This is the big day I've been waiting for.

I'm glad Andy's back in town.

He showed up right when
it's time to make gold and all

- the work is done.
- I'm right on time.

Today, reaper nation makes history...

at least, in the mind of kris Kelly.

The plan today is we're
gonna go over to the mistress

and steal as much gas...
borrow as much gas as we can.

So we're gonna fill this thing up,

and this is gonna be our first
real run on something amazing.

Ok, well, I'm just making
sure we're all good.

We're good, man.

The plan this season
was to get the crawler out

on the deepest ground
that I've ever seen

and get the mistress
grinding away on tomcod.

Well, we had a little
problem with the mistress.

Wow!

That's the airbag blowing
up, and up the steel.

The mistress is down for repairs

at least a couple more days.

And it took longer than we
thought to get the crawler

up and running.

- Chickety-check-check-check.
- We're mining, baby.

That sounds like money
to me. This is a success.

But we finally tested the
crawler, and it works great.

Now it's time for reaper
nation to push the boundaries.

Everybody else is
still stuck at 20, 30 feet.

I'm tired of trailing behind people.

I'm trying to get the next decade's gold.

We're moving into
another step of mining.

We're moving into the future

and we're leaving everyone in the past.

Everything in my life is
pushing me towards this event.

Everything that I've been
doing the last 10 years in this

bull is prep work for
what I'm doing right now.

I got here 14 years ago,
and this is the first chance

that I get to be the first
person to do something.

We did a test run.

It worked good, but we
weren't mining at 70 feet.

We were mining at 30.

Almost two and a half times
as deep, this next phase.

So that's big.

You know, hopefully we have suction.

Hopefully the line doesn't break.

You know, there's a lot of
hope in my heart this year.

Haven't taken a break yet.

Shawn pomrenke's season is on the line,

and he's rolling the
dice on a do-or-die bet.

Makes for a long day,
but right now is the time

to get it done.

We're following the trail of
the original nome gold rush.

We're digging down and
getting what the old-timers

couldn't get.

We finished up the pay on the first cut.

Until we get this second cut
opened up, there's no gold

coming in.

Wash plant's shut down.

Now the clock starts ticking.

When I just landed us a deal
that's gonna get us through

this dirt a hell of a lot faster.

There's an opportunity
to pick up 10 pieces of

almost-new equipment.

Three new haul trucks, two loaders,

and five excavators.

It'll be the newest
equipment I've ever owned.

Equipment like this should
get us to the pay in half the time.

But it's not cheap.

All this new gear is
gonna cost me $5 million.

It's costing me dearly.
I just took my savings,

a million dollars, put a down payment,

and then I'll have
$80,000-a-month payments.

You don't make your payments,
you lose your down payment

and you lose the equipment,

but I'm not gonna let that happen.

It's a gamble, but I have
to get down to the gold fast.

But when I tap into the
pay streak again, it's gonna pay

for everything and then some.

We're ready to get the hell out of here.

It's not gonna be easy to
get this equipment back.

It's 80 miles north in
Alaska's back country.

The equipment we're
taking back is too heavy to go

across the bridge.

So we're gonna have to drive
it straight through the river.

It sounds a little crazy.
That's because it is.

It's raining, so that's not
good for the river crossing.

the river's still too high,

and that we don't get
any of the equipment back

to this side.

The 650, the two 490s,
and the two loaders

have to come across the river.

It's supposed to start
raining some more today,

so we need to get up
there, get across the river.

Otherwise, we might lose our window.

It's gonna be interesting.

This rain's not helping anything.

If we can get that
equipment across the river,

it'd be a big weight
lifted off my shoulders.

We're gonna make it
work. There ain't no quit.

My dive will be a little
bit deeper than usual.

I have a dive computer that
will guide me, and it tells me

how much nitrogen
that I'm accumulating,

and we might have to
shorten my dive hours a bit.

But this ground is gonna be worth it.

What's the overburden look like?

Awesome. That's awesome to hear.

Can't hope for anything
better. On the gold.

Right now, I'm, like, over the moon about

what we're doing.

