wanted to but i didn't i got a fever

i would like to thank everybody who's

come from everywhere to

create kind of an atmosphere that we've

had

we said on

at these gigs that we keep it short and

sweet and crisp and like no long solos

none you know because when we played the

forum it was going on for three and a

half hours and it was like james he was

playing

uh piano concertos and paige he was like

doing everything that you could possibly

do to a guitar

and all this sort of you know and it was

going on in the end i was like an

innocent bystander smoking loads of

cigarettes and watching from the wings

so we said this time we cut it all down

short just bang bang bang

one of the most original sounding tracks

the band ever put down on tape

zeppelin's musical exploration was a

vital component in their journey

up to this point they've covered blues

prague middle east and themes reggae and

the live shows featured a musical

kitchen that led them to wild fusion

rhythm patterns

with a band's eclectic set of influences

this track shows that they were never

left behind in terms of musical taste

bonza was always

a very complicated drummer who sounded

very simple

and

and

it's deceptively simple when you listen

to what what bonzo plays but there's al

always tiny little kicks and little

little beats all over the place that

just contribute to this

this feel

that he this incredible feel that he had

the groove was that was just the best

ever

some state john bonham's half-time

shuffle was inspired by steely dan's

1977 song home at last featuring

legendary drummer bernard purdy

[Music]

the pretty shuffle goes something like

this

toto's jeff borcaro would later pay

tribute to these songs on the 1982 hit

rosanna i used the halftime shuffle

groove on the tune rosanna the total cut

i stole that beat from listening to two

records

one was home at last another is the john

bonham on a fool in the rain as led

zeppelin tune

the bernard purdy thing

i like to call it the bernard purdy

halftime shuffle is basically this

[Music]

the john bonham beat that i copied from

fool in the rain was something like this

[Music]

for rosanna

i added

the bo diddley figure it's a shuffle bow

diddly figure

putting them together this is what it

came up with

jones piano motif is a clever variation

on richie valen's la bamba from 1958

plant delivers his storytelling vocals

about a man supposed to meet a woman in

a certain corner street address on a

rainy evening when she doesn't show up

he thinks he's been fooled phil collins

would later revisit the same topic on

genesis 1980 hit song misunderstanding

and yes this track was also recorded at

polar studios

full in the rain pushed the envelope of

what zeppelin could tackle robert plant

was a big soccer fan himself which makes

people wonder if the 1978 world cup had

an influence on the song's famous middle

section the zeppelin samba starts off

with james's latin-flavored piano

grooves plus additional effects courtesy

of his yamaha gx1

bonham's army of drums timpani wood

locks percussion and whistle sounds

built up in full carnival fashion bonzo

had explored the idea of multi-layered

rhythms back the 1976 studio experiment

bonzo's mantra which remained unreleased

at the time of and through the outdoor

fool in the rain is uh

most unusual for us really because

well i don't think we would have played

it had situations been different but

with the world cup in argentina

in uh

78 and a lot of this kind of south

american thing going around

and it being every time you watched any

soccer on television it was always a

south american kind of rhythm thing that

going on it's not an attempt to be

carlos santana or anything like that

it's kind of a little bit diversified

from straightforward

you know

instead of a traditional league guitar

tone jimmy's octave pedal solo was a

great choice as it doesn't compete with

the song's motif but plays along with it

a refreshing approach that despite his

personal battles at the time showcased

his great studio instincts for sound

design his acoustic guitar work and

jones piano counterpoint in the last

part of the song are deceptively simple

the level of gusto and musicianship

reminds us while they were some of

england's hottest session hands back in

the 60s

mexican rockers mana covered this song

in 1995 as tonto en la luvia

instrumentally speaking it's good vocal

is speaking i don't know rick you be the

judge

um

up until the summer of 1979 the american

recording industry was experiencing one

of the worst slumps in its history for

several reasons massive returns of

unsold records by retail outlets disco

music sold singles not albums slumping

sales by nearly all record companies

after 25-year growth rate of 20 per year

soundtracks for greece and saturday

night fever sold 27 million units and

record companies thought this would be

the norm a rise in the sales of blank

recording tape home taping was becoming

a problem it suggested a tendency for

music lovers to record songs from

borrowed albums or radio

infringe outdoor was intended for

release before the band's twin concerts

at net worth but production delays kept

this from happening so the album that

came out two weeks ago unfortunately got

a bit delayed again unless it was a

fortnight ago then it was a week ago now

it's next friday

just goes on and on and on

in the uh neolithic caves in peru

they've been finding a lot of coloured

drawings

on the walls

along with the colored drawings they

also found a

[Music]

new album cover we're managing to get

the album out in about two weeks

as you've no doubt read the reviews it's

tremendous

you can imagine

the album was released on august 15

1979. it's called in through the outdoor

which is

[Applause]

