This has been a dream well
before I was in the business.

It's gonna take a team,

everybody's expertise,
everybody's input.

cannot be displayed, promoted,

seen by the public

until they arrive
at Detroit Autorama.

[Kevin] There's only so many
teams that have put these
cars together,

so it's a great, great,
great opportunity.

[Dave] We'll build a car
that nobody has ever
seen before.

The goal is to build a Ridler.

That is incredible.

It's all aluminum.

I don't know how you could
pick anything apart.

I wasn't expecting
that to work.

So, Eric's actually doing
a really good job right now
with those door poles,

and I really think that
this is gonna add
a nice element,

bringing some of the design
stuff from, like, the grill,

the valve covers,
the speaker grills.

[Eric] I love it. Fits great.

[Dave] I'm trying to create
a little bit of a very
light texture.

[Kevin] I don't believe that
this was in the original
design,

but this is definitely one of
those things that evolved

as the builds
started going right?

Because these are 3D-printed,

it's very, very vague,

but you can see the printing
lines just barely.

And I didn't wanna
get too aggressive.

Well, and it's a cove,
and that black enhances
the depth change there.

[Dave] Basically,
what I've done is
I've disrupted the surface now

so it's not lines
and it's not smooth,

it has just a little bit
of a bite.

That'll give it
a very uniform look.

And then basically,
by doing this

very light overspray
will create a texture.

Then when I go and do
the wet out,

it'll be nice and uniform.

And more importantly,
it'll kind of be used to

the idea of having
a urethane paint on it.

- Okay, it looks like
we need to rotate up.
- [man] Looks good right there.

[Will] This is not our
standard exhaust.

This is a pretty
bizarre exhaust.

[Dave] And I think it looks
a lot better not being
just straight.

You know,
giving that long arch to it

- to fit into the body
at the bottom of the car.
- Yes.

The biggest thing
with the exhaust is

it's kind of sized up.

It's three and a half inch
tubing instead of three.

We did these big,
long radius sweeps

that just flow
really cool with the car.

It's pretty wild.

Getting this car wired
is a little bit challenging

'cause we really don't have
references we're going off of.

I'm gonna take all of the
transmission harness

option port, OBD-II port,
and run 'em up here

so they're closer to the ECU.

I remember back in
the stereo build days,

- your wiring...
- That was a showcase.

[Dave] But I thought
about that, and then
when we got

a little bit closer
to putting the bottom
of the dash together,

I'm like,
"There's no room here.
Let's not bother."

[Justin] We can look in here
and see where it actually
tucks in under the floor.

All of that just tucks in
under that channel.

Can't really see any of that
running through the front
of the car.

I mean, as long as
we're nerding out,

this ECU's gonna take
this car to the next level.

This is a Haltech Nexus R5.

It does really cool stuff.

This not only
will control the engine,

it also has the ability
to control the headlights,

taillights, turn signals,

any ambient lighting inside,
and it's super flexible.

We're no longer confined
to using a traditional
headlight switch.

In this case, we're gonna use
Haltech's 2x4 CAN Keypad.

So if we want the engine
start-stop button to be
top left on the keypad,

we'll just program that
here in the software.

Ultimately,
at the end of the day,

it's gonna cut down on
the amount of modules
we put in this car.

Once everything's gathered,
once everybody is on
the same page,

there's a lot of simplicity
to it.

Yeah, super nice.

we've got these set up.

So, we're gonna
start the engine.

We don't wanna discolor
all of our exhaust
and everything.

So, we have this setup done
just to do a start-up,

make sure everything's
working well,

operating system's
all good and then we'll,

obviously, pull these off
and install our good headers

so they're all clean
and we don't have any issues.

It would look good
on another car.

- Yeah, those are awesome.
- [laughs] But not this car.

This one stresses me out.
I don't like it.

I told Dave, I was like,
"I want these."

And he's all, "Well,
you could buy 'em afterward."

And I was like,
"Huh, all right." [laughs]

[Kyle] I'm in here
looking at the data.

Oil pressure, coolant temp,
you know, air-fuels,

all the basic stuff
just to make sure,

you know, nothing's going
haywire on the ECU.

