My name's Reed Timmer,
and I'm an extreme

meteorologist and storm chaser.

We have got a sharp dry line
here moving out of the Texas

Panhandle into western
Oklahoma, western Kansas,

and that's initiating storms
right now.

Oklahoma is right in the heart
of Tornado Alley in

the Southern Plains,
right in our own backyard.

So we knew that this was gonna
be a big day for

the Team Dominator science
mission.

Will Clay,
our extreme engineer, had just

made our mothership drone that
can get close to the tornado

and drop parachute probes
into it.

It gives us the chance to
access all the data inside of

a tornado in three dimensions.

- We're ready to go.
- Just--

go watch, of course.

It's gonna be a big one.

And the ultimate goal of
our science mission is to get

a real-time tornado intensity
estimate, and then we can warn

people on the path
of those storms in real time.

Oh, incredible rotation on it.

Look at the rotation
on this thing.

The forecast models are
definitely showing

Northwest Oklahoma as
the prime zone for tornadoes,

so we blast it out to the east.

You definitely wanna get
there as quickly as possible.

I knew this was gonna be

an impressive setup
for tornadoes.

All the ingredients were coming
together in Northwest Oklahoma,

so we figured every storm
chaser would target

that area as well.

and I'm a storm chaser.

In the middle of May,
anytime you have nice storm

system coming through,
it's almost guaranteed that

you're gonna have some
pretty serious

tornado potential.

It's pretty evident that
Western Oklahoma is gonna be

the main place to be.

Heading out in Oklahoma's
never fun.

You deal with the poor road
network and, uh, lots of trees

and mountains that can make it
difficult to see the tornadoes.

This is a real deal middle of
May monster tornado type day.

Look at those daytime
highs soaring well into the 60s

and 70s, and that will allow
for it to be very warm

and unstable air mass,

perfect for severe storms
to develop.

Where we have the greatest
threat to see strong tornadoes,

so EF2 or stronger, is going to
be for Kansas and Oklahoma.

- We found Michael.
- 12 years ago tomorrow.

- I know.

That's when we drove into that
tornado over there.

Mike, he's my number one
chase partner,

has been for a long time.

Connor and I have been chasing
together off and on for

14 years now.
He's one of my best friends.

There's no one on Earth I trust
to get me safely within 10 feet

of a tornado than Connor.

I'm unique as a chaser because
I'd consider myself a hybrid.

I had a lot of OG mentors,
like the old guys, Reed Timmer,

Dan Fitz, a lot of
the older generation.

And going forward now,
we have all the live streamers,

and I'm kind of right
in the middle.

I find myself mid-20s,
been chasing for 10 years.

My name is Sierra Lindsey,
and I'm a storm chaser.

I am with my boyfriend, Jordan.

He's also my chase partner for
the last few years.

That was a bumper.
That was big.

So most of the chase community
is men, but I never felt like

I was out of place
as a female chaser.

I'm working towards
my meteorology degree.

I'm really trying to use
that to sharpen

my forecasting skills.

Having a chase partner,
especially Sierra, with me,

it really helps take some of
the job off of my hands,

and she can help me look
at radar,

possibly even help me
with cameras.

At the end of the day,
we can conquer a lot more

together than just being solo.

I'm in a perfect spot,
but I'm just getting obliterated

with hail right here.

My mission today is to get as
close as possible to a tornado

because it can really help with
the safety aspect when people

know what's actually gonna
be coming later in the day.

If this tornado goes from
the fields to a town,

we have a very serious
situation on our hands where

we're gonna be doing
search and rescue.

Oh, we're gonna be out of
this hail at some point here.

The models have rogue
supercells across Western

Oklahoma, but it keeps giving
them and then taking them away.

The question is, which setup do
I think is gonna produce?

when I feel ready to move.

It definitely does get tense
in the moment.

Sometimes the tensions
get high.

You're trying to make smart
decisions in a fast moment.

it's like cat-and-mouse game,

intercept a tornado.

We saw other storm chasing
vehicles out there as well.

as close as they can or be

the closest one to the tornado.

When the tornado crosses
the road right in front of us,

it hits a shed or an outhouse,

damage to it.

situations, it's tricky because

you're thinking, "I gotta
protect my significant other.

I don't wanna put them
in danger."

But obviously, what we're doing
is very dangerous.

But we've had
these conversations and I think

we have a very good trust
built together.

those high stress situations,

it's pretty easy for tempers to
get fired up when we're trying

to get good video.

