I've ever seen.

like one of those days,

I can just feel it.
I am not gonna lie.

It is giving me big-time
tornado vibes.

We are here for it.

We don't wanna see it do
damage, but it'd be cool to see

a tornado today.

I've been chasing storms
for over 16 years now.

I travel well over 100,000 miles
a year chasing all sorts

of extreme weather,

keeping the public
aware and safe.

[radio beeps]

[Brandon ] No, buddy, I didn't
see any tornadoes last night.

Hey, have you made sure
to tell Mama

how beautiful
she looks today?

I wish I could be over there,
but I gotta work.

[Connor] We got two days.

We're gonna absolutely grind
out these chases here.

I think we're gonna get
a beast of a supercell.

Definitely have
tornado potential.

I've been chasing full-time
for about three years now.

I would definitely say I'm kind
of a Maverick of storm chasing.

I like to push the limits.

Our target storm is going to be
a little bit further south,

where we have an outflow
boundary laid in place from

the storms that moved through
the area this morning.

That morning, a huge storm
left what we call

an outflow boundary.

To the north of the boundary,
stable cold air.

To the south of the boundary,
you have warm air, and so where

they meet, you get back surface
winds and that enhances

low-level spin for storms
to take advantage of.

So, the next couple of hours,
there's gonna be basically

a line of storms rolling across
this area.

We also could see
a few tornadoes.

There's some spin
in the air today,

so be on high alert for that.

[Brandon ]
The party's already starting
to get started, so we're gonna

meet up over at the truck
stop real quick and see Connor.

Looks like we're barely gonna
have time for food

when this storm
is starting to go.

- Hello.
- [server] Hello.

[Brandon] Yeah.

Yeah, half the time people
think I'm a cop,

and then they look at
the damage and they're like,

"I don't think so."
- [server speaks]

We'll see if we get anything
around here today.

Those early storms came
through, and they put out

a boundary, and if a storm
initiates on that boundary,

it's gonna be tornado city.

- [server exclaims indistinctly]
- Yeah.

When I was like eight years
old, my dad and I were driving

home on the interstate,
and he just saw a woman on

the side of the road
broke down.

So, he just got out and offered
to help her.

She was fine.
We went on our way.

But that changed my life in
such a way that I just knew

I wanted to be like that.
I wanna help people.

by giving people a visual of

what's happening on the ground.

People react better
when you show them

a tornado visually.

They see it's real,
and they need to

respond immediately.

And, of course, feeling like
the dad of our group,

I wanna make sure other chasers
are being safe, but I also know

that we've got some younger
and newer chasers

out there today.

We got a little meet up here
in Watertown.

That's what happens
when we park.

Oh, yeah, everyone's showing up
to this place.

My personal mission is to get
the best tornado footage

possible and to get
as close as I can.

The environment is definitely
favorable for a couple

strong tornadoes, guys.

If you could get a crazy clip of
a tornado that's really unique,

I mean, you could be talking
tens of thousands of dollars,

but if I mess it up, it can be
a loss of thousands of dollars.

by your dad.

Oh, yeah, that flip is going
right on the boundary.

I see a rain shower on radar,
which is one of

the first signs of initiation.

And that's when we knew
we needed to move

and get in position.

[Brandon over radio]

Storm season is back!

[Tanner] What is up, guys?

It's your favorite white boy

Aussie Australian.

We're chasing the Minnesota
South Dakota border.

We have a few storms trying
to go right as we speak.

That day, I had my friend Joel
with me.

Joel's from Australia, and
he's one of my close friends.

And this was Joel's
first official chase.

Is Aussie scared?

No, not scared.

If I take someone on a chase,
it's a liability at the end of

the day, especially
'cause this is new for him.

But I need some help
with live streaming

and also just to help me film.

And I just hope it's gonna
be OK.

Oh, yeah, I can see the dust
coming across the field here.

- [Joel] That looks awesome, man.
- Yeah dude.

[Tanner] So, we're heading
towards the storm.

Uh, the storm starts to,
like, peter out a bit.

And so, as we get to it,
there's this big push of winds

that are just really blowing.

Bro, it's like a mini haboob.

What the heck?
Look at that.

