We're
in the oldest prison in Malta.

This is a place very rich
in symbolism.

The four-dot cross
is thought to represent

the presence of holy relics.

There was indeed
a family bloodline

that we can connect
to Oak Island.

It's quite remarkable.

This is one of the boulders

- that's on the map.
- Come on, baby.

Let's find a treasure.

- What the heck is that?

Boy, that is really pretty.

- I wasn't expecting that.

where people
have been looking for

an incredible treasure
for more than 200 years.

So far, they have found
a stone slab

with strange symbols
carved into it,

man-made workings
that date to medieval times,

and a lead cross
whose origin may be connected

to the Knights Templar.

To date, six men have died

trying to solve the mystery.

And according to legend,

one more will have to die

before the treasure
can be found.

A cool fall morning
has begun on Oak Island.

But in the fabled
Money Pit area,

ground repairs
are running at full steam

in preparation for brothers
Rick and Marty Lagina

to conduct the deepest dig
ever attempted

in search of a vast treasure.

We're gonna run 'em

to disperse the load and set the
oscillator on the crane mats.

- On top of these?

the Laginas and their team
have excavated

multiple seven-foot-diameter
steel shafts

in locations where they
have not only detected

high trace evidence of
precious metals deep underground

but also the legendary
Chappell Vault,

a massive concrete-encased box

that was first reported
by treasure hunters back in 1897

at a depth of 153 feet.

Hey. Stop. It's caving.

just as they hoped
to retrieve the buried vault,

the earth surrounding and below
the shaft suddenly caved in.

This has caused the team
to speculate

that the tons of soil
and the believed treasure

fell into a massive
natural cavity in the bedrock

more than 200 feet deep

known as the solution channel.

Now more than 50 tons of gravel
are being used

to make the Money Pit area
safe for the team

so they can sink another
seven-foot-diameter shaft

all the way down
into the solution channel

and hopefully recover
the storied riches.

While the repairs continue

in the Money Pit area
on Oak Island...

...more than 4,000 miles
to the east in Gozo, Malta...

- with the bells ringing.

You know what?
Maybe it's a good omen.

and other members of the team

are investigating
an incredible theory

about the Oak Island mystery--

that members
of the medieval Christian order

known as the Knights Templar

and a related group
known as the Knights of Malta

made numerous visits between
the 12th and 17th centuries

in order to hide
priceless religious treasures

all across the island.

We're in, uh... within the walls
of the old citadel in Gozo.

So, after they built Valletta

in 1571,

the Knights of Malta
started improving

the fortification of Malta,

uh, the other cities
around Valletta,

and eventually around here
in Gozo.

Rick, Marty, and their team

have made a number
of shocking discoveries

that may be related
to the Templar order...

...such as a 14th century
lead cross

and numerous stone structures
that could date back

to as early as 1200 AD.

It's just absolutely incredible.

just after their arrival in
Valletta, Malta one week ago...

Is this clay?

It's grayish, bluish.

The legend

tells of flood tunnels
on the island.

...Rick and the team
saw underground tunnels

that were built by the Knights
of Malta in the 16th century

with a similar design
to the description

of the original Money Pit.

I did come across
a similar pattern here.

that a mysterious button
featuring a starburst pattern

and which was found
one year ago on Oak Island

may also be connected
to the Maltese order.

that the Knights of Malta

or an evolution
of the Knights of Malta

may have had something to do
with the Oak Island mystery.

There's a lot
of excitement about it

and an imperative
to follow those leads.

So the reason why we're here
today is to take a look

at the old prison
that is up there.

And the people here
bided their time by scratching

the-their beliefs and
their symbols into the walls.

We'll also find some symbols

that remind us very, very much
of the stuff we've seen

- on Oak Island.

by the Ottoman Empire in 1551,

the citadel of Victoria,
also known as Cittadella,

was reconstructed in 1599

with the help
of the Knights of Malta

to serve as a fortification
and prison.

Okay, why don't we go
to the old prison?

that it may have also been used
by the knights

to hide Templar-related
treasures

before they were transferred
to Oak Island

in the 17th century.

We're in the-the oldest prison
in Malta.

And, uh, this is a place
very rich in, uh, symbolism,

carvings, graffiti.

But I-I would like, before we
get in, to show you something.

It's actually, uh, behind you.

There's something there
that you might recognize.

- Oh, yeah.

- That four-dot cross.

