On patrol today, officers Bryden

and Shandora are on the trail
of motorbike thieves...

My sergeant was behind a motorcycle

that he's identified
as being stolen.

tracks down a suspect who failed to

appear in court...

I should have melted about 10lb off
since the time we've been here.

The humidity is high.

It's not just the heat you have to
deal with, it's the sweat as well.

Today, officers Bryden Pedro
and Shandora Burrows are heading

out on patrol, hoping to catch
motorbike thieves.

With around five motorbikes stolen
every day,

it's a big problem in Bermuda.

Tackling motorcycle theft is a very
important thing for police,

just to help reduce continued
criminality on the island

and to target those who want to
use them

as a method of escape or
a method of targeting others.

My partner Shandora I've worked
with, actually,

since training school.
We were on the same training course

and came out in the same year.

We've definitely had our good times
and our more stressful times.

We've always, sort of, had a
friendly camaraderie

with each other.

We generally share very
similar opinions.

A few minutes into the afternoon
shift,

they respond to an urgent alert
call from their sergeant,

who's chasing a suspected stolen
motorbike.

Clear.

Motorcycle theft in Bermuda is
actually quite prevalent,

and it's very important we
sort of keep on that task

and get those bikes recovered.

Sometimes it can be...a bit
challenging.

CD582 turned up here
and I ran and stood.

My sergeant just
was behind a motorcycle that he's

identified as being stolen, so we're
just looking around for it now.

We're currently in the Rambling Lane
area, which is sort of

a frequented area, this little slip,
to get away from police.

Because it's a narrow pathway,
bikes can get through, cars can't.

So generally, whenever we see a
stolen bike, which is what we did,

in about 30 seconds, the cycle
turned up here through Rambling Lane

and got away from us cos our
cars can't get through the barriers.

So we were just hoping that maybe
he tucked the bike off somewhere

and we can see him again.

They're often used to
commit further crimes -

they'll take the plates off,
change the plates to

hide their identity
and to make an easier escape.

It's much easier to cut through
someone's yard

and hedge on a motorcycle
than it is in a car.

The bikes are pretty much stolen
every day.

These guys learn the skills
and then

end up using the cycles to do
other things or simply get around.

Sometimes it's just a 15-year-old
who wants to have a little fun,

which can be very dangerous.

It's obviously frustrating for the
people who the bikes belong to,

but you know that if these guys
are out there doing it every day,

karma comes around
and one day you'll get them.

With no sign of the stolen bike
here,

for officers Bryden and Shandora,
the search continues.

Afternoon. Good afternoon.

Officer Gregory White was
born on the island

and has been with the police
service for 20 years.

As a police officer, I would say
that I like to be out on patrols.

I just enjoy the job.

It's an adventure every day
when I come to work.

Growing up, my dad was
a police officer

and I'd hear his stories,
and it just attracted me.

It's a rewarding career.

I've had some people come up to me

that I dealt with as juveniles
years later and be like,

you know, "Thank you for putting me
back on the straight path."

It's good to have that
sort of feeling.

It makes you feel warm and fuzzy
inside.

Officer Gregory is on patrol
in the capital, Hamilton.

Yeah, requesting a 36 check.

So right now there's a gentleman
in a red shirt and

grey sweat pants, so the gentleman
right here sitting on the bucket.

He might have outstanding warrants,
court warrants,

so I'm going to stop and engage him.

He is a bit of a homeless man,
he sleeps in a...

In one of the local car parks,

and I was aware that he had missed a
court date.

Afternoon, mate.
How are you? Good, good.

There might be outstanding
warrants for you, all right?

So we're just getting them
checked at the station,

and if there is then you're going
to have to come with me.

There is times when it does
pull on your heartstrings

to have to, you know, arrest
somebody.

Once you've checked and if there's
a warrant out for somebody,

then your hands are kind of bound
that you have to

execute that warrant.

So we're letting him
get rid of his stuff that he

doesn't want to take with him
into the station.

Erm...

He lives rough, so this is
all of this stuff here.

And then he's going to be arrested
for the warrant, failing to

appear in court for trespassing
on private property.

