Australia relies on us.

after decades behind the wheel,

a generation of drivers
is about to retire.

We have a massive crisis -
the driver shortage.

So me and my mates
are gonna do what we can

to pass the torch
and get the next generation ready.

He reckons he wants to be thrown

We need people to step up
and fill the gaps.

Between our three brains, there's
so much swimming around in the head.

who want to give it a fair go.

Well, I just finished the job
up in Broome,

and I'm on my way south home.

But I'm coming up to Mount Magnet,

and there's a rookie
I've got my eye on

that's gonna be in Magnet
this afternoon.

Young fella out of Ireland,
Eric Scully.

Eric's been here in Australia
under a year,

and he's worked his way
into quad road trains already.

You know, in Western Australia,

iron ore mining is worth
about $140 billion a year,

and there's big money to be made
driving the quads that carry it.

We're talking four-trailer
road trains, 200 tonnes and plus.

a bit of a snap-happy character.

He likes to get out on social media.

your mental strength up to.

always gets me through my day is

I'm forever on FaceTime
with my mother.

I'm never afraid
to pick up the phone.

First day in the super-quad.
First time I've ever pulled one.

So, yeah,
it's a massive step up for me.

For the likes of Steve
to turn around and say,

"Yeah, nah, you're a good buck,
keep the wheels turning,"

it's... it's a really good feeling.

I mean, he's an absolute icon
for anybody who loves trucks.

So, yeah, for him to give me
the A-OK, it meant an awful lot.

You know, I reckon Eric's got

all the qualities
that we need in a rookie.

He hasn't got the experience yet.

My big worry is I wonder
how he's gonna go out there

on his own with the isolation.

He's got to be on his game,
that boy.

I'll call him later,
check on how he's going.

and get this load home.

They're silent,
that's when you've got a problem.

It will eventually just go bang
and rip the whole lot round it off.

We could not possibly go

without giving her the cross

This is the holy water
from Knock back home in Ireland,

renowned for being
really holy stuff, powerful.

If it was alcohol,
it'd be like vodka.

My mother sent it out with me,

and she made me promise
to bless my truck.

She said, "Did you bless the truck?"
"I did, Mam. I did."

She's blessed from head to toe.

The Pope would be proud of me.

Hopefully, we won't have
any problems on our trip.

Righto. Here we go.
First time driving the quad.

Yeah, super-quad rolling out there
from the servo.

It's a long truck.

I nearly need my 'noculars
to see the back of it.

Time to hit the outback.

Eric will drive 380km
from Mount Magnet

to pick up iron ore at Wiluna.

Then it's 530km to drop it off
in Kalgoorlie

before returning to Wiluna
to repeat the journey.

It's a total of almost 2,500km,
taking four brutal 15-hour days.

My God, she's long.

It is twice the size
of anything I've ever driven.

That's in weight, length,
axles, tyres.

You name it,
it's twice the size at least.

In the UK,
the biggest trucks are 18.55m long.

In the USA, 24.4m.

Western Australian
quad combination trucks are 60m long

and carry 200 tonnes fully loaded.

It feels empowering to be
on the road with the super-quad,

the longest combination you'll see
on a public road in the world.

To be heading for the mine,
pulling something like this...

...it's definitely something
I'm proud to be doing.

You've got four trailers
behind you swaying.

One thing I was told
when I started driving road trains

is your mirrors
are for when you're going backwards.

When you're going forwards,
don't look at 'em

cos all you'll do
is you'll give yourself anxiety

cos you'll watch those trailers
bounce and sway.

The more that happens,
the more you try and correct it

and the more you're actually
making them bounce and sway.

Copy in the oversize.

OVER RADIO:

When you get a clear straight,

let me know,
and I'll try and come round.

So, that's a five-metre-long load.

But the trailer itself
is four metres wide.

I want a dead straight run
that I can see

for at least a kilometre
coming up the road.

So, now I have a chance to get

every single part of this truck
around him and in

without putting myself
under any pressure.

As you get to the right-hand lane,

it might take 30 seconds
to a minute.

I don't know,
but it feels like a long time.

Here's a prime example
of what you wanna avoid.

So, there's a cow
on the side of the road.

They are like...

