a jet ski patrol officer pursues
posh boats on the water.

officers are trying to contain
a fire as well as cattle.

I think I might have

And tempers start to rise in the
35 degree heat.

in the main city of Hamilton,

enjoyed by tourists,
locals and police officers alike.

We are on Front Street,
where the street is closed off,

and a lot of activities - fun, food,
music, dance, the whole works.

Officers Carol Skerrit and
Sherry Tucker are helping to show

a reassuring
and very lively police presence.

We are trying help this lady
assemble a tent here,

but we having some challenges
because we all are short people.

So, Harbour Nights happens during
the summertime

every Wednesday night.

It is a time where tourists
and Bermudians come.

It's a good spot just to have some
fun, relax, even, like,

a nice little date night.

Harbour Nights is very family
orientated.

I came here as a kid
and throughout my teenager years,

just come and enjoy, get some cotton
candy, some great snowballs.

Generally, it's a very safe event.

Not much crime really
happens at Harbour Nights,

it's very calm, relaxed.

We just show a police presence,
help out persons if need be,

and just enjoy our time.

But, even in paradise, the police
must always be ready for action.

They've received a report of someone
taking drugs right next to

where families are enjoying
the event.

The suspect is well-known to the
police,

with a record of strongly resisting
arrest.

So, first,
they must search him for weapons.

We're now going to conduct a
search on you

We knew that we could at least
sort of corner and contain him

there so that there wasn't as much
of a risk to the general

public outside, on the main street.

An off-duty sergeant,
enjoying Harbour Nights nearby,

rushes in to assist.

I've got nothing, I've got nothing.

You're under arrest for the
suspicion of possession

of a controlled drug.

You're not obliged to say anything
unless you wish to do so.

Anything you do say will be put in
writing and given in evidence. OK.

You're further arrested for
obstruction.

Now, officers Bryden
and Shandora must get their suspect

to their patrol car, parked
200m away, through busy crowds.

The street was already blocked off

and so it was hard to
bring our vehicle to us.

That was a main concern of ours
because we knew

that, as soon as we took him out
onto the street,

you don't know what's going through
someone's head

or what their reaction's going to
be.

Bermuda is policed by almost
400 officers.

Their boss is Commissioner of
Police Darrin Simons.

Bermuda is paradise.

I mean, call me biased.

He's led the force for almost three
years.

You smell that ocean air.

Not every place has just, like, a
wonderful smell, but Bermuda does.

It may be paradise, but the police
force has to deal with more

than 3,000 offences each year.

The reality is there are challenges,

so on the very lower end we're going
to have things like shoplifting,

theft, drug importation,
drug dealing.

We occasionally experience things
like robbery,

where there's a bit of violence.

And, on the very upper end,
you know,

we're going to experience
gang-related murders.

And you know what?
It's my job to police this island.

You know, I've got a wonderful
team of people that are dedicated

and our role here is to
make Bermuda safer.

For Brit Hugo Benziger,
life in Bermuda is a world

away from his previous
job in the Met and Kent Police.

If I had to describe Bermuda
to somebody, it would be it's

beautiful, very friendly,
and, unfortunately,

a bit expensive. But the first
two easily outweigh the third.

At 6pm, you can be on
the beach playing beach volley ball,

and at the weekends you can
have your own little boat

and potter around a small little
beach in the middle of nowhere.

So you can have a real kind of

millionaire's lifestyle without
being a millionaire.

You still work really hard, but
you're just not stuck on the M25.

Hugo's job is to police the water
alongside the coastguard.

Today, he's on shift with
Officer Matt Powell.

Three jet skis in transit
into the harbour sound.

Just a quick checkout to see what's
going on.

Just going to go along the coast,
OK? See you up there. Yep.

You know,
from a policing perspective,

the biggest issues really
are safety,

so they're out there doing checks
to make sure people's

vessels are properly equipped,
that they're operating those

vessels safely, they're not drinking
and boating and causing accidents.

