The reality is there are challenges.

..crime-busting in a place where
anything can happen...

I didn't really expect the cows
to run out the gate.

a serious road traffic collision...

He's in a lot of pain.

We think he has a broken arm
and maybe some cracked ribs.

..a drug-busting first at
the airport...

Right now, I'm telling you that
you're under arrest

on suspicion of importation of
a controlled drug.

..and on the beach,
the canine unit swing into action.

Drop the weapon, sir!

Bermuda has long been
the destination of choice

for the international jetsetter

seeking glorious sand,
sea and balmy weather.

Little wonder 800,000 passengers fly
into the island's airport each year.

Good to see you. Welcome back.

Keeping a close eye on today's
arrivals is Officer Paul Watson.

Originally from Tyne and Wear, he's
affectionately known as Geordie.

Primarily, I'm here just to -
I monitor the passengers.

I monitor behaviour
coming off the aircraft,

provide a level of reassurance.

Our role is just
high visibility policing.

A lot of people find air travel
and travel in general

very, very stressful.

Oh, he's just a youngster.
I thought he was...

That's my star... That's fine.

I thought it was
an old guy falling over -

that's why I went to check.

Nothing hurt but your pride, right?

LAUGHTER

There are a lot of Bermudians
who get very offended

if you don't say good morning,
good afternoon, good evening.

I see you've got
the good colours on.

Yes. Take care down.

And just hear the niceties of life.

Is the Queen here today?

The Queen? Yes!

Yes, I hope so,
because she died two years ago.

If you see her today,
then it's going to be a big thing.

Oh, you're right.
Well, bigger than it is now, right?

I talk the hind legs off
a donkey most days.

But, yeah, I enjoy it.

That's right. Actually, no...
This is terrible.

We still have a queen, but...

Officer Geordie's
been in the Bermuda Police Service

for more than 30 years,

but he's never forgotten his roots.

So, the most important
task of the day -

a quick cup of tea.

My philosophy for the longest time
has been I come to work,

I do my work, I go home,
and my work stays at work.

It's nice when I finish
to just go home.

When I first came here, you'd walk
down the street

and there'd be a car
with the windows wide open

cos it's pretty warm.

And on the front seat was
the lady's handbag with her purse

and all her personal belongings
in it.

And I'd walk past
and I was horrified.

Yeah, in the UK,
that would be gone in 30 seconds.

And it took me a while to settle
down and stop literally standing

by a car for 15, 20 minutes
till the person came back.

Having worked in the capital,
Hamilton,

and with the marine police,

Officer Geordie's been
an airport bobby for four years.

You got a new harness, boy.

GEORDIE LAUGHS

Today, he's joined by sniffer dog
Falco and customs officer Jamie.

He's not a German Shepherd, is he?

No, he's a Belgian Malinois.

Falco is part of a team of
five dogs that patrol the airport

on a mission to sniff out trouble.

Good boy.

They are trained to
look for a particular scent,

whether that's drugs,
whether it's money,

whether it's firearms, whatever -
a cadaver,

Whatever the particular dog is
trained to sniff for.

The handler recognises
the dog's alerting to something,

and then his reward is
to get his tennis ball

or his little chew toy
at the end of it.

It's a game for the dog,

but they play a huge role
in the prevention

of the importation of drugs.

Good boy.

Come. Sit.

WHISTLING

But this morning, poor Falco's been
caught short on the carousel.

He realised that Falco
needed the loo,

and he was dragging him to
the other side of the baggage hall

to get him outside.

Oi. Uh-uh. Uh-uh. No.

Argh. Off, off!

And Falco couldn't wait.

Same as you and I.

You need your potty break
every now and again, right?

After his impromptu bathroom break,

Falco's back on the job,

and he's picked up a suspicious
scent from some passengers.

I think there's a group of
five of them, by the looks of it.

But we'll just watch them
come through.

And then, if there is anything,

then obviously
we'll do the business, as we say.

