[Shatner] Powerful demons
dead set on possessing

the souls of the living,

evil energies

drawn to the carnage
of history's

bloodiest battlefields,

and deals with the Devil,

whose price
is eternal damnation.

Throughout history, people
have believed in demonic forces

hell-bent on tempting
the vulnerable,

influencing events, and even
possessing the human soul.

And many think that
the prince of demons,

Satan himself,

has created an army
of evildoers

responsible for waging
an unholy spiritual war

against all of humanity.

Could there really be
supernatural entities

whose mission
is to bring hell to Earth?

Well, that is what
we'll try and find out.

? ?

[Shatner] The Bible
is recognized

as the most popular book
in history.

It has not only shaped
the spiritual identity

of billions of people,

but it also revealed an evil
being of incomprehensible power.

He introduced sin
to the Garden of Eden

and even offered Jesus Christ
all the kingdoms of the world

in exchange
for casting God aside.

He was once the mightiest angel
in the kingdom of Heaven,

but now he's better known
as Satan.

[Joseph Laycock]
In the Christian tradition,

the beginning of time,
there's a civil war in Heaven.

Lucifer, also known as Satan,
is the greatest

and most powerful of the angels,

and he decides
that he would be better

at ruling the universe than God.

So he launches a civil war,

and a third of the angels
join him in this rebellion.

And they're eventually defeated
by the loyal angels,

led by the archangel Michael,
and cast down into Hell,

where they become demons.

Satan is the head of Hell.

Uh, he rules over other
fallen angels like himself.

He's the worst nightmare
you could possibly have,

and he's bound
to endlessly try and tempt us

so that we sell our souls
or we lose our souls to him

and eventually join him
and his legions in Hell.

The Devil spends eternity
proving God was wrong.

And he does so
by trying to seduce

that which God loves,
human beings.

He spends his eternity trying

to rip those souls
away from God.

He will seduce,

lie, cheat,

steal, abuse,

do anything he can
in order to get human beings

to choose his plan
and not God's.

[Shatner] Many believe
this unholy war

being waged by the Devil

may not simply
cost humanity our lives,

but our very souls.

But does Satan's
demonic army really exist?

While those that belong

to other religious traditions
may disagree,

many Christians
guided by scripture believe

it has been foretold.

We have been warned that a dark
force is coming towards us.

There is a forbidden book,
the Book of Enoch,

that was not included
in the Bible,

that tells us that God

imprisoned Satan and his fellow
demons, but they will be back.

And the Book of Revelation
warns us

that Satan will return,
and he will recruit an army

that will be more numerous
than the grains of sand.

And it will come from
the four corners of the Earth.

[Laycock] There's a paradox
in demonology,

which is that demons are
supposed to be these very nasty,

defiant, chaotic entities.

And yet, so often,
they are described as being

highly organized, akin to
an army with specialized units,

where each demon
has a boss and a mission.

And that may be because
in the Christian tradition,

demons are fallen angels

who have been cast out of Heaven
and sent into Hell, they are

a force of evil in the universe

that are preparing
for a final battle.

[Shatner] The reality
of Satan's army remains

a matter of prophecy and belief,

but throughout history,
many have wondered

has Satan,
along with his minions,

already entered the battlefield?

A lot of people believe
that Satan and Satan's army

are waging spiritual warfare.

Both against God and Heaven,
but also against people.

He could, um,
wage war against you.

He could cause you harm,
usually, in times of turmoil.

[David Clarke] People have
these experiences

with what have been
described as demons.

People see winged figures.
They see

all kinds of mysterious,
unexplained creatures.

There's been lots of surveys
that have been done on this.

You tend to find that,
around one in ten

of the population,
whether they are religious

or not religious, say
they've experienced malevolent

entities, and that's what
I would describe as demons.

What are the cause of these
things? No one really knows.

[Shatner] While skeptics
dismiss all kinds

of alleged demonic encounters,

perhaps seeing is believing.

Such is the case
for those whose mission

is to face the Devil head-on,

like an exorcist with
about 20 years of experience,

Father Carlos Martins.

We're in a war, and in that war,
there's invisible beings

that are mightily powerful,
and they're coming for us.

