All language subtitles for ROLLING STONES - Recording of Goats Head Soup

By 1972, the Rolling Stones were riding

high, having released a trilogy of

classic albums. Like with their previous

record, Exile on Main Street, the next

album would be recorded outside the UK.

In fact, it had to be. They were still

exiles until April of

1973. They needed to find a place to

record where Kee wouldn't be harassed by

the authorities.

With visa issues, the location they

would choose would be, in Keith's words,

one of the only places that would let

them

in. Next album would be the last Rolling

Stones record to be produced by Jimmy

Miller. His drug use had now consumed

him. Of his decline, Keith later stated,

"He'd come in like a lion, but went out

like a lamb." This year would see mixed

image change from counterculture rebel

to humanitarian philanthropist. His

charitable efforts in the wake of the

Managua earthquake saw him receive an

official honor in Washington. He was

presented with a golden key to the city.

Later that day, he'd be turned away from

a snobby restaurant in DC for not

wearing a tie. Musically, for the next

album, Mick made a conscious effort not

to fill the record with purely rock

songs. Keith at this point had moved to

Switzerland. He later stated it was a

damn boring place. Keith and Ne are

really good skiers by this point. To

learn to ski when you're like in the

deepest depths of addiction is just

unbelievable. I mean, it's nothing you

generally take up. It's not the idea of

like, oh, I'm going to, you know,

massive shot of heroin and go down a

mountain every day. His drug addiction

sees him now in a constant stoned haze,

functional, but just going through the

motions. Keith was the heart of the

band, but he was simply just too out of

it. In truth, just getting him into the

studio is difficult enough. Others can't

help but see the similarities between

him and

Brian. Bill Wyman will have very little

input on the album, appearing only on

three tracks. His base parts will be

split between Keith and Mick Taylor. Mc

Taylor, though in a stable relationship

with a daughter, was fast becoming the

victim of the drug culture. He was also

becoming frustrated. Despite his

contributions, he wasn't being given

songwriting credits. Charlie was, as

ever, living a reserved life away from

news reporters and wild parties. He'd

been married to Shirley Watts since

1964, and their relationship remained

strong throughout the years.

This year, the French authorities will

finally issue an arrest warrant for

Keith and Anita, while also threatening

to issue extradition warrants to the

other Stones for drug use at nail codes

while they were recording exile on Main

Street. This is the story of the Rolling

Stones Goats Head

Soup. I thought it was quite amusing a

lot of it. The people sort of they hang

around Keith and they think they're

Keith. It's like it's ridiculous.

On May 12th, 1972, the Stones 20 million

lawsuit against Alan Klene was

officially settled out of court. But

when their American tour in August

ended, Keith was falling

apart. He feared making exile had

drained the last drop of creativity he

had in him. The outside world, he was

painted as a rock and roll outlaw who

balanced excess and music like a fine

art.

The enemy had called him the world's

most elegantly wasted human being.

Unbeknownst to the public, Heave was

actually trying to straighten himself

out. Mick too had misgivings about the

lifestyle. During an interview at this

time, he stated, "When I'm 33, I'll

quit. I don't want to be a rock star my

whole

life." Switzerland was a country that

catered to rich tax exiles. Charlie

Chaplan had moved there in 1952. David

Bowie will move there in

1976. Ke's American visa had run out and

it seemed the sensible option. In fact,

it was one of the only options. Ke's

rock and roll image had a downside.

Constant legal issues over drugs meant

his struggle to get a visa. Kee was now

intent on getting somewhat straightened

up. He intended to go straight to a drug

clinic when he arrived in Switzerland.

So, he loaded up on substances for the

plane ride over.