We ended up learning something
new, and we found that we can

target gold that is in silt
that is under, like, big fields

of big rocks and boulders.

And the gold that we're
in under these boulders is,

like, really, really hot.

Zeke tenhoff may
finally have his season,

rocking in a big way.

We know the ground that
we need to work exactly,

so we don't need to waste
any more time being inefficient

or, like, having any question
about what we should be doing.

I could not be happier
about where we are right now.

Last time out, we went
from a cheese sandwich

to a Boulder field.

And I think we tapped into
something really special.

The gold that's under these
boulders is some of the best

that I've ever seen.

But it's exhausting to have
to move these boulders

out of the way.

They can weigh up
to 500 or 600 pounds.

If you do something wrong,
one of them can fall down

and crush you.

That's where the biggest danger comes.

But judging by the gold that I'm seeing,

it's gonna be worth the risk.

Ok, let's do it.

This spot is really deep,
so we can't be down

for very long. I'm gonna do three hours,

and then my brother Sam
is gonna pick up after me.

Whoa!

You can't even see the
end of the nozzle or what

it's sucking on.

So, like, out of nowhere,
a giant Boulder will just roll

towards you, and you
have to, like, back up and get

out of the way of it, and then
figure out how to get the hose

out from under it.

You can take the risk
as far as you're personally

comfortable with it, I guess.

You risk crushing the
hose or crushing yourself.

It makes it ten times harder
when you can't see anything.

After a rough first half... Ok, here we go.

Vernon adkison is looking
to test his team's limits

in deep water.

We need some gold bad.

I'm telling you, a lot of hungry

With a nitrox system, I thought
this would be the best season

of my life.

But that's not how it's played out so far.

You have a tendency
to rub me the wrong way.

- I just want it cut.
- I got a plane to catch.

Me and Richie, my new diver,

we're not exactly seeing eye to eye.

Think I'm a idiot?

And his performance has not been great.

Pull him up. He's all up.

He's not gonna get any better.

And then the nitrox system took a dive,

and it's been down for a week.

The nitrox machine is only
running off of one cylinder.

At this point, we might
as well just go into town.

We got the nitrox system back up.

Richie's focused.

I'm getting royalties from other divers.

Including Joe full wood, and
I'm ready to push the team

as hard as I can.

All right, so I'm gonna get
somewhere down in here,

and I'll drop the anchors
and then jump back on them.

There's a patch of cobble I
found that looked untouched.

It's deep, but with a nitrox system,

Richie and Scott can
pull long dives today.

Five hours each, ten hours total.

We haven't done this many
hours in one day at this depth.

So it's gonna be a challenge.

Scott's going down first,
since he's got the experience

to get us on the gold.

This season's been
rough, we're behind pace.

And at this point, this
gold is not gonna cut it.

So, as far as mining is
concerned, it's virgin ground.

so we're gonna stay in this area,

move 10 feet, and see if
we can get on something.

these grounds, so there is

gonna be some trial and error.

It's really expensive to ship anything in.

That's why everything
in nome's usually older

and is run into the ground.

We ended up buying three haul trucks,

The 650 is our biggest
industrial size excavator.

in Alaska, it's a long way.

So anything that holds us up

is just gonna cost me more money.

and we ended up snapping

the drive line in one of the trucks.

The driveline's what shifts
the power from the engine

to the wheels.

out here in the middle of
nowhere, it's not an easy fix.

We're gonna hook up the
haul truck to the broken semi

and the excavator and tow it away.

We've had a couple
hiccups, but we're moving.

But now I need to get to
the river and help offload this

650, because that's the biggest,
heaviest piece of equipment.

And then I can see if it
makes it across the river or not.

There's only one way
to get it across the river,

and that's to go.

Here we go. Getting ready to offload.

We're gonna start out
with the biggest excavator

because it has the most clearance,

and least chance of
sinking or getting swamped.

Here it comes.

As I'm crossing the river,
I'll use the excavator bucket

as a depth Gauge to find
the shallow part of the river

to figure out which
spot's the best to cross.