We are back-roading it to
the east to get away from

the crowds, and it's wild.

There are 10-plus storm
chaser groups.

That's why I personally prefer
to be on the back roads,

is so we'd have to deal
with a lot less.

It's the beginning of a very

There are no words to properly
explain the feeling of being

15 feet from a strong tornado.

And once you have that,
you chase to experience that

over and over again.

After the tornado dissipates,

we have a really good
opportunity to reposition.

The storm has everything
that we think

it might need to keep going
and being just

a tornado machine for hours.

We gotta pull off right here.

I'm getting out.

Look at that.

It's close.

A new tornado is trying
to form right over

the town of Arnett.

It was a type of day
where there was

one supercell that initiated,

and a lot of times those storms
will become cyclic,

where they'll produce one
tornado after another,

and that's exactly what
happened in northwest Oklahoma.

Go get it, give me,
give me, give me.

Yeah .
You're up.

We finally had our science
mission ready to go.

OK, get ready.
Get ready to launch.

So, we blasted off
to the east.

I wasn't missing this intercept
for anything.

I think it's down here.

I'm thinking that the storm
will be up here by

this intersection on the road
right here.

I'm Tanner Charles.

I'm a professional
storm chaser.

As we're heading down,

I'm seeing the tornado warning
going off.

And so, I'm heading straight to
there 'cause I know this is

gonna be where the next big
tornado happens.

We're trying to get there
as fast as possible.

I have my good friend Jeremy,
who's the driver for the first

half of the season for me,
and then also my friend

Ty Rogers who's a professional
FPV drone pilot.

- Ty?

And so, our goal was to
drone a tornado.

We've put a lot of hours into
building the right drone.

I would say, technology is like
the biggest factor.

We wanna see a drone dive
bomb down the funnel,

like wrap around it.

You don't know what kind-- what
kind of footage could do to help

you understand
very violent tornadoes.

OK, the drone's set up.

I've never really droned
a tornado before.

You know, neither has Ty.
He is pumped.

He is so ready.

And so, we were just
coming on the road

so we could blast west
and just get there.

Probability of two or more
tornadoes-- seventy percent.

Probability of one or more
strong tornadoes--

sixty percent.

My name is Sarah Kassabian,
and I'm a storm chaser.

I grew up in Oklahoma,
born and raised.

And whenever I'm chasing in
Oklahoma, I'm very comfortable

in that space because I grew up
with the kind of storms that

we should be seeing today.

I know the state
like the back of my hand.

So, it takes out some of

the uncertainty,
which is an advantage.

My chase partner is
Brandon Jarvis.

Jarvis is great because
he understands the dynamic

that we have.
This is my truck that we're in.

This is my show.
But he's my partner.

So today we're chasing
with Brett.

We're right behind him.

Brett is absolutely a mentor.

I'm not a meteorologist.

I've never studied meteorology.

So having Brett,
who is a meteorologist,

is extremely important.

Sarah is a very
exuberant individual.

If she has her mind set to
being in a location or a place,

she's gonna get there.

What's that south option
you said we were taking?

Cool.

My goal today is to get as
close to a ripper as I possibly

can, to get closer
than anyone else,

to get better footage
than anyone else.

We get a tornado warning.

And at that point, we gotta go.

So my primary chase partner
that's in my car

is Heath Lollar.

He's usually driving,
but today I decided that

I wanted to get back
behind the wheel

just because I wanted
that control.

I have not yet let Jarvis
drive us anywhere near a storm.

I want to have the final say in
exactly where we're positioned.

And so I was experimenting
with the idea

of letting Jarvis drive.

But then I get nervous
because today I really need

this tornado.

Go, go, go.

Get in the truck.

Everything's fine.

These guys have got to go.

So we're close to the town
of Arnett.

Yeah, no kidding.

Come on, guys.
Let's go.

We hit a dirt road.
We're flying west.

Oh, my God, go!

Here we go.
Here it comes.

Here comes the tornado.

So now we have the beginning
of a ripper.

We're in perfect position,

so we pull off on the side of
the road so that we can sit

there and watch the storm
as it develops.

Yeah.

Bro, it's coming.

It's across
the road right up there.

We gotta go.

If the storm or the tornado
turns to the right,

then it's moving directly
at me.

He needs to go.

Today is just too big
of a day.

I take matters into
my own hands.

I'm not gonna miss a tornado
because Brett's buffering.

Yo.

She just jumped
in front of you.

Dude!

