It's tough,
and it's really humid today.

The reality is there are challenges.

Crime-busting in a place where
anything can happen.

I didn't really expect the cows
to run out the gate.

Going to great lengths
to catch criminals.

police.

Coming up in Bermuda,

the island goes cricket
crazy for its national holiday...

It's a joyful time in Bermuda.

Everybody's celebrating,

everybody's happy,
everybody's partying.

..there's an illegal
substance at the airport...

This is suspected of not
just for personal use

but also for intent to supply.

..and there is brawling
on the beaches.

Oh, fighting.

I'm thinking, "This could turn out
really quite badly."

Every August each year is
Cup Match...

..a public holiday centred around

a huge game of cricket,
Bermuda's national sport.

It's the biggest
and wildest event in the calendar.

Ooh, Cup Match!

It is like Bermuda's Super Bowl.

Two teams - Somerset and St George's
- come together

and they have a cricket match over
two days.

Thousands of locals come out.

It's a joyful time in Bermuda,
everybody's celebrating,

everybody's happy,
everybody's partying.

You see campsites all over
the island, all on the beaches,

all in the parks, everywhere.

People are out on their boats.

You can forget, honestly, that there
is an actual cricket event going on.

It is...a lot.

It's amazing. Love it.

We're going to win this year,
I promise you.

Go home, sleep, and do it again
tomorrow.

With the island off work
and officially in party mode,

it's all hands on deck
for the police.

Cup Match is probably our busiest
time of the year.

Police coming through.
Excuse us, please.

It's tough. Like, it is hot.

You have people travelling with
bladed articles,

you may have people drinking,
and they've been drinking all day.

We prepare ourselves in advance
mentally, physically.

It can go left, as we say,
very quickly.

Right here. Right here.

So, you have to be on your toes.

With crowds building, officers
Derek Simmons and Duval Robinson

are dispatched on a beach
patrol in the east of the island.

We'll just start with Clearwater,

and then make our way
to Tabacco Bay.

We're excited to work today, um,
well, they say it's double time

on a holiday, so that...that is
the most important thing.

For some people!

Whilst filling
up before their beach tour,

they get an urgent
call to the airport.

A male flying in from the US
has been arrested at customs.

It's suspicion of importation
of a controlled drug.

It's common for those
from states in the US,

with more lenient drug laws,
to be arrested in Bermuda.

They didn't realise
the strict laws of Bermuda

and they find out by surprise.

Bringing cannabis into Bermuda
is illegal...

Ten four. Making our way now.

..and anyone caught at the airport
with more than seven grams is

automatically arrested.

During a busy party weekend,

this American has been caught with
almost 130g.

For officers Derek and Duval,
instead of beach patrol,

it's a journey to the police
station.

It's the first day of Cup Match, a
two-day contest between St George's,

from the east of the island,

and Somerset, from the west.

Officers Daischon Chin and Tulifah
Simons are two of the 150 police

out in force today.

St George's is the blue and blue
team, so blue and light blue,

and then Somerset is
the red and blue team.

It's pretty much from one end
of the island to the other.

Everyone picks a side.

I represent St George's.

Boo!

I was born in St George's,
I was raised in St George's.

And I'm a Somerset fan
as you can see -

my...my red and blue, you know?

Bermuda, are you ready?

It's 10am, time for the
first ball to be bowled,

with thousands in attendance.

In he comes.

The first ball of Cup Match, here
he comes,

right arm, over the wicket...

Drinking in public is not
permitted in Bermuda, except here

on Cup Match holiday, which might
explain the high spirits.

People have their own little
campsites

and have their own little parties.

They will hire a DJ
sometimes to come and play inside.

They're consuming a lot of alcohol.

So, officers Daischon
and Tulifah must be on their toes.

Obviously, there are thousands of
people here, um, and we don't have

thousands of police officers on,

so our challenge is just trying
to be everywhere

at one time to, kind of, disrupt any
antisocial behaviour.

Um, so that's one of our
biggest challenges.

The aim is to keep the vibe joyous
and respectful,

because the first day of Cup Match
is also Emancipation Day

to mark the end of slavery
on the island.

Cup Match is a time that
we celebrate, cos it was

when we were freed as black people.