[Shatner] Remarkably,
in recent years,

Catholic priests
around the world

have seen a staggering rise
in the demand

for demonic exorcisms.

In Italy alone-
the home of the Vatican-

reports claim
there have been 500,000

exorcism requests per year.

This surge is also happening in
the United States and elsewhere,

but there's simply
not enough trained priests

to investigate all these
alleged possessions.

And it begs a chilling question.

Is humanity being targeted
by the forces of evil

like never before?

[Martins] We presume
that what people think

are demonic manifestations
are rooted in natural causes.

We begin with that presumption.

We employ medical professionals
that assist us

in helping diagnose
your condition,

which, more often than not,

is a medical condition.

But not always.

So how do you isolate
what is demonic?

Through signs. Signs that

the-the natural sciences
cannot account for.

Superhuman strength.

Knowledge of hidden things.

To know and speak with facility

languages that the individual
has never been taught.

Extreme aversion to holy things.

Visceral reaction to holy water,

to blessed objects,
and so forth.

[Shatner] Every priest trained
in the rites of exorcism-

the series of prayers
and practices

meant to cast out
a demon from its host-

must determine if the alleged
possession is genuine.

And over the course of decades,

Father Martins believes
he has faced

creatures from Hell.

I was called to-to one case.

This woman, um, was

a quite pleasant woman
when she was not

in a state of possession,
but when the demons were active,

uh, she was easily, to this
day, the most violent case

that I've ever encountered.

When I do a session, I want
the victim seated in a chair.

I want a holder on each arm.
That prevents me

from getting hit
in the face or anyone else.

One of the holders there
was a huge man, 300-pound man,

uh, with lots of muscle.

And as we were getting
things set up, she just

threw him across the room.

So, he went through the air
at least 15 feet.

And then, she went and pointed
at a light switch on the wall,

and one of the screws
unscrewed itself,

came through the air
into her hand,

and she drove it
into her left arm.

We never saw that screw again.

So, we're facing evil now.
The battle is on.

In the course of that session,

she hit me in the face so hard
it-it sent me flying,

and what I didn't realize
was that my skull was so damaged

I needed two surgeries to repair
the damage to my skull.

It is a battle.

The battle
is happening every day

and has been happening every day

since mankind was created.

[Shatner] While many faithful
believe that demonic possessions

are the result of inviting sin
into your life,

others have wondered,
could someone, without fault,

unknowingly walk into
the sanctity of their own home

and find that the Devil

is already there?

[Shatner reads on-screen text]

In this ordinary American
town, something very strange

is about to happen in the small
house at 3860 Carolina Street.

Because, for the new residents,

it becomes abundantly clear

this house is already occupied

by demons.

[Picknett] Latoya Ammons
moved with her children

into a modest, rented house

in Gary, Indiana,

and very quickly after that,

extraordinary things
started to happen.

There was a huge swarm of flies,
but this was winter.

You don't get flies in winter.

There was vile smells
or pools of oozy slime.

The Ammons children
found themselves being

thrown from their beds
by invisible forces,

and the children began
to behave strangely,

which is, of course, terrifying.

[Shatner] This strange activity
prompted Latoya Ammons

to contact
the Gary Police Department,

but without evidence of a crime,
there was little they could do.

Desperate and terrified,

the Ammons turned to
a local exorcist named

Reverend Michael Maginot.

I have done
18 sanctioned exorcisms,

but probably
been involved in about 500

deliverance and other house
blessings and other phenomena.

And they wanted me to come in
to perform an exorcism

because a boy
just walked up the wall

backwards at the hospital.

Latoya's mother, Rosa,
was holding the boy

by the hands when that happened.

He flipped over her head
and sat down

and looked at them
with this kind of grinnish smile

and eyes that were white.

This was in a hospital
and witnessed by

three other professionals:
the nurse,

a psychiatric doctor,
and then there was also

the child protective service
person there.

They all ran out
of the room, and then,

they came back with policemen,

and at that time,
uh, the boy was

back into his normal senses,

and they were saying,
"How'd you do that?"

And he had no idea
what they were talking about.

[Shatner] Based on the veracity
of eyewitness accounts,

Reverend Michael Maginot decided
to investigate the Ammons' home.

