THREE DAYS BEFORE THE FUNERAL

We have to start this news bulletin
with the discovery of the corpses

of three youngsters
close to the Tous' dam, in Valencia.

An agricultural laborer, a beekeeper,

saw this evening the arm
of a half-buried corpse.

From that moment,
this macabre discovery started.

It's three youngsters, there's no doubt,
but we don't know

if it's Míriam, Antonia and Desirée.

We came here with the beekeeper,
he brought us directly to the site,

the beekeeper had already seen

where they were and he led us directly
to the pit with the bodies.

It was specifically a watch
that stuck out of the ground.

the bones from the forearm sticking out.

they found a hand with a watch.

Considering two people had seen the hand

and they both knew how to get to the site,

the team's members,
accompanied by one of the beekeepers,

went to La Romana through a path
of difficult access...

During that time,
everyone of that age did the same.

We hitchhiked to get to the nightclub
in La Alcudia.

Since that day, no more.

We stopped doing hitchhiking.
Not only me and my friends, but everybody.

What I wonder is,
how did they bring this coffin?

Because it doesn't fit here.

It arrived with the funerary car.

There was a moment where
the car couldn't continue, it was too low.

So, they brought it
with the Civil Guard car.

I was the first to arrive at the site
once the corpses were already out.

They ordered me to look around

and mark the spots for the police cordon.

I arrived at night, it was very dark,
and my flashlight didn't illuminate much.

I had 20-something years
at the time and I recall it well.

Maybe because I was young back then

and I've always carried it with me,
cordoning off the scene.

The wind, the three corpses on the ground.

The visual inspection

We saw the first paper piece
and we started looking.

We found a number that seemed
to be from the social security.

So, we looked inside the bramble,
opening it, stepping on it.

And we continued finding more papers.
but it was difficult to read them.

The papers were
in the vicinity of the pit.

They were spread out and under bushes.

We had to cut the bushes of the area.

There was a birth date: 7/25/1966.

We deduced it was someone

who had been treated
in La Fé Hospital, in Valencia,

for a venereal disease.

It was one the clues
that had to be followed.

PATIENT'S INFORMATION

The telephone rang. They wanted to know
if Enrique Anglés had a criminal record.

Yes. I didn't even have
to look at the file.

We knew him well.

"The bodies of the Alcàsser girls

We went to Catarroja to request
a search warrant.

When we got it,
there was more backup there.

-The captain was there.
-They'd opened the door on their own.

Everything happened very fast.

And when I arrived there,
I saw a guy with a dog.

He wasn't blond, but he had blond streaks.

I thought he was just a neighbor.

He entered the flat
and when he notices it,

he can't go back.

He stays there with the others
in the living room.

They asked him if he had any alias.

And he said, "Yes, Miguel the Blond."

He asks for Enrique and he gets arrested.

Enrique says, "Yes, it's me."
He's arrested.

I didn't understand anything.

I hadn't thought for a moment
they were coming for Enrique.

Enrique isn't violent, he's a good boy,
but he has mental problems.

We did a search, it wasn't very thorough,

because we didn't know
what we were looking for.

We went there to look for Enrique.
Because Enrique's name

was the one on the form.

They went to my mother's room,
to the kitchen, they continue the search,

and when they're searching my room,
the phone rings.

They told me not to pick up the phone.

It was a landline phone
with answering machine, it was mine.

It didn't belong to the house
or my family.

It's a telephone I bought for myself,
to be in contact with people.

And the answering machine came on.

Kelly, it's me, Rubén.

When you come, tell the Blond

to go to where
the motorcycle's lever and disc are.

and the Kellogg's and milk
that are on top of the table.

The girls had disappeared,
according to a witness in Alcàsser,

in a small white car.

They were four boys.

They opened the door. The girls got into
the backseat of the car.

So, I went to the captain
and told him what happened.

And he said, "Let's take all of them
to Patraix to interrogate them."

Ricart shows up once we're already
inside of the Anglés family's house.

We took all the occupants of the house
to the station in Patraix.

In the station, we identify them to see
who they are and what they were doing

in the house.

We were at the Civil Guard station
for many hours.

They asked a lot of questions.
I didn't understand anything.

They told me they found the girls.

And close to the site, they found

social security documents
or something like that,

where my brother's name appears.

"You're all arrested
and we were looking for Enrique

for the girls' murder."

That's when

I understood what was going on.
I had no idea.

They were harsh with him
for several hours.

But he didn't have anything to do with it.

CIVIL GUARD

Enrique Anglés, when
they interrogated him here at first,

he said he killed the girls.

INFORMATION GROUP CAPTAIN

Because he was in the nightclub
and they didn't want to dance with him.

So, we said, "We have to release him,
or we'll end up like him."

Half mad and wasting our time.

So, when Enrique Anglés was interrogated
the first time, he pleads guilty.

is released by the investigating judge.

No, I'm schizophrenic.

I couldn't understand it.

I knew it couldn't be Enrique.

So, I said, "Look, I have a brother

who's a jail fugitive,
who's impersonating him.

is my other brother, because this one
doesn't even leave the house."

After what I said, they realized

it wasn't him and they released Enrique.

I don't know, but if it was him,

then he has done an atrocity.

that Antonio escaped through the window.

He was a wanted man because he hadn't
come back to jail after a prison leave.

the premises, so he wouldn't get caught.

He was desperate, he wanted to escape.

I knew he hadn't gone back
after the prison leave,

so I thought that was the reason

or something related to drugs.

