The reality is there are challenges.

it looked like he had something

..the police are out on patrol,
trying to make the streets safer.

Raw recruits tackle
a tough training regime

in their quest to become
police officers in paradise.

It's tough,
and it's really humid today.

While, in the capital,
officers confront a repeat offender.

What's going on?

It's the start of another day
patrolling in paradise,

and officers are hitting the road

to calm the high-volume
traffic issues

that are a constant headache
on this small island.

Officer Jonathan Wood,
known as Woody,

is at the start of his 12-hour
traffic patrol.

Woody left the UK seven years ago,

swapping the Derbyshire hills
for Bermuda's beaches.

Before I came to Bermuda,
I'd done some research, obviously,

and I'd heard that it was
a really friendly place,

and that the locals were really,
were really friendly.

Very quickly, I found myself
really happy here,

and when I did go back to the UK,

even if it was just
a couple of weeks,

I was looking forward to
actually coming back to here.

The main thing that struck me
when I first arrived

was the beauty of the water.

Everywhere around the entire
island, it's...

You just never stop looking at it,
really

whenever you're travelling around
and I still even get that now.

Yeah, I just enjoy the view
when I'm driving around the island.

The island is just over 20 miles
long, with a limited road network,

so residents are restricted by law
to having just one car per family.

The solution to getting around
is thousands of motorbikes,

often with a passenger or two.

Just as the bike went past,

it looked like he had
something in...in his hand.

Possibly a mobile phone,
but I couldn't say for certain

that it was a mobile phone,
but it might've been.

And it looked like he also
maybe had somebody in front of him,

like a child passenger on the seat.

Hiya, you all right?

Do you know why I've stopped you?
Any ideas?

No, not at all. None at all.

Right, you've just passed us
on Parsons Road

while we were on the side road,
coming off Fentons,

and it looked like you'd got
a mobile phone in your hand

as you was going past. I was putting
it in my pocket but, yes, I did.

So you weren't using it?
No, I was putting it in my pocket.

OK, well, it definitely seemed
to be in front of you,

in this position,
when you passed us, all right?

So you're saying you
weren't using it?

I wasn't.

The reason we've stopped you is
because you've got a child up

in front of you as well,
being transported on the bike. Yeah.

phone in that situation,

it's super-dangerous.

but Woody is also concerned
about the safety of the child,

so he consults Officer Sasha Franks.

I know there's age limits, isn't
there? For, for front, erm, riding.

I think four's... It's like

I'm actually not
sure what the limit is.

I think it's that, I might
double-check, but I think that is...

while I give him the MAN form.

Sasha is just going to double-check
the age where you are legally

allowed to transport a child
on a moped in the fashion that

this child's being transported
at the moment.

The whole point of being a police
officer is looking after people

and helping people,
and protecting the vulnerable.

So, erm, as far as they saw,
there's no age, erm, attached.

However, there is an offence
for conveying someone

in an unlawful manner, so...

As there's no specific law against
a child being carried on a bike,

Woody decides against a fine

and instead issues
a Motorist Advice Notice.

My style of policing's probably
changed a little bit

since I came here.

I was probably much more robust
and strict in the UK.

You've got to adjust,
otherwise you'd just stand out

and alienate people.

I've marked it down as
manner of driving,

and the reason being is,

I don't know where you were moving
the phone from or to,

whether it was out of one pocket,
into another,

why you would be doing that,
but if you are doing that

and you're not using it,
the best thing to do,

especially with a child on board,
is to pull over,

come to a stop, and do it
at the side of the road,

cos you were still riding one-handed
and you didn't need to be.

The Bermuda Police Service

is always on the lookout
for new officers.

In terms of recruiting,
right now, our current staffing,

or complement of police
officers, is 360.

I...I would say that
the ideal number,

given the structure
of the organisation as it is now,

is 420, right?

So, that's a significant, you know,
gap of officers.

Let's shift it,

Today on the island,

a raft of potential
new police recruits

is starting a day of
public order training,

in the blistering, 35-degree heat.

My name is Chrislynne,
I'm from Bermuda.

My name's Holly.

I've always wanted to be
a detective, growing up.

The 14 rookie recruits
from around the world

will need to complete all tasks to
get their dream job

and a slice of paradise.

Get half of it on and then get a
buddy to help you finish it all off.