The nearest land mass to
Bermuda is the US,

with the island a favourite
destination

for the seafaring super-rich.

So there's some incredible
boats in Bermuda,

hundreds of feet,
billionaire vessels,

and that's just a completely
different world.

These are the big fishing boats
and a lot of them are from

Florida, places like that,

and, as you can see,
some of them are 50, 55-foot, maybe.

I'd say a couple of million dollars.

Crime on the water, there's some
boats that are stolen, so there's

some boats that are broken into
and have things taken from them.

Some people just
doing ticket-able offences,

so they may, for example, drive
at speed, create a wake, which is

just unsettling for other boats.

Keep it five knots as close
as possible, thank you.

That's all I'm asking, yeah?

Cos you get a lot of wake on the
other sides,

other boaters. Thank you.

It's kind of trying to push a rock
uphill but, I mean,

they are slowing down, but they're
often saying

they're only on one engine,
and I think that's the minimum

they have to go, they have to
go about eight knots, I think,

that's the slowest that boat
will actually do.

And in the tank as well. Be, like,
$5,000/$6,000 to fill her up.

Is there any
way you can slow down a bit or not?

And coastguard Matt has spotted
another issue.

He's not even behind the wheel.

There are some boats that have
autopilot features,

so it's not an offence,
to my knowledge,

but, just a general
rule of thumb,

you should always be behind the
wheel, yeah.

In the west of the island,
Brit officer Jen Suter

and Sgt Caleb Jean Pierre
are midway through a 12-hour shift.

A court summons needs to be
delivered.

We need a summons to, obviously,

prove that we've told them that they
need to attend court.

Jen has been a police officer
in Bermuda for more than two years,

after "cutting short"
a career as a barber.

So I ended up in Bermuda
cos my parents moved out here.

I wanted a new challenge.

I'd done my previous
career for a long time

and I'd wanted to try something new.

It's just the summons I have to
serve.

I feel like you could make
a difference.

I can use some people skills
from my previous job in this one,

so it kind of helped. Pretty much a
therapist as a barber as well...

..so you deal with people's
problems there, too.

If you don't show up,
they're going to issue a warrant.

We don't want warrants,
so just come through, yeah?

You know, it's in his best interest
to go and he can't deny the fact

that he has been served this, cos
obviously he's signed it, so...

But one thing Officer Jen didn't
have to cope with as a barber

is the heat.

It's boiling! Is it? I'm sweating!

not sweat.

The heat definitely can
get to you in the summer here,

that's why it's nice to have
AC in the cars.

The feeling of getting in the shower
after a 12-hour day,

especially if you've spent
a lot of time outside,

is probably the best feeling
of the day.

SHE LAUGHS

Officer Jen's shift is about to
get even hotter.

She and Sgt Caleb
are responding to an emergency

report about a fire
on a nearby farm.

It was called in as a controlled
burn, meaning they would've got

permission from the fire
service to do it,

but the caller is saying that there
is no-one in the area.

Clearly, the area resident who
called

believed they had been affected
by the toxins from the smoke.

Just last week, Sgt Caleb went
to a similar unattended farm fire.

I mean, you can
clearly see there is a fire,

but that's blowing out to sea,

so it wasn't really affecting the
area residents.

This time, it's reported the smoke
is being blown over nearby

houses, so Caleb heads straight
back to the same farm.

Entrance is right there.

OK, watch out for your friend here.
I was. I am.

Hello. Just don't poop.
Don't poop right now.

HE CHUCKLES

Where was it last time, round here?
The burn pit is up there.

This is the burn pit. At the
moment, we can't see any smoke,

no signs of a controlled burn,
so we're just going to try

and make contact with the person
that owns the property.

We got a call regarding
a fire at the farm,

and some person's
complained about smoke,

but we just pulled up and we're
not seen any sign of anything.

Were you burning something earlier?

So it's definitely not here,
right? All right.

That's fine, thanks.