When he landed, he was taken straight

into treatment. Keith went cold turkey

while Anita was down the road giving

birth to their second

child. Anita had actually cleaned up

briefly for her pregnancy, but as soon

as the child was born, she went straight

back to using. When Ke had gone through

the withdrawal stage, he was starting to

feel normal. One day, he picked up his

guitar and wrote the rhythm guitar part

to the Stone's next single, Angie. At

this point, Kee and Eera and their two

children had moved into a modest house

in Switzerland. Ke now isolated himself

in his new home and attempted to write,

but the problem Kee had feared come

true. Exile on Main Street had drained

him creatively, and the last US tour had

exhausted him physically. In truth, he

wasn't enjoying Switzerland

either. Mick visited and the two

discussed plans to start a new album.

The two were undecided on where exactly

to record the next album. They needed

somewhere fresh. Around this time, a

film titled The Harder They Come was

gaining popularity. It had been released

just a few months previous and detailed

the journey of a young man who moves to

Jamaica in hopes of becoming a famous

reggae singer. The attraction of the

film had came from the soundtrack. He

was in fact one of the strongest ever to

be put to film. This is what had caught

Kee's attention, but he was also

fascinated by the sights of Jamaica. In

his low mood, he felt it was a more

attractive place than Switzerland. Keef

later wrote in his book, Life, "Jamaica

in those days wasn't what it's like now.

It was

booming." The course of action to move

to Jamaica was set by Keith. Mick liked

the idea of moving there. He felt

recording their next album in Jamaica,

the birthplace of reggae, may aid them

creatively. Also in Jamaica at the time,

they were as cricket obsessed as the

Brits. Mick would find it easy to watch

matches in between

recording. Other than his musical life,

Mick's marriage to Bianca was not going

smoothly. They were bickering

constantly, and this was bringing Mick's

mood down. By this point, not only had

Jimmy Miller began using heroin, but

Andy John's had too. You got some

recording engineers strung out on

heroine, you know, because they all want

to be strung out on heroin because they

think it's the thing to do, which isn't

the thing to do for engineer, I can

assure you.

Recording for Goat's Head Soup begins on

the 25th of November

1972. Jimmy Miller again as producer

with Andy Johns as studio engineer. The

main bulk of the recording will take

place at Dynamic Studios in Kingston

before moving to Village Recorders in

Los Angeles, Island Studios in London,

and Olympic Studios in London. Keith

bought a load of new guitars for the

recording, including two new acoustics,

a Martin D45 and a Martin 28. McJagger,

who was playing guitar more and more on

each record, would use an acoustic

hummingbird and a Gibson Les Paul. First

track they begin mix titled winter. It

came about when he was sat strumming

guitar in the studio. Christmas themed

song. The narrator uses the cold weather

as a metaphor for the absence of

love. During vocal takes, Mick takes a

break to speak to Biana on the phone.

Jimmy Miller wants something more

powerful, but when he returns, he's so

frustrated he's unable to deliver.

Despite this, studio engineer Andy Johns

thought of this song as one of the best

they ever recorded. Mick plays electric

rhythm accompanied by Mick Taylor. Keith

does not feature on the track. He later

stated the song had nothing to do with

me. This is one of the few tracks Bill

Wyman will appear on. Keith had felt at

ease with Jamaica the minute he stepped

off the plane. He rented a bungalow that

overlooked Cutless Bay, a 2-hour drive

from Kingston. And he too loved Jamaica.

The pair considered spending the rest of

their life

there. They owned two other homes in

England, Redlands and Free Cheney Walk,

but this would be their primary

residence. Keith purchased the bungalow

soon afterwards. The rest of the Stones

also adapted to life well in Jamaica.

They ate a diet of aki and saltfish and

drank coconut water. The next

composition they begin titled Coming

Down Again was Keith's composition

clearly inspired by the time he spent

withdrawing from heroine. He later

described it as a very mournful song.

The story follows a man struggling with

regret and loss. As Mick had wrote a

song about Brian Jones titled Shine a

Light, documenting his inner feelings on

the previous album Exile on Main Street.

Now on Goat Soup, it was Keith's turn.