That's him there, right?

The group's been tracked through
to the baggage hall,

and when two begin
to make their way to the toilets,

Officer Geordie becomes suspicious.

Excuse me, sir. Sir.

I wouldn't normally stop
you going to the restroom.

Sir, you as well.

It's just the canine alerted to you
as you've come off the aircraft.

OK.

My fear would be either that they
were trying to dispose of it,

or to hide it
so that it could be picked up

by somebody else within the airport.

There's an urgency to negating

any possibility
of disposal at that stage.

Do you have any cannabis,

or cannabis product
or any drug items on your person?

A THC vape?

Just a regular nicotine vape?

They were shocked.

I think a lot of tourists,
when they travel on vacation,

leave their brains at home.

And they're just like,
"Ooh, I'm going on vacation.

"I'm going to Bermuda."

We just need to satisfy ourselves.

So... I can't let you go
to the bathroom.

What we're going to have to do,

we'll just take you through,

they'll do a quick search
and secondary inspection.

At the end of the day, you know,
you've got your job to do,

and you've got to do
what is right in law.

The passengers' bags will now be
searched by customs,

but will they confirm
Officer Geordie's suspicions?

British-born officer
Jules Brassington is

on motorbike patrol with
fellow officer Thomas Greenslade.

Officer Jules served with
the British Marines and Police

before moving to Bermuda
14 years ago.

You have got the best of both
worlds over here.

Policing-wise, it's certainly
not on the scale of policing

back in the UK,
and the beauty of the place,

working in an environment where
you've got sun, sea,

and sand all around you is... Is...

It makes it a nice place to work.

Whilst on patrol,
Officer Jules bumps into

off-duty Police Sergeant
Helen McHugh

taking a break with her family,

and he can't resist checking that
they're following the rules.

How you doing?

While we're here,
we're going to do a boat inspection

to make sure we've got
all the boat safety equipment.

Paddles, life jackets and all that,

When you're off-duty, friends,
colleagues, are always popping up.

Everyone knows everybody,

everyone is generally friendly.

I found when I was policing
in the UK,

I had a good social network
within the police,

but I wouldn't say they're closer
friends than what I have now

with people in Bermuda,

because it's more of
a family network.

You build up
a real strong bond with...

With friends that
you meet over here.

Officer Jules was
born in Manchester,

so it's hardly surprising
that one feature of life

on a subtropical island has taken
a bit of getting used to.

For me, the climate is one of
the main things, really -

working in your full equipment
is hard work.

Mid-shift, and with temperatures
soaring above 30 degrees

across the island...

I'm absolutely melting.

..it's a good time for
officers Jules and Thomas

to grab a cooling snow cone.

It's the humidity levels that
make it really hot,

so a couple of hours
on the bike and it's...

To have a bit of a breather
at the side of the road

and have that ice snow cone is -

is heaven.

But then, they melt too quickly,
that's the only problem.

So you've got to eat them quick.

Just as well, because there's barely
time to cool down

before they receive
an urgent call to attend

a potentially serious
road traffic collision.

Do we know what it is?

Bike, bike versus car.

So, going through my mind on the way
to an accident,

well, you know, if they've got head
injuries or internal injuries

because you never know
what you're going to get

and it just keeps you on your toes.

The police canine unit
is in action all over the island.

Officer Robin McNabb works on
the unit with three-year-old Roni.

He is a German Shepherd crossed
with a Belgian Malinois.

He's very sweet, he's very loyal,
he loves to work.

He's a great dog.

He's a happy boy.

Officer Robin and Roni have been
partners for two and a half years.

He is a regular dog, he has to pee.

But he still needs
training every day.

Come here.

And it's just constantly
building that bond

so that him and I are working
together as a team.

Roni was trained in the USA
before coming to Bermuda.

What's this?

When we got the dogs...

Roni.