So they didn't have a fire here.

Sgt Caleb calls in to the base
to check out where the farm

with the fire might actually be.

Yeah, ten-four.

There was never a fire here, at the
farm, I just spoke to the owner.

Yeah, we're at the same farm
we went to the last time.

Yeah, that's the wrong farm.
Ah... ..Farm. My bad.

SHE CHUCKLES

I just heard the farm bit,
so this is the wrong location.

The correct farm is seven
miles away.

A smaller fire than last week's,

thankfully the fire service already
has it covered.

So we drove across where that

original scene should have been,
right? Mm-hm.

Now on the right track to help
assist the fire service,

they're heading toward another
unfortunate delay.

Oh, erm, the cows are about to...
Yeah, that's fine.

The... Stop. I can't get out of a
moving car, Jen. Sorry!

I didn't really expect the cows to,
like, run out of the gate,

but they did.

I was driving, so I'm going to say
that my sergeant forgot to close it.

SHE LAUGHS

Erm, no, we forgot to close it.

Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh!

We let them out, so we had to get
them back in.

The crystal-clear waters of Bermuda
is what life

living on a paradise island
is all about.

People, I think, like to
go on the water cos it's just

an opportunity to disconnect
in a way that you can't do on land.

There's 60,000 people in 21 square
miles,

you can only go
so far to sort of get away.

When you're on the water, it's,

like, Bermuda looks entirely
different.

A day on the water almost
feels like you're in another world.

Getting on the jet ski's brilliant
and if my captain says that

I can go on the jet ski all the
time, I'd be made up.

So just checking all the little
harbours, making sure everything's

fine, making sure that if
there's any boats going out,

saying hi to them, checking where
they're going,

check they've got safety equipment.

Officer Hugo and his coastguard
colleagues need to keep track

of who owns what on the water, so
every vessel needs to be registered.

Matt, could you see a sticker
on that jet ski? I didn't see one.

Hi, there.

Can I just check? I couldn't see
a decal sticker on your jet ski.

Is it a blue one like this, for this
year?

OK, so...that's an offence.

OK, so what I'm going to do is this.

It's actually two offences,
one which is not having

the boat registered -
I don't know if it is -

and then it's actually
not displaying it.

Today I'm just going to give you
one ticket.

It's just a payable fine. It's $150.

So on the jet ski you have
the ability to get a lot closer

to people. The focus is really
about safety.

When you're going out,
it's about respect

and engaging with people,
so communities on the water.

You want to have a nice balance
between letting people have,

you know, a good time on the water,
enjoying themselves, but also

boating safety is huge and nobody
wants to have a child injured.

And just having a child at the front
of the boat, it's just

one of those accidents kind of
waiting to happen,

in case they fall in, and then the
boat's just going to go over them.

Just be careful under there, yeah?

officers Shandora and Bryden need to
navigate an angry male through

hundreds of people to their patrol
car parked 200 metres away...

..and it's proving a challenge.

Thought process was, "How could we
get him back to our vehicle or get

"into a spot where we can bring our
vehicle safely for everyone?"

Luckily, Shandora takes charge
of the situation.

Here you go - sidewalk, sidewalk.

Yeah, I saw that there was less
people on the sidewalk,

so that's why I wanted to get him
over to the sidewalk as quickly as
possible.

Now get the car.

Yeah, sure. 121, possession of
a controlled drug and obstruction.

Yeah.

I told you.

Almost at their patrol car,

the suspect makes one last attempt
to make an escape.

SHOUTING

Hold on, cos I have to make sure
his leg's OK.

Another off-duty officer,
Chief Inspector Scott Devine,

is on hand to help calm the suspect.

Ultimately, the job in its entirety
was very successful.

Everyone was safe.

Unfortunately, my partner, Shandora,

her phone screen did get broken
and had to get replaced,

but that was the extent
of the negative part of it.

but the officers won't be getting
some peace and quiet any time soon.

