I didn't really expect the cows

mixed with water, it's a recipe for
a lot of problems.

a critical bike crash.

The only thing on my mind is,
I have to save this person.

Bermuda's main public holiday
is in August...

Woo!

..and at the heart of it is a huge
game of cricket

played over two days.

Cup Match is actually my
favourite holiday on the island.

It's a two-day holiday,
four-day weekend.

But got to be the hottest days
of the whole year.

It's like 100 degrees in the shade.
There's no way of getting from it.

The party scene around it,
it's more like being at

Glastonbury around Lord's.
Maybe that'd be the closest thing.

There's no bigger party all year,
with the whole island invited,

making it peak time to patrol
for the police.

You're not arresting anybody
for drinking in a public place,

which ordinarily you would do,
so there's some allowances.

We know we are going to be working
very hard for about five full days.

It can be sometimes a lot of work.

People are going to be intoxicated,

so it's about having your emotional
intelligence in check

that day to keep the peace.

How are you?

It's day two of the Cup Match
holiday, and at the ground,

there are thousands of spectators
in high spirits.

Making sure that everyone is
behaving themselves

are officers Crystal Correia
and Litanya Smith.

Good morning!

Oh! What's this? A monster truck!

SHE IMITATES TRUCK ENGINE

Everyone comes out.
It's the east and the west meet.

So the west is Somerset
and the east is St George's

and they meet for cricket,

and then they battle it out
for two days.

With Somerset from the west carrying
a big lead into day two,

for officers Crystal and Litanya,
just keeping a lid

on their own rivalry may
be the biggest challenge.

I'm such a dedicated supporter,
I wear blue and blue every day.

Somerset is, of course,
red and blue.

I support Somerset cos we're
the best. I support St George's,

because she's been brainwashed and
it's been drilled in her as a child,

so she didn't get to choose
for herself.

The west is the best!
So it's St George's.

Oh, he's dropped!
Oh, he's dropped!

Really? Really?!

Beautiful.

You want a napkin for your tears?

Don't touch me.

Motorbikes are the main way
of getting around in Bermuda.

But with daily crashes on its roads,
and most of them involving bikes,

preventing speeding and dangerous
driving has become

a priority for the police.

Unfortunately, it's become sort of
Bermuda's culture, bike accidents.

They're just so frequent, it's so
common, and it's every day.

I mean, whether it's minor or major,
it's at least one a day.

And for a small island,
in comparison to the UK,

I mean, it's a lot.

A particular focus for officers Chin
and Imani Scott is tourists

who've just stepped off cruise ships
to hire bikes

with no experience whatsoever of
Bermuda's challenging roads.

Road traffic accidents involving
tourists during the summer months

are very frequent. Every day.
Every single day.

Bermuda's roads are not easy
to navigate

because they're narrow,
because they're small.

They see these views while they're
riding. They get excited.

They start filming. The person
on the back

starts getting excited and wiggling,

and then when you look, that's it,
it's done.

A Bermuda tattoo is
an abrasion sustained

by colliding with Bermuda's asphalt.

That's the best way I can
describe it.

Tourists have them all the time.

Today, officers Daischon and Imani
are positioned

just outside Dockyard,
Bermuda's cruise ship terminal.

We have... Essentially, I believe
it's two cruises a day at the cruise

port, but what it is, is that
the motorcycle rental companies

are based in Dockyard,
so we have the tourists

actually leaving from Dockyard.

Three, eight.
Three, eight.

Suddenly they get a call of a bike
crash nearby

and that one of the riders
is unconscious.

The only thing on my mind is,
I have to save this person.

I may not save this person,
but I'm going to do everything

I need to do in order
to save this person.

I need to be able to walk away
and say I did everything I could.

Officer Imani has been partners
with Officer Daischon for one year.

Daischon cares for life.

He has been in some situations

where he has had to do life-saving
measures on people.

He just jumps right in.

Hello. Oh, no.
All right, what has taken place?

Being CPR trained,
they're first responders.

Can you hear me?