The faster we move,
the faster we can get through.

Let's go.

There are already around 30
British officers in Bermuda,

nearly 10% of the force,

and new recruit Holly Lavigne-Smith
is hoping to add to that number.

I worked with the NHS.

I was a paediatric nurse
at Bristol Children's Hospital.

I've always
dreamed of being in the police

and never thought it was for me
because I guess I'm quite,

I don't know, feminine.

My husband got an opportunity
to work in Bermuda

and at first, I said,

"Where's Bermuda?"

But, obviously, you only have
to google Bermuda

and it doesn't take long to think,

"Oh, that might be quite
a nice place to live."

Have we all eaten breakfast?
Have we all got hydration?

Holly and the others will be
put through this tough

training session by retired
Sergeant Brian MacNab.

Make sure everybody has
all their jewellery off, all right?

All their watches off,

because I'm going to beat the living
daylights out of you with this bat.

Public order training's for things
like crowd control.

If there was a protest,
we would be sent out to, erm,

minimise disturbance, really.

First thing we're going to do is,
we're going to pair up

and we're going to do
the confidence drills.

We're going to put you in shields,

going to link
the two shields together,

and I am going to give you
the confidence that you require

that those shields will protect you.

Get your gear on, get a partner.

Each of you with a shield,
centre of the gym.

I've always wanted to
be in the police.

When I was 15,
I did my work experience

with the Wiltshire Police in the UK.

With full public order gear and
35-degree Bermudan summer humidity,

Holly's already feeling
the pressure.

Very claustrophobic.
Not nice at all.

It's going to be a long day.

And what's great about being
on public order is that

once your helmet and your balaclava
is up, everyone's the same.

No-one sees you,
they see the uniform and that...

that's the idea -
that you're all united.

When you're standing there
in the kit,

everything in your body wants you
to run the other way.

They make it really real-life.

They make your adrenaline pump.

And you're just in training.
It's really, really exhausting.

then we're outside and we're
cracking on for the day.

It was actually really scary,
but, erm, the shield...

You realise how strong
the shield is.

The tests we do
is to give confidence.

A lot of people,
especially new recruits

who join the police service,

have no idea of conflict.

They've never been in a fight,
pretty much.

Not all of the recruits will make it
through to graduation.

You're standing there not knowing
whether you're good enough,

whether you've trained enough.

Knowing that, in a few minutes,

you might actually not have passed

and you might be
taken off the course.

I think that's a really real fear.

Bermuda may be an island paradise,

but it has the same social
problems as the rest of the world.

Late afternoon in the capital
of Hamilton,

Officer Chris Douglas
and British Officer Nick Akle

are called to a job just a short
walk from the police station.

Ah, it's another beautiful
day in Bermuda.

It sure is. Sure is. It's a
Bermuda-ful day.

THEY LAUGH

We got a call from the
City of Hamilton,

saying that the cleaners were trying
to clean the bathroom,

a gentleman was in there

acting a bit erratic,
possibly smoking.

And so the cleaner basically
locked the bathroom,

so we're going to go
to assess what's going on.

Officer Nick works in CID

and he's familiar with the local
repeat offenders.

Yes, sir.

What's going on?
I...

You understand why
this is going on, yeah?

You understand what's happening?

And you're in the women's bathroom.
Chill here for a second, yeah?

So, listen, I get a report that
you're smoking stuff in here.

We do have British colleagues.

They do bring a wealth of knowledge.

They come to us trained.

I personally know quite a few Brits,
and they're great.

It's definitely important to contain
this type of activity

away from tourists,

because it would affect our
hospitality industry.

We're looking for any drug
paraphernalia,

making sure there's nothing in here
that shouldn't be.

So, basically, this is something
that persons would use

for drug equipment.

They would take the metal mesh
and use it to smoke,

but we're going to throw this away,

being that we can't prove
that it actually was

in his possession or not.

Officers Chris and Nick
haven't found

anything illegal on the man,
so he's free to go.

If we did find any drug
equipment on him, or drugs,

we would have definitely arrested
him for that offence,

and we would've taken him back to
the station

and he would've stayed in custody

and we would've did the necessary
for prosecution for that offence.

All right. The things I do
for the community.

You know that, yeah?