Back on the farm where officers Jen
and Caleb mistakenly

thought there was a fire, there
are some slightly unusual escapees.

I'm just going to get them to go

I didn't know how compliant
cows would be, so I was like,

what was going through my head

at the time, but my Sergeant,
obviously, has dealt with cows

before - not that I knew.

The cows listened really well.

I was surprised, really surprised.

Cow herding in Bermuda is
definitely something that

I've ticked off my list of things
to do in life!

Definitely a story to tell.

Yeah, but cows are good like that.

They tend to respond to human
beings,

so you just direct them and...

They're domesticated animals -
they tend to do what you tell them.

I guess nothing that really
surprises me any more.

Seven miles away, a second
pair of officers,

Imani Scott and Daischon Chin,
have been dispatched to

the correct farm with the fire.

They've done most of the job
already - there's no more flames.

Persons with a farm property,

they are allowed to have a fire
to get rid of any trees or bushes.

However, they have to keep
in mind of the close-by

residents for the wind direction.

Yeah, so, as you can see, you have
houses right here behind me

and, if you were to look at
the fire,

the smoke is actually travelling
directly towards the residents.

Ah, whiskey, five, eight.
We can go 70.

The Fire Service is just using
a bit of water to dowse

the remaining ashes so that
no further fire can start back up.

Usually they give them the courtesy
as to just put the fire out

before any fines or any legal
action gets put into place.

Because it's causing
a nuisance to neighbours,

that's when it potentially can
become a police issue.

An offence might have taken place
if the farmer was burning

materials other than trees
and bushes and left unattended.

Well, all the water that's coming
from the water truck here

will water the plants.

They get a professional opinion
from the fire lieutenant.

Well, obviously the neighbours have
called and said, you know,

"It's a fire - I can smell it.
It smells like plastic burning.

"There's no-one around."
Mm-hm, right.

This may not be the first
fire of this type at the farm.

More than one occasion I've had this
here with this guy burning things.

Uh-huh? He's not supposed to be
burning metals and all sorts of...

Ah... That type of...

He's only supposed to burn small
bunches of horticulture. Uh-huh.

Officer Imani calls the farmer.

Hi, this is Imani,
the police officer.

What's up?

I'm here with the fire lieutenant
cos the issue is that, one,

the items that are being burned
are not supposed to be being burned.

Second of all, there's nobody here
supervising it and that is causing

a nuisance to the neighbours
cos somebody's called.

So we have orders, matters that
need to be addressed.

As the officers on the ground, they
must investigate the matter further.

Meanwhile, unexpectedly free
of this task,

officers Jen and Caleb are having
a bovine debrief.

We did good then, really.
Stroke of luck. We did really good.

So I think I'm going to resign
and just become a farmer.

Yeah, I'm going to put Old MacDonald
out of business, cuz. You get me?

Well, if only it was that easy
to get people to comply

with instructions, right? Mm-hm.

Yeah, but if a cow can do it,
anybody can, right?

We're supposedly more intelligent
animals.

All right, so I guess let's head
back to the station.

In custody at Hamilton
Police Station,

the suspect that officers Bryden and
Shandora arrested has been bailed

to appear in court for possession of
a controlled drug and obstruction.

Having to deal with such behaviour
is all part of the job.

Using force is never something that
you really want to use in the job.

No-one wants to get injured and you
don't really want to injure anyone.

You're there to help and protect
them

and help protect the rest
of the public.

We're trying to tone it back
as much as we can and use...

Yeah, de-escalate it. ..the least
amount of force possible.

So I guess that's just an example
of you just have to be ready

for the unexpected at any time.

We were walking through the crowds,
saying hello to everybody,

taking pictures with tourists,
and we had to switch to another

side of policing immediately.

While they were busy in custody...

..officers Carol and Sherry
were getting the better end of

the deal by patrolling the last of
the evening's fun at Harbour Nights.

The music sometimes is really nice,
it gets to me,

but I stay professional at all
times.
