The first of us came to this country

over 100 years ago.

We called ourselves issei,

the first generation of Japanese in America.

I didn't come to get rich.

I wanted just enough, just enough to return

to my village in Kawashima and maybe buy some land.

We issei called it ,

raise a single banner.

To be somebody, that was every issei's dream.

That was.

But for most of us, the years went by.

We planted roots in this country.

This is my home now here in Los Angeles,

in this small place we call Little Tokyo.

They just ran out of right now.

To walk through the crowds

and see young couples, children.

It's like the old days before the war

when Little Tokyo was the center for Japanese Americans.

Nisei Week is always a big event for me

and my friend, Tatsumi.

I miss the Japanese school.

Churches, the family homes just south of here,

and the boarding houses where bachelors like us

could find a real home-cooked meal.

you could walk down to the Tokyo Club, gamble a bit,

drink sake, or just relax with friends.

But now, it's all big business, no.

Japanese corporations and banks.

We're not in new home. We're issei.

Only a few issei like ourselves live in these hotels,

but the streets are still safe, the rent is cheap,

and we have our memories.

Tatsumi and I, Yamada and Komatsu,

we all live at the Mikado.

Just one year in America

and you could return with 10,000 yen.

I arrived in Seattle in 1910

and got a job with the Southern Pacific.

I worked hard and every month sent money home to my parents.

Later, after I had moved south and worked the farms

in the Central Valley, I decided to try the city.

It was in the summer of 1935, just at Nisei Week.

It's the spirit that matters.

This place, Little Tokyo was built by people

who came and struggled for a new life.

It's their kimochi, that spirit which must be preserved.

It's a power that can draw us together during the bad times.

It's a strength that we can celebrate during the good.

It's a spirit that everyone needs to raise their banner.