The four-dot cross is thought

to represent the presence
of holy relics

at some point in time.

- And that's carved

on the H+O Stone
back on Oak Island.

of Oak Island in 1921,

the so-called H+O Stone

was a fragment
of a much larger boulder

that was blown apart
by searchers

who mistakenly believed

that it marked the location
of buried treasure.

The H+O symbol featured a cross

surrounded by four dots
carved into it.

And in recent years,

the team has not only found
this symbol

at numerous Templar-related
sites throughout Europe,

including Portugal,

Italy,

Denmark,

and the Netherlands,

but have also learned
that it may represent

the presence
of religious artifacts.

Maybe this,
before being a prison,

was a place to hide or,

you know, keep something
that was special to the order.

The four-dot cross,

it is on Oak Island.

There's no getting around that.

We have to follow up on this.

It's incredibly important.

And then maybe we can split
and take a look at the carvings.

with archaeologist Laird Niven,

archaeometallurgist Emma Culligan,

and other members of the team

- in the lab.

to hear Laird
and Emma's analysis

of an ornate button
found one week ago

in the mysterious round feature
on Lot 5,

a feature that Laird believes
may have been used as a campsite

by multiple groups
prior to the 18th century

and also where they have found

a potentially Templar-related
barter token

as well as the starburst button.

That is really pretty cool.

I can see why you're excited
about this.

I was most interested
in the eye.

The eye was a very robust,
almost rectangular eye.

-Mm-hmm.
- And, to me, that's earlier

than mid-1700s.

Huh.

That's what really struck me.

Until we did the CT scan.

Okay. Let's see it.

And it revealed...

-Boy, that is
really pretty.
-Whoa.

- I wasn't expecting that.

Very ornate.

The back

is mostly, um, leaded brass,

but the body itself

is zinc and copper,

which is a less technical
manufacturing process.

So it could indicate

an older technique.

So, compositionally,

somewhat sitting between, um,

mid-1600s to 1700s.

And I think we just need
to do more work

in order to narrow
that date range.

Well, you can't help but compare
it to the starburst button.

-Exactly.
- Yeah.

Can you pull that up
so we can look at the two...

Yeah.

Oh, wow.

They really are similar.

The way that the starburst
kind of turns with its lines,

it's very similar
to the other button.

found in the feature on Lot 5

and similar to the so-called

which may have originated
in Malta?

Is it possible that the team
has unearthed a second clue

that could link the Knights of
Malta to the Oak Island mystery?

Something happened here.

Six petals in a circle.

in-in conjunction

with the Knights Templar

and now we might be seeing
in conjunction

with the Knights of Malta.

And hopefully
we can prove out connections

to Oak Island.

This almost looks like a code.

There's some, uh,

- 90 Foot Stone symbolism there.

Unearthed in 1804
at a depth of 90 feet

in the original Money Pit,

the 90 Foot Stone was covered
with cryptic symbols.

Upon its removal,

the shaft flooded with seawater,

leaving searchers to believe

that a great treasure
was guarded

by an ingeniously designed
flood tunnel.

Would be nice to do

a comprehensive study
of all this.

...the Oak Island team has found
not only a familiar symbol

that depicts religious treasures

but also another one
related to a booby trap

that may be protecting such
things deep in the Money Pit?

Every time you find something
that you think

is relatable to our quest
to solve the Oak Island mystery,

you pay attention.

And we see some of
these same symbols represented

in the characters
on the 90 Foot Stone.

Eerily similar.

I don't know
about the rest of you,

but today has just solidified
for me my impression

that we've got
old-world European symbolism

- on Oak Island.
-Absolutely.

We see these same symbols
on the island.

We can't escape that.

There was information
that was deemed necessary

to place on these walls
literally in stone.

If you're going to feel it's
important enough to write it

in stone, you're
gonna write it on documents,

and those documents
would be housed somewhere.

- My takeaway is,

- there's a lot more work to do.

if it was placed or not.

This is the Blair treasure map.

From what we can gather,

there were three separate
treasure caches.

Doug Crowell, Judi Rudebusch,

and historian Terry Deveau

presented the team

with a 19th century map
of the western end of Oak Island

that was created
by the legendary treasure hunter

Frederick Blair,

one of the men
who first reported

the so-called Chappell Vault
in 1897.

There were three
original notations on the map.

Three stones
that were indicated.

the map depicted three boulders,

which Blair believed may have
been placed centuries earlier

in order to mark
the approximate locations

of shallow treasure deposits...

