Yeah , what's interesting about is we never really knew what planet this was

and you know , where were afraid that everybody think this is cyber tron and all

And that would confuse everybody

But i know that he waever actually got confused

I don't think they did actually

I think we were pretty confused

So here comes unicron

This is one of the most this , i think this scene

You know , caused more controversy and an issue than , than anything in the movie

You can just see how much technologies change

The viewers now even know what a cassette tape is

I guess we still have boom boxes for very few though

You see the old the affects the , uh , you like , um

Bluish look , you not propriate that's from the decepticon

Desceptan is a different color

But like , uh

Autobots has an orange color into it

That's the cancel of the color for this movie

Sure , because it would be difficult to keep them apart

Sometimes when they were warning and fighting

There's star scream . he's he's probably my favorite transformer

Such a treacherous swine

And i have always very amused watching chris laugha do his voice

And chris lana was perfect for that voice

Well , we're in this scene here where megatron is about to brutally execute somebody

And that's one of these things you have to watch in the context of

Of animation of that period

You didn't see people get brutally executed in animation

Whos this guy is suck in sidewalk

And you know , that was the

You know , that was , that was a very big deal back in those

You know , this is what i like

You know , this section is beautiful

What's funny you listen to the soundtrack here , you know

And this you can tell us it's just really it's getting eighties piece

I mean this whole thing just feels really eighties

And i i mean that in the most affection of possibly absolutely

I love with these guys have done with the color in the

This , this version of it actually looks better

I mean , they they've really done a lot nice stuff with the color

and they fixed the sound track five point one now

Because i remember there some

You know , the , uh , the effects

You know , effects coming in from , right

You know , the like a

The orange color from all autobot

A purple color from the decepticon is bad guys

You know

So you can see

You can see there was a difference

You know

you know what's kind of cold

We do as you look at the transformers spaces there's a real kind of nobility

And sort of angelicenness to them

Which is kind of fun because they have actual characters

But at the same time you just look at them

And they look like , you know , iconic

Can't believe you can't live

I love the soundtrack too with it . it's so eighties

Yes , i say . and this is eighties stadium morocq

I mean i don't even know what the pelime does that stuff it's sound bring

Eighties stadium moroc yeah , yeah

This is it's kind of like the amped power ballads and it's great

哼, not bad for an old timer

Lionel standard . he did a great job with that voice is what's great about cup is he's constantly

You know , talking about the old campaigns

He's kind of like the

You know , a crusty old guy

I love through throughout the movie how he talks about he's always telling the story

And daniels always wanting to hear him

What's what's interesting about it is that the way

You merged the humanness of these characters

And the technology geness of them are they

I don't think technology this is a word

But you get what i'm saying it

Did that you can there's no real logic to , uh

You know , a crusty old robot with a husky voice

But it all seemed to work and make a lot of sense

Oh there's the pink one

Oh that is a pink woh

Sue just made her debut

There is the one and only to the best of my knowledge

Girl transformer that had ever been made up to that period

And the nice thing that suu can do is she can settle this controversy is to whether springer seen in that shot or , uh

Hot rod

Who may or may not have been aptly named

I was really your boyfriend

Well , i was pretty monogamous

But in the movie

I was pretty turned on to hot rod

I gotta tell you

And i think during the series

Then look at i'm really good at . yeah

I mean you and springer definitely hanging out in the miwe were yeah

Springer and and arc

We hung out together

I liked him a lot

I could have gotten yeah

Some could have worked out there well

but what is interesting about this is that a lot of times

The actors would know things and have insights into the characters that , you know

We never did when we are writing it

Or , yeah

Or you all that

Because the actor was doing the character all the time

wherewe were wrangling one hundred and twenty five guys

And it was enough to just remember who they were

Would you ever hear the actress talk to you about

What they thought their characters

What would be fun if where their character

ars would go to and stuff like that all the time once

What one thing i really changed when we're doing the show was is when i first got into animation

Owen say it was a degraded business

That would be a rough way to put it

But it was a very set tdown fixed business

You know , he had like

Oh wait , nelson one says

Yeah

You know , this is a whole city changing into the , uh , fighting mode

This is a city

But the changing to , uh

Like is that is that tune tuna supreme there or mega supreme there

You know , may may try

And you know , this is

This is a close , close staff

This is decept consent of the bug to the eat up the metal

So they can get in

You know , this is all the hard rod

And they , they come into the tried to help

You know , i never noticed that bit before

Oh it what we're saying before was it was that , yeah

A lot of times the actors

You know , that didn't happen earlier in my animation career because yeah

It was all , so set down wherever

So this is all , all attack from the , uh , decepticon

You know , this one

Kinda have that aboidal great quality to it

And we got a lot of times

We just let the actors just sort of riff off what they felt that

And a lot of it first got a lot of resistance

Because there's a lot of resistance early on from producers to change anything in the script