The story details Keith taking Anita

away from Brian and his mixed emotions

towards him. When Keith enters Dynamic

Studios, he's amazed to see the drum

kits and amps are nailed to the

floor. He and Mick both sing lead on

this song. Keith plays rhythm, making

use of his Waw Wa pedal and Leslie

speaker. Mick Taylor plays bass and Bill

Wyman is absent. While Keith's

recording, Anita is busy scoring dope,

becoming friendly with the local thugs

of the island. Combination of naivity

and arrogance, she puts her and Keith in

potential danger. She uses drugs in

public and is kicked out of a hotel with

a group of local toughs. On her way out,

she begins smoking marijuana in the

parking

lot. Next song they begin, many refer to

wrongly as a sequel to Sympathy for the

Devil. It was a track titled Dancing

with Mr. D. Story actually follows the

theme of mortality and the inevitability

of death. Mr. D isn't actually the

devil. The D stands for death. In the

song, Mick details various ways one can

meet his demise. The song is in keeping

with the group's fascination with the

dark and morbid. At this point, studio

engineer Andy John's health is

deteriorating and he is unable to make

the session. Jimmy Miller hangs in

there, but he too is not in the greatest

of

health. Next, they begin on a

psychedelic throwback titled Can You

hear the music? The track wouldn't be

out of place on Satanic Majesties. Story

is a simple message. Music possesses

magic that can soothe the soul. In terms

of instrumentation, this is the most

complex track on the album. He makes use

of his waw wa pedal and Leslie Speaker

during recording. Taylor adds a

distorted guitar that's turned down in

the mix and Bill Wyman adds

bass. Andy John's is having health

problems and also his father is dying of

cancer. John's later stated at that

point Mick put his arms around me and

said we'll stop now. You go home and see

your

dad. The next song they begin titled

Angie, much to the displeasure of

Atlantic Records, was chosen to be their

next single. The record company were not

in favor of putting out a ballad. They

wanted another rocker like Brown Sugar.

Around the time, the song was wrongly

thought to be written about David Bow's

wife, Angela. Mick and Keith both denied

this in interviews. In reality, the song

was a farewell to mix ex-girlfriend

Marianne Faith. Keith had wrote the

guitar back in the clinic. When the

withdrawals had stopped and his fingers

were steady enough, he began strumming

the song in his bed. He then repeated

the single word chorus, Angie, as he

played. Mick would write the rest of the

lyrics.

Mick details his feelings towards

Marianne, their relationship, and even

her side

attempt.

And I still love

you. All those nights

with ain't that comes close to

[Music]

you.

Yeah. Ain't it good to be alive?

When it was released as the group's next

single, it shocked the public to hear

the rockers release a soft ballad. But

the song, to the surprise of Atlantic

Records, became an international hit.

Number one in the States, France,

Australia, and the Netherlands. On

December 4th, recording sessions come to

a halt when the French authorities issue

an arrest for Keith and Anita. Along

with that, they were also threatening to

issue the rest of the group with

extradition warrants for using drugs at

Nelco while recording exile. To diffuse

the situation, not cause problems with

visa for future tours, the Stones flew

over to France to appear in court and

give statements in front of a

magistrate. The case against the Other

Stones fell apart when witnesses

confessed they've been forced by police

to sign false

statements. Keith and Anita, fearing

serious consequences, refused to fly

over. Unfortunately, the pair were only

delaying the inevitable. Keith and Anita

began arguing at this point due to

Anita's reckless behavior. Keith flew to

London alone.

From France, Mick flew back to England

over the Christmas period where his wife

and daughter were living in Shaney Walk.

Two days before Christmas, a powerful

earthquake hit Bianca's home city,

killing 5,000, injuring 20,000, and

destroying 80% of the buildings. Bianca

feared for the lives of both her

parents. She made frantic phone calls,

but failed to locate either of them. One

day after Christmas, Mick and Bianca

flew over to locate them.

They were located on New Year's Eve safe

and uninjured. Mick, touched by the

devastation, ordered a free concert for

the earthquake victims. Concert would

take place on the 18th of January in LA.

Critics at the time remarked the whole

thing was a PR move with the concert

having promotional value for the band.

