The solution channel itself
is a massive feature.

I mean, plenty big enough
to have accepted

whatever fell out
of the Money Pit.

It's plenty big enough to
have swallowed up any treasure.

So TOT-1 is designed
to dig deeper,

where this treasure
might have fallen to,

and we're very excited about it.

This will be the last can
in the Money Pit.

of the Knights Templar

were connected

that match symbols which

matched the design of a button

in this feature on Lot 5.

in the museum regarding
another potentially key location

that may hold answers
to the treasure mystery,

the triangle-shaped swamp.

We've done
a lot of work in the--

in the swamp over the years.

And, you know, how do you
connect this spot to that spot?

What features might be
associated with other features?

And I just wanted
to try to see if there was

any connective tissue.

has discovered numerous man-made
structures throughout the swamp

such as a massive
stone-paved feature

that geoscientist
Dr. Ian Spooner

has carbon-dated
to approximately 1200 AD;

the so-called Eye of the Swamp,

which may date to 1680;

and a stone road
in the southeast corner

that may have also been created
in the 17th century.

However, this year, the team

has uncovered
wooden survey stakes

that lined sections of
a mysterious cobblestone pathway

all through the brackish bog

and an empty brick and slate
vault-like feature

in the northern region,

a vault which matched an image
in a 19th century book

that researcher
John Edwards believes

may offer evidence
that both the Knights Templar

and the Knights of Malta

buried priceless religious
artifacts on Oak Island

between the 12th
and 17th centuries.

I had to task Steve
with all the C-14 tests

so we can sit around and have
a comprehensive understanding

of what's been done
in the swamp to date.

has compiled
the scientific test results

from wood and organic materials
in these features

in an effort to help determine
when they were made

and just who
may have created them.

The way I'm gonna start this,
I have lots of printouts.

So I went through
all the C-14, the dendro.

I added as many as I could.

When we look at things
like the cobble path,

we found really definitive
context, like a pile of stones

and a cut stake underneath it.

And so we know

that that cut stake was a survey
stake that was used to make

the structure, and then we have
13 of those that we dated.

Let's start at the cobble path.

We've got 600 feet
of cobble path

with multiple survey stakes.

Dates are 1650,
maybe into the 1700.

Multiple dates, overlapping.

We have the Eye,

which is in the north end
of the swamp.

That also dates 1630 to 1680.

And now the north end
of the swamp, we have the vault.

It goes back to as far
as the late 1600 time period.

Those dates fit
with the Knights of Malta.

We know that they were here
in the 1630s.

- Is that correct?
- Correct.

Wow. Those dates are

very surprising.

We can connect the work
in the swamp

potentially
to the Knights of Malta.

I think that's
comfortably in-in range.

surveyor Steve Guptill

and geoscientist Dr. Ian Spooner

have just presented
scientific data suggesting

that numerous structures
in the swamp were created

in the 17th century

and may support the theory

that the Knights of Malta buried
sacred treasures on Oak Island.

Maybe the Money Pit

was originally built
by the Knights Templar.

I'm wondering if maybe
in the 1600 to early 1700s,

the Knights of Malta
were finishing up

some of the work
that the Templars had started.

Or following up.

And it's not

out of the range
of possibilities.

to do one final thing and
that was to try and figure out

the big boulders that are
out there in the north end

- of the swamp.

of the team discovered

a possibly man-made formation
of large boulders.

I think you have a seawall.

This is how you'd close
this swamp off.

that the late treasure hunter
Fred Nolan reportedly uncovered

in the late 1960s

and believed was used
to create the swamp.

It's potentially 14 feet long.

And that's
what your father said.

Roughly four-fourteen feet long.

while using ground-penetrating
radar in this area,

the team was astonished
to find an anomaly

that matched Fred's description.

Mixed within
those smaller boulders,

we had the survey stakes,

or the support stakes.

We dated some of the stakes.

It dates very consistently--

late 1600, early 1700s.

We did a few scans

north of that seawall
that Steve was talking about.

So if you look up
on the screen...