Whisky Two to Oscar Ten Five.

The fate of the injured female rider
is in their hands

until the ambulance arrives.

All right, so help is going
to be on the way.

They should be any minute now, OK?

A huge part of the Cup Match holiday
is the celebrations on the water.

Woo!

And there is none bigger
than the boat party at Mangrove Bay.

Captain Pattison of the coastguard
is in charge of making sure

that every reveller remains
out of harm's way.

Morning, everybody.
Last day of Cup Match.

Our main role is to go out and do
safety for this event

in Mangrove Bay right here.
People who haven't done it,

we're looking anywhere from 750
to 1,000 vessels in this bay.

Then you sit there and say, people
and power drinking on top of that.

OK? So hence the name
of the game for today is safety.

Boat culture in Bermuda
is for owners

to tie their vessels to one another.

We have an area that everyone
goes to.

They raft up, large party,

with people in the water swimming
all day.

Brit officer Hugo Benzinger
is one of the 20-strong team

who will be on the water, keeping an
eye out for every possible danger.

You can have maybe 4,000,
5,000 people, and that's full-on.

It is the biggest day on the water.

Alcohol will be an issue. I'd expect
many people to be drinking.

It is going to be a very busy day.

Given the dangers, it's vital
that every boat here

has the correct safety equipment,

which means one life jacket
for every passenger.

Hey, guys! Slow down.

Thank you.

With so many in the water,
Officer Hugo must also keep on top

of speeding in the bay.
The speed limit is five knots.

now to check out the raft-up party

that's going on. It's just up

that things could

take a turn for the worse.

patrol in the heat.

Officer Woody's worked in Bermuda
for seven years,

but there are things he still misses
about the UK.

The roads here are very small.
The speed limit is very low.

You can't have any kind
of, like, fast cars.

They're not allowed on the island.
So I miss having, like, a nice car

back home and open driving on
motorways and things like that.

You wouldn't think you'd miss it,
but actually I do.

Today, he's helping to keep
the narrow and winding roads

of Bermuda free of danger.

They do have quite a significant
amount of accidents

and serious accidents as well
for the size of the island,

so it is a high priority
for the service.

Officer Woody has spotted
a motorbiker ahead of them

riding straight through a junction.

It's not a give way, it is a
stop sign, so you should really

still come to a full stop, and then
carry on with your way, OK? Yeah.

Have you got your driving licence
with you so we can just check that?

Yes. Thanks, mate.

Can you just do me a 36 check?

I'm satisfied that you've accepted
my advice and that the driving,

riding behaviour observed was a
momentary lapse in good judgment.

Being a minor offence,

Officer Woody's decided to only give
the man a warning...

We're just going to double check
quickly that you've not got

a warrant. You're not aware of any
warrants outstanding

or anything like that?
No, there's not.

As soon as they've confirmed that,
I'll let you get on your way.

..and awaits final
radio confirmation

that there are no outstanding
warrants for the man.

INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER

What's that for?

Just while we had him, I just did
a courtesy check to make sure

he didn't have any outstanding
warrants, and it turned out

that he did have one from several
years ago,

just for going a little too fast
near the coastline

and creating a bit too much wake.

Who issued the warning? Was it...

He said he'd had a conversation
with the coastguard and that they...

He was under the understanding that
they'd just given him a warning

about it, but they must have issued
him with a ticket.

The rider denies he had ever
received a ticket for the incident.

Now there's somewhere
that he urgently wants to be.

You've got to go to a meeting?
Just bear with me one second,

I'll try and sort it. One second.

With a warrant outstanding
for the man's arrest,

Officer Woody must either
put him in cuffs

or decide to use his discretion.

I've spoken to the incident room
inspector. Yeah.

Obviously, they didn't issue
a warning.

They must have issued you
with a ticket.

He's taken into account your honesty

and that you've got this important
meeting with work, and as long as

you surrender yourself first thing
in the morning...

Just go to Hamilton Police Station.