And upon entering,
he quickly observed

unnatural events
in this accursed house.

I went to the home
and interviewed both

Latoya and her mother, uh, Rosa.

And it started with
the bathroom lights flickering.

Later, the rods
on the venetian blinds started

rocking back and forth.

And then, I saw this big, huge
oil dripping from the blinds.

And then, all of a sudden,
she said, "I'm freezing."

And then, I asked her,

"Do you mind if I put
my crucifix on your forehead?"

And so, I did,
and she began convulsing.

That whole place
was filled with demons.

[Shatner] The stories
surrounding this house of demons

are still well known
in the local community.

But why would this home
be- allegedly-

infested with dark forces?

When we're doing
our investigation,

we were actually thinking
someone might be buried there.

We discovered that there is,
underneath the stairs,

it's a cement basement,

but there was
a cutout with dirt in it.

So we had the policeman dig

in case it did turn
to be a crime scene.

And so, we got about
two and a half feet deep,

and we find a fingernail
of a woman,

a painted fingernail.

Then we kind of saw something,

looked like
a-a cotton undergarment.

We dug a little deeper,
and then,

we started to find more items.

And we started thinking
it's possible

that there were rituals
that were done in this house.

If a house, um, is usually
said to be infested,

it's usually done by
practicing occult arts in it.

So, if you put a pentagram
in your basement

or if you perform
rituals and things,

you're creating a portal

that will open the door
to demonic activity.

And eventually,
it could take possession of you.

[shrieking]

[Shatner] Do the
unsettling objects

found buried inside the house

suggest a dark ritual
was once practiced here?

Father Maginot performed
several sessions to banish

what he still believes
was a demonic presence.

And for good measure,
the most recent property owner

tore the house down
to its foundation.

But were the chilling events
in the house really the work

of the Devil's minions?

It can be difficult for us
to try to tell the difference

between a haunted house
and a possessed house.

Often, this is a matter
of declaration,

and a few of the people
that were declaring houses

to be possessed
in the '70s and '80s

were Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The Snedeker house
is one such declaration.

In 1986,
the Snedeker family moved

into a spacious home
in Southington, Connecticut.

They quickly discovered
that the house

was once a funeral home.

We get manifestations of blood,

of deathly stenches like rotting
meat and things like that,

and even the claim
that members of the family

were assaulted
by an invisible force.

So, Ed and Lorraine Warren said

that the house was being
attacked by demons.

I think that,
in as much as demons

are forces of evil,

we tend to imagine that
they are drawn to places

that we consider
evil or corrupt.

Is there a necessary connection
between the two?

Not necessarily, but I think
that the Ammons' narrative

is a strong reminder for us that

demons are very alive and well

in the contemporary
United States.

[Laycock] Demons are fallen
angels who have been cast out

of Heaven and sent into Hell,
and yet,

for reasons that
we don't fully understand,

God has allowed demons
some limited ability

to roam the Earth
and interact with humans.

And most theologians have said,

if the demons were allowed
to do whatever they want,

every human being on Earth
would already be dead.

So, God has limited
their power substantially,

but they still have some ability
to interact with the world.

I know there's a lot
of skeptics, and mainly,

if it has never happened to you,
it's easy to be a skeptic.

And when it does happen to you,
it's very real.

So, you are pretty desperate
and you want to get rid of it.

It's terrifying to think that
where we should feel safe

and sound could become home
to a living nightmare.

But there are other places
where some believe the minions

of Satan's army
are more commonly confronted,

like on the battlefield,

where the expression
"war is hell"

is given a whole new meaning.

[Shatner reads on-screen text]

British and German troops clash

in one of the first major
battles of World War I.

This bloody conflict
not only results

in 6,600 people
lying dead in its wake,

but also gives rise
to nightmarish tales

of a demonic creature

terrorizing the battlefield.

The Battle of Mons was literally
hand-to-hand fighting.

Machine guns, bayonets, cavalry
charges, and trench warfare.

But the rumors were
something had happened.

Something strange.

And after the end
of the First World War,

there was a story published
in a newspaper in Oklahoma

that there'd been this rumor
that was going around

the trenches
about a demonic hound

that had been seen and heard
in no-man's-land.

