Over a century ago, miners
began raiding these beaches,

finding easy fortune.

But over time, the Sandy
coast was mostly plucked clean.

So prospectors set their
sights on the open water.

Whoo-hoo!

For decades, they've
been digging for gold

from excavator dredges.

Coming in.

We're diving for it from suction dredges.

It's all gold in the bottom.

Pulling up material from
ocean depths up to 30 feet.

But gold in these shallower grounds

has been worked so thoroughly,
it's becoming harder to find.

So now, to survive,
the fleet is going deeper

than ever before.

It's the first day of summer. This is it.

Look at the weather out

It just gives me the itch.

It's late spring, the start of
the summer mining season,

and winter's gold count
champ is eager to pick up

where he left off.

As we speak, my guys are already

taking the dredge out there.

I've been working on this

a nome legend is hunting for
gold deeper than ever before.

But he's taking a very different path

than the rest of the fleet.

Mining season's taking
off. The boat's in the water.

But my boats aren't in the water.

My boats are gonna sit for a little bit

until I get this inland
mine up and running.

Shawn pomrenke has moved inland,

pulling out all the stops and unleashing

a massive operation as he hunts for

what could be the biggest
fortune in the history of nome.

There's been more
inland mining than offshore,

but there's the potential to
make a few million dollars.

It's go time.

Mr. Gold's gonna get some gold.

We're going to need a bigger scale.

And for years, he's been
a mining ground breaker.

I put an excavator on a barge.

This thing is awesome.

This past winter, at the
arctic gold inland mine...

Nice chunkers in there.

He uncovered a pay streak
that he believes dates back

to the original nome gold rush.

We hit pay dirt.

So now, Shawn's left
the security of the gold

on Tom codd and gambled everything

he has on the chance to
land the score of a lifetime.

The stakes are high.

I've had my whole life savings
wrapped up into this inland mine,

and I've spent it all right now.

I believe there's at least
54,000 ounces hiding here.

That's at least 130,
maybe 140 million in gold.

But to get the rights
to mine this 9,000 acres

and pay for the labor and equipment,

I had to spend every penny I had.

Since ice mining, we've
been hauling pay dirt out.

We're into the third week.

We're sitting at about 600
ounces. I need to be at 750.

We're rolling a little bit shy.

The first cut we made was 250 feet wide

by about 700 feet long.

And we're going down over 60 feet,

so it takes weeks just to
get down to the pay dirt.

For me to make a profit
and keep this thing going,

I need to make at least
250 ounces a week,

4,000 ounces for the season.

If I fall behind that
pace, I'll go into the red.

I won't be able to afford to run
this mine, and I'll lose everything.

So it's going to be a
pressure cooker all summer.

right ahead of us.

The beach was real
thick coming through here.

I'm trying to follow the old beach line.

Where the water rushing out of
the mountains deposited all the gold.

This trail is where the beach line was

a million years ago,
and it's the pay streak

the old-timers tapped into.

You think that line's
going this way or like this?

The main shafts ran like this.

The old-timers, they drive...

Dig straight down and then
went out in every direction

they found gold and
took it and brought it up.

Through this whole process,
we've been finding picks,

shovels, timbers.

So they just took the real high grade.

There was a layer that
was super rich, like this thick.

And that's what they went after.

They didn't care about it.

They didn't have the big wash plant,

and they shoveled and picked and axed,

so they focused on that
area where it was just loaded.

They left a lot of gold.

They just took the real hot stuff and...

Well, hopefully we find a big
area where they just missed it all.

I guarantee you, you will.

Here's the issue with the whole plan.

We found the beach line
where the old timers were.

That was the first step.

So we dug a huge cut to tap into it,

but now we have to follow the pay.

Which way does it go?

I think this is all going to pay really well.

I know we definitely are
going to take another slice,

big slice that way.

I got the drill log, the handwritten logs.

Yeah.

The way I found this spot is
through research and drill logs.

That tells you where there might be gold,

but there's absolutely no guarantee.

Now I have to decide
where to make the next cut.

Does the beach line go straight east,

or does it go a little northeast?

It's going to cost me a fortune to find out,

and if I'm wrong, it could
cost me my business.

it says there's gold,

and I've been there and
done that and went bankrupt.

make too big of mistakes

that you can't recover from.

been running a dredge of his own.

And this summer, he's got a plan

to join gold mining's elite.

Shawn's been letting
me work tomcod for years,

and I've researched a
stretch on the outside of it

that's going to be loaded with gold.

But it's up to 60 foot deep,
deeper than I can dive with

my current dredge.

So now, this summer,
I'm aiming for 300 ounces

so I can buy a dredge that
can handle those depths

and keep the gold pouring in.

I've got a, what would you call that?

I suppose we're fiances.

But yeah, I've got an old
lady and three kids at home.