I'm taking a over a
half-million-dollar piece

of equipment across the river.

If I get stuck or swamped,

I won't know until it's too late.

I still have to pay for it,
whether I sink it or not.

We're gonna go ahead, get underway,

get plowing forward.

Slow and steady. That's
how we're gonna do it.

We're in the water!

I don't like this at all.

I'd be ok if I'd never had to do that again.

When I started this season,
I didn't think I'd be driving

equipment across the
river. But here we are.

And there's still more
equipment to get across.

It's actually starting to wake up a little bit.

The gold's starting to

And so is the current.

And that might require me
to turn into a flaming ass.

But we'll all be happier in the long run.

I don't think these
swells are gonna last long.

This can happen sometimes.

But no matter what,
we can't stop mining.

Well, this is the first day
of the rest of our season.

We got to get gold today,
come hell or high water.

on top and then soft Clay,

and that's at the bottom of the soft Clay?

Which, at these depths,
is about as much as

it's safe to do.

We've had our problems
this season, but under these

conditions, if he can get
down there and do well,

he will redeem himself.

This spot's been interesting.

I've cleared a huge area down there,

and I've seen a lot of changing terrain.

Sometimes I'd go a while
without seeing any gold,

but then I would get into a little transition

in the Clay, and all of a sudden, "gold!"

So don't get discouraged if
you go a while without seeing it.

Just if anything, if you're
not seeing it, just keep making

a line until you see a transition change.

How bad is the viz?

Zeke tenhoff's been pushing
through giant boulders

on the seafloor for over two hours.

You're way off to the starboard side.

But with limited visibility,
things are getting rocky.

He's trying to mine, and you can't see.

It's dangerous.

If he's having this hard
of a time, I can't imagine

that I'm gonna do anything.

I think there's a line where
you're just wasting fuel.

You know, I hate to say
it, but it's just like, that's it.

I mean, at a certain point,
you gotta draw the line.

I've never heard you so
frustrated on a dive before.

Team tenhoff finds
themselves between a rock...

And a hard place.

It makes me feel a little
bit, like, emasculated kind of,

just saying this, but it's
like, at a certain point,

I just don't... It's dangerous.

Moving these boulders is really difficult.

It's no joke.

But it's gonna be worth
it if everybody can get

their hours in.

But if that doesn't happen,
if we don't get our hours in,

it's gonna be tough.

This dive that you just
had was, like, hellacious.

Me down there is so not productive.

It's like bumping against...

Well, you've already
said it's not productive.

- So there's a mindset thing.

It's straight-up a visibility thing, dude.

Working blind is like a
whole different skill set.

It sketches me out.

boulders roll out of nowhere.

I know that this work can be intimidating,

but nothing about it
was supposed to be easy.

I can tell when somebody
doesn't have the right mindset,

and, like, I don't know if
there's anything I can do

to make it easier.

The problem is I can't
dive for any more hours.

That's the problem.

Sam's a good diver, and he can do this.

But right now, I don't
think he's seeing that.

It's like, I don't, I'm not in your shoes.

I found my line of...

Risk to reward, you know? And...

I don't feel comfortable.

That's a problem.

Finally, the gold gods gave me a gift.

I got the big nugget all of a sudden.

Biggest nugget ever picked up offshore.

I got it.

Word's on the street, Chris mccully got

the big nugget.

You don't want that nugget
sitting around your house.

So I had to send that
gold nugget out of town.

But after star dog came at
me, I went straight to my place

and weighed the gold nugget.

It was 4.9 ounces.

And as far as I know, this is
the largest nugget ever found

in the Bering sea.

There's always the
Karma system going on.

I cut the guy's anchor line,
but immediately it felt wrong.

So, at the end of the day, I
realized you have to have,

like, some sense of

respect, and I learned a lot.

In mining, when you do good,

more good things will come to you.

I try to apologize to star dog,
and I try to be the bigger man.

I'm just out there doing the best I can.

And this time, the gold gods
looked down on me and smiled.

There's a big nugget waiting for me.
