One of my foster fathers,
he was a gemologist.

See, Art Smith
was this black jewelry designer

in New York City,
and he would design all these

extraordinary pieces, he would
design pieces for, like,

Duke Ellington
and-and Lena Horne.

How have I never heard of him?

He opened up his
first jewelry store in 1940.

When you came in
to the store that day,

what were you shopping for?