Every one of those guys there are
liable to run out in front of me.

That's a big unit.

more challenging aspects of the job.

just so I have every bit of beans

to get the speed up and get past him
as quick as I can.

to see Shelley Roseby.

She's starting off tomorrow
with a new job.

She's carting hay tomorrow,
which she hasn't carted.

Hay's one of the shit things.

The cart, it moves,
and it floats around on a trailer.

So he's just sent me over
to try and get her up to speed

and help her out.

My name is Shelley Roseby.

I'm 40, and I'm from Gunnedah,
New South Wales.

'I live here with my husband, Matt,
and our beautiful children -

'Sam, Harriet, Tilly and Gigi.'

We've got
a cropping and livestock farm.

We have beef cattle,

but I'm a PE teacher
and primary school teacher by trade.

That's where I've spent
the majority of my time.

I've got a lot of history
in the family with trucking.

I remember being in the truck
from a baby,

and it was always a happy place.

That's the dream -
go full-time truck driving.

Hello!
How are you? Lovely to meet you.

So, I hear you wanna sort of start
your own transport company

and get bigger and better.

That's the plan, so hopefully,
this will be the first baby,

and then we'll go onwards
and upwards from there.

With our own farming and having
to pay for haulage of our grain,

it was becoming
too much of an expense

and something that we had
to eliminate,

and the only way we could do that
is by buying a truck.

We purchased it for $40,000.

It was probably the most stress

that we've ever felt financially
as a family,

but we had to take that leap
and risk it.

So, the goal now is to actually make
money from the truck.

She's got to get it viable.

She's got to get a licence up

and get two trailers on the thing
and start making some serious money

and pay the truck off
and make it all work.

Shelley's licensed to drive
a heavy combination vehicle,

a truck with a trailer
connected by a pivot joint.

With Sludge's guidance,

she's aiming for the highest class
of heavy vehicle licence

in Australia,
a Multi Combination, or MC,

which would allow her to drive
B-doubles and -triples.

For fuel efficiency,

it just doesn't make sense
to be running one trailer.

We get paid per tonne over here,
so it really... Yeah.

I really have to,
you know, step it up.

And that's the big goal,
the big need, to get the MC licence.

That's the next step.
That's the next step.

Two trailers. Yeah, right.
Two trailers.

So, have you done some backing
and stuff?

With two trailers?
Yeah.

No, I've never even driven
with two trailers.

Well, that's in its own right.

I've got a couple of firsts
to sort of tick off,

so going and picking up some hay,

and my sister's
actually coming over.

They'll be in trucks as well.

So we're gonna run that over
the mountain to Mum and Dad's.

I haven't carted a full load of hay
on a semi before.

Hay's a shit of a thing.
The hay just jumps off.

Yeah, no, it's pretty nerve-racking.
It's a bit daunting.

Mm, very daunting.

And especially, you know, you
haven't been driving that long. No.

Even though it's tied on,

hay's still a shit of a load
that can move and slide.

So she's got to be super smooth
and gentle.

I've got a little test
that I wanna play on her.

So I'm gonna fill a drum up
with water

and put it
on the back of her truck

and get her to take me
for a bit of a run,

and she's not allowed
to spill the water.

I'll give her shit
if she spills the water.

So, when we get up here, the shed,

we're gonna do a lap
around the shed.

I can see it coming out the top.

The hay'll fall off
if you're not smooth.

Right before you get to corners
and drive around the corner,

you don't brake
halfway round a corner.

Shelley's truck has
a notoriously complicated gearbox,

an 18-speed Eaton Fuller Roadranger.

With a splitter button
and a range button,

the gear shifter is used in complex
combinations to shift between gears,

high and low range and bottom,
middle and top gearboxes.

If you are gearing down
and you do cock it up,

jump two or three in one hit.

Don't try and go to the one
you were going to.

Bypass it and do two.

Wow. Well done!

Stop! Stop!

Now there's water coming out of it.

That was not nice.

But at least I know
you can actually use the brakes.

But I reckon the drum slipped

The hay run
is for Shelley's parents,

who need it trucked to their farm.

But it'll be a severe test.

It will take her
along some of New South Wales'

most treacherous roads.