Um, so the history of Cup Match
really runs very deep for us,

um, and that's why it's such a huge
occasion every year.

Bermuda attracts almost
one million visitors a year,

and never more so than
during the Cup Match holiday.

Bermuda's top cop is
Commissioner Darrin Simons.

Legalities, there are challenges,
there are issues that

police officers have to engage with,
have to deal with.

Fortunately, I think,
from a visitor perspective,

or people coming into our island,
they rarely see that.

Bermuda, as a jurisdiction, doesn't
have much crime

that's directed towards tourists.

It's still very safe.

Policing on the beaches is not
something that your average

UK police service is going to have
to do,

but it's one of the more difficult
jobs

that we have to deal with
in Bermuda.

I mean, I suppose there are worst
things to do, er...

Horseshoe Bay is
the location for Beach Fest...

..an annual event for those wanting
to celebrate on the sand

rather than watching sport.

Yay! Woo!

With drinking in public also being
permitted at this event

for the Cup Match holiday,
it attracts a younger crowd.

The vibe is party.

Partying really hard.

Which is why
the police are out in force.

Brit officer Holly Lavigne-Smith
graduated from training

only days ago.

She's a Beach Fest newbie.

I don't really know what to expect,
so I'm feeling OK.

Hello, how are you?
I'm fine, thank you.

But I've heard this is
one of the baptisms of fire,

so we'll see how it goes.

Officers... How are you?
..is it warm enough for you?

THEY LAUGH

She was a nurse in the UK for
ten years, before moving to Bermuda.

Bermuda has some of the clearest
beaches.

The water is literally turquoise,
crystal clear.

When I first got off the plane,
my husband and I both

looked at each other and thought,
"How did we get this lucky?"

Officer Holly and her colleague
Rajiv Bailey will need

to keep their wits about them.

We're near a big body of water
with a lot of rip currents

at the moment, so we don't
want people drunk in the water.

It's not safe, basically.

As a former nurse, caring for others
is something she's used to.

She and officer Rajiv need to make
sure that all those

drinking are aged 18 and above.

As soon as the sun comes out
in the UK, everyone is at the pub,

everyone is drinking,
having a great time,

and you're living on an
island where the sun is always out

and the beach is always accessible,

and so there's always going to be
that feel-good, party vibe.

I think there is a difference there.

What time did you guys get here?
Like, six.

In the morning? Yeah.

So you guys are all over 18? Yes.

If people have yellow wrist bands,
it means they are over

the age to drink, so they can drink.

Um, so we're just looking out

for people who don't have yellow
wristbands and who are drinking.

If you look around, you'll see
everybody's wearing

the yellow wristbands, to show that
they're over 18.

You might want to get one,
then you'll stop getting stopped.

No-one's ever called me
a party pooper...

No worries.

..but it possibly did feel
a little bit like that.

There's a girl holding a Bacardi

in a blue bottoms, red top,
no wrist band.

Why are you drinking alcohol?

Because my mum gave me two...

Where's your mother?

I struggle with that, sort of,
fight between police and nursing,

like, where is my line now?

Where...where do I have to, kind of,
step back and be like,

"OK, this is where, um, St John's
Ambulance takes over"?

Um, so that is actually something
I didn't think I would feel,

but I felt quite strongly.

Officer Holly's gentle bedside
manner is currently keeping

everything in check...

It is all about communication.

If you go in all guns blazing,

then no-one is going to respond
well to you.

..with the real work yet to come.

Some of them have been out since
six this morning, and it's now four,

so they will start to... It'll start
to hit them, if it hasn't already.

With the day's heat taking its toll,
officer Bryden Pedro

and Shandora Burrows are out
patrolling the middle of the island.

Bryden has been in the police
service for almost five years.

I, kind of, have actually always
wanted to be in the police service.

I've always wanted to be,

I guess, a helper or someone who can
give back to the community.

One of the downsides would be

Bermuda can get very hot
during summer.

You have to really make sure you
stay in shape,

so that you can run after someone
when you need to.

I still remember seeing quite
a few of my partners, you know,

or myself duck out... Mm-hm.

..halfway through a foot chase.

Yep. You kind of just barrel through
it, keep going.

I've had a... I've had a few falls.

