The town offers up one of your daughters,
and in return, you get a truck full of guns?
Fede calls it security.
I call it extortion.
Alba.
Surviving six ofrendas--
such luck.
I have to do something.
Justina?
Don't make me say it.
He will makes things worse.
It's not our fight.
She loves me. She would never leave.
She wouldn't.
You are why we came back. And now she's gone.
You think we'll ever stop moving?
Sure. As soon as we make it back.
The solar panel is outside.
Take anything useful?
Yeah, actually, I think we're pretty well stocked.
Sticky Fingers Dixon there.
I'll return these when we leave.
Oh.
And when do you think that will be?
Um, once we fix the boat.
If the weather holds up, maybe, uh, maybe a week.
Oh.
I didn't know-- I just wanted to say...
Please.
I just wanted to say I'm sorry.
I feel like us being here has, well,
caused a lot of trouble.
No.
Justina and Roberto...
that was a problem before you came.
Why don't you want them to be together?
Um, she's a sweet girl, she is.
But it's no good, um, the two of them together.
I don't even know how to explain.
Where I come from,
you can just say it's complicated.
Yes, it's complicated.
Come on. We're gonna put on that rudder today.
You don't need my help.
We wouldn't even have that thing if it wasn't for you.
It doesn't matter now.
What? You don't want to come with us anymore?
I can't live without her.
You ready?
Yeah, let's go.
Perfect, Carol.
You need to reinforce this. Okay.
Cross it over to the right like this. Yup.
Bring that first end back around...
Yup. ...and then pop it through the hole.
So once the two suns are just right on top of each other.
Boom!
Oh, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes. Yes.
I see it.
Help me with that. Thank you.
Pass me that hammer.
Carol.
Can you pass me that hammer?
Sorry.
You okay?
It's my fault. It's my fault Justina's gone.
I was trying to reassure her last night.
I think I put the idea in her head.
Stop it.
Don't say hot dogs.
We're finally going home.
You gotta let that shit go.
When I first saw him in the creek,
they look so innocent, so in love.
It was like a mirage.
It's an endangered thing in this fucked up world.
It made me kind of want to root for 'em.
Yeah, well. That was your first mistake.
I don't think you believe that.
That shit that you're thinking is a mistake.
The same mistake I made back in France.
It's the same mistake we're always making.
It's not a mistake.
We're always fighting everyone's fights.
Sometimes we have to fight for ourselves.
If anything's worth fighting for, isn't it
two young people that just want to be together?
How can you not even care?
What makes you think I don't care?
Well, stop acting like there's nothing we can do.
Justina's gone.
There's nothing we can do about it.
She ain't coming back.
Hell, none of them coming back.
Fuck.
85 degrees and 12.3 minutes.
I think I'm getting the hang of this, Daryl.
Letting people have space when they need it is a skill.
One I never mastered.
Me neither.
So I live alone.
Yeah, I tried being on my own a few times.
Thought it was the answer. It wasn't.
I'm coming up on 10 years now in el faro.
The lighthouse is the longest I've ever lived anywhere.
- Really? - On land.
Most of my adult life I spent at sea.
Sounds nauseating.
Ah, the ocean is home to some of my greatest memories.
Not me.
Although I do love a blanket of stars.
Mm.
I feel the world is hard.
No reason not to have companionship.
Of course you understand that.
Alright, so, the rabbit runs out the hole,
runs around the tree,
and then hops right back into its hole like so.
Uh, great work, bro.
Now you got to do it with your eyes closed. Daryl!
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. We can just finish this up later, I guess.
Yeah.
How is it going with Cooper?
He's got a lot to say.
It's charming, isn't it?
Yeah.
But he knows a lot about sailing,
and you could use an experienced hand.
I told her Roberto's not coming.
Cooper grew up on the California coast.
He's been wanting to get back for a while,
see who he can find.
Nah, we'll be fine.
Will you?
I fixed the rudder, didn't I?
Even if you were proficient sailors,
which, no offense, you are not,
crossing the Atlantic is a totally different story.
Nah, we'll be alright.
We didn't do so great last time.
You think Cooper would have gotten us through that storm?
Oh, he might have.
Why don't you come?
You know everything there is to know.
I know you really miss being on the ocean.