one of those methods of entry that

proves to be

harder than one would originally expect

[Music]

led zeppelin's new album gave the whole

industry a shot in the arm while

boosting sales figures for many artists

in the process in three days it was the

number one album in the united states

just the second time in record world's

history it has happened it sold 1.7

million copies within weeks of release

contrary to modern day historians who

insist the album was not well received

it remained on the us top spot for seven

weeks three million copies were shipped

by the end of september as a result the

band occupied a record breaking nine

places on the billboard top 200 for the

week of october 27th with every album in

that catalog on the charts

i told paige that one or two people

would be here but he said he doubted it

very much well i can't tell you how it

feels you've got a good idea anyway

but it's great

[Applause]

and

but as an album goes

there are several tracks that are that

are

well they're quite uh diverse

in their very foundation really

you see when i

i had no intention of playing again at

all

or even being a part of anything again

particularly and so when the time came

that it

that i was faced with

either saying goodbye to my fellows and

uh

and doing something totally new not

particularly musically or

or whatever and we had

we got together i said yeah well if i'm

going to do anything at all

it obviously has to be

uh

it's just got to keep changing it always

has changed to a degree but i just

wanted it to

like be a little more mellow or to to

explore

facets that normally we would have

thrown out as being a wee bit too soft

aspects of us that

weren't

probably what people quite expected and

i think really that is

going to be in the next few years our

ability to stay around you the fact that

we're now prepared to explore even

further and this album really is just

the kind of foot in the door yeah for

the next few years to come but isn't

that one of the things that kind of has

been a hallmark of late zeppelin surely

but i think this is like uh

at this point this album

is

even more demonstrative of that that

kind of principle

where you could get a lot of people who

considered that zeptin were only

good for like

the very heavy aspects of things or

heavy blatantly heavy i mean you can be

you can be dramatic without being like

uh thunderous you know

and looming and so i think this album

really is like the sort of the kind of

look whatever california don't like it

but i think really it's just shown that

after uh

dismissing all ideas of

of creativity on a musical level for a

while

that it came back the way it did

you know

and it's good it's interesting it's

probably

the sign of a lot more better things to

come you know i think we had a stagnant

period which we played through to a

degree after the accident

and i think now it's um

well i think we were so grateful when we

got in a studio together and found that

we could still create and it was still

interesting and it wasn't a bluff

you know

that's probably like the the kind of

hallmark of times ahead if it ain't i'm

off you know peter grant once joked how

led zeppelin's albums would sell even if

they were packaged in a paper bag so he

decided to put his theory to the test

the lp's expensive cover art was

concealed inside a brown paper bag this

way fans didn't know which of the six

cover variations they would get the

album cover was designed by storm

fortisson from hypnosis he worked with a

band on previous records as well as the

likes of pink floyd genesis yes and tent

cc in through the outdoor had six

different sleeves

letters a to f the photo session took

place in london the cetri created one of

the band's favorite bars in the united

states the old absinthe house in new

orleans

both front and back covers display the

perspective from each of the six

characters in the scene

all back covers features sepia toned

photograph with the man about to burn

the letter

[Music]

the main character is holding a dear

john letter these letters were written

to men by their wives or romantic

partners to inform them that their

relationship was over usually because

their partner found another lover these

were unfortunately popular during times

of war including vietnam

in through the outdoor featured an

unusual gimmick the inner sleeve had a

black and white dotted line artwork

which if washed with water would become

colored because of its production cost

this feature was discontinued after 1980

the album was nominated for a grammy

award in the category of best album

package the award went to super trump's

breakfast in america

another one of atlantic's 1979 releases

shares some striking design similarities

within through the outdoor sheik's third

studio album risque american graphic

designer karen goldberg worked on this

project and it was released in july like

zeppelin's album risque had seven songs

it featured drummer tony thompson who

would later join phil collins plus page

plant and jones on the 1985 live eight

performance thompson was then invited to

england for rehearsals for a led

zeppelin reunion which was cancelled

after thompson was badly injured in a

car crash tony thompson died from cancer

in 2003

both full in the rain and hot dog were

published as singles in 1979.