Your role is to get them
before the magistrates in court,

so that matters can be dealt with
and justice can be served.

I still have a job to do,
and I had to arrest him

and take him in to custody.

No, you can't. Nope, you've been
arrested now,

so I can't allow you to do that.

I've explained to you - you failed
to appear in court for trespassing.

various offences,

so when you see him,
you still have to have your grounds

in order to check him,

for stopping and searching and that
sort of stuff, but for...

If you know that there's
outstanding matters for it,

then it's worth the check,

and today it proved that it was
worth the check.

..grabbing a quick lunch break

when the temperature's
hitting 35 degrees.

Take a moment to have down time

I like to come and sit off
and just sit by the water,

looking at the view.

There's many views like this
in Bermuda so it's really...

It's really great.

Bermuda has its own natural beauty.

We don't get a lot of lunch breaks,
so when we do have a moment,

it really is nice to come and sit
down and appreciate the view.

The two officers have received
a report that some stolen bikes

have been spotted at a municipal
dump on the outskirts of Hamilton.

So we're heading down to
Perimeter Lane, which is

just off the Glebe Road
in search for some stolen cycles.

One of our off-duty police officers
stated that likely

those cycles are being placed
down there, possibly stripped.

Motorbike thefts are so prevalent
due to the fact that

a lot of parts coming in
are sometimes hard to resource

and people can't either afford them
or get them on island.

Cycle theft in Bermuda is sort of
an ongoing crime, and in order to

reduce continued offences like
crimes against people or antisocial

behaviour from happening,
we try and remove the cycles that

have been stolen and return
the property back to the rightful

owner, as well as help reduce
the antisocial behaviour

that goes on when they use the bikes
to commit further offences.

Oh, there's a bike there.

Yeah, right in the bush.

That's a popular bike right there.
Oh, yeah.

Stolen motorcycles are typically
either hidden or dumped.

They don't want to be
associated with the cycle,

so they won't leave them
on their properties.

You don't want something that can go
straight back to you,

so they're usually stashed away.

Officer Mark Lewis has
joined them...

Hopefully the bikes are rideable.

..to help with recovering any
stolen bikes.

The bike in the trees.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

So we're currently at
Marsh Folly dump,

and about 200 metres as we drove in,
we saw some cycles in the tree line,

and we're hoping to be
able to recover the cycles.

The police gain access
to the giant dump...

All of our plant foliage and
everything that is cut comes here.

..and search for the bike that
Officer Bryden spotted

from the road.

That looks brand-new.

Yeah, this is new.

This is the one that we saw driving
past from the road.

Was there only a report of one?

Yeah, a brand-new cycle that
someone's put a lot of money

and love into,
and it's now here in the trees.

We need to verify that all
of the numbers are associated with

the cycle - engine number
and chassis number -

actually match back that it is
a confirmed stolen bike.

But generally when we see a bike
with no plate on it,

it would mean that it is stolen.

Ooh.

It is very warm.

One, zero. One, zero.
Eight, one. Eight, one.

Two, one, six.

When they pop the lock,
it pops the ignition over,

so they could've popped the lock
and rolled it here.

I definitely think that every
single person

who's more of a law-abiding citizen,
who has their cycle removed,

definitely are getting frustrated.

For the police, it's an ongoing
effort to just locate them

and try and identify who's
stealing these cycles

and returning them
back to their owners.

We'll have to wheel it out, somehow.

It's definitely satisfying when
you can recover someone's property,

recover someone's stolen cycle,
either get it back to them,

or know that it's not going to be
used to cause anyone further harm.

It's not just the thick undergrowth
that makes the recovery tricky.

The summer heat makes this
hard work.

Especially on a hot day like this,
you can't not sweat,

but, fortunately enough, there's
a little bit of a path this time.

It's quite a large property, lots of
hiding spots in these trees and...

The next step would be to put
the bike on our transport vehicle.

The bike, registered as stolen,
will be

stored at the police impound ready
for the rightful owner to collect.

I definitely enjoy recovering cycles
in the winter time, but it's

always an enjoyment being able to
get someone's property back to them.