THEY LAUGH

But today, they plan to be
a little more static.

They're doing traffic stops
on one of Bermuda's busiest roads.

So, right now we're on Harbour Road
junction with Lover's Lane.

We're going to do vehicle checks.
We actually have our sergeant

that's a little ways down, and if
he sees anything that's suspicious

or brings to our attention,

he will tell us, and when
the vehicle comes closer,

we'll pull it over, and
we'll deal with it accordingly.

The primary thing I look
for when I'm on the road

is for dangerous driving, um,

cycles that are unlicenced or
uninsured, sometimes they're not

in the right owner's name,

and you really want to target those,

because if they're involved in a
collision with someone else

or they cause injury to someone
else,

you want to make sure that
they're documented.

And it's not long before they find
the first offender.

So it was... It expired in May '22.

Yeah, I mean, you can't be
driving on the road

without licence and insurance.

Do you have any proof of insurance?

I don't. Not on me. No.

I can't provide any permission
for you to ride the bike unlicenced.

Well, I'll walk it,
if you want me to.

You can... You're allowed to walk
the cycle, but you can't ride it.

A lot of people, you know,
often come and, you know,

"why aren't you out,
out there catching murderers?"

Are you carrying any weapons on you
or anything like that with you?

Are you able to just pop your seat,
so I can just check underneath?

They have to realise that

a lot of people who commit serious
offences are

members of the public, too.

They're going to be using effective
methods of transport.

You can put it back down.

Um, I may have to just feel around

your waist to make sure you
don't have anything. Yep.

So, the best thing for us
is to be out there on the road.

You can find a lot about murderers
by just simply being out there

and being proactive and help reduce
a lot of crime in Bermuda.

There are no serious offenders
unearthed today.

But it turns out that this man has
an outstanding warrant

and fine for driving through
a stop sign a few years back.

Yeah, the vehicle is coming back to
say the owner has a warrant.

Do you know of any warrants that you
may be aware of? Yeah.

Any tickets that you might not
have paid or anything?

You have $50 on you?

This man will be held in custody

until he settles his debt
to the government.

So, right now we're going
to transport the driver

to Hamilton Police Station
to sort out a warrant.

In the east of the island, officers
Jen Ysseldyke and Eddie Smith

are also on road duty in the sun,
doing some speed checks.

Just trying to target our speeders,

our prolific speed racers,
as we call them.

A lot of times, you know,

most of our issues are
road traffic collisions.

Officer Eddie is an old pro with
the speed gun and renowned

for guessing a vehicle's speed,
even before the results pop up.

Well, generally speaking, if they're
on a straight enough stretch

and they're not head-on to you - it
takes away your depth perception -

then, yeah, I can pretty
much get within 5k of it.

Years of experience.

The last car's about 30...about 40.

is 35 kilometres per hour,

and this bike is going much faster.

any popularity contests

for handing out speeding fines...

I'm trying to be proactive
and get out there

and just warn these guys too slow
down,

because we don't want to see 'em,

er, sprawled
out in the road, or...or worse.

It's 5pm, back at Horseshoe Bay,
and some revellers on the beach

have been drinking for more
than eight hours.

Watching them, sort of, deteriorate
through the day, I'm thinking,

"This could turn out really
quite badly."

Officer Holly may be laying down the
law when it comes to drinking age,

but, as a newbie, she's not yet
too confident doing it.

People don't know this is,
like, my third day on the job,

so it's quite nerve-racking.

If you haven't got any
adrenaline pumping in you

when you're on patrol, or walking
along Beach Fest, there's something

going wrong, because you can become
quite vulnerable quite quickly.

There's lots of glass bottles
on the floor

that can potentially become weapons.

My biggest fear was that things
could escalate quite quickly.

Ah, that was a group here that
I wanted to engage.

But she knows there are limits.

People can take advantage of
a kind nature,

and take you down the garden
path a little bit.

I've experienced that.

to bring out her tough side.

Although, I've stopped crying
so much because of this job.

You do need to nip that in the bud
quite quickly when you're on patrol.

I'm still going to be a nice
person, I'm still going to be kind

and empathetic,

but toughening up is something that
I'm going to have to embrace.

This job does desensitise you,
doesn't it?

A little bit, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
It does.