And Neil and Kenny are outside
looking for any mechanical
issues,

any leaks,
any kind of concerns at all.

When that thing starts,
it's just gonna shake
this aluminum car.

I'm picturing it.

[Bledsoe] We have to confirm
all of our wiring.

We have to make sure that
where we have all of our
parameters set is correct.

So, the only way we're
gonna be able to do it is
run it.

The, like, trans lines,
that kind of stuff.

anything going on.

This is, like,
a 12-piece procedure wheel.

If NASA was to build a wheel,
this is how it would be.

So basically,
these are a 3-piece wheel.

The very different thing
about these is

we made 'em 3-piece so
they could be chrome-plated.

Obviously, if anybody has
ever tried to get a wheel
chrome-plated,

they know that
it's extremely hard

to get the copper
into the dish.

So, if you break it down
into pieces,

they're able to do
a better job.

And even with this
big drop center right here,

Ogden Chrome still had
a problem getting this
beautiful.

It took 'em a little time,
but it turned out amazing.

But the other thing that's
very special about this

is how these three pieces
bolt together,

is they actually
don't bolt together.

So where you can see
the fasteners like a normal
wheel would,

these actually bolt here,
so then once the tire's on,

it looks like
a 1-piece wheel, almost.

So, it's a very cool design.

I'm super excited to get all
of the threads cleaned out.

We have aluminum bands
that basically band this
whole area,

and that's where
we'll make our sealing.

That's where the whole wheel
will be sealed.

So, we're just gonna
try to sneak up on these.

Obviously, now that
they've been chrome-plated,

they don't slip together
as easily as they used to

when they were raw aluminum.

But we're gonna do our best
to get these things together,

and get 'em glued
and get 'em on the car,

so Dave will stop...

I don't wanna use the word,
"crying," but asking.

What was my exact reaction
when those wheels showed up?

[mockingly]
"Can we put the wheels on?

the hinge outward so much
that we have now

puckered the front fender
from the inside of the body,

and we've damaged the paint.

When our buddy Roy called us
and wanted us to work on

his '88 Fox Body Mustang
and wanted to make it faster

and funner and cooler
and faster,

did I mention faster?

Well, I said ship it, buddy.

We took out an old 5-liter,
tired Ford engine suspension,

which includes a K-member.

It opens up a lot more room
in the engine bay,

and it's stiffer.

It'll brace up the front
of the car a little better,

keep it from trying to twist.

Some link bars for the rear.

We slapped in
a Roush Coyote 5.0.

It's 600 horsepower plus.
It's supercharged.

This thing's going
to be a rocket.

Should we upgrade
the seat belt?

No, the seat belt
will be fine.

Maybe it just looks worse
than it is.

We've got the intake
squared away on this thing

so it can breathe,
but it has to exhaust
good too.

So we built a two
and half inch with
Borla mufflers.

This thing is going
to sound great.

Now we just have a few
more things to do.

a ladies edition or something,

like four lug ladies edition?

Maybe we can amp that up,
show 'em the five lug.

on this Fox body.

get it on the dyno,

Look at that one-two shift
on the Tremec. That's good.

So I want to test drive
this car before Roy

gets here just to make sure
everything is dialed.

Everything's going
really good.

I hear a small squeal
under the hood.

I'm wondering if it's a belt
or maybe a worn out pulley.

That squeal's getting worse.

And I like the way that
it's handling,

but I will say
it's a little bit on
the stiff side for the street.

the shocks.

The first thing I noticed,

sometimes these belts get
a little bit of oil or grease

on them,
or they might get like
a little,

a little burr on the pulley.

We checked out all the pulleys
and everything,

but we sprayed a little bit
of like rubber care silicone

on the belt as it was running.

And as soon as we did that,
the belt quieted right up,

pulled the belt off.

But I noticed when I pulled
the belt off that

it didn't really have
a whole lot of tension on it.

So ran the part number
and got rid of this belt.

This one was like an 81
and a half inch long belt.

And so I brought it down
to an 81, uh,

It's just going to put
more tension on

the whole serpentine setup.
Since it is a supercharged
car,

the supercharger
obviously takes some force

to spin and create
boost pressure.

So a little bit more tension
is only going to help us

to prevent belt slip
when it's under load.