He told me, "I am going
to climb down this window.

He went through one roof to the other,
it might be approximately 500 meters,

until he reached the next street.

The police would've needed
to surround a whole block.

So, he climbed down two floors,

then he swayed towards the right side

to jump onto the roof of the second floor.

When I saw him on the roof,
I grabbed the sheets.

I untied the knots,

and that's when Enrique opened the door
to the police.

What I can affirm, from what my partners
who were there told me, was that

Antonio Anglés wasn't in the house.

And Antonio Anglés didn't jump
from the window.

He didn't.

Obviously, you see the height

and you think, "He can't jump."

He didn't jump. He climbed down,
he swayed and...

I don't know. I was there and I saw it.

He went out through here.

He climbed down and he jumped there.
Look, there.

He jumped there.

Their mother, Neusa, was a woman

that worked without rest

to provide for that extremely odd family.

She worked in a chicken slaughterhouse.

Her son Antonio beat her and bullied her.

However, she ended up mortgaging
everything she could

to give money to her son
so he could run away.

Antonio didn't respect anyone.

He wasn't respectful with anyone.

He didn't care

if it was my mother, I, whoever.

If he became aggressive
and we ignored him,

and we were both near him,

he would hit us, he would grab our heads

and crash them like this.
We would get a bump.

That's one way he had of beating us up.

No, I don't think
he could feel empathy for people.

He was very cold.

We were all afraid of him.

Antonio Anglés, according to his family,

the bodies were found

and Enrique and Miguel Ricart
were arrested.

His mother says he stole
two million pesetas.

He took it from the bottle in front of me.

And he put it in his jacket.

Meanwhile, the police is searching for
Antonio Anglés throughout the province.

It's possible that he's armed and carries
three false identity documents.

Antonio Anglés gets out of Valencia,
reaches Lisbon and escapes in a freighter.

The unprecedented police force
deployed to capture him

becomes an object of controversy
for years.

Today, Antonio Anglés is still one of
the most-wanted fugitives

by the international justice system.

At the beginning,
the alleged perpetrator was Ricart.

He starts saying he doesn't know anything

about the questions he's being asked.
He says, "No.

That night I was eating dinner
with some friends and my girlfriend."

Then the girlfriend denies that.

Later, he says he was in jail.

He said that it couldn't be him
because he was in prison.

He repeated that constantly.

"I was in prison. I was in prison."

We went to the prison to check the files.

Miguel Ricart was on prison leave
the days of the crime.

The day of the murders of the three girls.

So, his alibi didn't make sense.

RICART LIED IN HIS FIRST INTERROGATION

AND SAID HE WAS IN PRISON
THE DAY OF THE CRIME

We guided the conversation
with Miguel Ricart

in an indirect way

and we ended up talking about the girls.

I was sitting and behind me
there was a poster

with the picture of the girls.

I noticed him looking at it constantly,
in a way that seemed morbid to me.

And automatically he, who wasn't stupid,
realized it wasn't in his best interest

to discuss this topic about the girls.

And from that moment,
he starts getting nervous.

The three of us, Fermín,
Sergeant Requejo and I

look at each other as if saying,
"This guy.

I think he knows more than he lets on."

That's when we decided to interrogate
him with the presence of a lawyer.

In this case, it's Miguel Ricart

who places himself at the crime scene

and names Antonio Anglés as the culprit of
the murders, so he's placed under arrest.

We knew he hung out with Antonio Anglés.

USUAL VEHICLE:

And his car fit the description
of the vehicle we were looking for.

And obviously, we weren't going to
release him until, at least,

the arrest of Antonio Anglés
or the clarification of the circumstances

that surrounded the disappearance
and murder of these girls.

Miguel was a good boy.

He lived with us.
He used to help my mother.

He was weak, he allowed himself to be
carried along and was easy to manipulate.

So, my brother Antonio
did with him whatever he wanted.

He was in the wrong place
with the wrong person.

Antonio Anglés dominated him.

He was under his total control,

because of Anglés' strong personality

and Miguel's emotional instability

and weak personality.

At some point, I asked him
if Antonio Anglés had sodomized him.

And he reacted disproportionately.

He could have just said no.

And that's when he starts to tell us

how everything happened.
Who killed and who raped.

We put him in the cell
until the next morning.

Desirée's and Toñi's three corpses.

how did the day
of the girls' second autopsy go?

I arrived there,
and I found the doors closed.

a second autopsy."

48 hours after the autopsies,

Miguel Ricart,
with public defender Joaquín Comins,

declares in front of the judge.

My first intervention was
the first judicial declaration

of Miguel Ricart on the date
January 30th, 1993.

As the hours go by,

you let your guard down
because of tiredness. "I will declare now.

MIGUEL RICART'S ATTORNEY

If I do it earlier,
I will finish earlier."

And once you start talking, you don't
stop. They ask you and you answer.

The suspects, when...

When they see the shadow
of a possible imputation, they start...

They start saying anything
and looking for witnesses

that would say they weren't there.

But everything he said,

alibis, and all the claims he was making,

were disproved,

so he started declaring

that he was only
Antonio Anglés' errand boy.

They pick up the girls before
they get to Coolor

and they take them through other paths.

When the girls realize
they've been deprived of their liberty,

Anglés hits them and...

He tells them they're going to stop
in a factory,

and he takes one of the girls.

Ricart hears this girl screaming.

Then he comes back and takes another one.

And he does the same,
so only one's left at the car.

And he tries
to have sexual intercourse with her