It's an ongoing problem, and to get
them the help they need

to get off it,
there are certain places -

Turning Point, Dignity Housing -

do excellent work, are very good,
and a lot of people do come off it.

There's four or five people
who will always be like this

and we just don't have
the facilities to help them.

into public order training.

To become fully fledged officers,
Holly and the rookies

need to survive the heat
and the course.

I get impostor syndrome
quite a lot.

I think, once...once you get
impostor syndrome,

you experience
it for the rest of your life.

sweaty day.

If you feel like you are going
to collapse, yeah?

The shield, it looks really light.

It really isn't.
It's really heavy.

So I was naive to think that it was
going to be

a light piece of plastic.

It's...it's tough.

And it's really humid today.

If you do suddenly have some
kind of pain in your chest

or in your arm,
please stop immediately,

take your helmet off,
sit down on the floor

before your body puts you
on the floor.

We've got several well trained
first aid individuals

that'll be able to give you
first aid.

in Bermuda was in 2016,

but the police must always be ready
to handle every eventuality.

My parents, I don't think,
were very keen on me

going into the police service,
for obvious reasons.

The truth is that
as a police officer,

you are running towards the danger
where everyone's running away.

So, yeah, they aren't thrilled.

My husband, he's lived in Bermuda,

and he's experienced
a very different Bermuda

to what I've possibly experienced
but, yeah, I'm sure he'll,

he'll start to learn that it's...

it's not, all
pink sand and blue skies.

You're in full jumpsuit.

You've got you vest on.

You've got the public order boots,

which are fire-proof,
everything-proof,

so they're extremely tough
and heavy,

and so running around in that outfit
whilst holding a shield

is a whole nother level of heat.

visors up.

Welcome to public order training.

One of the recruits, Chrislynne,
has succumbed to the heat.

You OK? Have you got your water?

One of the reasons why we push them
so hard in training,

so they know exactly
how far their body can go,

and a lot of them
can push further than they think.

Officer Robin MacNab is on hand

to ensure any casualties
are taken care of.

It can be really difficult,
when you have a lot on your face,

to get the air in, and that kind of

just makes your body panic
a little bit.

So just that she'll probably feel
better once she has some Gatorade,

some sugar in her.

Do not leave her, do you understand?
Understand.

Just keep with her the whole time.

Are you listening to me? Good.

Excellent.

You feel, like, an exhaustion that
you've never felt in your life.

And people were collapsing.

They were fainting
due to heat exhaustion.

The public order training
is really tough.

There's no guarantee that you're
going to be successful in it.

You're exerting yourself
cos you're marching around

for a couple of hours and you're not
getting a lot of oxygen.

It can really...it can really
hit you hard.

You could go have a heat stroke,
you could pass out.

A couple of our class didn't make it
through training, unfortunately,

which was really difficult,

because we'd had five months
with those people

and we'd bonded
and had a relationship with them.

You must stay switched on.

That's why you spend three months
in training school

getting run around the whole
damn country -

so that you are fit enough to do
this type of work.

Inside, get your water.

Yeah? Stand in front of that fan.

Take your headovers off if you wish.

Get some air circulating
around your head.

I'm OK.
I just really couldn't...

I know. It...it happens to us all.

It's hot, it's uncomfortable,
and particularly in Bermuda,

because of the, erm...

That's the word I'm looking for.
Cos of the humidity, yeah.

You've got a lot of pressure on you,

and I put a lot of pressure
on myself

to not only complete the course
but to do it to a high standard.

I want to do this job really well.

You tell everyone that you're going
to be a police officer,

your family are expecting
you to graduate.

You've worked really hard
this morning.

You've listened to
what you've been told.

You've pushed yourself to what you
perceive your limit is,

and it's about you psychologically
pushing yourself beyond that,

if the need arises.

Yeah? I think everybody here did
a really good job,

and you should be
proud of your achievements.

With one more week of tough
training to get through,

Holly's dream job is almost
in reach.

British officer Woody
is in his eighth year on the island,

and has fully embraced
the seafaring way of life.

So Dockyard is the west,
far west part of Bermuda.

It's been made into
quite a tourist area.

Some really nice boats kept here.

It's about 23 feet.

The engine is a 5.7-litre

V8 Volvo Penta.

I think the best thing
is being able to own a boat

and going out on the water,
because I just know,

I just know I wouldn't have
done that anywhere else.