From Gunnedah,
she's taking on the Oxley Highway,

380km to her parents' farm
in Kempsey,

up the steep pass at Moonbi

and along the dangerous,
narrow, winding roads

that cross the Great Dividing Range.

I've never driven that road
with a semi full of hay,

so that's gonna be
a huge learning curve

and a challenge I'm petrified about.

The load she's taking over this road
is a tough ask for any trucker,

let alone a rookie
that's never done one before.

So it's gonna be a big push for her.

I've got three sisters, and we've
always grown up really close,

and still, even though we're
a few hundred kilometres apart,

we speak to each other every day.

Hello, nice to meet you.

'And they'll have a truck,
and we'll be all going in convoy.

'It gives me more confidence
doing it when I have them with me.'

Four sisters that drive trucks,
that's a bit of a handful.

It's what we do.

We've got a farm, so we use
the trucks to cart the cattle,

to cart the hay.

Yeah, it's not really
an optimal time to get the hay,

given the weather, but we've had
flooding over it on the coast,

so we need to supplement feed
the cows until the grass comes back.

Yeah, but still, everyone's
still got to be fed, don't they?

That's the trouble.

even for a person like me.

Like, I'd be very careful
with that load of hay.

It's a pretty big effort
for a first run.

that it's too big a load.

Going out through the mountain path
is what they're concerned about.

Being a rookie, she is green.
She is learning.

So we don't want anything stupid
to happen first time out.

There's very little

When you're going
in and out of the mine,

you wanna try and keep the dust
to a minimum.

Obviously, we're in the outback,

so you kind of can't
because, well, it's made of dust.

Important as an Irish buck,

when you're trying to communicate
with guys,

apparently,
we're hard to understand.

I don't see how.
We speak perfectly normally.

The rest of the world
has the problem, but, yeah.

And sometimes, they don't.

But it's OK cos it means I get to
talk to somebody other than myself.

with iron ore in our first trailer.

We are going to get 17 tonnes.

So, in total, we're allowed
a payload of 132.96 tonnes.

That's a lot of tonnes.

Now we are onto our final trailer.

Soon enough, we'll be rolling out.

But I have already identified
a challenge.

The location we've loaded
is right at the bottom of the hill.

This is gonna be painful
to even get this thing moving,

let alone getting it up the hill.

Yeah, no, I'll roll her back.

Quads are not something that's
been designed to go backwards.

Then again, Irish people aren't
exactly designed to drive quads,

so it's a win-win.

the notorious Walcha Mountain.

This is the biggest challenge
of the day.

The pull over Walcha Mountain,
there's so many blind corners.

It can be a really dangerous road.

It's unfortunate,
but it has killed a lot of people.

Really tight, windy, hilly,
lot of corners.

You're on the wrong side
of the road

getting around the corners
with the flat-top 45-foot.

Getting over this mountain
will be interesting,

and especially, you know,
she hasn't done it before.

I am nervous, definitely.
100%, I'm nervous.

It's a road that I've not driven
with such a big load on

and such a long trailer.

The length of the trailer
will really change

my course of trajectory
around those corners.

Trailer cuts across the corner,

so if I'm not out far enough
when I take that corner,

then the trailer will cut across
straight behind me.

They're so tight.

Always got to be really vigilant
about what's coming the other way.

We've got Jode up ahead.

She'll call anything
that's coming around

any of those tight corners
that I need to sort of hug the line

or get over
the other side of the line for.

And then Amy's behind us.

She'll let us know
if anything's behind.

The challenge of this road

really takes over people
when they're on their motorbikes.

Crash zone
for 40-something kilometres.

Almost hold your breath
because I've seen how it ends.

About ten years ago, I was...

I was actually driving this road
in a car,

and I was the first responder
to a motorcycle accident.

We did CPR for over an hour.

He didn't survive, unfortunately,
and it was, erm...

it was really hard to...

...I guess, walk away
from that situation knowing that...

...you know, he wasn't going home.

His family
were never seeing him again

and that we were the last people
to sort of see him alive, so...

And, like, I didn't sleep
that night.

I was on my way to Mum and Dad's,
and I remember lying there thinking,

you know, that his partner
would have been told by then

and what
she would have been going through.

Like, you don't want anyone
to sort of think about that,