Stories were soon
circulating about

a kind of, um,
supernaturally large,

dark hound

that was stalking the trenches,

preying on soldiers.

There were tales of bodies
of soldiers being mutilated,

ripped apart in very mysterious
circumstances.

And it became known
as the Hound of Mons.

[Shatner] Doglike
servants of Satan

similar to the Hound of Mons

can be found in many folkloric
tales throughout Europe.

But they are far
from the only foul creatures

reported on
an earthly battlefield.

During the Vietnam War,

it is said there was
something evil

hiding in the darkness
of the jungle.

In Vietnam,
the U.S. Airborne troops

were issued
with night vision goggles,

and these allowed troops
to literally see in the dark.

And there were stories
that emerged in later years

about them seeing
all kinds of weird figures

that were flying towards
their helicopters or

winged demon-like creatures.

And they reported it
to, um, their superiors

who just thought, "Have you
been on drugs or something?"

You know. Wh-What are you
talking about?

[Shatner] Are these alleged
demons simply misidentified

animals or hallucinations?

Or are they proof
of Satan's presence on Earth?

While there's no hard evidence

for these unnerving legends,
you have to wonder,

if Satan has been
mustering an army,

what purpose might they serve

on the battlefields of man?

[McMahon] Throughout history,

were these hellish sentinels

attracted to
the bloodshed of battle?

And is it that, during wartime,

demonic forces kind of hone in

on what human beings
are doing to each other?

That they're attracted
by the bloodshed, by the horror

that we're inflicting
on each other.

I think about
the Christian theologian

Tertullian
in the second century,

who said that the reason demons
like pagan sacrifices

is because their food
is smoke and blood.

Well, in the 20th century,
there aren't a lot

of pagan sacrifices going on.

So, if you're a demon
and you're hungry

for a lot of smoke and blood,

where else could you possibly go
but onto the battlefield?

[Shatner] The Bosnian War.

From 1992 to 1995,

this violent conflict
in Bosnia and Herzegovina

results in over 100,000 deaths

and sends 2.2 million
local people fleeing

from their homes.

And near the end of the war,

investigative journalist
Randall Sullivan

witnesses something
that he will never forget.

Officially,
I was a correspondent

for Rolling Stone magazine
who was there to cover the war,

but also, I was
really interested in

seeing what was happening
in this village

in western Herzegovina

called Medjugorje, where
apparitions of the Virgin Mary

had started happening in 1981.

And I was interested
in the claimed miracles.

But a lot of
the local people all said

this place attracts evil, too.

After about nine weeks

being based in Medjugorje,
I was getting ready to leave.

It just happened
to coincide with

this event that happened every
year called the Youth Festival.

This year, the climax of the war

happened at the same time the
Youth Festival was scheduled.

This massive wave of
religious tourism had poured in.

One priest there
was going through the crowd

swinging this monstrance, which
contains a consecrated host.

And as he would pass
through the crowd,

I'd hear all of these
strange noises erupt. I mean,

these grunts
and squeals and curses.

And I started hearing this young
woman who started coughing,

and it sounded like she was
trying to bring up a lung.

And the next thing I know,
she's surrounded by these people

praying over her, and they're
praying an exorcism prayer.

She just suddenly raises herself
into this position

that did not look possible.

She literally had
all her weight on her heels

and the crown of her head,
and then,

I see this foam
start to come out of her mouth.

And she was making these sounds
in this deep, guttural voice

that didn't seem like
it could come out of that body.

Then, all of a sudden,
there was this giant exhalation.

[exhales forcefully]

And the smell was like

you distilled rotted flesh.

I mean, I gagged. I was-

But I was just,
I was so stunned.

Then, all of a sudden,
she relaxed and she was okay.

I played it over and over
and over, and

I eventually started to think-

believe that this- I was seeing
an actual possession

and an actual exorcism.

But everyone was acting
as if this is familiar.

And this was in a country
among people who had experienced

the greatest horrors
I've ever witnessed.

The people who lived
through it understand that

this is a war between the forces

of light and the forces
of darkness.

This is good versus evil.
This is God versus the Devil.