And then later on

You know , they just get used to the way we were we yeah

These are great

No , you know the , uh , all the details

You can you can see that time there

We use all high technique

You know , it is a twenty years ago

But you know , whatever you see , you know that's all new

We created as a new

Uh , effects and animation and the , uh

The castle of the , uh , background and , uh , just every day

You know this

No . is this this is totally different

I mean you brought a certain amount

Animated the party that had never been there before . u yeah

You never . yeah

it does have a certain anime feel doesn't it

Well , you know the handsome mileage

You know , this when withdraw this

You know , this is , this is gigantic

There are so many people working day night

I love the detail there

Like having little , two little guys blast in each other way

My mom , you got receptor getting up in the background

And also we have the highlighting and also the , uh , uh , shading

So it's so three different color

You know , the value it gives us such nice step

Look at the all the background

The , uh , sky , you know , sky is ua fighting more

You know , it's not the blue sky , you know , right

Um

There's some really beautiful stuff here

I mean , you kind of squint and look at this movie and it's , it's

You know , not particularly here

We'll point it out later on

It's just really are there

So it's , it's really just artful

And , and there's a lot of extra

You see the contrast

You know , the , uh , uh , the southern things

I remember this scene actually

And i had to talk as i was straining it'll come up about here

There's daniel trying to wisn't that funny

And of course i wasn't doing that that comes later

but so that's the that's your section two hyeah

i did it

the match for the kill come hot rod look

oh yeah ， devastator . they were here

Yeah , one of the first mega transformers

she had to put five guys together to u

one thing that , that , that to bear in mind

when you watch this is just simply sort of the work order that we had is we had all these characters

And we had to pay off the old characters and bring in the new characters

And you had to show every character in his robot form

And then show every character in his transformer form

and i don't know if anybody you're back in new york had a checklist

And just it's just all the weird technologies that nelson had to make work

You know , i mean , it was really easy to

For me to write that stuff under the script

It's quite another thing

And so many so actually drawing him and figured out

You know , how they , how they work

Would you have to as a writer

Would you and nelson ever budheads on like nelson would say

I can't do that the way you've written that

Or i let's we've got a we've got no

We never discussing like that

You know , whatever he , uh

You know , he's consulting the story

Uh

I mean , he's a houses , uh

You know , quite a times . and i , uh

His concerin trying to transmit to the , uh , uh

Like a usual , you know

So we don't have any problems , you know

But just yeah , really well it well yeah

It wasn't wasn't like there was there's butting hi mean

You know , our issues that were so much about just macro plot

Issues that i don't think there was any budding heads on what things would look like

I don't think any of us ever disagreed on that that , that i

When i saw the stuff than the

Than it looked in my head that i was you just always really hard

Nobody figured out what to do with this trailer

We , you know , we tried everything from his trailer

Just kind of folded up and rolled behind him

But at the end of the day

You just kind of had to make the trailer disappear

It just , it was made of , uh , disappeum

Which was a cybertiny

An element that just made the trailer disappear

You know , they just , they just couldn't figure out how to deal with it

But it fortunately reappears so optimists can take more familiar form

I love this scene

Who optimist is making his , his death run

You know , and last heroic moment

I hate you're not one shall stand

One shall fall

Why throw away your life so recklessly

That's a question you should ask yourself

This is , i still hear about this scene

And optimist prime is

But nobody watches the listen to the commenter before they watch the moves the first time

And we had no idea

We had an absolutely no idea that we were doing that

We just thought we were getting rid of the eighty

You know , the eighty four product line

I mean , we knew optimist prime was , was a main character

We didn't know that there would be kids that would be crying

And one kid would lock himself in the room , in his room

And it was huge

Wasn't it

It broke the hearts of

Oh , i didn't know i'd be sitting around two or twenty years later

You know , and at some convention and having somebody asked me why i killed optimus prime