That's a really nice invitation.
You and Cooper both. We'll have a full crew.
There's a lot I miss about my old life.
But things have changed. I've changed.
I'm content here.
But my point stands. Take Cooper.
No, we'll be fine. We just had a little bit of bad weather,
bad luck.
Your boyfriend sure doesn't like taking advice, does he?
No. It's-- He's-- We're not--
Really? Really.
You've never...
Never.
Nope.
How's it looking?
Okay. Anyway...
...think about it.
Valentina said you guys want me to sail with you.
Can I just say?
I'm honored, bro.
Truly.
I've always dreamed of dipping my toes in Monterey Bay again.
Yeah, I'm a banana slug.
A what?
Through and through.
See if my mom made it through.
But how the hell was I gonna do that?
I had no idea.
And then you showed up.
With this beauty.
Talk about dumb luck.
Super dumb.
You think you can help us get there, though?
Yeah-- Yeah. Sure thing.
How long will that take?
Two weeks, three, maybe,
depending on the weather.
Alright, let it out.
How's it look? Looks good.
Tie it down.
Aah!
Move!
Everybody okay?
Cooper. Where is Cooper?
What is that? I don't know.
Solaz.
It's under attack.
Try not to do anything stupid when we get there.
Can't make any promises.
Check on Roberto and Antonio,
and we get the hell out, alright?
- I get it. We're leaving. - Alright.
Come on.
The hell is that?
Alonzo, no.
Alonzo.
Alonzo.
It was his nephew.
I need to check on Roberto. Which way do I go?
This way. I'm with you.
Okay.
I'll meet you at the square.
Alright.
Roberto!
Antonio!
Let's load up on ammo and get back down there.
I'll see you there.
We need to get you inside.
No, I'm okay. We need to fight.
No. No. Come on. Inside.
We're gonna get it fixed up.
Shit. Shit!
It's quiet.
Yeah. Something ain't right.
What the hell was that?
Dios...
Cover!
Quick mission, huh?
Yeah.
Carol, come with me.
Daryl!
Daryl. Hurry!
Si.
Hey, caught one!
What did he say?
They know of El Alcazar,
and the gifts they bring us.
But why destroy everything? What-- What's the point?
The fuck do they want?
To burn it all down.
Someone is escaping.
It's Roberto.
Hey!
Hey! You interfered with him.
He was going to stop Roberto.
Well, he was gonna shoot him.
He was going to shoot the tires.
You're a fucking liar. Hey, hey, hey.
Listen to me. You have made a huge problem.
You should not have come--
What happened?
Roberto took a truck, got away.
Well, we got to go after him.
We need every person we have to keep the village protected.
If Roberto gets to El Alcazar... I'll get him.
...he could destroy our alliance.
I'll go. Unless he gets himself killed first.
He is less able to survive out there than Roberto.
Actually,
when was the last time you even left the village?
Hmm?
I'll go with him.
We'll bring him back.
Okay. Suit yourself.
You don't have to do this.
Your kid is missing.
When that happens, having help is a good thing.
Do you have children?
No.
Not anymore.
I'll, uh, grab the ethanol from the shed.
Meet you outside?
Mm-hmm.
You gonna say what's on your mind?
I think you should let Roberto go.
Even if it gets him killed?
He was gonna run off with Justina.
You were alright with that.
What's the difference?
They were together, at least. And he wasn't acting crazy.
He ain't gonna stop.
He comes back here, nothing changes.
Suddenly you're Roberto's champion?
I just think he's old enough to make up his own mind.
That's it.
And if he dies?
Are you ready?
Guess I'll see you when we get back.
Hey! Wait up.
If you're going, I'm going.
Do you think he'll find Justina?
He won't stop till he does.
There's tracks down both roads.
Can you tell which way he went?
That way.
Roberto! Shh!
There might be somebody nearby.
What is that?
Compass.
Roberto gave that to her before we left.
So they're together.
But where?
What about Justina?
Where's that convoy go next?
Barcelona.
Bad men, they take our water.
I'll go get your water.
We have to fight them.
Your boyfriend sure doesn't like
taking advice, does he?
No.
We're not...
Really?
Nope!