...there's that blue anomaly
that's elongated.

I think it could be a really
interesting potential hit.

It would be nice
if it's Fred's wall.

I think if that is a wall,

it will represent original work.

- It's worth digging.
- Now, that

I can't agree with more.

...always time to dig.

If this wall
clearly had a purpose

and if that purpose
was manipulating the swamp

to protect something,

that would be
a incredible piece of data.

There are things yet to dig
in the north end of the swamp.

Maybe there are more of
these subterranean swamp vaults.

Nobody would like more than me

to dig up something
really significant.

And I always want to dig, so...

right in the middle
of what we think

may be the wall,
based on the OKM data.

constructed a 157-foot shaft
in the Money Pit

in a bold
but unsuccessful attempt

to retrieve the believed vault

that William and Frederick
had discovered in 1897.

If we have to push it
or chase it to, uh, 215,

we've got
all the caisson material here

we need to do that.

they're digging
through the Chappell Shaft

is an encouraging sign.

But now the burning question is,

once TOT-1 descends
below 200 feet,

will it encounter
the legendary vault?

a depth of over 140 feet

in the TOT-1 shaft,

the Oak Island team
may have just discovered

an important clue...

which was a kind of
pre-18th century cutting tool.

Could that mean that this dowel

was part
of the original Money Pit?

And if so, does it suggest

that the team could be on target

to locate the legendary
Chappell Vault

more than 50 feet deeper below?

It feels a lot harder.

Some of the wood

in the sense that it's pegged

with a dowel rather than using
metal fasteners.

And that's an older technique.

braced the bottom

of the so-called Chappell Shaft

with a four-foot-tall
metal shoe, or shield,

to prevent flooding
and cave-ins.

Now that the team
has reached the bottom

of the 1931 searcher shaft,

and because they will
advance TOT-1

more than 200 feet deep
into the solution channel,

any new materials
that they bring to the surface

could be related
to the original Money Pit.

You dream of that coming out
with a half-broken chest.

We have sought to find
irrefutable proof

of men working
in the Money Pit at depth,

and lo and behold,
this item comes out.

The interesting thing about

this artifact is the depth.

It was really deep.

Okay.

Well, it's a fairly, uh,
chunky, uh, piece.

-Mm-hmm.
- Broken off from
some other piece

that extended this way.

A-Also, if you look at it,
you'll see the grains,

and the grains are starting
to fold on the end here.

And when you beat
onto it repeatedly,

they do start to fold up
in a nice pattern-like.

So this was repeatedly banged
onto something.

That something, could you infer

that it was
stone versus metal, or not?

Oh, yes,
it was definitely stone.

- Definitely stone.
- Rocks. Hard ground, whatever.

So, this is actually
a cross section

of that iron piece.

So, there was, like, a crack.

So, it is a tool.

It could be part of a pickax.

A very heavy, old pickax.

There would have been
something coming out this way,

that were this shape
and this size...

was from the 1500s.

has just shared his assessment
that the pickax

recovered from
more than 160 feet deep

in the TOT-1 shaft

could predate the discovery
of the Money Pit

by nearly three centuries.

So, based on the composition,

we got potassium,

we got phosphorous,
sulfur, magnesium.

So, based on the impurities
I'm seeing here,

these are indicative of,
I'd say, between 1500s

and 1700s as well.

Wow. So, it's way before
the story

of the Money Pit.

1790s.

Absolutely.

This represents
something very early,

a tool such as this
having been used in rock.

The dates seem to line up
with the Knights of Malta

having a presence
in Nova Scotia.

It's all possibly confirming
that this location

for the TOT-1 caisson
is an area of original work.

This could be
a very important connection

that needs to be followed up on.

I think we may be

close to treasure.

Has the team found
a tool that was used

in an operation
to hide something of great value

in the original Money Pit?

If so, might it represent
another critical clue

that may connect
the Knights of Malta

and priceless
religious treasures

to the Oak Island mystery?

from that is the amount of work,

the amount of abuse

to how much labor it took