They've OKed it for him to just
present himself in the morning,

rather than us arresting him and
taking him straight down

to the station. I'm confident he
will hand himself in in the morning.

You know, we could have had
to arrest you now

and take you in for it, which we
don't want to do.

Officer Woody has given the rider
the benefit of the doubt

with his mind on the bigger picture.

We need the public on side
at the end of the day,

so we need people to be supportive
of us as well.

So when we can be reasonable
and use some discretion

in circumstances like that,
we will try and do it.

But what we will do is we'll do a
follow-up to make sure that that has

happened and, if not, then we'll be
paying him a visit.

Hello. Oh, no.
Right, what has taken place?

With an ambulance still on the way,
Officers Daischon and Imani are

first responders to a motorbike
accident involving tourists,

one of which is unconscious.

Can you hear me?

The only thing on my mind is,
I have to save this person.

What's your name, hon?

I need to be able to walk away
and say I did everything

I could in that moment, no matter
what the outcome is,

to ensure that this person
had a fair chance.

Miss, does anything hurt you?

When I discovered the rider is
conscious, it's a big relief.

Just for your information,

she is conscious and talking
with us.

You never wish to be
at the accidents that end

in someone losing their life.

So this one?
No, this leg is sore.

I was like, "Phew!"
It allows you to just breathe.

We have an ambulance on the way
for you, OK?

But both riders
still have significant injuries.

We have one injured female
and one injured male.

The injured female is complaining of
pain to the right side of her body.

It looks like that's where
she may have landed.

And then we have a male with a
potentially broken

or dislocated, um...

..left wrist.

The officers' immediate attention
is on the injured female,

with apparently the more serious
injuries of the two.

All right. If you can just lay back
for us,

help's going to be on the way.
They should be any minute now.

So, do you remember exactly
how this happened?

Your back's hurting as well?

But quickly, the officer develops
significant concerns

about the injured male.

First, it looked like she had
the worse injuries

because she did become unconscious.

However, on our arrival, she was
able to regain consciousness.

But once the adrenaline came down,

the male is now
experiencing chest pains

and it's hurting him
to actually breathe,

on top of him having
a dislocated wrist.

Thankfully, the ambulance arrives
to take charge of the man's care,

with Daischon sharing his concerns.

He's now complaining of chest pains
because earlier, he was saying

that he doesn't feel nothing
except his wrist.

Right, right, right.

So now he has chest pains.

OK.

The paramedics believe that neither
rider has life-changing injuries.

As a couple, they're going to go
to the hospital.

The girl looks a bit banged up,

but I believe she's going
to be perfectly fine.

Good fortune has certainly
been on their side.

They had to have come through there

and nicked the side
of the pole over here.

And they went straight on
and hit that tree directly.

I actually think they were
very lucky

because, one, it was a large tree
that they crashed into,

and, two, when people are involved
in collisions

that have wooden railings
in the vicinity - don't end well.

I just find it crazy that they were
able to squeeze through

this little gap there.
Yeah. That's a tiny gap.

I mean, like I said, it was probably
lucky because had they hit

this fence, it probably would have
been a lot worse. Yeah.

It's been a busy shift.

I like to help people.
I like to be the first responder,

first one, you know, so that we make
the Ambulance

and Fire and Rescue Service's
jobs easier.

I love police work.
That's right. Me too.

Sadly, Officer Imani knows
that tomorrow may well bring

another accident of inexperienced
tourists on bikes.

You expect it. I expect to go to
work and we'll probably have

at least one collision today,

and that one collision is likely to
involve a bike.

I mean, it's just going
to be more and more common.

Boy!

CHEERING

Corporal Nathan Frick is eight hours
into his shift on the water,

keeping revellers safe
at the boat party.

It feels like the day is coming
to the end, slowly.

It's been a long day.

Much alcohol has been consumed,
with some of the usual consequences.

For some of them, they're having a
fun effect. For others, um...

Well, we've seen a couple that
have, um...

..chummed up the waters, shall we
say? Definitely thrown up.