David Zabel: When we wrote the scene
where Valentina assumes that Daryl and Carol are a couple,
I thought that Norman and Melissa
would have a lot to say about it.
They did not.
They seemed to appreciate the humor
and seem to recognize that it's a reasonable assumption.
And at the moment, you know, I think works very charmingly.
Ooh, fun. She's spunky.
I like the camaraderie between Valentina and Carol,
just kind of, eh, beginning friendship there.
David Zabel: In this season, we were trying to move Carol
a little bit more towards a place of peace.
So we thought having a model of that was good
and would be a good relationship,
which I think it turned out to be.
Irina, who plays Valentina, was fantastic.
You hope things will play out well.
If you're lucky, then things play out
even better than you expected.
How's it look?
Looks good. Tie it down.
Episode four-- the title is "Frontier Justice."
It really is an episode
that centers around an attack on the town of Solaz del Mar.
And so it involves a story about a frontier town
that's trying to defend itself from marauders,
these primitivos.
Yeah. They see Primitivos coming.
Of course they have to go to battle.
3...2...1. Action!
David Zabel: The Primitivos was an idea that we had in the writers room
that we had a lot of fun with.
We just wanted a group that was completely amoral,
that had almost no intent except destruction.
Jason Richman: Here's kind of a hopeless army.
So it's kind of like a psycho criminal on the loose.
David Zabel: We thought that would be really scary
and it would be true to an apocalypse,
especially some years down the road.
And so out of that came this kind of idea
of these wild primitivos,
which obviously means primitive people.
We gave the primitives a very primal visual.
They're dressed in animal skins, and they have horns.
And it took quite a while to come up with a look
that felt real and not too fantastical.
Sebastien Fouassier: Today, I got really excited,
'cause we have like 60 stunt people working on this scene.
Eduardo Noriega: You need so many people to be coordinated,
just to be able to shoot a scene like this
all together at the same time, doing the same specific shot.
Norman Reedus: It's a lot of chaotic movement.
There's a lot of action and adrenaline.
Melissa McBride: It was, like, the longest action sequence
maybe that I can remember.
There were so many setups for that.
Sebastien Fouassier: We have, you know, vehicles.
One is crashing through the gate.
We have primitivos fighting everywhere.
We have Daryl and Carol
also making their way through the gate.
Brawl. Yeah. So-- Exactly.
And then...
There's a fighting style
that I've tried to sort of adapt and grow along the years.
I choose to have fluid weapons to duck under arms and swing.
And, you know, it's always
how do I get from this point to that point
with the least amount of effort in the smoothest way?
Because we're always running through.
I try to tell the story with the stunts.
And our stunt team is really, really good.
I love this choreography.
Paz is so physical and has a lot of weapons,
and she uses everything for the fight.
So this is the most exciting part for me.
Melissa McBride: Really, it was one of the most difficult action sequences
that I've ever shot.
It was complex for the director to put together.
Paco did a really good job.
Cut, cut, cut!
Something ain't right.
David Zabel: In our constant attempt to find new ways to use walkers,
we talked about these catapults that are used
to project the flaming walkers into the town.
That was an idea of a medieval attack on a town.
Norman Reedus: They do it with a light effect.
So there's a crane and a giant ball,
sort of lantern that flies through the sky.
You know, that's what that looks like.
They hit, and then they spread out.
And they show up, and they're already out.
Now we're gonna roll
for the last piece of the fight.
We're gonna be shooting now in that direction, okay?
We had a lot of people on fire.
Paco Cabezas: And fire, burning.
We had nine zombies on fire at the same time,
which was pretty good.
Paco Cabezas: Ready, ready.
Norman Reedus: They coat themselves in this gel, and the gel is freezing.
It's a bunch of big stunt guys,
like, you know, looking really scary,
and they're freezing.
We did a few tests with Greg and his team and my team
where we kind of mix all this energy
and experience together to make it look cooler.
Time-out, time-out!
Sebastien Touassier: The most challenging thing?
Everything is a challenge.
Eduardo Noriega: In this town, there are some people
who are against El Alcazar and La Ofrenda.
But there are some of us
who think that it's a price we have to pay,
because they protect us.
But after this massacre,
there are lots of doubts about the real protection
that we receive from El Alcazar.
Hey!