And I know it was real.

Do the horrors of war
somehow conjure

Satan's forces
and bring them to Earth?

For those who claim to have
witnessed it firsthand,

it remains
a nightmarish reality.

But just how
do these evil entities

get here in the first place?

Well, some believe
there are locations

on our planet that act

as portals to Hell.

[Shatner reads on-screen text]

These remote highlands
have long been known for

their massive sandstone
formations and sunken canyons.

But rising above miles of forest
is an eerie stone fortress

steeped in folklore
and legend named

Houska Castle.

Houska Castle
is a fascinating place,

so mysterious.

It's a 13th-century castle

that is on top of a cliff

in what's now known
as the Czech Republic.

And it's really
interesting because

we don't really know
why it was built.

[Laycock] There is always
some strategic purpose

to building a castle, whether
that's defending a border,

guarding some important assets,

putting them on a trade route
where you can charge tolls.

Houska Castle does not fit
any of these criteria.

There is no water supply
where this castle is.

And it takes a lot of time
and effort to build a castle

in the 13th century,

so what is it doing here?

[Shatner] There are few
surviving records

of Houska Castle's
construction, so

its true purpose has become
a matter of speculation.

But there are many
unnerving local legends,

and they all center around

a strange hole
in the middle of its courtyard.

[Clarke] Houska Castle
is built directly above

a chasm in the limestone rocks,

and the walls are sort of
facing into that chasm.

And it's interesting because
most castles were built to keep

people out, the enemy at
the gates, whereas this castle

seems to have
a completely different function.

This was built
to keep something in.

[Houlbrook] There are tales
about how,

before the castle was built,
there was this great big pit,

this bottomless pit

and local villagers
tried to fill it up.

They would drop rocks down it,
and they would never hear them

reach the bottom.

There are lots
and lots of stories.

They would take prisoners
who were condemned,

and they would say that
they would be pardoned

of their crimes
if they consented

to be lowered down
into the pit by a rope,

and then to come back up
and tell them

exactly what they'd seen.

And apparently,
the first man to do this

only lasted a couple of seconds
before he started screaming

to please be brought back up.

And when he came up,
only seconds later,

the only details
they could get out of him

were that there were
claws reaching

for him in the darkness,

um, and any kind of subsequent
prisoners who were lowered

came back absolutely insane.

[Picknett] Over the years,
locals have claimed

to witness strange
half-human, half-winged

creatures flying out
of this castle.

Strange characters roaming
the corridors of the castle.

And it's claimed that,
under the castle,

there is a portal to Hell.

[Shatner] Was Houska Castle
constructed to conceal

an actual portal to Hell?

While the legend endures,
there is no proof.

But the notion that
underground chasms

were connected
to a vast underworld

was once widespread
throughout the world.

[Laycock] In Greek
and Roman mythology,

we have stories
of heroes like Odysseus

and Orpheus and Aeneas

who have to go on quests
into the underworld.

And when they do,
they go to real places

in the Mediterranean.

And there's usually
some ritual that the hero

has to perform
to open up the gateway.

The idea was there are places

in the world that connect
directly into the underworld.

And you can go there and
you can access the underworld.

[Clarke] In medieval times,
people believed underground,

deep in caverns and caves,
that's where you would find

the Devil or Satan's army
and his demons.

Interestingly, a chapel
was built in Houska Castle

dedicated to Saint Michael.

That's very, very interesting
because Saint Michael

is the saint
that destroys demons,

that takes on Satan
on behalf of God.

He's the chief archangel.

So, I think the fact
that the chapel within

Houska Castle is dedicated
to Saint Michael

does suggest that there was
some kind of ancient belief

that that hole in the ground
was a gateway to Hell.

[Shatner] Does the presence of
Saint Michael's chapel suggest

that Houska Castle's
true purpose

was to prevent demons
from entering our world?

It's certainly intriguing.

Whatever the case,
many have wondered

whether the castle's sinister,
supernatural reputation

lured another force

that committed unspeakable evil

during World War II.

[Paul Springer] During
World War II, Nazi forces

seized control over what was
then called Czechoslovakia,

and they actually
occupied Houska Castle.