So, a haboob is a dust storm

that's formed by
a severe thunderstorm.

All right.

You don't normally see
these giant dust storms.

They're pretty rare.

[Tanner speaks]

This is crazy!

Whoa!

Let's go, bro.

I made sure to train Joel
beforehand, like, in the car on

the way, but he didn't quite
know how to handle it.

Oh, my God, dude!

- What?

[Tanner] Get behind the car!

He's, like, trying to film.
Dust is in his eyes.

And so I'm giving
him instructions.

When you have 60 to 70 plus
mile per hour winds with grains

of dust hitting you,
you gotta be careful.

That was so intense.

all over my mouth
and eyes and stuff.

The same severe thunderstorms

could also produce tornadoes

Half of storm chasing is
literally just trying to figure

out the best position.

And if it starts
hitting anything,

just given the violent motion
at the cloud base.

I was definitely concerned
for Mike.

If he was to get impacted
by that inflow jet,

it could literally
pull him into it.

It's life-or-death
in that moment.

it's gonna be death.

There is an inherent fear,
but if you wanna get a really

good close range tornado

this instinct for as long

The inflow to that tornado was
so strong, I was gonna get

docked over, I think,
if I stood out there any longer.

behind us

just west of Watertown.

The tornado is just sending
debris all over the place.

I could see parts of roofs.

concerned for his safety.

Tornadoes are violent,
but what's killer about

tornadoes is debris.

And I see this tornado has
sheet metal.

Those pieces of debris
are like flying knives.

Watch the debris

my ground with these tornadoes

as long as I possibly can.

[Connor] Gosh, this thing needs
to lift, now.

It's heading right
for Watertown.

This thing's gotta lift.

a tornado hit a house,

you realize this is
why we do what we do.

Our job is to educate people,
and in doing so,

hope that our message got to
them, because we can't stop

a tornado from impacting homes,

but we can change the way
people respond to them.

[Tanner] Yeah, at least
their dogs are safe.

It really seemed like no one
was there, though,

which is really--
- They must have evacuated.

They must have evacuated.

Man, it's like the greatest
rush, but I just hate when it

affects people's lives.
- Hundred percent.

That was devastating.

[Tanner] For me, documentation
is so important.

If I tell you with my words,
it has a certain impact.

If I show you, though,
that makes all the difference

with people, like,
donating to help,

coming out to help clean up.

[Tanner speaks]

It's a dangerous business.
It's not for everyone.

And so who actually comes
with you is really important.

Thankfully, Joel did
really well.

Even though it was his first
chase, props for Joel, man.

I really appreciated him
on this chase.

This thing is roping out,
but it's so incredibly violent.

It's doing some weird
kink thing.

That tornado was the top ten
chase of my life.

I got great footage.

I feel like I executed
perfectly as well.

And it also
didn't hit Watertown,

which made the situation
ten times better.

No joke, that was the most
violent tornado I've ever seen.

More violent than Gary.
That thing was terrifying.

That Watertown tornado was
very, very strong.

But the next day,
you're preparing yourself

for a tornado
of a stronger nature.

[Jordan]
Good morning, everybody.

The main threat today into
the overnight hours is gonna

be significant straight-line
winds, possibly a derecho.

As this system progresses,
that means you could see winds

up to Hurricane force,
75-plus mile an hour.

I'm Jordan Hall, and I'm
a full-time storm chaser.

I've been chasing for ten years,
and I would consider myself

one of the veterans
in the field.

We do have a couple hints at
some super cellular development,

and that will bring a risk for
damaging hail and possibly

even a couple of tornadoes.

My goal on this day is to take
Sierra, my girlfriend,

and my little brother Colter out
storm chasing and hopefully get

him his first tornado.

It's something I've always
wanted to do, not only to just

show him storm chasing and what
I do for work, but also to see

if maybe he would be interested
in it in the future.

I'm Colter Hall,
I'm 14 years old,

and I'm Jordan Hall's
younger brother.

When Jordan first asked me
to go, I was, like,

excited, but also scared.

I just knew that storm chasing
was really dangerous,

and you have to be prepared
for it at all times.

The day after a great chase,

you're just waking up on
top of the world.

Feels good to be back out.