Belt problem fixed.
Now we've got to look at
these shocks.

on all four corners.

And there's compression
and rebound knobs

on the bottom
of the coil over.

And that essentially changes
the valving inside of them

for different driving
scenarios.

I just looked to see
what Viking recommends
for street cars.

Set it to their settings.
You kind of got to feel it out

and drive it, you know,
and then if Roy ends up

not liking it, it's super easy
to change.

You don't need any tools
to change.

You can literally just lay on
my back here,

reach under there
and then count the clicks,

so, super easy,
not a big deal to change it

or reverse it
if we don't like it.

The squeals are gone,
the shocks are set.

I think Roy is going
to be super happy
with this car.

We got it on the dyno
and, uh...

We tried to keep everything
as factory looking
as we could.

We actually went in
and also painted
the engine bay

- matte black so it all looks
uniform and clean.

And it's really nice
actually underneath too.

So we've switched out
all of your suspension,

the brakes, and we got you
four more lug nuts.

- I like it.
- One per corner.

I love it.

That's four more lug nuts
towards being a man.

The rims are phenomenal,
and I like how the rear tires

are wider than the front.
It adds to the look.

the dyno does.

Mirrors on this car
is not a requirement,

but I really think that
it's going to actually add

to the car as far as
the detail and everything
else goes.

Again, much like all of
my design lines, no hardware.

I don't want to see anything.

I don't want to see any gaps
around the mirror head.

So we'll just try and do
the best we can to get it in

a position where it looks like
it's a functional piece.

to just take like a CF1 mirror

and modify it and put it on?

So I think doing something
that's definitely a lot more

long and elegant,

With this custom car that
we're building,

we want to be able to get in
and out of the car,

and it seems like

where the drivers'
and passengers'
compartments are.

Well, I've been thinking
about the gauges.

This is a 3D printed spacer
so that when the mirror

is tightened down on the car,
it'll have like

a super tiny air gap,
and that'll just keep

the paint from being deformed.

And it makes for
a pretty good template

for drilling,
so we can line these up
on the car,

tape them in place,
and then we'll just punch

the holes right through
the mounting holes on this.

We had this problem when
we were taking it off.

In my head, this is simple.

But after the doors,
this is not simple.

So this is just
a constant radius hinge.

And the reason that
we did this is because

we wanted to really hide
the area behind the hinge.

Because that is a very hard
place to clean.

It's a very hard place
to make look awesome.

So what we did is one whole
constant radius.

And it just slips through
the hole.

It's got a nice cover,
so you can't see past it.

It's a win-win all
the way across.

Like the ones that...

You know,
with so many moving parts

and so many parts and people
working on the car

all at the same time,

eventually something
is going to go wrong.

- To fix.

On those hinges,
we have no adjustment.

the hood and take any chance

of having to repaint it.

What grit you got?

I got 150.
Do you want it to be
sandpaper?

Let's grab some heavy grit
so we can knock it down,

- and then we'll hit it
with the fine stuff.

We're doing it different
on this one.

We're going to approach
the hinge instead of

the pocket in the hood.

This clearance, these hinges,
because they drop into

the bore on the hood
right there,

They're getting a little
too tight at the bottom.

We don't have room.

If we turn around
and try to tap it in,

it's going to hit the skin
at the top of the hood

and leave a dimple on it.

So we're just clearancing
these so we can get it

to drop in another
quarter inch.

All about tolerances.

That's the name of the game.

Will's looked at it.

I mean, we've had as many eyes
as we could throw on it,

and everybody seems to agree
this is the right move.

[Kenny] This is the best fix,
because

if it's this tight right now,
by the time we get it
to Detroit

and it's this tight,
you'll have no paint left.

- It'll be rubbing on it.
- Just pray to the paint gods.

- Unbelievable.
- This is a big step.

Once the windshield's in,
then a lot of things
can be finalized.

You know,
I thought this fit better.

[Dave]
But it's been a lot of stress.
The last-minute things

always cause an extreme
amount of stress.

I'm so excited to see
what's gonna happen
with the gauges,

with the joules
and the floating numbers
and stuff.

I had to change the design
just a little bit.

I can't get that pitch,
that bevel like that.