She flies around me because
she wants to get

as close as she can.

Right behind us, we see
all the storm chasers

coming with us toward
this tornado.

We're about to get
a good view of it

right over there.
- Wow.

Wow, dude.

Whoa!

Nice tornado on the ground
right in front of us.

Yeah, look at that.

That's your first tornado, Ty.

Wow.

That thing is violent.

Look at the structure.

Ty, when we get closer to it,
you can definitely drone that.

So we're seeing the storm
for the first time.

It's gorgeous.

And the whole storm starts
opening up to us as we're

racing towards it.

That's what we're looking for!

Wow.

As we get closer to it,
I'm realizing that the tornado

is on a direct collision course
with the town of Arnett.

It has about, like, 500 people,
but it doesn't matter how small

the town is.
They're still in danger.

And so the fear is that

this tornado is gonna go
right through town.

Turn around, guys.
Turn around, turn around.

Go, go, go.

All right, get ready
for the drone.

Yep, get ready for the drone.
Prep the drone.

Oh.

Ty is trying to figure out
if he can fly his drone.

And a ball of ice the size
of a baseball

comes down from the sky.

There we--
Lord, protect the vehicle.

- Oh, my God.
- Here we go.

And I'm just like, "Ah,
man, this is our only drone."

If this thing gets hit by hail,
we're done.

- Oh, shoot.
- Yeah, just keep it off.

Yeah, right up here,
you gotta take a right.

In the moment, I just said,

no, like, we're not
gonna risk it.

You know, the footage we could
have gotten would have been

really amazing and epic.

You know, to not be able to fly
it when there's a tornado on

the ground is kind of tough.

Sometimes you don't get
the things that you're

going after.
And that's OK.

And right now, we're just
trying to get close enough to

the tornado to deploy the FPV
drone, so we can send some

sensors into it.

We'll have to go east
and then north again

because these are
all shot here.

It looks awesome
out the front right now.

We need to be stopped to
launch the drone.

constantly maneuvering.

It's gonna blow Arnett

So there's kind of this
lingering hopelessness that

you feel for the folks that are
in the path of this storm.

We gotta go.

People may be about to get hit
if it continues

on its trajectory.

- What a tornado!
- Oh, my God.

I got debris coming in
the window here.

Oh, it's hitting stuff.

Oh, that tree just
got obliterated.

Oh, Jesus.

It's going into town.

So that's a huge danger.

It turns from, "This is the most
awesome thing I've ever seen,"

to, "Oh my goodness, I hope
somebody's not hurt."

We're gonna be really close
to Arnett.

You're suddenly very concerned
for the people in Arnett with

this supercell barreling
toward the town.

And you know that lives
are in danger.

Get ready.

Beast mode activated.

There we go.

There's such a small window
to launch the drone.

I obviously wanna
launch immediately.

I don't have a lot of patience.

A lot of times, it'll dissipate
before you get to it.

I need to go faster or slower.

- No, it's disarmed.
- What happened?

Once we start moving, it has
a hard time keeping connection

with the drone.

And so I did have to put
the pedal to the metal

there for a little bit.

Right towards Arnett.

It's roping out!

All right, I think we're
occluding right here.

It is occluding.

That occlusion is usually at
the end of a tornado

life cycle.

So, the funnel starts to
thin up.

The town did not get leveled.

No one was hurt,
thankfully, there.

And we're breathing a sigh of
relief because

this was so close
to being a disaster.

That couldn't have gone
any better.

Perfect crossing.

This is it.

This is the moment that makes
it all worth it.

There really is no experience
like it.

There's this tornado.

It's not hitting
any structures.

It's not injuring people
or hitting homes.

It's a storm chaser's dream.

That town is so lucky, bro.

Well, we didn't get to drone
the tornado, but,

like, for real,
that town is so lucky.

Oh, today was fun.
Today was super fun.

I've got, like, shards of corn
and stuff down my pants.

Just tickles a little bit.

The drone was racing to it at
peak intensity, but we never

could quite get into the core
flow of that tornado because it

dissipated just as it was
coming into town.

That means that the mission
has failed if the drone cannot

quite reach the tornado.

But any science mission is not
always defined by failure.

Woof.

I'm gonna need to see
your storm-chasing licenses.

Talk about how many people
storm chase now.

And cars have been past us
for like the past ten minutes,

just to give you an idea of how
many people are out here

chasing today.

So it's very lucky that
this tornado roped out

right outside of Arnett.