..they were already named,

but they said that you can change
the name if you want to,

and I was like,
"Oh, I could call him Batman,

"that would be so cool.

"You know, Batman and Robin."

But their passport said Roni,
and I just...

He's Roni,
we'll just leave it at that.

So, we're going to do
a bite work tracking scenario,

where, erm... As if a suspect has
assaulted somebody

and then run off and hiding,

and I've brought Roni
to try and find them.

is playing the part of an armed
suspect hiding in the rocks.

rigorous training.

And recreating real-life
scenarios like this is important.

this in case your dog attacks me.

Our main part is to be as
intimidating as possible.

If the suspect just gives up,
that's what we want.

He did exactly what
he was supposed to do.

Erm, one thing we do work on is
getting him to release.

When I tell him to let go of it,

he might not want to let go of it,
but that just comes with...

Sometimes they just get so excited

that it's hard for them
to do that all the time.

But now with the report of
suspicious activity,

Roni gets to do his job for real.

Some guys were down here using
drugs, possibly selling drugs.

Yeah. But these guys usually leave
their stuff,

so that if they're caught,

you know, like, they're not going
to have anything on them. Mm-hm.

I'm going to double-check
the right-hand side,

so just make sure you give that
side a good check. Yep.

To be on the best
of the dog's ability.

All of our dogs are dual purpose,

so they do detection
and apprehension and tracking.

So we just use them
for whatever's needed.

He actually found some
drugs that were hidden

in the rocks of the cliff.

So, if somebody was running off,

they might've shoved it there
to try and come back later.

He did exactly what
he should've done, he was good.

If you could've seen him
two and a half years ago,

he was wild and just
he's come such a long way

and I've come such
a long way with him

because I'm a brand-new handler
as well, and I just think,

you know, a year from now
and then a year from that, like,

he's just going to get better
and better.

Right, buddy, let's get some water.

At the airport, Officer Geordie
has intercepted

a group suspected of
carrying cannabis.

Just follow him through, guys.

But before he can take
matters any further,

customs will have to determine
if there are grounds for suspicion.

Customs have primacy,

so they will do the initial
basic investigations.

And then it's always
handed over to the police.

Nothing has been found in the male
passenger's luggage,

but the attention of
the customs team has

now turned to a woman in the group.

So you've got just one THC vape?

Yeah. Just the one vape
between the two? Yeah.

But she's admitted it's THC? Yeah.
OK. That's cool.

The passenger is carrying
a vape that contains THC,

the active ingredient in cannabis.

THC vapes are legal in
some parts of North America,

but not here in Bermuda,

so it's time for Officer Geordie
to step in.

Hi. How are you doing?

I'm PC Watson, OK?

And the officer's informed me
that you have a vape with THC in it.

Is that correct?

Erm, it has... So it's a THC vape -
cannabinoid product.

Mm-hm. OK.

I'll just let you know that

to import a cannabinoid product
into Bermuda is actually an offence.

I'll tell you that you're not
obliged to say anything

unless you wish to do so.

But what you say may be
taken down in writing

and given in evidence.

That is the equivalent
of your Miranda rights in the US.

Do you understand that?

Yeah. Is there anything you want
to say in response to that?

Nope. Right.

Not a big worry. OK?

I've just... No, that's fine.

I'm just complying with the law
and explaining to you what,

you know, the process is.

The tourist bought the vape
legally in the United States,

but didn't realise carrying it into
Bermuda was against the law.

It's an all too familiar
story for Geordie.

Most people, once they realise that
it's an offence to import it,

are, I'll not say in a state of
panic, but they understand

that this has potentially huge
implications to them

and you'll see the colour drain
from their face often.

I've got my stone face.
I've got my poker face.

I've got my angry face.

But I try and treat them with
a little bit of dignity and respect.

So what's going to happen now,

because this single vape,
it's less than 250ml...

Yep.

..that meets the criteria for what
we call an informal warning notice.