But I think that's how you survive
it, otherwise if we're all

crying all the time,
I don't think we'd get much done.

You never get used to it,
you just adapt to every situation.

Yeah. Definitely, with experience.

Suddenly, officer Holly might
need her tough side.

There's a report of a fight between
two drunken men on the beach.

and you're not really sure
what direction to run.

On sand, in the heat,
you're hoping to get there in time,

and what you're going to do
when you get there,

will you be able to control
the situation?

Thankfully, the situation has
calmed considerably.

Ten 60, it's not a genuine fight.

Horseplay.

Two brothers,
it looked to be like a fight.

Too much alcohol.

They're fine.

off the beach?

But getting the brothers safely away
is easier said than done.

They're both intoxicated,
one's really drunk.

The brothers travelled
to Beach Fest by motorbike.

But for their return journey,
the police send them

safely home in a taxi.

In Hamilton, officers Derek and
Duval are handing in

the suspect caught with

cannabis at the airport to custody
sergeant Dominique Simons.

A really important thing
is you just treat people

with respect and courtesy.

The suspect is from New York State,

where the drug has been
legalised, unlike here.

Officer Derek is bagging up
the evidence.

This is plant material.

It's a home-grown illegal substance,
cannabis.

This is suspected of not
just for personal use

but, um, also for intent to supply,
so it is a large amount.

The canine alerted to your luggage,
which was sent to a secondary

search by customs, and found three
clear plastic vacuum sealed bags

containing plant-like material,
with a total weight of 126g.

We're going to send
it off to the analysts

and they will verify for sure
what it is.

So, you have rights to let somebody
know that you're here,

you've got a right to speak to
a lawyer privately, you can

do so in person or on the phone.

Custody sergeant Dominique's job is
to book in those arrested,

but also to look out for them.

Do you understand your rights, sir?

Yeah. Yes.

Anyone coming here, it's...it's
not the best day of their life.

It's definitely probably one of
the...the worst days of their life,

and I can appreciate that.

Prisoners' welfare is very important
here, because it will dictate,

hopefully, how they act
whilst they're in the cells.

It's not a fun place to be here, and
I can really appreciate that.

His good nature can sometimes be
a hindrance to the job in hand.

I'm trying to work on not smiling,
because I try to, I guess,

put the best, um,
version of myself forward.

What I'm realising is some people
find my smile offensive at times

when they're in these types
of situations,

so I'm trying to work on that.

It's not, um... It's...it's...

I'm still struggling, because
smiling is just something

that I do naturally.

It's...it's...it's...it's cold.

The same thing.

Sergeant Dominique develops
concerns about the welfare

of the detainee
and decides to be extra cautious.

Just going to ask you some quick
questions

in relation to your health,

in the event that something
happens to you whilst you're here.

I was watching him on the camera

when he went into the cell,

just to make sure that maybe
he hadn't swallowed anything

or something like that,

and really he only went in there
just so he could have a moment

to catch himself and just to,
kind of, process

what's about to happen to him.

There's a lot of uncertainty
of being in a foreign country

and what our laws are
and what our procedures are.

So, in these types of situations,

I always try to explain to
people that it's...

At least you're here in Bermuda -
you know what I mean?

If you were in Brazil, Mexico,
Thailand, Bali,

their laws are completely different,

they don't have the facilities
that we do.

They can hold you for longer,
there's just...

It's just better. Is it the best
situation that you're here

for whatever you're here for?

Absolutely not, but if you had to
pick somewhere to be,

I'd pick here.

The detainee is booked in before
being bailed for a court date

the following week.

All in all, another smooth
intake for Sergeant Dominique.

As they drive back east, officers
Derek and Duval get a chance

to listen to the cricket, a big perk
of working the Cup Match holiday.

Doesn't make contact.

Back at the ground, officers
Daischon and Tulifah are still out

patrolling the crowds.

I would say the main challenge
today is the sun, you know?

The sun is taking its job way too
serious. It's very hot.

After day one,

Somerset have a big lead
at the halfway point of the game.

At this point it's impossible for
St George's to catch Somerset.

But I don't even think

we're going to win for another five,
ten years.

And with another scorching day
left to play,

St George's fans are left
hoping for a miracle.