It's a sultry Wednesday afternoon
in Hamilton.

Sergeant Helen McHugh and Officer
Peter-Paul Taylor are taking

a well-earned break from the heat.

It's very hot this time of day,

so we're just going to go
and get a quick iced coffee.

It's not a bad part of the day.

It's a nice little break in between
just to come out, and you

get to meet with the community
as well so, yeah, it's good.

Bermuda is a long way from where
Officer Helen began her

police career,
the somewhat cooler North Wales.

I used to hate the British weather.

I would have about five layers on
when I was patrolling.

I'd have the heating on,
my colleague would be taking

the mick out of me.

And here I complain about
the heat all the time, but...

But I love it!

Unfortunate thing is
there's only one cup holder.

Our plan today is
we're going to do a traffic

initiative in the Harbour Road area.

It's sometimes an area that
a traffic user will use to avoid

the main roads.

And do some traffic stops,

just general traffic stops to
make sure that people

have their driving licences on them,
that the bike or the car that

they're in is theirs
or they have permission to use it.

Oh, my word, I'm melting.

In Hamilton Police Station,
Officer Gregory White is with a man

he's arrested on a warrant
for trespassing.

So now the custody sergeant is
going to book him in

and give him his rights
and make sure he understands

what the process is
and why he's being booked in.

He has various offences
that he's known for by us.

I wouldn't be surprised
if I come into contact with him

again for another warrant
or some sort of offence.

Would you like to inform someone
that you are here at the station?

Is that a yes or no?

Unfortunately, we do have people
that are, kind of, just stuck

in the system and, you know, they'll
get caught and they'll get put into

prison and then come back out and
it's just a matter of time before

so and so's at it again.

It's important to search people
when they're in custody

because they can have things
in there that would harm

themselves or harm an officer
when they go in to attend to them.

Bermuda is one of the wealthiest
countries in the world.

On the flip side of things,
you know,

Bermuda isn't without its challenges
as far as, like, you know,

the underprivileged, so you do
have the people that are struggling

to find housing and
sleeping on the side of the streets.

They have a right to food and water,
so right now I'm just

getting him a couple of cups
of water that he's asked for.

It's hot out there, so...

I guess you can say there is
a bit of a sense of relief

when you hand that person over.

You've done your job
and you've done it satisfactorily.

They're going to be safe and that
your colleagues are safe,

if you've done your job correctly.

You do have times where you feel
sorry for them, you know,

seeing all his stuff there and
seeing how he's living rough,

but unfortunately, it's...

You know, you can only do so
much to help him out,

and he's got to try and do
what he can to help himself as well.

There is agencies like The Salvation
Army that are willing to

help out these guys.

As the saying goes,
you can only lead a horse to water,

you can't make it drink.

On a steaming hot day
even by Bermuda standards,

officers Helen and Peter-Paul
are on their way to set up a traffic

initiative with the aim of reducing
the island's high accident rate.

The majority are good drivers, but
there is some bad habits that leak

in and, unfortunately,
there is quite a few collisions

on the island, and this is why we
are engaging motorists

on a daily basis.

Yes, we had 13 fatals last year,
which is...

One is way too much,
but 13 is just way, way too much.

For a small island... Yeah.
..it's a lot.

So that's what
we're going to do now.

As long as we don't die
of heat exhaustion.

Local Bermudians are very
traditional.

If you don't say good morning or
good afternoon to someone,

you can hurt their feelings, so you
have to adapt to the traditions.

His vehicle's in order
but his licence expired in January,

so he's going to be ticketed for
driving without a driver's licence.

Unfortunately, I have ticketed many
people without a driver's licence.

They just forget or just can't be
bothered to

get a licence renewed.

We're just doing some vehicle
checks to make sure people

have their driver's licences on them
and that the vehicle's all correct.

If you set up on the roads,

it's showing a police presence,
it's showing we're out there.

Social media groups that will tell
people that we're out there,

that in itself is a good deterrent
cos it gets people to slow down.

People need to be
licensed on the road,

they need to be insured,
and that's as simple as.

I've been a police officer
for about two and a half years.