A little one-day,
one-and-done, but--

That day, it was myself,
Brandon Copic,

and Jordan Hall.
Jordan and I are good friends.

I would consider Jordan
and I to be on the same tier

in terms of our drive,
our motivation, and skill set.

Jordan's a hell of a chaser.

I'm Sierra Lindsey
and I'm a storm chaser

and also a meteorology student.

Jordan and I have been together
for about three years now.

It's always been a dream of
Jordan's to get his little

brother a tornado, so we were
gonna try really hard

to make that happen.

[Jordan] That storm's looking
really good.

I'm about to just leave
and go chase it.

I'm looking at radar and it
looks like the storm is

developing a strong updraft,
which means it was

becoming stronger.

Let's go!

[Jordan]
All right, there's our storm,
guys, right in front of us.

Keep an eye on that.

You might see
your first tornado.

We had an isolated supercell
with no other storms around.

So there's no other storms
to impede it and steal

the energy from it.

We had a really good chance of
seeing tornadoes this day.

If we go north of Dixon,
we can beat this thing.

Buckle up, Colter!

[Connor] Yesterday's tornado
was incredible.

This could be our last chase
for quite some time,

so we gotta make the most
of it.

We're getting on this sucker.
I ain't playing games.

Guys, that's not a tornado
you're seeing.

That is a lightning-induced
fire you're seeing.

That fire is going wild
right now.

As an ex-Wildland firefighter,
I can already tell that

the fire danger is very
high today.

The Gregory Fire Department's
flying up here, too.

This storm, it's already

generating a lot of wind.

And this wildfire is already
moving multiple acres

in a very short period
of time.

This is just insane!

[Connor] Oh, that lightning fire
is scary looking right now.

My gosh.

[Brandon]
This is just insane right now.

I hope everybody's OK.

[Connor] I don't know
which way it's spreading.

Funnel coming down.

Big nipple up there.

My heart was beating really
fast when Jordan said that

we were possibly gonna
see a tornado.

I was just going through
everything they told me to do

like, on how
to record the storm

so I could get good
video out of it.

[Connor] Nice tornado down.
Nice tornado down.

[Jordan] It's on the ground!
Tornado on the ground!

Tornado on the ground!

I felt like I was dreaming
a little bit.

Didn't think I would ever see
something that cool.

You should see it over

Look at this thing.

[Brandon] And I can't see it
because of the fire.

If the tornado
was to impact the fire,

it would just be a catastrophe.

Not only do you have the fire
department, emergency officials

trying to contain this fire,
but on top of it,

a tornado impacting them
and throwing embers into areas

well outside of the tornado
and causing more fire.

[Connor] This is gonna get
dicey with that fire.

North of the fire.

[Brandon]
Dude, that fire is wild.

Due to the fire,
I was behind my game.

I was concerned
for the emergency officials

racing to the fire.

But our job is to go out there,
inform the public,

keep them safe.

So I was very much in tunnel
vision to get up

to that tornado.

We gotta punch through this,
and there's a tornado

on the ground on the other side.

When Jordan screamed
"Get in the car,"

I was getting like
a little nervous

because he sounded
really serious.

[Jordan] Car, car, car!

[Sierra speaks]

Deep in the moment,
I almost forget that, like,

this is Colter's first tornado.

But every time I glance back,

Colter was always
just locked in,

focused on filming it.

So now the goal was for him to

actually have
the full experience.

[Sierra speaks]

To be able to see the look
on his face experiencing such

an amazing
tornado, it's awesome.

[Jordan speaks]

[Sierra speaks]

It's starting to get
a little east of us.

That's when the RFD will come
sweeping around.

The RFD, the rear-flank
downdraft, is where all the air

funneling into the storm comes
in and it wraps around

the backside of the storm.
So we gotta get east.

'Cause one, it's gonna get
really windy.

You're gonna get blasted
with dirt.

But also, I wanna stay close
to this tornado.

[Jordan, Colter, & Sierra speak]

[Brandon] Oh, there it is.

There's the tornado
in front of us.

Come on, go fire truck.
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go.

I need to get closer
to this thing.

This is
Storm Chaser Connor Croff.

We have a beautiful,
tall hybrid tornado just to

the north of Dixon,
South Dakota.

