer Gregory
to identify him fast.

And we think that he may be known to
the police through other contacts.

It's important that
we track him down

and bring him in for questioning.

In the east of the island,

it's a new shift for officers
Lisa Tucker and Derek Simmons,

and they get an urgent call.

There has been a report,
a sighting

of one of the electric cycles
that were stolen.

It's being ridden by a male.

10-4. Is there any description
of clothing he's wearing?

The only description was that
he has grey, curly hair.

It's a stroke of luck
for Officer Lisa,

as one of the stolen E-bikes on her
wanted list has been located nearby.

It means a speedy drive
to head off the suspected thief.

I'm not going to lie,
I love to drive fast.

I like the adrenaline.

I don't even have to be
the one driving, going fast.

If my partner is a response driver
and we're going fast, I love it.

This is the bike right here? Yeah.
You're going to stay there? Yeah.

What has he got on?

At the scene, tensions are high.

Sir, you put your hands like this
for me, please.

With the owners of the bike spotting
and detaining the suspect...

One sec, one sec. ..it's up
to Officer Lisa to restore order.

Derek, you got your handcuff key?
Let me just secure this.

This bike has been sprayed
to conceal the fender.

My approach is, I always believe
it's easier to catch flies

with honey than vinegar. I always
go in to be polite to everyone,

you know, I try to go in there
with my best foot forward

and be respectful because I think
that even if someone is up here

and they're angry and stuff,

if you go in with a different
type of energy,

different type of persona then,
you know, they have to change.

Sir, right now you are going to be
arrested for suspicion of theft

of removing bikes
that don't belong to you, OK?

So, I have to find out if the person
that was on the bike riding it,

if he had bought it,
purchased it from the person

that he stole it from, or if he's
the one that actually stole it,

and they will take him to the
station and we'll do a interview.

Officer Lisa's attention
now turns to the E-bike.

It looks like the original colour
was black,

so he's spraypainted it

to conceal its true identity,
it looks like, yeah.

The respray means
the bike's unlikely to have

any trace of the thief,

so Lisa's not sure if it needs to be
seized as evidence.

I'm going to make a call, one sec.

She checks in with her boss.

Hey, Sergeant Butcher?
Question for you,

we've got someone in possession for,
erm, theft of an electronic cycle,

it's been spraypainted a different
colour to conceal its identity

but the question is, do we still
seize the bike for evidence?

Just take pictures of it?
All right.

Photos of the bike
can be used as evidence.

So, I need to get the serial number.

I think we've got everything,
so, yes, you can take it.

One E-bike is back with its rightful
owners, but two remain missing.

The best chance of recovery
lies with the arrested man.

So, what we'll do now,
we'll go to Hamilton Police Station,

get him processed and possibly...
maybe do an interview.

But will he be willing to talk?

We'll get to the bottom of this, OK?

Back out on the water,
Corporal Melanie Gauntlett

and officer Sean Wheatley
are continuing their patrol.

Reaching speeds of up to 60mph,

jet skis like Officer Sean's give
them the agility to react quickly.

I really enjoy the jet ski work.

It's not just fun,
but it makes it accessible,

I can get to places, I can interact
with people a lot easier.

Bermuda's subtropical climate
and gentle trade winds

make it a popular spot for sailing,

but all vessels
must stick to strict safety rules.

We're going to approach the boat,
just do a quick safety inspection,

make sure they've got
what they need.

Theoretically, because we are
offshore where we are here,

have life vests, smoke,
dye, rockets, VHF,

all of the safety equipment
that you should carry offshore.

Just make sure everybody's got what
they need to be having a good day

on the water.

And checking that this boat's
got the safety equipment it needs

is the kind of job Officer Sean
and his jet ski are made for.

Just doing safety checks.

Have you guys got enough
life jackets for everybody?

All right, can we just see them?
Oh, they're there are.

all your flares and everything...

Yeah. ..as well? Sorry to be
a nuisance but safety is, er...

..is a big thing.

So far so good, all the
safety equipment's shipshape.

I've seen them use it.

The radio's not working.

Without it, the boat could be left
with no way to communicate

in case of an emergency.

That's one important thing,
definitely.

Especially once you're, er,
offshore here.

I know you're not very far offshore
but it is required.

Who is responsible for the boat
today? Who is the captain?

You? You're the lucky person?
Yes.

All right, it is
a ticketable offence, unfortunately.

We do have a zero tolerance
on any safety offences, so...

The broken radio means a ticket.

It's just for failing
to carry safety equipment,

the VHF not working right now.

It's $150, er, payable,
er, within seven days.

thinks the fuse must have blown

because it was working.

rules are rules, even in paradise.

Safety is very important and that is
one thing that we are, er,

strict on there because you never
know when you're going to need

that safety equipment if your boat's
starting to sink. So if people don't
know if their radio's working,

you're not able to, er,
call for help.

Especially if your cellphone gets
wet. And if you just explain to them

what you're doing and the reason
you're doing it, and generally,

you know, they know
it's for a good reason.

..is racing to identify the squatter
in the property

of the elderly man
he visited earlier.

I got a name of somebody,
that was part of a trio

that just got off some murder
charges. Ring any bell to you?

Cos obviously that would have
been your guys' department.

See if it stood out.

Er, so I just contacted
one of my colleagues

who works in the investigation
department, erm, who would've

dealt with the possible murder, but
it doesn't ring any bells with him.

With the victim due
to make a statement in an hour,

it's vital to establish if the
suspect is already known to police.

So, we're just trying to see
if we can go

down some other avenues
as to who this person may be,

and I did identify a possible,
erm, suspect's last name,

but I can't do anything further
until I get a statement.

The victim should have been
at the station half an hour ago,

but he hasn't appeared.
With the island being so small,

you can run into challenges

because people will not want
to come forward with information

sometimes because of who they know
or because it's so easy

to be found out, so you have people
that are afraid of reprisals.

Concerned for the man's welfare,

Officer Gregory decides
to return to the property.

didn't show up at four o'clock,

go check to make sure he's OK.

When it comes to the elderly
who have been wronged,

you definitely feel more of a sense
of urgency to want to do something

to help them feel like
they've got some justice

and chivalry isn't dead yet.

..when the homeowner
finally appears,

he has forgotten about the meeting.

Hi. What happened? I was supposed to
come give you a statement, wasn't I?

Yeah. Reassured he's safe,

checks the property again.

It looks like he has gone.

Do you want him prosecuted
or do you want him just to be gone

and not to return to the property?

Whether you prosecute him or not,
as long as he doesn't come here,

that would be good enough for me.

Sometimes that's all it takes
is just the police presence

in order to achieve the goal
of having somebody just leave

the residence
and find somewhere else.

The victim was happy that the person
had appeared to have taken

all their property,
so if they were happy,

then I'm happy that they were able
to achieve their goal.

Because he's changed his mind,

my investigations

On the east of the island,

and we're hoping that tomorrow

with him.