There were a lot of
individuals within the Nazi

high command
that were absolutely obsessed

with the supernatural
and occult forces.

In particular, Heinrich Himmler,

who was effectively
Hitler's greatest bureaucrat,

thought that it might
be possible to tap

into supernatural sources

to create super soldiers
on behalf of the German Reich.

But in terms of any scientific
investigation of the pit

beneath the castle,

we don't really know
what they might've found.

[McMahon] During the time that
the Nazis were in Houska Castle,

local people reported seeing

flickering lights at windows

and screams and all kinds
of strange activity going on.

To this day, nobody really knows

what the Nazis were
searching for at Houska Castle,

what they may have found,

what connections they may
have made to satanic forces.

[Laycock] Could there
actually be a portal to Hell

underneath the chapel?

The only way to know for sure
would be to crack open

the floor of the chapel.

But that might not be worth
finding out the answer.

The possibility that a portal
to Hell may have been the source

for evildoings at Houska Castle
is a disturbing thought.

But perhaps
even more disconcerting

is the legend
of an extraordinary feat

of human accomplishment
that some say

was the result of a deal

with the Devil.

[Shatner] Satan is believed
to be the great deceiver,

a diabolical con artist
said to offer power,

wealth, and forbidden knowledge.

But according to both
scripture and legend,

the tempting bargains
made by Satan come

at a terrible cost.

[Laycock] In the
Christian tradition,

the goal for demons
is to try to get us

to trade away something we have
that's very precious

for the wonders of this world.

We see this very clearly
in the gospels,

where Satan
makes Jesus an offer.

He shows him a whole world
and says,

"All of this can be yours

if only you will bow down
and worship me."

People may have heard
of the phrase "Faustian pact."

That's from Doctor Faustus.

It's a very famous
medieval story

of a German scientist

who meets the Devil
in the form of Mephistopheles,

and Dr. Faustus basically makes
a contract in his own blood

that he will have access
to knowledge

that ordinary human beings
don't have for 24 years,

and at the end of that time,

he will then forfeit
his soul to the Devil.

[Shatner] It is said that
even men of the cloth

have been seduced by the Devil.

In the 17th century,
a French priest named

Urbain Grandier

was put on trial
after allegedly signing

a satanic contract
inked in blood.

In fact, he was found guilty
and burned at the stake.

[screaming]

And it's believed
that dark covenants such as this

have been made by the most
powerful servants of God.

There is a story of a pope

in the 11th century,
Pope Sylvester II,

and people said this pope

was actually in league with
a female demon called Meridiana,

and she managed to get him
elected pope.

And as pope,

he also built a mechanical head,
which was demonically possessed,

and it used to give him
instructions

on what to do.

[Shatner] Are pacts with Satan
and his underlings nothing more

than superstitious tales?

Perhaps the answer lies with
a mysterious 13th-century book

from Bohemia- what's
now the Czech Republic.

It's the largest surviving
medieval manuscript

in the world, the Codex Gigas.

The Codex Gigas is 600 pages

of biblical text,

so you have both the Old
and the New Testament included.

You've got some
works of history,

you've got medical texts,
and you've got an encyclopedia.

So, before the printing press,

this would've been
a huge amount of work.

The legend says that
it was a Benedictine monk

named Herman the Recluse

who was responsible
for this beautiful manuscript.

He is said
to have broken his vows

and was threatened with being
sealed up inside a wall alive.

So, to get out
of this punishment,

he promised
to create a manuscript

that would bring honor
and glory to the monastery.

The best manuscript
ever produced.

[Laycock] Historians think
to simply write the text alone

would take 20 years
of constant writing,

and that's just for the text.

That doesn't include
all of the illustrations,

because this is the largest
illustrated manuscript

that's ever been created.

[Shatner] While scholars
believe the Codex Gigas

would've taken decades
to produce,

according to the legend,

Herman the Recluse

had to complete this giant
manuscript in a single night

to save himself
from a torturous death.

[owl hooting]

That sounds utterly ridiculous,
but there are some anomalies

which make you wonder.

For a start, modern experts
have analyzed the handwriting,

and throughout this book,
which would've taken normally

decades to write,

the writing
does not change at all.

Now, as we get older,
our handwriting changes.