This thing is coming
right at me here.

Look at the beautiful
clear slot up above.

Look at that little cinnamon
bun here.

This is a hybrid tornado.

I mean, it's a cross between
a land spout and an actual

mesocyclone tornado, but you can
see fairly intense motion

at the surface here.
This thing is getting strong.

Hybrid tornadoes start off
as a land spout and then

eventually transition
into a mesocyclonic tornado.

A land spout is different
from a tornado.

It's not formed
from like a mesocyclone

from the supercell.

It's formed from the ground up,
just kind of vorticity,

just a localized area spin.

Strong tornado.
Wow!

What a shot.

I was just to the south of
the tornado and it was coming

down at like a little angle.

And so, I could literally look
right up through

like the dusty cylinder
and see the funnel cloud.

That was one of the most unique
shots that I've ever gotten.

Oh, it's hitting stuff.

It's hitting stuff.

Just missed that house.

It's strong.

know that sometimes
the adrenaline can make you act

a sketchy situation.

the ground just behind us,

about 300 yards off
to our east right now,

incredible pipe on the ground.

Look at that thing go.

Boom-- just, like,
a huge flash of lightning.

It was extremely close.

Most people would probably get
back in their car,

but that literally charged me
up even further.

After the tornado crossed
the road to our south,

it became very photogenic.

It was a fully cloud-to-ground
tornado, very pretty.

That's when I gave Colter
my pocket camera to film

because it's full 4K.

Colter, hold this.

[Colter] How do I shoot
with this thing?

[Jordan] Just point and shoot.
It's shooting already.

[Sierra] Excuse me, Colter.

Excuse me, excuse me,

excuse me, excuse me.

I had Jordan's camera, so it
kinda stressed me out

'cause he gets, like,
money off of that.

Good job, Colter!

[Jordan speaks]

Then I kinda remembered,
I wanna get the drone shot.

I wanna be cinematic
with this thing.

But we're actually on
the north side of this tornado,

which means we had rear inflow
wind, 40, 50 mile-an-hour wind.

So when I launched this drone,
it went flying

towards the tornado.
So my drone's basically gone.

Get in the car.
Get in the car.

I know I gotta put this down
somewhere where I can actually

go back and recover it.

So I ended up crashing it
into a field.

[Jordan and Sierra speak]

Just seeing the look of pure
joy on his face, I knew that

he was good, and it completely
wiped out any of the stress

or anxieties I had about
looking out for his safety.

what do you think right now?

It's a crazy tornado.

[Sierra] I was just absolutely
on cloud nine.

Colter just turned into
an absolute rock star.

I mean, he was filming
it perfectly.

It's always fun seeing somebody
get their first tornado,

but especially when
it's someone that you care for

as much as I do for him.

[Jordan] Great job, bud.

That was like
a one-in-a-lifetime experience.

I'm hoping I get to go
storm chasing again,

but I don't think I'd consider
it as a career.

I think it's cool,
but, like, also terrifying.

[Jordan]
I was extremely proud of him.

Seeing the way he reacted to it
was just the most beautiful

thing ever, and it made me
feel fulfilled.

I didn't care that I wasn't
the closest one

to it that day, it was just cool
to be able to experience that

with my brother because
that's a memory that will last

the rest of my life and
definitely the rest of his life.

I'm not 100% sure if we'll ever
see Colter being a full-time

storm chaser, but I'm excited
to see where it goes.

Oh my gosh,
that's so incredible.

I would consider that one of

the most successful chases
I've ever had.

The selfie video of me almost
getting struck by lightning.

It blew up and got multiple
millions of views.

I don't get how we keep getting
these magical tornadoes.

I thought it was awesome.
Jordan had his brother there.

I feel like any time you go
through, like,

an intense moment with,
you know, the people you're

surrounded with, you end up
getting a lot closer to them,

and it's the same thing
with tornado chasing.

The Dixon tornado day
was an incredible day.

It was a majestic tornado
and thankfully that fire was

contained fairly quickly
by the incredible

emergency personnel.

That was incredible.

What I do definitely in
the long term in every chase,

save lives, keeps people safe.

My passion is doing that,
making a difference every day,

just trying to leave
a positive mark in this world.