So you're not going to get arrested.

all I'm going to do is
complete some paperwork here.

Once this paperwork is completed,

I'll get you to sign it to say that
you accept the informal warning.

Yeah? That's fine.

Once that's completed,
then it's going to be destroyed.

You guys are good to go.

If you're bringing in 20 kilos,
it's a different ballgame.

But when you're just bringing in
a small amount, you know, let's...

let's just be reasonable with people

and deal with it in the easiest,
most informal way we can.

And, yeah, if it spoils your holiday
for ten or 15 minutes

and you're made to look
a bit of a fool at the airport,

then so be it.

But far rather that than, you know,

having to be dragged before a court

into day three or day four
of your holiday and getting fined.

Just be aware, guys.

If you're going to travel somewhere,

just look at the regulations
in place

for where you're travelling to.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just bear it in mind. Yeah.

One, don't let it spoil your trip.
Yeah.

But just bear it in mind when
you're travelling,

because you go to other,
other locations,

and it might be treated
a lot differently.

I think every single time
I deal with an individual

for an informal warning, they
breathe a massive sigh of relief.

Most are more than happy
to have it seized,

not get arrested,
and walk out of the airport

and get on with their vacation.

One case successfully dealt
with by Officer Geordie.

But he's barely caught his breath

before a potentially more
serious case crops up.

Customs have an individual who has
admitted to possessing

what I've been told are mushrooms.

So whether they are magic mushrooms,
I don't know at this stage,

but I have reasonable grounds to
suspect that it's a controlled drug.

Officers Jules Brassington and
Thomas Greenslade are racing

to the scene of
a road traffic collision.

Policing on bikes over here,
I think, is essential,

purely just cos
of the layout of the island.

The bikes are slightly smaller,

a bit more agile, you can
take them on and off road,

you can move around
a bit more freely on it,

but it does give you a bit of an
advantage, shall we say.

The officers arrive at the scene
in under five minutes...

SIRENS WAIL
How you doing? Yeah, just here.

..to discover
the collision could be serious.

What is it, just car versus bike?

Yeah, he was overtaking
when they were turning.

Right.

So, knocked him...

So, what it appears is -

a car's heading
in a westerly direction

and it's turning into
the public dock here.

As the car's turning,

the motorcycle was going
for the overtake

cos it's a long, straight road.
HE CLICKS TONGUE

And has not seen the car turning
and they've collided.

The car driver is OK,

but the motorcyclist is injured.

Officer Robin McNabb was
one of the first at the scene.

He's in a lot of pain.

We think he has a broken arm
and maybe some cracked ribs,

so we're just trying to create
a barrier,

cos the road is very,
very, very, hot,

so, as well as his arm pain
and everything,

he's also burning from the ground,

so I just tried to kind of get under
him to protect him a bit.

Locals rely heavily on motorbikes
to get around the island,

but heavy traffic and Bermuda's
notoriously narrow roads

leads to traffic collisions claiming
a life here every 30 days.

On a daily basis, we'll deal with
minor road traffic accidents

from what we call a 56, which is
non-injury road traffic accident,

to a 57, which is personal injuries,
be it bikes, cars,

but unfortunately,
it is happening a lot.

One sec.

Your training kicks in
when you arrive on a scene.

Once the ambulance has arrived,

if we need to block the traffic
initially, we will do.

Obtain as many
witness details as we can

and then we'll try
and establish what's occurred here.

While paramedics tend to
the injured man,

the police need to collect evidence

and manage traffic safety
at the crash site.

It's a busy road and
it's a fairly narrow road,

so, I was just making sure that the
traffic was moving freely,

but also allowing the emergency
services to work

in the middle when they needed to.

The problem with the traffic here is

if it had been in the middle of
the road here now,

it's one of the
main arterial roads on the island,

so we'd have had to have put a road
block down by the water lock,

further down here,

and then we would've had to have had
the traffic go across

onto the other side of the island,
so it causes a massive disruption.