This did not change.
It was the same quality,

the same pressure
on the paper, everything.

It was written by Herman
in very quick order

because the writing
didn't change.

[McMahon] Herman the Recluse
was about to be punished

for breaking his vows.

The punishment was that
he was going to be

bricked up alive into the walls

of his own monastery
and forgotten about,

so he would die of starvation
behind the walls.

Now, he was desperate
and terrified.

So, he called upon
the assistance of a demon

to help him.

He sold his soul

in order to create
this bible in a day.

[Shatner] Did Herman
the Recluse

sell his soul
to save his own life?

Well, according to some,

proof of his unholy bargain
can be found

in an unmistakable image
buried within the pages

So, as well as the Codex Gigas,

the name for this manuscript
is the Devil's Bible.

On one of the pages
of the manuscript

is a very, very
interesting picture of Satan

who's kind of staring out
of the page at the viewer.

A kind of leering face.

It's quite a disturbing image.

[Laycock] The Devil
is shown smiling

and holding out his claws,

and some people think
that that illustration

is essentially an autograph.

That the real person who wrote
this book was the Devil

in exchange
for this monk's soul.

[Shatner] But accusations
of deals with the Devil

don't stop
with members of the clergy.

In fact, they've been leveled
at the most famous army

of holy warriors in history.

[Shatner reads on-screen text]

An organization known
as the Satanic Temple

unveils a nine-foot
bronze statue

of a demonic effigy outside
the state capitol building.

The display inspires
heated protest

among Christian activists
and politicians.

This devilish creature,

whose name was first uttered
in the year 1098,

is known as Baphomet.

To most people, Baphomet
is pure and simply a demon.

It looks terrifying.

The image that we have today
is of a half-man, half-goat

with various occult symbols
scattered around,

and it certainly looks
terrifyingly occult,

and that's indeed how
most people see Baphomet,

as being the epitome
of evil, of satanic evil.

[Shatner] The presence
of this unsettling statue

was met with outrage,

but during the Middle Ages,

the fear of Baphomet
became legendary.

This unholy being was the focus
of rumors and accusations

against the warriors sworn to
protect Christianity itself...

...the Knights Templar.

The Knights Templar
were an order of knights

whose job was to guard
Christian pilgrims

on the way to Jerusalem.

Now, it turned out, a lot
of these pilgrims had money,

and they wanted
to put it somewhere safe,

so the Templars became bankers.

And after about
100 years of this,

the Templar Order
became quite wealthy.

King Philip IV of France

borrowed heavily
from the Templars.

And rather than
paying that money back,

he listened to rumors
that the Templars

had actually begun
to perform demonic rituals,

worshipping an idol
called Baphomet.

And so, on Friday the 13th,

King Philip had all the Templars
in France arrested.

They were tortured
until they confessed.

And they said,
"Yes, we performed rituals,

and we committed sins
in the name of Baphomet."

And then,
they were burned at the stake.

Was any of this true
or was this simply

brought about through torture
and perhaps jealousy

of the Templars' wealth?

We'll probably
never know with certainty.

[Shatner] While
the demonic claims

against the Knights Templar
are dubious at best,

even today,
there are those who believe

the Devil's treachery could very
well corrupt an entire army.

And millions of people
around the world are convinced

that many of the horrors
in human history

are part of a coordinated strike

by the legions of Hell.

It is not the case
that the Devil

made his rebellion in the past.

He's making his rebellion now.

You know, the old phrase
that misery loves company.

Nowhere is that more true

than in the battle
between good and darkness,

insofar as the Devil
is concerned.

It's important we understand
that evil exists,

that it's all around us.

It's tempting us, swaying us,

working against us constantly.

If people understood
they had a common enemy,

one who's against us all,

they would be far less
concerned about their

contentions with each other.

So what do you think?

Is there a league
of evil entities influencing

our thoughts and actions
in an attempt to

possess our very souls?

Well, the only thing
we can say for sure

is that stories of devilish
deeds and destruction

have been reported
throughout history

and continue to this day.

Could Satan's army really exist?

Or is it merely a product
of our fears and imagination?

It's an unsettling question
that may forever remain...

unexplained.