You know

And i , yeah

I was acting under orders

I mean , what was gonna fashion off pride

Do it now

It was such a surprise here

When you thought that prime was gonna do it

and then he gets it done to him

Right there

But because he has a heart , you know

Yeah

Yeah

He's . yeah , he's he's willing to spare even megatron

Which is that's such a great even spare megatron probably observes what they get

And there and then here's this interesting in it should beat where

A certain amount of guilt and complicity and optimis's death

I mean , if we're trying to wrench you that the every kid in america was looking looking a lot like

I mean , this is to take that long

What that was the longest destene in the history of of drama

It shocked people

It really shocked people

Because in those days in animation

It was either really squishy children and stuff

Or it was really politically correct

Or it was it was franchise based

And you never kill the main character off in your franchise

How he's gonna become the most powerful guy in the world

All anyway , back doors and wells

I came in and he weighed like four hundred pounds

He said i , i here i playing an entire planet

He he looked like an entire planet

Oh , i can imagine , huh

And he was not in very good health

But he was extremely sweet , pleasant

You know what we did , you know

He , uh , rees through the line

And after that we , uh

We tried to put synthesize and make his voices stronger

And that's what we did

He was kind of wising

Remember that there was he he , he was yet he died

I think , you know , two weeks or i've heard vying numbers amounts of time

But it's not only we thought kids have come racing into the movie to see yours and wells

You , you have to hire them for what they bring to the party

You see the ubof the all you know there's such good comedy in that

You know , if you think about it was kind what this whole story is about

And it's a lot about what movies should be more about than they are now

It's about transition . now we were doing it

Because we were trying to transition out one line of toys for another

But interestingly enough , as you watch this now

You can almost interpret it as character growth that the here's here's galvatron and he is megatron

But he's more than megatron

And it's kind of like when gadelf came back

So he's a bad guy

And what you're gonna see is you're gonna see the way the auto butts

You know , transform it's not through sorcery and weird stuff

It's , you know , they're

They're gonna follow a leader who frankly isn't up to the job

And they sort of all know it

And i think , you know , all the autobots saw the matrix slipping around

But there are of buts

They're on the same team

Who cares

I'm more worried about where it's going

I love the one bought with a texan accent

We were very the one regional right door , regional robot

Yeah

We , uh

That was another thing

We didn't worry about a lot

We didn't worry about how you get

I guess we figured they're all in disguise anyway

So they picked voices of disguise them too

Oh yeah

And you get twenty guys in one room

They all start sounding a life

Well , yeah , that was really

You have to really separate them

Yeah

I mean , you know that's better than , better than i do

Uh , cliff jumper was played by casey kson and , uh

We , we had a couple wrangles with him in the course of the , of the series

We had one episode where there was a guy who was obviously moo market doe

This is around the time

And it's it's really a film that's been discovered later on

Which was really sort of the last of that era

And was kind of an interesting toy

Because it was a reaction to transformers is you

If you remember the mid eighties was about the time that , you know , parents groups

And they were really upset about violence on tv

And , you know , worried their kids were to steal f fifteen and fly me around or something

And , uh , so teenage mean muting inja turnals came out and to mommy

It looked like cute turtle

And what the kids saw was the ninja sword

And people getting , you know , whiled in a half

And so everybody was happy

And so this was , we used to call them generically

We call them toasters and squishes

You know , toasters were robotic shows that where the toaster suddenly came to life

And squishes were , you know , any

You know , girl property or really

You know , really soft

You know , wiener property that , you know , we

We like to make funny a fun of

But yet transformers was the pinnacle of a toaster show

Yeah , never got more toastery after that

It's really kind of handing over the torch

It's great

It's also a light moment in the movie too

Making the autobots very human

Uh , great human quality coming from the hearts of the autobots

And they'd always projected a giant screen over at paramount

He was like one of those things else

And you discovered as a product that's wheeling

You can't love all your characters equally

Yeah , i mean it , it seems like there's a lot of demand for the movie

And it's certainly , you know , when i

But i do a lot of work in video games now

And everybody knows about the movie and people are always asking questions

We really is a sort of cultural icon to a whole generation of kids

And , and at the time

You know , it was not some huge move hit movie

And , uh , it didn't blow the front off the box office

But then again , you didn't have quite the same animated family market then that you do now

But , uh

But it really , really hung in there

And has been sort of , uh , newly rediscovered or not even newly

But as the , the generation of these kids grew up

Who cares as long as it flies

And other parts of his body should turn up here and there