- Oh!
- Oh! That's what
we're talking about!

Yeah. No mistaking this one.

...boulders which the team
has already verified

were in the correct places

according to the map.

let's find a treasure.

treasure map

related to Frederick Blair,

they have just unearthed
what appears to be

a man-made ring
of large stones.

This seems
like an intentional jumble.

And what might the team find
buried underneath it?

As we pulled the boulder out,

there was evidence there was
a lot more rocks around there.

I'm not sure
what to think of it,

but they look like
they were put there by man,

and we need to pursue it.

beneath the man-made stone feature,

could that be because
it is merely a marker

for valuables that are buried
somewhere else in the area?

Regardless,
if the team can determine

the age and possible origin
of these artifacts,

they may still represent
valuable clues

toward identifying
just who created this feature.

We have several other places
on the map to go and explore.

And we're burning daylight.

and hopefully find more stuff.

when the Knights of Malta

first took control
of the island nation

back in the early 16th century.

will further connect
the Knights of Malta

to the Oak Island mystery.

...in Jerusalem in 1187,

in Acre, 1291,

in Ruad, in Rhodes,

in Paris...

At the Palazzo Falson
in Mdina, Malta,

author and researcher Corjan Mol

is presenting Rick Lagina
and members of the team

with compelling new research.

could link a family connected
to the Knights of Malta

to priceless treasures,

as well as
the Oak Island mystery.

In 1307,
we have Gérard de Villiers.

of the Catholic Church
for nearly two centuries,

on Friday, October 13th, 1307,

Pope Clement V
and King Philip IV of France

made the stunning decision

to dissolve and prosecute the
order of the Knights Templar,

on charges of heresy.

However,
some researchers believe

that the actual purpose was
to acquire the priceless relics

that the Templars were rumored

to have recovered
in the Holy Land,

including the golden menorah
from King Solomon's Temple,

the Holy Grail
and the Ark of the Covenant.

Treasures which the Templars

may have begun
transporting to Oak Island

as early as 1200 AD.

Although many Templars
were arrested,

imprisoned and executed,

some are known to have escaped,

and their remaining treasures
disappeared without a trace.

Very interesting.

In 1632,
French Naval captain

and Knight of Malta
Isaac de Razilly

commanded an expedition
to North America

in order to establish
France's colony of Acadia,

now known as Nova Scotia.

For his efforts,
he was appointed the title

of lieutenant general
for New France.

Curiously, the site
that de Razilly chose

for the colony's headquarters

was Fort Point
on the LaHave River,

located only 15 miles
south of Oak Island.

To me, I think
the most compelling part so far

is the connection
between these people

who were in charge
of the Knights Templar

and the de Villiers
who arrived in Nova Scotia.

I mean,
you've got people connected

to both sides of the Atlantic.

Yeah.

The Oak Island story, to me,

was always even more
than multigenerational,

it was multi-depositional.

And that's what
you have laid out today.

I'm excited
about the possibilities

of what Oak Island represents.

Corjan provided us with
some connective tissue

and a framework upon which
we can build, but right now,

it's time to get back
to Oak Island

and finish the work
for the year.

My hope is that we can
work towards the ultimate goal

of really saying with periods
at the end of the sentences,

not question marks,
"this is what happened."

embedded nicely in the ground,

very difficult to move,

an oxen was used long ago

to position this boulder
as a marker for something?

If so, what was it marking?

And might the team
find the answer

by digging beneath it?

That's a hell of a lot of rocks.

-Is that natural?
-I don't know.

These angular rocks
look like some of the rocks

that we found in
the paved area in the swamp.

Yep.

Let's see.

Oh, I'd love to find
a piece of metal this deep.

There's the C-horizon.

-That's it, isn't it?
-Yep.

or the natural layer of earth
below the topsoil,

it means that they
have reached a depth

where there is no more evidence
of human activity

beneath the believed
man-made feature.

I think this boulder
was just used for reference.

I don't think it was used
to hide anything,

- or anything like that.
- Yeah.

- But it seems like
it was placed here.
- Yeah.

It was placed, for sure.

There's got to be
something buried nearby.

Yes.

A few years ago,
I would have downplayed

that the western part
of the island had anything to do

with the treasure mystery,

but I can't do that anymore,
because there's been evidence,

good evidence, to the contrary.