So, yeah, we're definitely
getting that.

Corporal Nathan remains ever alert.

People have had alcohol
in their systems,

and now they're driving
their boats again.

And they've had a lot of heat,
they're a little bit dehydrated,

so not exactly thinking clearly.

So this is where we could have

things such as boats colliding
into each other.

There's another boat out there! Huh?

There's another boat right
there behind you!

Boaters running over swimmers.

We've had people calling out,
asking for help

finding their people that are
swimming, that they're leaving,

so we could have swimmers that are
left behind.

Also, when you have the alcohol
and the heat,

sometimes tempers will flare up,
so we could get that.

But they only showed you one!

Cos there was only one guy
and his kids. Hey, hey!

One life jacket per person.
Last chance.

So we're just... This is the time
where we're kind of

a little more heightened senses
right now.

There has been no major incident
so far,

but Corporal Nathan knows
the unspoken rules.

Using the Q word is against

all Bermudan
law enforcement superstition.

Oh, let's not say the Q word now.

Now is not the time for that.

If you say the word Q-U-I-E-T
while on shift, it's, um...

You've basically cursed us
to have a night

of nothing but trouble.

If someone calls it,
they absolutely jinx it.

It's a jinx.

Pretty quiet, actually!

No, kidding!
What did you just say?!

You seriously said it?

After the pressure of dealing
with the bike crash,

officers Daischon and Imani are back
on the road.

Unfortunately, bike accidents become
sort of Bermuda's culture.

They're just so frequent.

For a small island, in comparison
to the UK, I mean, it's a lot.

No-one knows this more than Officer
Mark Lewis, who's in charge

of the Bermuda Police Service
bike pound,

where damaged bikes involved
in crashes are stored.

These keys here, most of them are
for bikes

that have been involved
in accidents.

I would say
there's probably 100 maybe.

A lot of these
are serious collisions.

There are some bikes on here
that were involved in fatalities.

But a lot of it is speed
and overestimating their ability,

if you ask me personally. I think
a lot of people think

they can ride better
than what they do.

The pound covers a significant area.

Yet with so many crashed bikes,
they're running out of room.

At the impound, we have vehicles -
if there is an investigation

or an alleged offence
that's been committed,

we'll bring it here and we'll have
our traffic collision investigators

check the bikes.

I'll show you a couple over here,

what a lot of the bikes look
like after a collision.

This bike was involved in
a head-on collision.

Car pulled out in front of it.

He was seriously injured.
I believe he broke his pelvis.

This was a head-on collision.
It's another guy.

I believe he's got serious facial
issues, broken jaw, etc.

There's another one here.
This is broken legs.

A lot of times, some of
these collisions,

you know, they're life-altering.

Um, loss of limbs.

I mean, broken bones.

Bike crashes are so common
in Bermuda,

there are very few people on
the island who have been untouched

by their consequences.

I have lost a couple of people
that I know.

Not just through the job,
but personally.

A friend of mine died
when he was younger

from a road traffic collision,
single vehicle.

I've got family members that
have had injuries from collisions.

For Officer Mark,
there's a simple fix.

Slow down a little bit,
think about what you're doing,

drive defensively and always
think that you don't know

what that other person's going to do
coming towards you.

My hope is that we can get a
decrease in road traffic collisions,

people slow down, pay a little bit
more attention,

and my yard won't look
like a scrapyard.

Back at the cricket ground, the
two-day Cup Match is drawing

to a close, with Somerset heading
for a big win over St George's.

that the final is safe for everyone.

of a disagreement

between two men
in one of the stands...

I don't know exactly
what happened.

THEY TALK OVER EACH OTHER

The police remove one of the men
who alleges that he was punched.

He's unhappy about the arrest.

With no sign of him calming down,

he'll be taken to custody
at Hamilton Police Station.

The Somerset victory is confirmed

the island celebrates,

who's ended his shift at Cup Match.

It's been a good day

but, you know, because we were
working during the day,

I'm going to make sure I get my
party on tonight.

to have a great day off.