wearing and tearing was to be released

as a promo single prior to their

networth shows but the idea was

discarded the eight-track version has

the brown paper baggers cover cassette

tape copies use the brown paper back

plus the first and second sleeve is

cover

cd versions of the album do not feature

all six cover sleeves

the 1980 print has the title over the

second sleeve back cover is a solid

color plus track listing

1993's complete studio recordings has

the brown paper bag as cover all six

sleeves are printed in the assorted

booklet the 1994 through 2007 editions

have the second sleeve as main cover the

sixth sleeve is also featured on the

booklet which can be interchangeable by

the collector as well as one cpu toned

photo the tracklist is displayed on a

photograph from one of the original

vinyl back covers

2008's 40th anniversary collection of

vinyl replicas features all six sleeves

plus the paper bag 2015's remaster is a

vinyl replica featuring the first sleeve

only brown paper bag is included as well

as a booklet plus companion disc with a

negative photo effect version of the

cover

2015 super deluxe edition includes two

cds for the remastered album and

companion disc

two lps an 80 page book digital download

card and limited number print

led zeppelin's last three studio album

covers feature an incident that happened

prior to their release physical graffiti

depicts a new york apartment some of the

band's touring money was stolen in new

york during their 1973 shows at madison

square garden presence features a boat

exhibition at earl's court this was the

last venue the band played during the

1975 tour in through the outdoor

features a recreation of a bar in new

orleans the city where robert plant

received the tragic news about carax

passing and the tour was cancelled

immediately it's no surprise that the

other top four selling albums from 1979

came after and through the outdoor was

published here's a list of sales figures

at the time

in through the outdoors main character

had an influence on michael jackson's

moonwalker project

uh a hot dog

owes everything to uh

audrey

from the state of texas yeah to the

state of texas into the state of some of

the people in texas

this is a

track from it that we should

dedicate to

trials in america

yeah how come you know what it's called

you've been reading about the swedish

investigation

hotdog

[Music]

a rockable tribute in pastiche that owes

much to the state of texas the band

would rarely do sound checks while on

tour but when they did it was usually

down to a list of elvis presley and

ricky nelson covers medleys and whole

lotta love up to 1972 featured old-time

classics like marilu which seems to be

the main inspiration for hot dog

the song was developed on the 1978

rehearsals breaking into hotdog after

working on their new album's complex

songs seems like a good stress relief

therapy

jimmy played a telecaster b bender and a

brief but very audible acoustic bit on

this song he always seemed to have

problems when replicating hotdogs guitar

lines on stage jones adds his favorite

piano bar tricks along bonzo's upbeat

drumming for a road down memory lane to

the early days of rock and roll

concert versions of the song featured

robert vocals run through an even tight

harmonizer we can trace the effect back

to the 1977 tour

by late 1979 peter grant lived an

isolated life in his mansion and being

out of reach affected his relationship

with led zeppelin plant cautiously

agreed to go back on the road promoter

harvey goldsmith had lined up a

provisional tour in europe but nobody

could make a move until peter said so

november 28th

jones plant and bonham attended the

melody maker poll awards they received

awards for best band best live act album

singer guitarist producer and composer

jimmy page was absent and unable to

attend the ceremony as he was a witness

at the trial for the death of a friend

philip churchill hale a 26 year old

photographer and recent graduate of the

royal college of art was found dead on

october 24th at jimmy's plumpton place

home the 50-acre estate in east sussex

had been paige's residence since 1971.

it included a purpose-built home studio

where he finished the mixing process for

and through the outdoor with paige being

frequently away touring or traveling he

would entrust the house to the care of

phillip hale they became good friends

after meeting in the london pub paige's

housekeeper barbara spencer told how she

arrived at the house to begin work at 9

00 am

hale was asleep in a bedroom known as

the black room

spencer said that paige went to bed soon

when she went away kale there was no

response and called an ambulance hale

was pronounced dead paige's testimony

recalled how hail and a friend had

arrived at his home for drinks paige

said he intended to go to bed and he

lost if he could stay the night which

paige allowed the verdict ruled

accidental death by inhalation of vomit

and asphyxia the autopsy revealed traces

of cocaine and alcohol paige soul

plumped in place and moved to actor

michael caine's old house in kluwer

windsor in 1980 little did he know

history would repeat itself in less than

a year december 29th

plant jones and bonham attended the

final night of concert for the people of

campacha led by paul mccartney robert

plant joined dave edmonds rock pile for

a version of little sister it's also

funny to come off stage and elvis

costello

turned to me and he said i never ever

thought i'd hear dave edmonds do

stairway to heaven which is quite funny

mccartney's climax to the wing set was

playing the orchestra theme with all

musicians at the show

when do you think the led zeppelin will

tour america because we get that

question asked to us every day

well i don't know it's like when is it

going to rain in england really

so it would be interesting to see what

it's like in america again

especially in dallas

how about los angeles are you strong and

very strong in los angeles and new york

what do we know in los angeles

oh

do you think you'll be able to do it uh

seriously before 1980s out anyway oh

yeah i should think so craig

yeah it's just going to fit in with the

soccer season there

you know we managed to get these two

concerts in

since there's some soccer coming on in

america well we do have the los angeles

aztecs and uh we have got the cosmos in

new york right yeah

but i could play for the aztecs

you