So, we have to do
a lot of investigation.

If the boulders are
indeed markers, my ears perk up.

Then we know that something
spectacularly important

happened in this area.

No.

Unfortunately, no more metals,
just that one ox shoe.

So, we can get that to the lab
and compare it to the rest?

the whole brain trust here

because Rick and the team, uh,
that went to Malta

is back with information.

returned to Oak Island,

So, I'd like to know
what you guys found,

what you did and-and,
uh, then of course

we want to tell you
what we found.

In general, what we did
was a lot of digging.

Specifically, we went and
thoroughly researched the map.

The Blair treasure map.

Oh, okay.

We dug under the two boulders

because it seemed to be
markers for something,

but we didn't find any treasure.

And I did go out and
take a look at the boulders.

So, the anchor boulder
on Lot 21, it's been moved.

The other boulder,
it's probably been moved.

At least it's been--
There's been digging around it.

So, it looks like
it's been adjusted.

But my take on the map is that
it's-it's very important.

It's the one treasure map
that exists.

that there's treasure,
but it's just a map.

It's not treasure.
It is not proof of that.

The proof is in the ground.

And I think we are all
quite enthusiastic about it

for one simple reason,
this is a treasure hunt

and this is a treasure map.

We'll do whatever it takes
to come to a conclusion.

A very significant final one

from our time
while you were away,

is that button right there.

That was found
by Laird and his team

near the steps
into the Lot 5 feature.

Right next
to the other starburst button.

The scans that Emma made,

it really is
a very beautiful thing.

I looked at the scan
that Emma did

and it reminds me of something
that we saw in Malta.

Alex Lagina has just made
a surprising observation

regarding the floral button

that was found one week ago
on Lot 5.

So, we visited a prison
at the Cittadella on Gozo

and carved into the wall there
was this symbol.

That, right there.

So, this is graffiti
on the walls of the prison.

It was obviously
significant enough

to be carved in the wall
of a prison

that at one time

held members
of the Knights of Malta.

There are actually
similarities between

- that carving and the button.
-Yep.

of a 16th-century prison
in Gozo, Malta?

One similar in design
to the floral button

that was found near
the stone foundation on Lot 5?

Could this be further evidence

that the Knights of Malta
made a secret visit

to Oak Island
nearly 400 years ago?

And so, at this same prison,

there's all kinds
of carvings on the wall.

- That's a Maltese cross.
-Maltese cross, yeah.

There's the four-dot cross.
Which it's on the H+O Stone.

Yeah.

So, I kind of approached it

from the kind of "means, motive
and opportunity" perspective.

Opportunity is kind of settled,
because we know they were here.

Um, so, we wanted to investigate
the means and the motive.

And we saw a means and motive

when we went underground
in Valletta.

We saw the means, because they
have these massive cisterns

that they carved

60 feet under the city,

and a network of tunnels.

So, what was
interesting for me was,

in these tunnels,

they used blue clay
to seal off water flow

to protect its valuable items.

Yeah.

So, here,
this kind of reminded me

of the old description
of the Money Pit.

The hard rock, you can
see the pick marks in the sides.

I mean, you are literally
walking through history here.

- It's incredible.
- Yeah.

Okay. When we talk about
the Knights Templar,

we know they had this
sneak attack on them in 1307.

Yeah.

And there's a legend that people
left with a great treasure.

Are there legends like that?

Corjan was able to trace members
of the Knights Templar

leaving possibly with treasure.

- That's what I'm looking for.
-Right.

And it's connected to one
family, the de Villiers family.

The family itself maintains

positions of importance
within the Knights of Malta.

Right. A member of the family
left with the treasure

- just after
the suppression of 1307.
- Right.

So, perhaps this one family
was charged with the protection

of certain relics,
certain treasure.

Yeah. I mean,
the Knights of Malta

that was here in the mid-1600s,

landed in La Havre
a few miles from Oak Island,

supposedly related
to the de Villiers family.

They not only had money,
they had power

- and they had knowledge.
- Yeah.

clearly had the scientific
and the technical ability

to construct
massive things underground.

And we do know from Judi
and others' research

that the-the Knights of Malta
were definitely here.

Just 20 miles down the road.

So, there's a connection.

Well, look, all I can say is,
you know, a job well done.

We learned a lot in Malta.

But I think we need
to go back out there,

because you want to exhaust
all the potential discoveries

- that yet remain out there.
- Yes.