So, we do, if it's non-serious,

in a sense of
the road can be reopened,

then we'll keep the traffic
moving as we've just done.

Safely in the ambulance,

the injured man is finally ready
to be taken to hospital.

Are you going straight away?

Er, yeah, just a minute.

Cool, cool.

And officer Jules can begin
to clear the scene.

Road traffic accidents,
they are common and,

unfortunately, that is one of
the nastier sides of policing

that you do see.

AMBULANCE BEEPS

And really, for me,

it's just making sure that
I've done it as best as I can.

But luckily, the casualty,
from what I hear,

he's making a full recovery.

At the airport, Officer Geordie is
dealing with

his second narcotics
case of the day -

a US passenger suspected
of carrying the hallucinogenic drug

magic mushrooms.

I've never dealt with
any magic mushrooms

or hallucinogens here
at the airport.

It's usually minor stuff or
major importations -

and I'm talking
suitcases full of drugs.

But magic mushrooms? No.

I've never seen that here.

Importation of magic mushrooms
into Bermuda is an offence,

but the severity of
the penalty depends

on the amount of drugs seized.

Yeah. After me.

So Officer Geordie's first step is
to speak to customs officials.

Just let me know what you've got.

Erm, so we have magic mushroom
chocolates

and magic mushroom gummies.

The goods containing the drug have
been found in the passenger's bag.

As many ways as you could
think to smuggle,

then they will try.

I had one where a guy left the UK,

had a pound and a half of cannabis
resin stuffed down his drawers

and sat on a British Airways
plane for 7.5 hours.

Does this product contain
a hallucinogen?

Officer Geordie needs to carry out
a careful examination

before he takes the next step,

and it's not looking good
for the passenger.

It's an offence to import
a controlled drug,

or what I certainly at this time
suspect is a controlled drug.

So, right now, I'm telling you
that you're under arrest

on suspicion of importation
of a controlled drug.

You're not obliged to say anything,

but anything you do say
will be taken down in writing,

and may be given in evidence.
Do you understand that?

I see you're looking a little bit...

A little bit flummoxed there.

Yeah. You bought it out there?

Yeah.

All right.

What he'd done was he'd very
foolishly just done a Google search

for magic mushrooms in Bermuda.

And as far as he was concerned,

bringing magic mushrooms
into Bermuda was not illegal.

Possession of the drug could lead
to a fine or caution,

and if found guilty of an offence,

there could be an even bigger
impact on the passenger's life.

Yeah. Right.

Yep.

He was Bermudian and he was
in the US on a work visa.

So he would have lost that work visa
and that right to work in the US.

I felt sympathy toward
the individual

because I do understand that it has
a potentially huge impact.

But at the end of the day,
I've got my job to do.

It's Watson, at the airport.
How are you?

Could you initiate an incident
for me, please...

1021 for importation
of a controlled drug.

Suspicion of importation.

I'm giving you a lot of leeway
here by not handcuffing you.

I don't think you're going to try
and run away. Ha.

If it is a bar of chocolate,

then it's not worth running
away for, right?

So, he was arrested.

He was taken to the station.

I think he was upset at the fact
that he could see

the potential for his future
basically just being washed away.

But we had the drug exhibit
fast-tracked.

It was done in three or four days.

and the chocolates and the gummies
were tested by the analyst

and were found not to contain
psilocybin,

the hallucinogen in
a magic mushroom.

And when he came back to
answer bail, he was just...

He was released from custody.

And to see the smile on his face
and the relief on his face

was actually quite interesting

because for him,
it meant if he was convicted,

it would have meant that he wouldn't
have been able to work in the US.

So he's left with
a huge weight off his shoulders.

Next time -
the race to find an elderly lady.

Sometimes you get some people
with dementia.

So just basically making
sure she's OK.

And it's carnival time
for Officer Chris.

And I've got a few cramps.