His passion for boats has been
rather more successful

than his quest for love.

On a small island, there's a limited
number of singletons.

When I first came over,
I did use dating apps,

but the turnover,
the amount of people -

you just basically get through
everybody on the app very quickly.

It took a holiday to Peru,
3,000 miles away,

before Woody eventually met
girlfriend Daniella.

We've now been seeing each other
a little over a year and a half.

I've been back there to Peru about
five times now in total.

I'm just going to drop
an anchor here, yeah.

We've done some travelling
together in Europe,

but this is the first time that
she's managed to come to Bermuda.

So it's her first time
on the island,

so, hopefully,
she's going to have a great time.

Woody has fully adapted to
life on the water.

Daniella not so much.

All this, actually...

I'm trying to move it
to the other side

What should I do?
It's going that way.

I'm panicking.

I just remember arriving, on the
first drive from the airport,

and just looking out,
out to the sea, the water.

Like you were when you first got
here and just being amazed. Yeah.

With the colour and...
The colour. ..how pretty it was.

Yeah. Amazing. Yeah.

Are you enjoying it so far?

Yeah, I mean, it's really different.

It's like a paradise.

Three, two, one.

For new recruit Holly, five months
of intense training is over.

Today, she and the other
successful recruits

are getting ready
for their graduation.

If we put them at a little angle,
for, like, a wedding.

It is, honestly,
the best job in the world,

and I just wanted to do it so badly.

So when they told us that day
that we'd passed,

it was like a relief,

like a weight had been lifted.

I felt like giving up
a lot of times,

and there were days when I'd go home
and I'd think, "Is this for me?"

But our training is
all about team-building,

and those are the people
I leaned on all the time.

Those people will be my best
friends for the rest of my life.

I like how they've painted
the floor green.

Everything's been, like, moving
towards this point, so

there's a bit of nervous energy
but we're all really excited.

Dream job, dream island -

I can't complain. It's, it's...

Honestly, it's such a...such
an achievement.

Two of Holly's fellow recruits

didn't make it through
to graduation.

My biggest fear during training
was that my dream was going to

come to an end very abruptly,
and that I'd have to

walk away from something that
I've wanted for my whole life.

We have the Bermuda flag
and the Great Britain flag

that we're going to be
putting up behind.

It makes it look a bit more fancy.

Oh, yeah, it's absolutely fantastic,
you know.

I'm really proud of their
achievements.

I think they've done really,
really well.

And, as of, I think next week,
two weeks from now,

they'll be out in the street
with members of the public,

so good on them.

We only wear this for really
important events,

so when you start,
when you put it on, it feels real.

You think, "It's happening now."

The occasion is marked by bagpipes,

testament to the Scottish
migrants who've been coming

to the island for centuries.

And the assembled dignitaries

include the Governor of Bermuda
herself.

The Commissioner of Police
will now call on Her Excellency

the Governor of Bermuda,
Miss Rena Lalgie,

to present each officer
with certificates

to mark the successful completion
of their foundation course.

I can't tell you how long I've
wanted to be a police officer,

so finding out that I'd passed

was truly, like, one of...

and it's always...

it's always nice to welcome new
people to the family

in such a positive,
encouraging way.

But notwithstanding, sort of,
for them,

for us, you know, we definitely
need, you know,

police officers in the organisation,

so 12 new officers, you know,
in the organisation,

keen to do the policing jobs,

is...is very important to me.

Holly has invited friends
to share her big moment.

And husband Sam is also
revelling in the celebrations.

My husband's very much like,
"Oh, I knew you could do it."

So, he was obviously proud,

but I think he never doubted it.
Whereas I think...

I think I doubted myself.

So, telling my four-year-old,
seeing his reaction to the fact that

I'll be going in a police car with
the lights on was really special.

To have gone from being a nurse
to now being a police officer,

like, what a, what a change

and I'm just seriously
proud of her.

She's really worked for this.
She's had to fight for it, so, yeah,

a very happy day for me
and the family.

After a gruelling five months
of training,

Holly and fellow graduates
will soon be on their first shifts

as qualified police constables.

Now the real work starts and,
yeah, putting yours...

putting yourself on the front line
for the first time

is going to be big,
nerve-racking,

but I feel ready for it.