If I can help at least one person
a day, that's a win.

Whether it be giving someone advice
or even stopping someone,

issuing them a ticket, it's not
just for me of giving them a ticket,

it's "You've did this wrong, so
let's prevent getting more tickets."

Yeah. I am melting. Definitely.

I should've melted about 10lb off
since the time we've been here.

This is the kind of
worst time of the year.

The humidity is high, it's up to,
like, 80, between 80s and 90s,

so it's not just the heat you have
to deal with,

it's the sweat as well.

So usually, like, this time of day,

it's in the high heat,
so we will only usually get out here

for about an hour at tops and then
we'll need to go in for a little

bit of a water break and rehydrate,
get cool again and then go back out.

Especially with all this on,
it's a lot.

You can feel your body temperature
getting high.

Hot, hot, hot.

Go back to the office,
have a bit of a break and then

go for a patrol. 3:30 now, so...

It's a job well done for officers
Helen and Peter-Paul,

with no major incidents.

To be honest,
if I have no calls for service,

then that means
everything is going good.

And it's still being out patrolling,

but no-one calls 911 for help,
then it's been a good day.

Officers Bryden and Shandora have
come to the place where

stolen motorbikes in Bermuda end up.

So we're currently at the
police impound where we store

all of our impounded cycles that
have been stolen.

It's about five being stolen a day,

about three to five being recovered
a day.

This is the cycle that we recovered
from Marsh Folly, and the owner

has already received pay-out from
the insurance company, so it's

going to stay here with the hundreds
of other bikes that rest here.

The police service has a dedicated
bike impound manager,

Officer Mark Lewis,
and he's kept very busy.

We practically get stolen
bikes in here daily.

Just taking a picture cos I'm old
and my eyesight's going.

And then I'll run it through

our Transport Control Department's
database, cos we have access

to that, to verify that this frame
and engine number match the plates.

The impound houses more
than 200 bikes.

Stolen bikes are used in various
other crimes, not just joy riding.

You know, this is people's property.

And I know a lot of people,
you know, spend good money,

hard-earned money to get their
bikes, so it's kind of that,

you know, I want to help these
people get their vehicles back.

Yeah, it's in good condition seeing
that it's been here for a year.

Today, Officer Mark is reuniting one
owner with his bike which was

stolen more than a year ago.

Right, well, your bike is
in my little impound here.

It's in fairly good condition,
it's not stripped.

That's exciting.

Yes. ..property back cos...

Back on the road.

Yeah.

She does have some damage.

They popped the seat
for any valuables.

This is normally broken off,

so this'll probably just need to be
bent back into shape.

Not a very good place for it,
should've been on the bike. Yeah.

That's cool, that's exciting.

She has been sitting,
so she's a little...

Seized up? That's all right.
Little seized up. That's OK.

Probably had a little
salt water sprayed on it. Yeah.

Shocks are still moving.

So you're going to need
a minimum of the ignition replaced.

That's OK.
Much cheaper than a new bike.

Both me and my brother, we've,
always lived on the water

in the summer and stuff, and
sleeping on the boat.

We came back in at 6:30, 7:00 to go
to work

and the bike was gone, and so I
called my brother, I was like,

"Hey, where did you park the bike?"

Called the police, dealt with that
and we've been without a bike

for a year - now I got it back.

It was found within a mile or
two of where it was stolen,

just on the roadside.

Guys are stuck in town
and need a ride home,

they'll steal a bike,
and they'll just run the bike

till it runs out of gas,
cos they're not going to take

a stolen bike into a gas station
where they could be identified.

I'm happy you're happy.
Yes. Glad you got it back.

Yeah, man, this is like Christmas.

Cycle thefts could be
a downhill battle,

trying to chase a pebble
down a mountain.

It's definitely an ongoing problem
that we're trying to tackle.

I mean, it increases your insurance
premiums for even people

who aren't involved.

We're hoping to help reassure
Bermuda that we can make it

a safer place.

Next time,
a serious road traffic collision...

He's in a lot of pain.

I think he has a broken arm
and maybe some cracked ribs.

..and a drug-busting first
at the airport.