The concert raised

$350,000 with Mick donating another 150

from his own pocket and Keith auctioning

one of his guitars. Next, they begin on

a track that dates back to the late60s

titled 100 years ago. The mid

composition he'd been working on the

song through the exile sessions. The

story is a reflection on aging and the

passage of time. In the song, the

narrator is walking through a forest and

observes the world as a carpet laid in

front of him. Constant change in tempo

reflects the feelings of a carefree

young man to a weary older man. Keith is

absent for many of the sessions. When

he's there, he plays bass. Bill Wyman is

not

present. Next, they begin on what many

regard as the weakest track of the

album, the song Hide Your Love.

The story follows a woman unwilling to

show love to her boyfriend due to his

drinking and bad depression. Song dates

back to 1970 where Mick originally wrote

it on piano. Though the idea to record

it now came from Andy

John's. It was simply because he loved

the melody. Others felt the song lacked

depth. Though Mick Taylor always talked

fondly of the track. It features Mick

Taylor on lead guitar and MC Jagger on

piano. Keith plays the bass part as Bill

Wyman is

absent. At this time, Kee later stated

he learned to knife fight with a 6in

blade hatchet he always carried on him.

Keith and Anita also began arguing due

to Anita's reckless behavior. He flies

to London to continue recording

alone. Jamaica, word of Anita's

drugfueled antics reach the attention of

the authorities. The bungalow is raided

and a kilo of marijuana is seized. Anita

denies any knowledge of its existence.

She's arrested and thrown into the

cells. Keith gets her back in London and

at first he plans to take the next

flight back, but he thinks better of the

idea, realizing he too would be arrested

and thrown in the cells. He employs the

services of an upper class Jamaican and

an agreement is made where Anita will be

released with the charges dropped, but

it will cost him

£12,000. It was basically a bribe and

Keef accepted the terms. On release,

Anita flies to London to reunite with

Kee. At Hephro airport, she tells him

the upper class Jamaican friend was the

one behind the arrest and he took the

bulk of the 12,000 Kef paid him. Keith

thought about having him whacked, but

then he came to his senses when he

remembered how very rich he was at this

point. With the stone tax problem

solved, he was now earning an incredible

wage. He decided to put the past behind

him. He also came to a realization in

order to live the lifestyle he and Anita

wanted, he'd always have to pay

backhanders while living in a place like

Jamaica.

Next, they began work on mix song doo

doo doo doo doo

heartbreaker. Story details two deaths.

One of a boy killed by police due to

mistaken identity and the other of a

girl overdosing. Likely Mick took the

inspiration from real life events at the

time. The young boy was shot dead in

Queens in 1973, mistaken for a thief.

Billy Preston features on keyboard for

the track. Keith fills in on bass with

Bill Wyman again

absent. Next song they begin, Silver

Train details the story of a man's

relationship with a

prostitute. Silver being money and the

train a metaphor for a journey

short-lived. Early versions date back to

1970. He plays the main riff with MC

Jagger adding rhythm on his Gibson Les

Paul. M Taylor adds the slide guitar and

adds the bass as Bill Wyman is again

absent. MC Jagger was now becoming

increasingly worried about Ke's health.

He dropped into Ke's home on Shaney Walk

at this time to discuss matters about

their upcoming European tour. Anita told

Mick Keef was in the bathroom and so

Mick sat and waited. After waiting for

90 minutes, he eventually gave up and

left. Mick walked up the road to his own

house on Cheney Walk. Feeling deeply

troubled. He wondered what situation the

Stones would be in without Keith. He

thought to himself who could replace him

if need be. That night by chance he met

with Ronny Wood of the Faces. Mick left

there thinking he was a possible

solution should it be

needed. Rumors around this time

circulated that Kee was going to be

replaced by Ronnywood. Even the enemy

magazine asked Mick outright. He denied

it, saying it was absolutely

untrue. Around this time, Keith got into

a bar fight with a group of Italians and

pulled his knife in a serious effort to

injure someone. Another smashed a chair

across his head, knocking him

unconscious. Next, they begin work on

the final and most controversial song of

the album Star Star. Originally titled

Star [ __ ] Atlantic Records had

insisted they change the name. The song

details the story of the many groupies

of Steve McQueen. Mick defended the

song, saying he was simply writing about

what he saw. Atlantic Records wanted the

track lifted from the album, claiming

Steve McQueen would sue. Mick sent a

tape of the song to McQueen and asked

his written permission to release it. It

was granted. Atlantic Records still

feared backlash for the subject matter.