I just had a baby boy about a month ago.

They're the light of my
life. It's why I do what I do.

It's what justifies the risks that we take.

The responsibility on my

70 to 75 feet deep this summer.

claim I'm working this year.

I'm trying to keep
everything extremely secret.

So I'm calling everything
claim x this year.

As soon as I give up my secrets,

everybody around is
going to try to swarm me.

I have an in on this claim
that I can go deeper than

anybody's ever worked on
the fleet, like 70 feet deep.

The deeper you go, the
more untouched the gold is.

So this could be the
richest spot in nome.

This is the first time in my entire life

I've actually seen a path
to become a millionaire.

You can't really dive as
a person at 70 feet deep.

And my mistress will only go 19 feet.

But I've got a way to reach those depths.

I spent all the money I made
during ice mining to upgrade

my crawler so we can
get to this new ground.

But we still have to outfit the all
in so we can launch the crawler.

While that's happening, I can still
have the mistress making us gold.

I've really gone overboard this year

restoring the mistress barge.

We replaced 20% of the
hull with brand-new steel.

I made the sluice box three feet wider,

which is about 65% wider,
so I'll be able to handle

65% more material at once
going through that sluice box.

Right now, I'm aiming higher
than I've ever been before.

500 ounces this season
should make me a millionaire,

but I'm putting everything
I have in this season,

and so is my investor, Kevin.

This is a nice, big expanse of flat ice.

And this past winter, with

landlord of the Bering sea.

That's a fine number.
That's pretty damn good.

And scored enough gold to
buy an advanced dive system

that could change his operation forever.

Gold divers usually stay
shallower than 33 feet

and limit their dives to four to six hours.

At deeper depths, nitrogen
builds to dangerous levels

inside the body, capping
dives to three hours or less.

But Vernon's new nitrox dive system

blows those limitations out of the water,

pumping increased oxygen
to offset the elevated nitrogen.

They got good air.

Which means Vernon's
divers will be able to double,

even triple their time at deep levels.

This new nitrox dive system
is going to revolutionize

the way I get gold.

56 is loaded, but the really good

untouched stuff is too deep to reach

until now.

But I'm going to need
a crew to get it done,

lead diver from the winter.

After last winter, I had to

be exceptionally profitable

because I need to pay
off my dredge, the synergy.

It's the largest suction dredge in nome,

and it has the biggest nozzle as well.

If I don't get the money
together to pay it off this summer,

I'll lose it.

I still owe $175,000 on it.

But now I have a family,
and you have to make

a certain amount of money
to pay for the expenses

that you have when you have a
family, and I'm dealing with that.

My home here in nome, it worked great

- for a 24-year-old single guy.
- It was perfect.

But my wife and child want
running water and electricity.

I try to clean up a lot of the
junk that I've accumulated,

because I feel like
I'm living in a junkyard.

- We got a refrigerator.
- Now they want a washer and dryer.

And it costs a lot of money
to make those things happen.

I need to get enough gold to
keep my mining career alive,

and I need some extra profit
to take care of my family as well.

So I have a plan to amp up production.

We added 14 feet of hose,
and now we have, like, nearly 50.

We're going to get out there and start
hitting up some of this deeper water.

One of the big changes for this summer

is we're going deeper,
deeper than ever before.

intelligence about where to go

14, and the previous owner

of this boat spent like
four years on lease 14.

And he dredged basically
all this really hot gold

and followed it into
water that was as deep

as he was able to mine it because
he couldn't reach the bottom anymore.

So we have all the coordinates
of everywhere he mined.

Basically, we already have
a treasure map to where

all this hot gold is going out to, like,

the 38 to 45-foot depth.

I've assembled a great team.

The problem is the first
clean out of this week

was 25 ounces light.

So we need a big one
today to make up for it.

We won't know till they
get it all cleaned up,

but they're getting the box back together.

I'm going to go start
pushing some material.

prepping for the next cut.

That wash plant has
to be fed at all times.

And we're only a few weeks away

from being out of material to run.

So that new cut needs to be open now.

my gut's telling me

The second job is more technical,

so I'm gonna oversee it.

This loose box here, it's
gonna catch a lot of gold.

It's six feet wide by 18 feet long.

Since we got a bigger badass
crawler, we can work more material.

Since we can work more material,

we're gonna need a bigger sluice box.

To support this insanely heavy sluice box,

we're installing two beams called
stanchions on the side of the boat.

The sluice box will hang from those

so we can lower it up
and down and adjust it

to the proper angle to make sure
we get the right amount of gold.

Okay, I'm ready to rock and roll.

We're going to take these stanchions,

flip them into position,
and get them tacked,

and then hard weld them.

I know that sounds super simple,

but it's going to be kind of a
bitch, because those aren't light.

We have to have them perfect,
or this won't work out for me.
