to a pauper family

And by some mysterious
happenstance,

the babies were born identical.

Amid the hustle
and bustle of humanity

stood historic London Bridge.

Here the pauper child, Tom
Canty, grew to boyhood.

Each day his father insisted
that he hobble forth to beg

even though under the King's law

begging was a crime.

And even minor crimes were
then punishable by death.

one means of escape

from his sordid surroundings.

He let his imagination
fashion dreams of a better life.

surrounded by servants.

And surely, nothing could be
more wonderful than this.

While at the great palace
at Westminster

a good two leagues distant
sat the Prince of Wales

fashioning strangely
different dreams.

Wouldn't it be wonderful
to come and go as he pleased,

to play with boys his own age?

an ordinary human being?