So for the American release of the

album, some words were blurred in the

mix. The track was clearly the band

having fun in the studio. Song opens

with Keith playing the intro to Johnny

be good and goes from

[Music]

[Applause]

there. Keith, oblivious to everyone

else, plays his lead throughout the

entire song. The song was banned from

radio airplay by the BBC in the

UK. The album complete, they now just

needed to shoot the picture for the

cover. The idea was them to be

photographed as centaurs and minotaurs

in a picturesque rural setting around a

pot of goats head soup. Everyone loved

the idea, especially Mick. None of the

pictures taken were ever used. Instead,

the cover would feature Mick's head

alone covered in a scarf. The idea had

been to make him look like Katherine

Hepburn from the African Queen. Keith's

head featured on the back and the other

three in the

gatefold. Stones also planned a photo to

be featured inside the album. The goat's

head boiling in a lavalike soup. It

looked very heavy metal. The photo was

never used. On the 26th of June, 10

members of the drug squad raided Free

Chiny Walk at 700 a.m. They marched up

the stairs where Kee and Anita were

sound asleep. When Kee was roused, his

only concern was to somehow get to the

bathroom to secure a fix of heroin. This

was the best way to deal with the

situation in his mind. Anita dropped a

stash of cocaine onto the carpet and

tried to grind it into the fabric.

He was charged with drug possession and

illegally holding a 38 Smith and Wesson

revolver and a 12 gauge shotgun. He was

happy the police missed a big supply of

hidden heroin in a secret compartment of

his poor poster bed. When he returned

home on £1,000 bail, he became paranoid

about the drugs, though. He went and

buried them in a field, but was never

able to find them again.

Keith will receive a £250 fine and a

need to a year suspended sentence. Not

long after, when Kee was staying in his

other home in the UK, Redlands, fire

broke out, half burning the house

down. Officially, Keef stated a mouse

had caused it by biting through

electrical wires, but it was reportedly

from either Kefir Anita nodding out with

a cigarette in hand.

It was their four-year-old son, Maron,

who raised the

alarm. Ke and a friend who was staying

at the house were able to save some

antiques and get his Ferrari out of the

garage. Side note, later in the year, a

fire broke out in a hotel Kee was

staying in. The whole floor had to be

evacuated and he was banned for life. He

denied anyone had fallen asleep smoking

and blamed an electrical fault. In July,

Michael Lindseay Hog shoots the promo

video for Angie. In London, the group is

shot sitting on a stage edge in flared

suits. On August the 20th, Angie is

released. Go Soup was released on the

31st of August

1973. The album is looked back on as the

beginning of a decline for the Stones.

Reviews were lukewarm on release, but

the album still hit number one in the UK

and US. Stones himself felt it was a

weak album. Jimmy Miller, who' done such

fine work, was now a shadow of his

former self. He wasn't the only one

having issues. Keith later described

himself as totally out of it during the

making of Goat's Head. He devoted most

of his time to scoring and taking dope.

Mick was now being forced to, in Ke's

words, completely take

over. Keith would later state in his

book Life. He was grateful for that. On

a personal side, the two were now in

different worlds. Keith was sinking

inwards through drugs, and Mick was

living an extravagant, glamorous

lifestyle. Keith would later say,

"Despite outward appearances during this

period, Mick was just as lonely as him."

Musically, Mick and Keith now both

agreed for their next album, they would

return to a harderedged rock sound. They

felt they needed to reassert their

rebellious energy. They would now revert

to a stripped down gritty rock sound. It

was a goodbye to the polished production

of Jimmy Miller and the beginning of the

end for Mick
